What is the best loseless avi codec for PP CS3?

Unless you need something complicated like 5.1 surround, just use WAV.

  • CS4 - need to export file type: avi codec: XviD

I just downloaded the 30-day trial for PremierePro CS4 as I was having difficulty maintaining saturation when converting with Premiere Elements 4.0.  I was told that I could export my files in PremierePro CS4 with the specs I need, but I don't know how.  Specs I need are:
    Dimensions:  1360 x 768
    File Type:  .AVI
    Codec:  XviD
    30 Frames per second
I'm completely new to this so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.  I had downloaded some sort of XviD file online, and it added it to my export option, but it wouldn't do anything when I selected it and I would eventually have to close down PremierePro.  I've since removed the XviD program from my computer in case the program itself was corrupted.

I find that the DivX (commercial version of Xvid) encoder works fine, when that is the desired delivery format/CODEC. Fortunately, I do not have to do much of this, but it works.
    Good luck,

  • HT1536 .AVI codecs that support retina display.

    Is there one that works?

All was fine until the organiztion's PC went south (10years old). I am covering with my personal equipment until a replacement can be approved and aquired. As fate would have it I just recently replaced my dying MacBook Air with a !3' Retina MacBookPro.
Thanks for the apmplifying info. This is a "horse of a different color." Had thought you were referring to the "Retina" iPad. Platform display type should not make a difference, Mac OS X version, QT player version, and compression format(s) used in the AVI container make all the difference in the world here.
Basic question is whether or not you have installed Perian and the QT 7 player app on the new system. Perian plus the QT 7 player basically support most AVI compression formats currently compatible with Mac OS X operating systems. Remember AVI is a legacy file format that has not been supported by Microdoft for more than 11 years. Some PC codecs have never been transcoded for OS X or Mac Intel platform use, some AVI files simply cannot be played by the QT players.
I have been unable to get .avi video to play on the MacBook using QuickTime Player and Flip4Mac. Neither currently supports .AVI for Retina is my understanding. I am looking for a temporary solution to just time play .AVI files once and done.
The real question is "what compression formats are you trying to play?" and "in which QT player on your new system?" If both QT 7 and Perian are installed and if the QT X player cannot play the AVI file natively, it will normally ask the user if he or she wants to play the file in the QT 7 player. To further complicate matters, since the introduction of Lion, Apple has, by default, turned off legacy codecs used by the embedded QT structure which were normally used natively for AVI export.
If playback is all you are interested in, then VLC can be used for this purpose since it includes its own codec resources within the app. The QT 7 player plus the Perian codec package provides similar playback capabilities. On the other hand, if you want to play and/or convert common AVI codec content to QT compatible files without purchasing a commercial conversion app, then you can use Perian (for decoding) and either QT 7 Pro ($29 USD) or the free MPEG Streamclip app (for encoding to any available export codec for which your system is configured).

  • Best capture codec?

What's the best capture codec for MPEG-2 HDV (HDV1 format, 8-bit, 19.7 Mbps), with the ultimate goal to send it to my client's drive as a DV/NTSC Quicktime file, 16:9, 853 x 480?

I guess I'm not being clear.
A San Diego production house hired me to do a shoot for their client. That client wanted it shot in HD, for whatever reason.
I sent the tapes to SD, they can't capture them into their FCP system, again for whatever reason (I've broached this topic on other forums).
I can capture the video fine on my FCP, so they're sending the tapes and a drive to me so I can capture the video to their drive and send it back, maintaining the full-res 720p30 video.
Yes, they did ask for "DV/NTSC."
Does this mean they don't know what they're talking about?
I suspect it's for the end client's website and he just thought "HD" sounded cool.

  • Exporting in the best AVI format possible. help

So I need to export my project in AVI format. Ive already done it once and it looks really bad, quality seems to be low even if I put it on best. Everything was turned up. Dont really know what im doing wrong. The footage was shot in HD 10-bit NTSC 720x486 4:3
Can anyone walk me threw what they do when they want to export at the best AVI quality??

The client wants AVI format. I told them QT is better and more used. They also want a mpeg format.
    Dimensions: 720x486
You can ask what clients want and you can explain why you can't do it for them but it's impolitic to tell them they don't know what they want. There is nothing better about QT nor is it used more. AVI persists in spite of the fact it has been dead for more than 15 years.
MPEG? 1, 2, 3, or 4? You must find out.
Your video dimensions indicate standard definition DV. The AVI export out of FCP or Compressor is lovely on my systems which suggests you may be viewing it improperly.

  • Other avi codecs?

I am recording video from an IEEE-1394 camera and have tried all the codecs available but none seem to work well. The problem with most of them is that the video is jerky, I think the time to compress the video is longer than the frame rate so it's missing some images. The only compression filter that works well is DV Video Encoder, however, the videos end up with 720 x 480 resolution no matter what the resolution on the camera is set to. I need to have higher resolution videos that are good quality. I tried Microsoft RLE with the highest quality set but the video is jerky and the files are huge (lower quality images are pixely). Can I download other codecs that would work with LabView? I'm using LabView 7.1.1. Would upgrading to LabView 8 help? Part of the problem is that my camera is 8-bit grayscale but the AVIs are RGB, so the files are really big. Can LabView 8 make grayscale AVIs?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I've stuggled with this problem for a few years. The best option I have found for high quality video with relatively small size is a unique version of DIVX using the ffdshow video encoder. Essentially ffdshow allows you to adjust the encoder properties of any codec (as they were meant to be adjusted). LabVIEW has never developed a vi to be able to adjust the codec parameters properly. Anyhow, if you download the Cole2K media encoder pack (here) and install it. It will allow you to select and adjust any codec you have on your computer and adjust it's parameters through the start/programs/cole2k media-codec pack/ffdshow VFW. I would suggest using the mpeg4, divx, one=pass constant quality (~85) setting from the generic menu. (yields >= dvd quality video with ~1.5Gb/hr compression)
You will be able to record very fast (I've tested up to 25 fps for 640 by 480, and 10 fps for 1200 by 1600) video with very good quality and compression. However, the recorded file may not load in IMAQ AVI Read.vi. This has to do with the fact it will try to use the ffdshow video decoder instead of the proper codec (i.e. DivX in the example setting). I hope this helps you and anyone else interested in video codecs and compression.
The ultimate solution to your problem lies in the fact that a *.vi was never designed to access and adjust the video codec encoder parameters. This is a solution I would suggest advising to any supporting NI applications engineers. It appears in almost every video editing software I have ever run across, so I would suspect it would be easy to access and adjust (perhaps even active X in the case of divx or some of the other more popular codecs.)
    Good luck, hope this helps,
    Josh Meisner

  • What is the best Audio Codec

    Hi All
After all the problems with windows users and video codecs, What is the best codec for Audio Files to put on my website, so that everyone can play them.
I have Quicktime Pro, iTunes, Garageband, and Final Cut Studio.
    Mike Hooley

iWeb uses the QuickTime plug-in for playback. It supports dozens of formats but still requires that QuickTime be installed.
So. Even if you used a very universal file format like .mp3 the iWeb generated page code will use QuickTime to play back the file.
When you insert non standard (.mov, .mp4. .m4a or .m4v would be standard) iWeb creates page code that uses the qtsrc="" tag that forces the file to be played using the QT plug-in. Non standard extensions would be .mp3, .mpg, .mpeg, .avi and some .swf files plus dozens of image formats.
If your page visitors don't have QuickTime installed they should be re-directed to the download page.

Those other posters are steering you in the right direction. Flip4Mac is the best thing for this, and all the paid functions will work in the free downloaded version, there's just some limitations on the length of any one clip, and a watermark on the video, but it will let you see how well it works...well worth the affordable $.

  • DV AVI codec issue

Hi all, I have a good one for you:
I have AVIs shot on a camcorder and captured to AVI through Premiere.  Gspot told me that they are DVSD DVC/DV format files.  Play fine in Windows, VLC and even in the preview.
But none will open in QTX.  I have researched and have delete, installed, uninstalled and re-installed DIVX, Flip4Mac, Perian, etc. Tried Low-Res mode. Tried 32 bit mode. Still the missing codec window.  But they still play on the preview (spacebar in Finder).  Go Figure.
Is it as simple as a specific codec I've yet to identify?  I love this mac but this is the kind of stuff for which I ran away from Windows.
If anyone has any tips or I need to be more specific, let me know!

Thanks Jon.  That expalins the QL discrepancy. I had experimented with simply changing the extension from .avi to .mov but it did not work. If there is more to it than a simple extension change I am game to try!
Changing the extension may or may not work. It depends on what the player application is checking—just the extension or the file internals. I usually recommend copying the data to a "real" MOV file container rather than just changing the extension. Even then, I don't know if this is enough to satisfy the QT X player in this case. It is, however, one of the first things I'd try.
Here is one example of how things may vary. If I take a VOB file from a non-encrypted DVD and try to play it in QT X v10.2, the file will refuse to open. Take the same file and it will open in QT 7 on my system and play the "muxed" MPEG-2 video but not the "muxed" AC3 audio. If I change the extension to MOV, the file still won't open in the QT X player, but I get a message saying I may need additional software to open the file but now the MOV file will not open at all in the QT 7 player. However, if I change the file expension to mpg, the VOB file now opens and plays normally in the QT X player and plays the same in the QT 7 player as it does with the VOB file extension. To make things more confusing, I can take the VOB file and demux it to M2V and AC3 elementary file streams and both audio and video will play in both the QT X and QT 7 players as independent files on my system. But if I merge the M2V video and AC3 audio to a single MOV file container and try to play it in the QT X player I am back to getting the "may need additional software" message while the QT 7 player now plays both the video and the audio. On the other hand, if I demux the VOB file to M2V and AIFF elementary file streams, then the files are automatically played as a linked resource reference in the QT 7 player, but play as independent files in the QT X player.
I hope this was confusing enough for you. Basically, all I am trying to do here is demonstrate how the playback of content can vary depending on the file extensions, file container, or player app even when the data is still in the same compression format albeit muxed or unmuxed. This is why I hesitate to say what will or will not happen with your DV AVI file until I can actually evaluate it on my own system.
I want to post a sample of my old videos so if anyone is interested they can have a look....but I could not figure out how to - the "insert video" link was greyed out.  As a substitute, here is the screenshot of the file in gspot:
Unfortunately, Apple has never really activated the ability post videos directly to the forum using the forum software. The normal work flow is to either send the sample file as an email attachment, send it peer-to-peer via IM, or post it to a server or NAS drive that can be opened to internet access usually by username and password. In any case, the file data you imaged looks like a standard DV-25 file containing DV/DV audio/video which is normally exported in the DV file container on a Mac as opposed to DVCPRO-25 normally exported as DV/AIFF to an MOV file container. Based on this assumption, I would normally try opening the AVI source file using QT 7 (keyed for "Pro" use on my system) for playback and/or conversion. Would also normally assume the AVI file could easily be converted to H.264/AAC or H.264/AAC/AC3 content in MP4 or M4V file containers by the free HandBrake app if all you want is QT, mobile device (iPad, iPhone, Ipod Classic), and/or TV playback compatibility.
All of the video footage in question is still on DV tape.  If I were to re-encode, this time to a new format, what would you suggest for future compatiblity with QT and editing software like iMovie?
Assuming the camcorder is iMovie compatible, I would use iMovie to import the files directly into the iMovie app and let it manage the Event folders. That way the raw data is immediately available for editing and should avoid any secondary or intermediate data conversions.
