Best all purpose Audio Video Interface for capturing older Tapes,LP's, VHS?

I'm looking at the Elgato Video Capture Interface to use with my iMac to transfer both audio and video from Record LP's, Casette Tapes, and VHS.  Wondering if anyone had any experience with getting this unit to capture just audio from an analog source?
Thanks in advance!!

You did say "Best".
Get the Grassvalley ADVC300.
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11. VERY easy and 100% "lossless"
Now for the bad news.
This product has been discontinued by the manufacturer. The included software (which is not really necessary but does enhance performance) is not compatible with OS 10.7 or newer.
You can still find the ADVC300 for sale in a few outlets as well as eBay. It will sell between 50% and 100% ABOVE its retail price. Yes, it's that good.
After lots of experimenting I get the best results using OS 10.6, iMovie 06, and iDVD 09/11.  My movies look just like Hollywood!
My primary computer is a Mac Pro, so I just use one of the four hard drives and boot OS 10.6. You can also partition a single hard drive to achieve the same results.
This may seem like more trouble than you want to go through.  However, I find the superior quality to be well worth it.

  • Can anyone recommend a Windows 7 compatible USB audio/video interface for Adobe Media Live Encoder??

    Any suggestions?  Also, are they hardware appliances that replace Adobe Media Live Encoder?

    I use this one with Windows 7:http://www.chronos.com.tw/Product/E/2/USB%20Movie%20Editor/USB%20Movie%20Editor.htm
    It worked bad with out of box Windows 7.
    But after all updates it works very well and stable.
    A nice thing is that it has little USB extender cable included. So it is less harmful for laptop usb port.

  • Best all-purpose condensor mic for recording with Logic

    Hey everyone,
    I'm just about ready to purchase Logic Pro and a MOTU Traveler and I am on the prowel for the best all-purpose condensor mic to record with ($500-650 is my budget).
    I would like to be able to record vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, primarily. Does anyone have suggestions? Thank you.

    it's going to be hard to find a good mic that is well suited to all 3 of those applications. Sure you can find stuff that will "work" on anything, and for that I would definately look at the Rode mics. But if you are willing to save up a bit more I would highly recommend the following:
    Rode NTK for vocals
    Peluso CMEC-6 small diaphragm condensers (about $580 for a matched pair) - these are amazing acoustic gtr, drum overheads, etc. mics. Also, I've used them for electric guitar cabinets and they sound great there too.
    SM57 for electric guitar
    These 4 mics will give you a lot of options. For instance:
    vocal/acoustic gutiar together (NTK and Pelusos)
    Electric guitar (SM 57 on speaker cone with either a Peluso a few inches away from the speaker or NTK a couple of feet away for body)
    Drums (NTK a couple of feet off of kit, Pelusos as overheads, 57 on snare, which would actually give you a really great drum sound in a good room with a good kit)
    Obviously this is almost twice your budget. You could start out with the NTK if the vocals are most important to you, or the pelusos if acoustic gtr is most important, and add on the other mics later. The 57 is super cheap and really needs to be in anyone's mic locker. I also recommend an old Shure 545 which is the predecessor to the 57. You can find them on ebay for under $50 (make sure that you get the low-z version with XLR connector, not the high-z with 1/4" connector) and they sound like a 57 but a bit warmer and smoother. They are really great electric guitar mics.

  • Dynex Component Audio/Video cable for iPhone doesn't just play music?

    I just purchased Dynex Component Audio/Video cable for iPhone and it plays video, but not music. It only works when I'm using Neflix or the video component of the iPod. How do I get it to just play my music?
    If I run the iPod music and open Netflix the music will play, but that is just a roundabout way of getting it to play audio and is silly. How do I get it to just play audio?

    don't think so but the component rely on normal analog signals using RCA connectors
    you can find tons of 3.5mm minijack connector and 2 rca connectors in the other cables
    they are dirt cheap and you can even make them yourself

  • Can Anyone suggest and audio/midi interface for MacBook Logic Express?

    Can anyone suggest an audio/midi interface for use with a MacBook and Logic Express? I'm seeing a lot of problems with Tascam devices; does anyone have an interface that actually works well? Two audio inputs and midi i/o would suit my current needs, but more would be fine if it works.
    Thanks!

