Best Audio Interface for Macbook Pro

Hey I'm looking into getting a new Macbook and wondering what the best option for portable audio interfaces is... I know RME has a PCI card that might be able to work... I'd like to avoid using the firewire bus because I'd like to use FW drives fairly intensively for audio playback. But from what I have seen, it seems like the Express 34 audio interface is a rarity, with FW being the most common interface type.
I'm not interested in comments from users who only know and use one interface...but prefer rather comments from people who have compared or researched multiple choices.
Thank!

your question is easy to get lots of responses, but difficult to come up with any truths... mainly because much of this question is very very qualitatively different for different people.
where to start with some of the questions...
do you need low latency - do multi-track recordings, or simply audio down in independent takes?
how many channels do you need to record at any 1 time?
here are some of the items that i have been looking at, personally...
Grace Design Lunatec V3 - with toslink optical digital option.
http://www.gracedesign.com/products/V3/lunatecV3.htm
can be battery powered. great preamps and A/D converter. no integrated monitoring option. only does 2 channels. the MBP has an optical digital input, so the optional optical output model could be hooked up directly to the MBP without any intermediate interface
Apogee Mini-Me USB option
http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/miniseries.php
can be battery powered. great preamps and A/D converter. integrated monitoring option. only does 2 channels and up to 48KHz sampling rate. built in compression / limiting can be useful to some, but not others.
Apogee also has the firewire option card coming up and the reason that I suggested the Mini-Me with USB option vs. FW, is that you could also get a Mini-DAC equipped with FW and then when you need to, can plug the digital output of the Mini-Me into the Mini-DAC and use the FW interface (with up to 96k up / 192k down) to the computer... so would basically have the choice of USB or FW with this combo.
obviously the above options are very limited and hardly qualify as "interfaces" in the traditional sense, unless you have very minimal I/O requirements, but my application requires only 2 channels and battery power for me is a must.
my idea of portable might also be different than yours. that expresscard solution looks good if you can afford it.

  • 5.1 Audio Interface for Macbook Pro

I am a theatrical and cinematic sound designer. I own a Macbook Pro (Mid 2012). I would like to start working with 5.1 surround audio, but I have no idea what kind of interface would allow me to use 5.1 audio. Can anyone give me a good recommendation?

Answer from Parker612 on 5.1 surround on macbook pro:
OUTPUT SURROUND SOUND FROM YOUR MAC: (simplest way)
(*Check first to see if your Mac is capable of outputting surround sound through the Mini Displayport. Most models before early 2009 are not able to output multi-channel audio)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US
    - Use a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable and connect the HDMI into the Blu-Ray/DVD HDMI input on the receiver and the Mini Display to the Mini Display Port on your Mac.
    - Go to System Preferences on your Mac. Click on the "Sound" icon. Then in the "Output" tab, select SONYAVAMP - HDMI
    - Then go into Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup. On the left side of the window select HDMI. On the right side it then should say "Source: SONY AVAMP"
    - Click the "Configure Speakers..." button in the bottom right of the window. Click the "Multichannel" tab. Then select "5.1 Surround" from the pull down menu. Click on each speaker to provide a test tone to make sure each is connect properly. Then click on "Apply"
    - Last set is to go into the DVD Player to test it. Go to "Preferences" and click on the "Disc Setup" tab. Under Audio at the bottom of the window select "Digital Out - SONY AVAMP" from the drop down menu for "Audio output" *You now have 5.1 Channel Surround Sound from you Mac!

  • What is the best antivirus software for MacBook Pro?

Can someone please tell mewhich is the best antivirus program for macbook pro?

    Hi..
Both Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac and ClamXav are recomended and both are free.
Actually, malware is more of a threat on a Mac than a virus.
Good read here > Thomas' Corner : Mac Virus Guide

What is the best anti~virus foe macbook pro?

None whatsoever. I'm sure that you've heard the line that "Macs don't get viruses"? That's almost true - Macs can be infected with malware, however, and can pass viruses onto PCs. See Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide. The only two virus packages that are usually recommended are both free - Sophos and ClamXav. If you feel that you need AV software, try one or both.
    Good luck,

  • Audio/midi interface for macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?

I have been running Sibelius and GarageBand with my keyboard and sometimes vocals in my  imac with OSX 10.6 via an old Tascam US-122 interface. I now have a new MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.4, and am set up to run Sibelius and Logic Pro 9, but I can't seem to find a compatible audio/midi interface. There is plenty of discussion on M-Audio's site, but as of May '12, still incompatible. Ideas? Thanks. John

Yeah, the new MacBooks are USB3 i.e. you have to be careful which interface you use as some of them don't work yet.
Personally I have a NI Tracktor control 2 for live work ( works with USB 3 but no midi ) and a Focusrite Saffire for recording. My Saffire however is Firewire.
I do know that the Focusrite Saffire 6 is now working on USB 3 though. http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb  + it works with Mountain Lion.
Sadly though it's still a backward compatible USB 2 inteface, but... if you're only recording Guitar and vox, this really won't matter to be honest.
Also I'd recommend Focusrite over M-Audio gear any day of the week.

