unfortunately discussing the breaking of the encryption that comes with commercial dvd's is prohibited in these forums. however a quick google search will get you to quite a few software providers....
on a personal note, i don't agree with the fact that we can't "legally" transfer dvd's because breaking the encryption is considered illegal, even though the "fair use act" has said that copying dvd's for personal use or for backup purposed is considered legal. it's just the software to do that isn't. i'm not one who would rip a dvd then make multiple copies to make a financial gain. i just want to be able to convert my "old" media into a format that meets my current needs.

Writepad only works within the app itself - it does not allow you to write in another program. While it does allow you to save a document as a text or pdf file, it won't (I believe) let you open a file created outside of Writepad and work on it (except maybe text files - would have to investigate and see).

Looking for best app for converting my Powerpoint presentations to iPhone

Any good app. that converts a Powerpoint in to a form that is pretty darn close (including the audio, that is sometimes attached to a Powerpoint)? I tried exporting from Powerpoint to a .mov file, but that didn't appear to do the trick, then I had to exported that .mov to .m4v format for the iphone (or iTunes to accept) . Only problem was, after all that , there was no Audio in the result.. Would appreciate a simple converter that did it right! I welcome any suggestions

I have Air Share. When I open a powerpoint presentation the first time it usually closes and goes back to the main screen. When I try to open in a second time, the iphone freezes and after a few minutes reboots itself completely. I contacted Air Share about this and they said they thought that it was a problem in the iphone OS, and to try e-mailing the powerpoint file to myself and opening it from the e-mail. If it fails the same way, it is most likely a problem with the OS and not Air Share. I did that and had the same failures. That is what prompted me to contact Apple support and post in this discussion.

Best software for converting VHS to digital format?

I watched my wedding video from 20 years ago the other day. Then I thought I should put this into a digital format so I've been looking around at Apple forum and other places for suggestions.
It seems the best/easiest so far is the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac software. The problem is any of the retail outlets in Canada only sell the PC version.
No problem - I will just figure out how to order online. OK...except the box includes the necessary adaptors etc... and a software installation CD. My new iMac does not have a CD ROM and after several calls back and forth between Roxio and Corel it appears like a downloadable version is not available.
I also see EyeTV seems to have a similar product, but that appears to only come from Europe. And I have seen grass valley mentioned in some of the forums but these appear to be dated and I'm not sure the noted item is available any more. Even if it (or its replacement) is, sourcing it here in Canada seems to be an issue also.
Any suggestions beyond simply putting the video on my TV and filming it with my iPhone?

You will need to buy an external DVD burner.
You will need an analogue to digital converter such as the ADVC110 (there are others) that can connect to your video player via standard RCA cables, and to your Mac via Firewire so you can import into iMovie.
If you want to to make a video DVD of the video you will also need iDVD.

Best app to remove duplicates from iTunes 2014

Hi All,
I've been trying to research the best application to sort and remove duplicates from my iTunes library. I have over 7000 songs and iTunes built in duplicate finder doesn't look at the track fingerprint, which is useful for those songs which are labelled "Track_1" etc.
Has anyone reviewed any recent products? I was looking at TuneUp, but after reading so many negative comments, I've decided not to go down that path. I would prefer a program that did most of the work for me, due to the amount of songs. Happy to pay for a good product...
I do have MusicBrainz Picard, which has done a great job of tagging, but don't remove duplicates.

Tune up is a great app. When they moved from version 2 to version 3 is when it went to crap and all heck broke loose. They shut their doors but they have since re opened and went back to developing version 2. I use that version and I am pretty happy with it as being an overall cleanup utility. I also use Musicbrainz and a couple of other utilities but in the end if you have an enormous library 20k plus then you are going to have a few slip through. I would probably go with Tuneup if I were you and a thorough third party duplicate finder. Dupe Guru's music edition seems to do a pretty good job.

Can't really speak for the software personally as I'm not all that interested in video on the move. All I can say is that there have been numerous posts on the iPod forum concerning difficulties with Videora. Whether that's a user problem or a software issue it's hard to say, it seems to have it's advocates and detractors as do most things. Good luck anyway and I'm glad the article was of some help.

Handbreak is definitely the best way. It is free and they have lots of presets to choose from. The downside is the conversion usually takes realtime unless you have a powerhouse desktop powermac.

Converting DVD in itunes

I used Cucusoft DVD to ipod converter and was able to get 5 TV episodes into itunes. One will load on my ipod but I get the following message when the next one tries to load. "Attempting to copy to the disk "my name" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to". FYI, all the episodes will play in itunes.

iMovie08-13 import AVCHD (in which mts is embedded)
and iM13 imports 'orphanized mts' (=if the intact AVCHD-structure got lost for any weird reasons...) alone.
