Best alternative for locating lost library & playlists?

I keep my iTunes audio files on an external hard drive.  I'm not sure if iTunes stores the information (playlists, etc.) on my external or internal hard drive.  I accidently disconnected my hard drive while iTunes was open.  I quickly quit iTunes, reconnected the hard drive, then opened iTunes again - only to find everything gone.  I'm assuming I need to relocate my Library after holding down the OPTION key - but the .xml files are not highlighted - and then I read something about locating the .itl files .... but when I open the .itl file - it gives me a library from a few months ago - not the end of the world - but none of the new music I added to the library since then shows up.
I have also tried dragging the .xml file directly into iTunes, but I'm still getting the library from two months ago.
What would be my best bet?  Is there somewhere on either hard drive so I can make a full recovery?  I also have a backup of my computer on Time Machine - but that hard drive is in another location.  Would restoring my system to two days ago via Time Machine be my best best to get everything back?  If so .... maybe I can wait!  In the meantime, any help you have would be GREAT.
Thank you!!!!!

Double-clicking on an .itl file opens iTunes, but not necessarily the file that was clicked on. To check the contents of an .itl database you need to connect to it after holding down Option(Mac) or Shift(Win) as you click the icon to start iTunes and are prompted to choose or create a new library.
If you know where the active library file is then this is the easiest way to restore a recent backup.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

  • Best Method for transfering iTunes library from Windows 7 to Mac OSX

I just bought a MacBook Air and am in the process of preparing my file transfer. The only data on my computer I really care about is my school/work files, (which are very easy to transfer), and my iTunes library. What is the best method for transfering music?
I was going to use an external drive and simply drag and drop everything. Last time I did this I needed a special file in order to keep my playlists, top rated, and playcount. Is there an easier and faster method now? I have about fifty gigabites of music so I think it might take longer over wifi.
I also have an iPhone and have already transfered all of the recent purchases. If I export my library, will all my iPhone backup data stay there as well?
If anybody has some insight or a link that outlines all of this that'd be great. Thanks in advance.

Here's a pretty comprehensive "how to"

Make sure the external drive is foratted so both the pc and the mac can read and write to it.

I have a new iMac.  I have authorized it with my iTunes account.  My current iTunes library is on a Windows Vista PC, not on the same network.  What is the best method for me to use to transfer the iTunes library from the PC to the iMac?

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Best practice for locations to deploy AP3602i's?

I am doing an install for a new building for my company. We have 2 office floors and 19x 2602's. They will be switched through a WLC-5508. I am looking to find a best practices guide on how to deploy them (location wise). For instance, should they be spaced certain distances from each other, at least X feet away from walls/obstacles, at least X high off the floor, in a triangular pattern, etc etc. Anyone know where to find documentation such as this?
Each one of our floors are rectangular in shape, around 20k square feet, have mechanical and elevator shafts in the center of the floors. So it is a large squarish oval. Nine AP's per floor, I thought about placing them along the center line of the oval, but in sort of a zig-zag pattern, not in a straight line along the perimeter. They would all be ceiling mounted. I am looking for any info to let me know if that is a good plan, or how I should change it to confirm to best practices.

Either you do voice or just data only, I recommend you do site survey before and after.  Make sure you leave some slacks of cables so that you can re-position APs after the post-deployment site survey.  Lowest SNR for a good solid connection is 20~25dB due to the fact that you need some fade margine, so perform site survey with that in mind.
Those lighting fixtures are not big of deal if they are recessed and mounted above access points.  Bigger concerns are firedoors, leaded walls, elevator columns, etc.
Remember that a site survey after the deployment is very important for a good wireless network.
    Good luck.

  • Best alternative for rowversion

We're currently evaluating SQL Server 2014's In-Memory OLTP for our application and saw in the documentation that rowversion is not a supported datatype: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn133179(v=sql.120).aspx
What's regarded as best practice if we basically want to have the same functionality as rowversion in In-Memory OLTP? Using triggers would be a massive performance decrease for us compared to rowversion.

rowversion isn't a hash,  it's a database-wide durably-monotonically-increasing 8-byte binary value.  So the best way to get similar behavior is to implement your own database-wide durably-monotonically-increasing 8-byte value.
You can do this with a SEQUENCE object. eg
create sequence ts_seq as bigint start with 10000000
This is the same way you generate key values for memory tables, with the difference that this sequence is used to generate timestamp values for multiple tables, instead of key values for a single table.  You can then cast the value to binary(8) or store
it as bigint, as the sort orders are compatible, ie
    for bigint a,b   a<b iff cast(a as bigint) < cast(b as bigint)
You can't access the sequence in a native proc, so you'll have to pass it in.  Eg here's how to fill up a memory table variable with sequence values (remember when NEXT VALUE FOR appears in a SELECT you get a new sequence value for each row of the output):
    DECLARE @od Sales.SalesOrderDetailType_inmem
    SET @DueDate = DATEADD(d, (@i % 10) + 2, @now)
    DELETE FROM @od
    INSERT @od
SELECT OrderQty, ProductID, SpecialOfferID, LocalID, (next value for ts_seq)
    FROM Demo.DemoSalesOrderDetailSeed
    WHERE OrderID = @i % @max_OrderID
Of course you must remember to get a new "timestamp" in any operation that inserts or updates the table.

  • Lost Library/Playlists

Today I went to load iTunes and it took forever to load, when it did load the screen was larger than i normally keep it, and my entire library was GONE!
My songs are still there, but the library itself is history.
I tried to load a saved version of it but iTunes gave me an error message saying its not a valid exported file.
This is the second time in the last year that I have had this happen, and to be honest I'm not too keen on sitting here rebuilding my playlists AGAIN that i spent hours and hours compiling.
Can anyone explain why this is happening, or where my library is going.
Can anyone help me figure out a way to retrieve everything off my iPod that currently has what I want???

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
If your iPod is set to update automatically you can use a keyboard command to prevent it syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows

  • Best practice for dividing IPhoto library

My wife and I have been using IPhoto since 2004, and are faced with the prospect of dividing the 40,000 photo library into smaller libraries. A Genius Bar session was only partially helpful. Last year we moved IPhoto off the IMac hard drive to an external harddrive. The Genius Bar employee created four new library folders on the external drive. We are thinking we need to get the IPhoto original library back on the IMac, so that it is accessible to ICloud. We are looking for a source of print guidance that can help us navigate these kinds of questions. We are also looking locally (in Tucson) for a coach who can help us get the logistics of library development started.

Why do you thing you need to divide the library into smaller ones?  The  latest version of iPhoto can handle libraries with up to 1 M photos.  There's no need to move the library back to the boot drive to have it accessable to iCloud.  iCloud works with the library that's active.
What do you mean by library development?  You have a working library on an EHD so that's all you need. This Apple document gives the system requirements for iCloud: iCloud: System requirements

  • Best solution for massive iTunes library for streaming

I have a large iTunes library, about 1.2 TB and I have it all on my laptop thanks to an OWC HD.  My wife and I love to rewatch a lot of our favorite t.v. shows which are on itunes, and as long as itunes is running we can easily stream to our apple tvs in the house.
The issue is I have to go get my laptop and turn it on and waste the battery, so I see the solution as getting an iMac that can hold all of this but the biggest size apple offers is 1TB, I could build one on gainsaver with 2 TB but I don't feel that is enough future proofing for space.
I believe there is a way to have my itunes library on an external, but can the iMac read the external and stream to Apple TV with quality?
I am stuck for how to future proof my massive itunes & iphoto library to be able to be streamed  <<< that's the key part.  I have no issue just storing it, but I need it to be accesible whenever I feel like having my Apple TV stream that library.
Any help would be appreciated!  Thank you forums!

    No problems at all.
    Get an external USB drive.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external drive.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
That is all you need to do.
You can do this with on the laptop and and later use the same iTunes library on another computer just by connecting the external, holding Option, selecintg Choose library... and selecting the iTunes folder on the external.

  • Best alternative for central storage of a NAS

    Hi All,
I own a macbook pro and an Imac.
Next to that I use a NAS from QNAP to store my data centrally. That should make it easy to use my data on every device that I have.
But in reality the NAS is very slow in relation to my apple products. With a windows machine it's fine. But showing up in Finder is a pain in the ash.
When looking to the competition, also Synology has lots of issues on that part. As can be read on all the user forums.
So, if I want to have an alternatieve solution with the following features:
    1) Store all my content centrally and use it on my apple products (so data is only on the central location)
    2) Backup the data from my central location to a location that's not in my house (for cases of theft or fire).
    3) Where the connection with the apple products is fast.
As far as I know there's not something within the apple product range, but that could be my misunderstanding of the product line.

When I saw 2TB, it triggered these questions:
    ISP
Sufficient upload/download transfer caps to achieve your goal
Sufficient bandwidth between you and your cloud services provider to achieve daily backups
Edge device upgrades for higher bandwidth performance to ISP
    Cloud Services Provider
Assurance your data remains on servers in your country
Sufficient storage expandibility and fits expense budget
Sufficient cloud performance to achieve 1.2, and subquent document access
    Adequate cloud management software interface
Reviews and other documented evidence of cloud service reliability
    Personal Document Security
One can place password protected documents in a folder
With Disk Utility, create new disk image from folder
    Compression
    256-bit AES encryption

  • IPhoto always asks for location of Library

Everytime I open iPhoto after a restart, it asks me to select the location of the library. I have done a complete rebuild and it still does it. How do I get iPhoto to remember where the library is located. It is in the correct place---in the Pictures folder of my User section. This also happened on my precious 24" iMac as well, both with OS 10.5 and 10.6.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

  • Libretto U100 - Best Alternative for missing Caps Lock Led

If you are using Windows XP, search the internet for the file keystate.zip. It creates an icon in the systray with a simulated led that goes red when the caps lock are on and black when the caps lock are off.
If you operate on Windows 98 SE there is an even better Toshiba program: toshled9.exe. It does basicly the same as keystate.zip but it has a much clearer and larger simulated led. In addition toshled9.exe has 4 more on-off icons that you might find usefull. Unfortunately toshled9.exe does not run within Windows XP.

    Great posting! Thanks!

  • Alternative for multiple inheritance (AbstractQueue and AbstractList)

    Hello all,
What is the best alternative for multiple inheritance? I want to make a list, which supports queue operations. Both AbstractQueue en AbstractList are useful, so I would like to use them both, instead of implementing the methods myself or copying the code.
    thanks

Do you mean you want a class just like LinkedList?
Why don't you look at the code for LinkedList. Perhaps you could even use it.
Most Queue methods have trivial implmentations using a List.
    From the source for LinkedList
    public class LinkedList<E>
        extends AbstractSequentialList<E>
        implements List<E>, Queue<E>, Cloneable, java.io.Serializable