    Any of the Pro-Tool Mboxs will work with Logic Express. Kind of an unadvertised feature. But I have an original M-box with very nice Focusrite Preamps that works like a charm. No midi though.. some of the newer M-boxes have them.
    Also, I have a Presonus Firebox and I know they make some smaller interfaces. No problems working with those.
    M-audio Makes some great interfaces too. Their Fast Track pro would probably have everything you need for under $200.

  • Audio/video input for quicksilver

    Hi, does anyone have recommendations on the best/inexpensive (under $500 if possible) way for me to import audio and video onto a machine that has no audio input jack? I want to be able to capture stuff via rca audio and rca video or rca audio and s-video cables for use with quicktime, imovie and idvd. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank You
    S

    Datavideo's DAC-200 converts analog A/V to digital and connects to the computer via FireWire. I've seen it for under $200, so you can compare prices for the best deal.

  • Audio/midi interface for macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?

    I have been running Sibelius and GarageBand with my keyboard and sometimes vocals in my  imac with OSX 10.6 via an old Tascam US-122 interface. I now have a new MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.4, and am set up to run Sibelius and Logic Pro 9, but I can't seem to find a compatible audio/midi interface. There is plenty of discussion on M-Audio's site, but as of May '12, still incompatible. Ideas? Thanks. John

    Yeah, the new MacBooks are USB3 i.e. you have to be careful which interface you use as some of them don't work yet.
    Personally I have a NI Tracktor control 2 for live work ( works with USB 3 but no midi ) and a Focusrite Saffire for recording. My Saffire however is Firewire.
    I do know that the Focusrite Saffire 6 is now working on USB 3 though. http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb  + it works with Mountain Lion.
    Sadly though it's still a backward compatible USB 2 inteface, but... if you're only recording Guitar and vox, this really won't matter to be honest.
    Also I'd recommend Focusrite over M-Audio gear any day of the week.

  • Is there a good USB audio/video grabber for a Macbook?

    I need to be able to take screenshots from my Xbox 360. My PC friends use a USB audio/video grabber that the hook up to their TVs, however, there aren't that many for Mac. I was hopping someone here knows of a good product that is compatible with Macs. I have an early 2009 unibody Macbook. Thanks for your help.

    I'm confused.
    Doesn't your mini already have a wireless card? It's part of the standard config, so I don't understand why you're not using that.
    I've yet to find a workable USB wireless ethernet device. I'm sure they exist but I've yet to encounter one.

  • Video card for capturing HD

    I had problems capturing HD footage using Canon GL camera and it had something to do with the HD device on my mac.
    *Do I need a different video card to capture HD?*

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    What is the exact model of your camcorder? a GL1 or GL2 ? Those models do not do HD.
    See FCE HD 3.5 user's manual (help menu) from page 207 to see how to capture HDV from HDV camcorders.
    FCE HD doesn't support capture cards, and the capturing process doesn't involve specific video card requirements.

  • 8mm and Canopus or Digital 8 for capturing 8mm tapes?

    I have a Canopus 300 that I've been using for capturing VHS tapes. I also have an 8mm camcorder. Will that camcorder + Canopus do as good a job as a Digital 8 camcorder or Digital 8 playback deck?
    Thanks!
    MikeR

    Probably only a side-by-side comparison using the same test footage would provide a definitive answer as to which path produced the better result.
    The data stream on a Digital8 tape is the same DV stream that is on a miniDV tape. The data is identical, it's just the physical tape that is different. You can only get 1 hour of DV onto a 2-hour Hi-8 tape, because the Digital8 camcorder runs the tape at approximately twice the speed.
    My Sony DCR-TRV460 is smart enough to recognize the signal and switch between modes. I even have a few tapes which have regular analog 8mm video on part of the tape and Digital8 on a later part of the same tape. When it reaches one of these changes, the camera automatically stops and switches mode, then starts rolling again.
    Not all DV is exactly identical, I have found out. There is a small discrepancy between the way Panasonic cameras record DV and the way Sony cameras record DV. I found this out when a colleague sent me a miniDV tape recorded on a Panasonic camera. I took it to a video shop to have it copied over to a Digital8 tape, which should have been a direct digital copy. But at the shop they told me Panasonic records DV in a slightly different way. The result is that there were some glitches and artifacts on the copy, and some audio problems as well. If you stick with all one manufacturer you should probably not run into that problem.
    The downside is that I have found Sony camcorders to suddenly fail to operate at the worst possible moments, and for no apparent reason. This has happened to me several times, in fact my TRV460 died a couple of weeks ago. It is always wise to have an expert repairman who is knowlegeable about Sony available at all times.
    I think that the Sony deck (GV-D200) might be exactly what you need for your project, but at $500 for a new one (or maybe $250-$300 for a used one on eBay) that would be a significant cost.