  • Help!!! The best audio interface for Logic Studio

    Hey y'all,
I'm looking for an audio interface. Requirements are: microphone- (XLR), instrument- (1/4") and midi-connectors. I'd like to record everything 1 by 1 all by myself, without audio playback/slowing-down issues. I'm quite new with recording and have no idea which one suits my system and software the best. I want to record as easy as possible and with the most beautiful results available. Price range of up to €500.
    My MacBook Pro:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Geheugen 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    My software: Logic Studio
    Thanks!

If Midi connectivity is important: Focusrite Saffire 6 (USB). Check out the User Guide:
    http://www.focusrite.com/downloads/saffire_6_usb/
Otherwise, I would strongly recommend Mackie's Onyx Blackjack, especially when also out gigging. Check out the product page and you can also download an Owner's Manual:
    http://www.mackie.com/products/onyxblackjack/
I use the Mackie . User Guides/Manuals are a great way of checking out detail about a product when deciding what to buy.
I thought that Sennheiser were well known for headphones, not microphones.

  • What is the best external drive for Macbook Pro?

Migration Assistant is not moving files from my Macbook OS X 10.5.8 to My new Macbook Pro just purchased. Apple Support suggested I transfer thru an external drive. They suggested a 1 TB. They said it would be sufficient for migration and afterward for back up and storage of media and pics. What would be the best one for this purpose?
    Thank You

Go to OWC and purchase a drive and an enclosure. Put it together yourself. Takes about five minutes and a screwdriver. Or you can purchase one already complete from them if you prefer.

  • Best external monitor for macbook pro 15" to use for Aperture3

Hi, I have a macbook pro 15" running on Mountain Lion. I would like to buy an exernal monitor to work on Aperture 3. After reading on the net I am still quite confused as what is the best product to fit a good compromise for quality/price/compatibility
My budged is under 600€, so size should not exede 24".
Dell U2413 gets good and bad advise, not sure how it would work with Apple either. Most people talking about it are not on Apple products.
Any of you out there can offer some personal experience on the matter?
    Thank you for your time

Be very careful what you buy, and if at all possible test it with the computer before you buy it. A few times. These things just stop detecting external monitors for no reason sometimes, as well as just refusing to ever detect certain monitors.
Maybe someone here has a set-up that's working for them, that's your safest option.

  • Best wireless router for MacBook pro

I have a new MacBook pro. I've been online (wirelessly) for weeks but now I can't get online, or if I do, I get kicked off if I try to change pages. We have several iPads which I'm on now, several windows based laptops, and a windows pc. The wireless router is plugged into the pc. Everything but the pc has problems getting online and staying online but now the Mac is the only one that cant. I've reset the router, changed ports, restarted everything so many times I can do it in my sleep. We have D-link as the router. I'm thinking that's the problem but it's only 9ish months old and has been working until now. We have comcast. Help!

    Thanks everyone for responding!
I asked one of the workers at Best Buy about wireless routers and he suggested this one or D-Link. As well, he mentioned that it didn't really matter on what brand it was but I trust Linksys since it is with Cisco. I had a Cisco computer before I got into college with a mac.
I ended up buying a Linksys E2000. I live in residence so it made sense for me to get that one. It was an easy set up and really fast. The E2000 is 1 level higher than the E1000. In the beginning the guy suggested the E2000 but I asked if I were to get a higher one, he suggested E2000. It took about maybe 5-10 mins to completely set it up.

  • Best preference settings for MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 with 2.7 Ghz Core i7 processor 16GB memory Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 1024MB processor

    (using latest AE CC2014)
I have a MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 with 2.7 Ghz Core i7 processor 16GB memory Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 1024MB processor, doing some heavy AE renderings and just realized that this machine says it has 8 Cores? I'm had not yet turned on Multprocessing in Preferences Should I be?
Should I leave 1 or 2 cores for other applications?
RAM allocation per background CPU is defaulted set to 3GB
Also for Adobe Media Encoder: in preferences under Video Rendering /Rendere it is set at Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) is that the best config for this computer?

    How much ram?
The best settings depend on what you are working on. Here are mine for a nearly identical system:
It's usually best to keep memory blocks in 4GB blocks. If my workflow is more in other apps I'll switch out other apps to 8 gb if things start to slow down. Because of my usual project settings I keep MP turned off on this machine, but for some projects I'll turn it on. If you decide to experiment to MP then keep an eye on the Actual CPU's that will be used and make sure the numbers add up. Other applications and Actual Cores should add up the the total in your system.

My problem was that there was no internal speaker sound on my MBP with the BC3 driver...only headphones, and no way to switch.
