Best backup method? / copying iphoto library to alternate Mac iphoto

Since Iphoto '09 no longer keeps the .IMG photo files in the Pictures directory, do you export all photos to folders to get the .IMG files back online? Then you back them up?
I was going to back the .IMG files up to a cd.
I have some DVDs, so I don't know if that is more sufficient with more disk space capacity. I could write them to a DVD.
Since Iphoto is not saving/storing .IMG files automatically anymore, then I suppose I should also back the Iphoto library file to cd or DVD.
Additionally, we are a Mac family with 3 other Macs. I was thinking that I could back the photos up by putting the Iphoto library onto one of them. When I shared my Iphoto library on our home network I did it in read only format. I went onto the other Mac and moved its Iphoto library out of the way. Then I tried to copy the main shared Iphoto library over to this Mac's hard drive. It would not let me.
I told the second Mac's Iphoto to use the library on the original Mac. It said that it was a different version of Iphoto and would have to update the library. Again I had my Iphoto library shared in Read-only mode. I allowed the update to occur. The photos sync'd to the second Mac Iphoto.
Then I couldn't use my iphoto library on the original machine. It actually changed the shared file system. I ordered and installed ILife/Iphoto '09 on both machines. I can now access all of my photos within Iphoto on the original system. But since I cannot copy the shared Iphoto library over to the hard drive of the second Mac, I am unsure how to proceed in using the second Mac as a backup for the Iphoto library.
I suppose I would want all undeleted photos backed up with whatever the latest version of the pictures is. It just takes a while to back up to cd, and I have to break it up to fit on multiple cd's since I have a 5GB library. That's why I thought I could back them up to the other system.
Also my computer, since I upgraded to Iphoto '09 is very slow if Iphoto is open. So I suspect I must be reaching some limit on the size of the library. I am concerned I may loose all my photos so I want to back up before that happens.
Thanks

I'm sorry but this makes no sense. What do you mean by a .IMG file? That's a suffix you can find on a disk image and iPhoto has simply never imported or managed such files.
By ".IMG file", do you mean your Photos?

Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.

  • I want to copy my library to my mac book from my mac how do I do that

I want to copy my library to my mac book how do I do this I tried using my back up but it did not trasfer the library as events?

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Manually Copied iTunes Library to new Mac -- Will iPhone sync be messed up?

Hi. Apologies in advance if this has been addressed elsewhere in the forums. I have found no clear answers though in my relatively thorough search.
I just bought a new Mac to replace my old one. I decided to start as cleanly as I can by only migrating documents.
After reading a thousand different ways to copy my library from my old Mac to the new one (and maintaining playlists, ratings, etc.) I ended up copying the full contents of my music folder from old to new via Firewire and then I option-clicked to tell iTunes to use the Library I just copied over.
A few questions for all of you:
    1. Is this a decent method for recreating my prior iTunes experience on my new computer? Any pitfalls of which I should be aware? I'm going from 8.2 to 8.2 by the way.
    2. What will happen when I try to sync my iPhone with the new computer? I want to make sure I'm not about to wipe it clean or otherwise mess it up. Again, I copied the full contents of the Music folder in my user account, so assuming my iPhone settings, backups, etc are in there, they hopefully will still work?
iTunes looks like it did before, but I'm nervous I might be deluding myself.
Thanks for the help and suggestions!

You got most of it, but you missed your backups which are in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. If you don't copy them, iTunes will make a new backup.
Also the software update files are elsewhere, but iTunes will download them again if needed for a restore. If you really want to move them, they are in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support and iPhone Software Updates (but you don't need them unless your internet connection is dial-up and you don't want to wait for iTunes to redownload them).
BTW, the ~ symbol indicates your home account.

  • BEST BACKUP METHOD

    Hey All,
    I need your help.
I was just on the phone with apple support. Long story short... after 4 hours on the phone I was told to back up my hard drive, wipe it totally, and do a full reinstall of Tiger.
    Here are my questions...
    1. How do I back up my mail documents for retreval later?
    2. How do I back up my programs for easy re-use. I have big programs like Photoshop CS3, Final Cut, etc. Can I just clone them? Do I have to do a full reinstall?
    3. What is the best way to back up all my docs and folders?
I have a 500 GB external HD and just want to make sure that I do this right. Thanks.

    Hello adam:
If your external drive is a firewire one, I recommend a little program called SuperDuper ($28 US at www.shirt-pocket.com). I use SD to make bootable clones of my iMacs. After the first backup, SD has an option to just copy changed data (runs much faster).
The clone eliminates the worry of "what should I copy?" You get it all on the external drive.
After the internal drive is wiped, you can restore back from the external drive.

  • What is the best way to migrate photo library to new Mac ?

Hi .... I just bought off ebay an Mac Mini 2.53Mhz running Mountain Lion . This was a great and cost effective purchase to upgrade my very tired Mac Mini 1.6 duo running Snow Leopard (still going as a second computer) .
However , I am not sure best way to transfer over my photos ?
I have a Time Capsule and I can use migration assistant
    - but when doing this and choosing just photos nothing else , the process creates a new user and is a real mess on the desktop.  Thus I am left with two users on the computer : and I can't access the photos from the 2.53 Mac mini user that I created for the computer , I have to log in to this restored profile.  Annoying !
    - I believe migration assistant linking the two macs through an ethernet cabe will give the same results
I have now purchased a firewire cable 400 to 800 , so the two macs are now linked . Would this be a cleaner way to transfer photos ? How should I set about it. I don't want to drag over any mess from the old computer ... I just want to get the photos onto the new computer and then link that to time capsule.
    Thanks

    Hey there cosmiconion,
It sounds like you are needing to copy over a folder containing images from your Snow Leopard computer to your newer Mountain Lion machine. You can do this by enabling File Sharing for that folder or directory, then accessing that from Finder on your newer computer, and this article will help you do that:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Copy IPhoto 08 library to different laptop for 09?

I have an IBook with Iphoto 08. What is the best way to copy that library to a new MacBook Pro with Iphoto 09 and migrate while leaving the existing Iphoto 08 library in tact on the IBook? I would be moving data across wireless network.
    Thanks for any advice.

Just quit iPhoto on both systems and drag the iPhoto library from the pictures folder on the old computer to the pictures folder of the MBP [if there is one there move it (if you have photos to save) or trash it is there are no photos in it]
Launch iPhoto on the MBP and it will convert the library to the new format (you can not use it with '08 after this) and it will be exactly the same as it was before in '08

It would be better if you could connect the two Macs via a hard wired LAN to copy the library from the Mac Pro to the MacBook.  Wireless connections can have momentary dropouts which could affect the reliable copying of files.
If you do go with Air Drop be sure to open and inspect the copied library closely to confirm it was a successulf copy.

  • Help !! Can't move or copy my library.

    Hi all
recently I bought a Macbook Pro, and I wanted to move my iPhoto library from my old G4 to the new book, so I made my MBP a target disk, and try to copy my library to my MBP, but it always end up telling me that I have "a file with the same name on the targe disk except case differentce".
Does anyone know how do I copy the library from on Mac to another ?
I really don't want to import my 10,000 photos from the "original" folder, and redo everything.
Can someone please help me .
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Try
    1. Create a new folder on the MBP and copy to it.
    2. If you get the same message, try repairing Permissions on both machines
    additionally Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

  • Can I have my iTunes Library on another Mac in addition to my main one?

My wife and I both have MacBook Pro's and separate i-Tunes libraries and i-Pods. We just bought a 13in White MacBook to use for travel only. Can we copy our library onto that Mac and still leave it on our existing Macs? We also have both of our i-Tunes libraries and Macs backed up on a Time Capsule.

Can we copy our library onto that Mac and still leave it on our existing Macs?
Yes. Drag the iTunes folder inside the item in the Finder's sidebar named Music on the MacBook Pro to the corresponding location on the MacBook. The folder can be put somewhere else if needed; if so, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it to that location.

  • I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?

I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?
    Facts:
In moving to a new iMac, I copied the iPhoto library to an external HDD assuming that I would point the new iMac to the backed up iPhoto Library
All worked fine when I pointed the new library but noticed that some folders contained aliases and not the original file. So when I attempt to open that photo it can't find it because the alias is pointing to another drive.
I do have all original photos from a couple of external HDDs. In the folders titled, "Originals" (from older versions of iPhoto) and "Masters" (from current iPhoto)
I'm thinking I can create a new folder and drop the original files and make that my new iPhoto library. Is there a better way to rebuild my library? I do not want to create any future aliases.
Thanks in advance for any help!

do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting
You must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure of content of the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it  --  and you can not rebuild yoru librtary - only iPhoto ir iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a library unless you are a SQL programmer and understand the structure that iPhoto uses

  • How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library?  I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's?  I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.

Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss?  In the iPhoto Library?  Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"?  Quality?  Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type?  Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply...

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Best Backup Practices - One Library vs Individual Project Libraries?

Hello, I'm new to Final Cut Pro X. I have several completed projects that I've been backing up to an external hard drive. However, at first I thought it would be best to create one library on the backup drive and back up my events to this one library. But I've second guessed myself and have been instead creating a new library for each event and then backing up the event to it's own library. This seems less prone to loading issues on large projects and less likely for multiple events to become corrupted if the library gets hosed.
How do you guys manage backups and what do you guys think are the best practices, one backup library or a separate library for each event.

There has been a lot said about the"best practice" for backups.
In reality there is no right or wrong, but having all your backup eggs/Libraries in one basket can be risky.
I use your later suggested method as it suits my style of work.
I prefer to have each Project, Event/s in there own Library. Self contained unit.
When the Project is done the complete Library is copied to another drive, plus if it's important another drive is used for a second backup.
What you have to work through is what gear you have or need to aquire to make your backup method secure and easy to do.
Nowadays you need lots of drive space and thankfully Terabytes are cheaper than ever.