  • Best PCI-X / PCI video card for Solaris 10?

    I don't mean "best" in the "latest, greatest, fastest" sense, I mean best to denote visual properties and rendering, support, basically. My current machine (Compaq SR5250NX) has a PCI bus ATI Radeon 9250 (256MB RAM) that XSun detects and uses as an ATI 9200 Pro AGP. There are all sorts of performance/visual issues...when I minimize a window, it takes a second or two (literally) to minimize and you can watch it "draw down." Or sometimes when I minimize a window, it minimizes from the top down, and the desktop is redrawn vertically, very slowly. (So you can watch the window disappear top down.) This is *extremely frustrating and makes the entire desktop experience unpleasant.  This is unfortunate because I really like JDS.
    So, which card has the best Solaris 10 (XSun) support? It can be either PCI or PCI-X. All I do is write text documents, program, and other general tasks. No graphics work or anything of that sort. I don't care if it's old and I have to get it used...it just has to have awesome support and enough power to handle JDS and normal apps (Sun Studio, SO 8, FF3, etc). I'm on a bit of a budget, so if it's possible to get this card for around $100..that'd be great.
    *Yes, I've read the HCL, and I know which cards are on there as supported, but it doesn't say anything about which card has the best support.
    Thanks,

    Although I prefer ATI for personal use on other OSes, my last two Solaris workstations have had Nvidia Quadro video cards in them, and they've both worked very well. My previous workstation (A Sun w2100z that died a couple months ago) had a Quadro NVS 280, my new workstation has a Quadro Fx 1700, which performs extremely well even at 1920 x 1280. The Fx 1700 isn't what you would
    call cheap, though.
    You might want to try pick up a used Quadro NVS (at least something in the 2xx series), or one of the lower models in the Quadro Fx series.

    PS: I'm going to be asking nearly an indentical question to this one in a minute, except about audio cards rather than video. :-|

    Hi,
         Can anyone please suugest me a video player which i can download and install in my nokia 808 pureview phone to play almost all video/audio format files? I did tried to install UC Player from online different sites but unsigned versions showing certificate errors and signed versions showing certificate expired.
       I would be grateful if anyone can help me with the same and provide me with alink to download and install as well.

    this is not the solution, and i know that symbian is also aging now, but atleast it should have some essential applications available. and the Video Player is badly needed. I really loved the "Core Player" on my old S60v3 (N73). but its not available for new symbian.
    Although there are some great apps which dont let me down, like Joiku Spot, Xplore, Pico Brothers Youtube Downloader, LCG Juke Box, Panorama, Adobe Reader etc and the best NOKIA MAPS. But Still Few Apps are needed.

  • Best way to import videos only for nested folders?

    I have a bunch of nested folders like this
    TOP LEVEL
    -> Day 1
    ->->Videos
    ->->Photos
    -> Day 2
    ->->Videos
    ->->Photos
    Day 69...
    Now I can't just choose import on the top level, because I don't want to import any of the photos.
    I don't want to click on each individual videos folder because I'm afraid that I will miss one along the way.
    What is the most organized way to import this?
    Also, would you recommend having all the Days as one big event, or each separate event?
    Thanks!

    Russ's suggestion is probably the easiest to implement - and if you use external media you won't incur in much hard drive space penalty for it.
    If you really want to import just the video and not the audio, here is a small shell script that you may use to replicate the structure of your folders, using symlinks, and omitting the photos file. It assumes only one level down.
    You could copy and paste the text below to a file, replacing the two occurences of <path-of-top-folder> with the actual path of that folder, make the file executable and run it in Terminal.
    (a similar thing could probably be achieved with a little applescript or perhaps automator, as well)
    Note: I tested this in a small example, and it worked for me, but there is no guarantee, of course; but since the script below only creates some folders and symlinks, it is nondestructive, at least. At the end you should have at the same level as the original a "videos-only" folder replicating the structure of the videos using symlinks (no copied media).
    Here is the script:
