Best Aperture Training Book

Hi,
I need a training book for Aperture 2.0. At Amazon, I could only find Pro Training Series by Peachpit Press. The reviews have been somewhat mediocre. Do you have any other recommendations?
Thanks

I did not miss any points at all. The book stinks as a reference manual and a tutorial. It is better than nothing but that's about it. I have read all of your posts and others regarding the book and have noticed the emphasis of using it as a tutorial. After seeing so many wonderful comments on it and "strongly recommend" type things I just had to be the odd man out.
I can assure you that I am intimately familiar with the book as a book and as a tutorial. A more appropriate should be how to take 900 hours to walk through inane things that you could learn yourself in 90 minutes of trial and error or something like that. The sad fact is that there are no better materials for Aperture at this point. The really insane part about this and the Lightroom situation is that the tools are workflow tools and far too much emphasis is placed on adjustments, adjustments, adjustments.

  • Best FCP training book?

    HI there,
I'm using and learning FCP, but I know I'm missing lots.
It's FCP 7 (came with FCS 3, and it included just a tiny little manual).
I know there are various books out there designed to help people like me learn my way around this app, and show me some neat short-cuts, etc., but I'm wondering if the FCP cognoscenti can recommend one in particular.
    Thanks in advance, Malcolm

    Hi Malcolm
I would highly recommend the Diana Weynand books for Final Cut Pro, and as it's already been pointed out she does have the new one for FCP 7 out.
If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch I would also recommend the app titled iKeysToGo also developed by Weynand.com. It is a learning that puts the complete list of Final Cut Pro 7 commands in the palm of your hands! It's only $2.99 and is most used apps I have in my arsenal. Here is the link at Weynand.com:

  • What is the best FCE 4 Training Book

What is the best recommendation as far as training book?
The one recommended by "Tom Wolsky"?
    Or, the "Visual QuickStart Guide"
I have had good luck with the Visual QuickStart Guides in the past. But if the Tom Wolsky book is better, I'm all for it. On that note; Which book? "Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop"?
    Steve

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Tom's book is a big tutorial book with lessons. It's a very good start to learn using FCE by practice.
Lisa Brenneis's "Quickstart guide FCE for Mac OS X" is a kind of dictionnary presenting all application menus. It's less based on a day to day work.
Both volumes will teach you a lot of FCE.

  • Best settings for book order

What color settings are best when ordering Aperture 3 books?  I want to prevent photos that are printed too dark.  Last year, Apple advised calibrating to 2.2 gamma setting.  cr

    zasa:
Use the largest file, pixel wise, that you can. The books are printed at 300 dpi so the largest size the better to insure you'll get as close to that dpi for the largest page picture possible.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Aperture 3 book preview: Always WYSIWYG compared to the print?

I have found that the Aperture photo book previews of identical images differ significantly depending on the file type.  This came to my attention when I compared .jpg images to RAW images on the same page.  The reds and resulting skin tones were very different.  So I tried converting the same image to several different file types and the differences in the reds among them was quite a problem.  Meanwhile, in the Aperture viewer the different formats were almost indistinguishable. The worst shift between the preview and the viewer colors occurred for the Canon RAW format - major slide from red into orange.  I also tried .jpg (quality 10) and .psd (8 and 16 bit).  Their reds in the previews are also significantly different from the Aperture viewer in terms of saturation, brightness and contrast.  It doesn't matter whether onscreen proofing is on or off.  The 'red shift' also happens regardless of whether the monitor calibration is via Colormunki or the 'best fit' OS X eyeball calibration method.
So, what am I to believe?  The Aperture viewer or the book preview?  Or neither?  I'm not ordering all these expensive books until this is resolved.  FWIW, single prints from Apple based on the Canon RAW images are very far from the viewer appearance.  Their reds are muted and skin tones are sickly...
Any and all comments much appreciated!

Here is the 'not so happy' conclusion to this story.  After working with an Aperture support engineer I learned the following:
    1)  The print preview is the result of the particular color profile for the specific printer that will be used on each order, after it is applied to the submitted images.  So if one's monitor is calibrated then the preview image should be very representative of the printed image.
    2)  The hue shift that I see is particularly striking in pure reds that have an RGB green channel value of zero.  The printing color in the preview will consistently add green.  Blues in the same regions are variable, sometimes adding more blue and sometimes subtracting it, which worsens the hue shift.
    3)  This effect is independent of the computer submitting the image data - results were identical among 3 different macs.
    4)  Regarding the difference between image appearance in the Aperture viewer vs. the print preview - that DID vary among macs.  The best WYSIWYG performance (least difference) was on a new iMac calibrated by eye with the Apple utility, the worst was on my Mac Pro with video card upgrade and Dell Ultrasharp monitors, calibrated using colormunki.
    5)  You are welcome to take a look at the before-after difference as displayed in an online album.  It compares a .jpg made from the print preview to a .jpg made from a screen grab (using the Grab program).  Files had to be converted to .jpg format to upload.  On my rig they do show the issue.  Note my comments and you are also welcome to leave comments there.  The URL is:  http://opa.cig2.usa.canon.com/s/m/BhVjzDMZypG
    The password is: photoprint
    6)  In summary, the RAW image format is not as standardized as other more ubiquitous formats and each can be somewhat different.  So it remains to be seen whether Apple has time to fine-tune the application to all of the standards.  It may not make financial sense.  But until this is fixed, they will not receive any print business from me.

  • Export to Build Training Book Question

    Howdy,
I want to hand out a training book the shows the 2 slide-up view from the handouts export option in keynote. THe issue I have is that I also have to compile a few excel charts from co-workers, as well as create a TOC and then page number the entire book. Does anyone know how to export the handout per slide separately so that when compiling into one book, I can move around the separate slides if I need to change the final order? Thanks!

Ok, I see the key problems now, you've got
    a) landscape content in slide form that you want in portrait format in book form
    b) during this, you'll want to add additional content that may be portrait or landscape
I'm thinking the best idea would be to move the whole production to Pages. That way, you can lay out a repeatable look (one for single slide, one for dual slide) AND, since Pages understands Keynote, the text and other info you copy out of Keynote will still be editable in Pages. Also, remember that you can drag a high resolution image of a slide out of the Navigator pane and into Pages. It means you can't edit in Pages, but you can still make the changes in Keynote and you're just a click/drag from showing those changes in Pages.
Another idea would be to create a portrait theme and work within Keynote (fewer problems trying to copy any master slide objects to Pages) but it won't be a s Page-y Layout-y as Pages.
Here's another idea. When setting up your Pages file, be sure to use Media Placeholders and then put your images in those (instead of just bringing in the slide images). That way, if you decide to use a different slide or different build point, it's just a matter of dragging it over.

  • Raw files in aperture photo books

    Hi,
I'm creating my first aperture photo book. I uploaded raw files to aperture, made adjustments, and then placed the versions into the book. It is these versions (with all crops, adjustments, etc.) that will show up in my photo book, correct? (That's what it looks like when I preview the book, but I just want to make sure I didn't need to convert them to jpeg or anything before I spend over $100 on this book!)
    Thanks!

When you create a version in Aperture it automatically creates a jpeg, so you don't have to do anything else. It is all automatic.

  • Final Cut Pro x10.2 training book

Does anyone know if there is an updated training book available for this version of FCP X? I just completed a course at an approved training center, and they provided me with the training book, but I've downloaded the new FCP X 30-day trial, and there are ample differences in the new version, apparently. An updated training book would be very helpful.
    Thanks!
    Michael

Don't sweat the small stuff. It will take you more than 30 days to get good at FCPX so the differences between the last and current revs are not really that big for you.
I confidently recommend Tom's book. Even though it's a bit out of date, the fundamentals he covers have not changed much.

  • Layout grids Aperture Photo Books

I am attempting to make sure all of my photo boxes and text boxes are consistent throughout a book I am designing.
I can not seem to find any feature that will allow me to precisely create and place images, text on pages.
There is a very basic center tool and outside margin tool -are there more tools somewhere I am missing or do they not exist?
If they don't Apple please add them. How can you have a professional tool without this basic function.
Also can you link text boxes to flow text?
Any advice as to how others have dealt with this.
    Thank you

    Hello,
on my experience Aperture´s books could be absolutly customized, so that´s more freedom in layouts.
You can adjust / change text boxes, fonts, sizes, color, and so...
You can create your personal book´s theme, or just only one or more pages within choosed theme, then you can print your book via on-line service, or print as PDF, PDF-X, TIFF (every composed page) or JPEG (same as tiff) to your computer...
but if you choose a theme and/or size, style (hardcover or softcover) but you want to change it for a different order, for example for parents, with another size or hardwork style, you must start creating another book ;<.

  • Aperture photo book vs iPhoto quality

Hi, will photo books printed from Aperture give me better quality than photo books from iPhoto 6? This will help me decide if I should buy Aperture or not.
Is it true that Aperture prints books at 300 dpi and iPHoto at 150 dpi?
Any advantages to printing photo books in Aperture (what does Aperture photo books do that iPhoto doesn't)?
    Thanks,

Recently I uploaded and had printed a hardbound book that had been designed within Aperture. Prior to this, I have used iPhoto to produce 10 such books starting back in 2002. I have always chosen the picture book format because it provided the largest images.
This time I used Aperture because it allows large images with small captions and a good deal or freedom of length and placement.I particularly appreciated the good snap placement between the pictures and other captions. The ease of producing 2 page spreads was impressive. The book ran 84 pages and the quality of the resulting was very good–on a par with my other Apple photo books.
On only one occasion have I had a problem with quality control of these books. In that case an a good high resolution image was pixelated. In that case, I was able to call Apple and speak to someone, who after hearing my description, asked me to send my copy back and issued a reprint order.
My only bit of consternation with this order is that I found no such contact information enclosed with the book.
Finally, I haven't seen any specific suggestions within this formum for third-party print houses that can produce good quality books. Just assertions that alternatives do exist. I would be willing to strip down the .pdf file of the book I have just created to some of the trickier images and see how these one of these print houses fare.
Here to an Aperture New Year!

  • AE CS6 training books

    Hi folks,
I searched the forums for advice on training books for the CS6 products, but all the threads are a year old, so I'm hoping to revisit the topic of training books for the Production Premium CS6 software (mainly AE, Premiere, and Photoshop).
I see from Amazon that there are Adobe Classroom in a Book copies already for CS6, but frankly, they're exact reprints of the the CS5 books I already have, same example files, exercises, chapters, etc. Very few new topics exist.
I have to be honest that I'm 1/3 through After Effects CS5 CinaB, and I don't love it. All the files are standard def ( ! ), and they don't seem to be practical from a design standpoint at all. Many of them feel incredibly dated and not something I would use in a practical design.
Can anyone recommend a good tutorial book that approaches learning AE, etc from a designer's perspective? I should indicate that I am not a beginning with any of these tools, but I'm not advanced either. I'm looking for really solid, practical, industry-used techinques to take my production to the next level. Things like how 3D tools in Photoshop work, how the new 3D tools (ie Ray Traced 3D) works in AE, advanced compositing techniques, troubleshooting footage techniques, advanced effects work, etc.
    Any help/recommendations is greatly appreciated!

Mark Christiansen's "Studio Techniques" would be the relevant "industry bible". Otehrwise these days you can find tons of tutorials on the web for everything, but naturalyl the quality will be mixed. Some are good, some not so much. Until you get to a specific point in your workflows, though, most of them will not be particularly relevant either way. Perhaps video2brain's series featuring Todd Kopriva & Angie Taylor might be a good place to start, but I can't vouch for any of that - I haven't watched a tutorial in eons. I simply don't have the time.
