Best Backup/Sync Solution?

i only want a sync/ back up from left to right (only files that got changed or new files that got added) to an external drive...
i'm tired of manual copy and would like to find a nice app that does it automaticly. i tried a few but i wasn't so statisfied with cronosync and i dont know what else there is that is better.
any suggestion?

Hello!
Being a student, I have had to backup stuff for a while, and so have stumbled across several solutions. I found that the most reliable way was to create an Automator workflow to find and archive the files i want, but this is not for everyone.
Before that, i used a nifty application called iBackup (http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/). you select the origin folder, and the destination, and it copies and replaces existing files from the source to the destination. it also has the option of only replacing files with older changes.
Another nice .app is silverkeeper (http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/index.htm). whilst not as feature full or nice looking as ibackup, its interface is simpler to view, and arguably easier to setup. however, i wasn't impressed with its scheduling options, persuading me to change to iBackup. also, it has an installer worth of Windows, me preferring the standard application packages.
Finally, econ's Chronosync is worth a mention (http://www.econtechnologies.com/site/Pages/ChronoSync/chronooverviewold.html). the best backup application i've used so far, and recommended to me by the guys at switchers, Chronosync has extensive scheduling options, an easy to understand interface, a host of options, and a $30 price tag! :P I tried it and enjoyed it, but at the end of the day they all do the same thing, and i think it just wasn't worth $30. if you want my backup script to edit, give me a PM and i'll email you the workflow.
Good Luck,
Phil

  • Best Backup / Archive Solution?

    I'm new to the forum discussions and was hoping someone could offer some advice as to the best and easiest back-up solution in my situation.
    I work for a company that does not have a back-up solution for the 1 G5 mac connected to their windows SBS network. Yes, this is insane because this mac contains thousands and thousands of graphic files that go back 10+ years or so and probably occupies 80GB+ of space too.
    The company has a graphic artist that uses this G5 daily creating more graphic files. I am looking for the best Automated back-up solution that doesn't require the user to manually start a back-up and have to wait for it to complete - especially since there is 80GB worth of files. I'm not really concerned with backing up applications or program files, but more concerned with archiving the graphic files. I've looked online at solutions such as rsync, disk image files, raid with 2nd hard drive, and back-up apps with external drives such as Carbon Copy or Super Duper but wanted to get some advice from experienced mac users that may have dealt with my same issue.
    Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Basic Backup
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
    Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
    Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
    Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
    All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Is DLT the best backup solution?

    Hi,
    I am curious to know what people use as a good backup for their FCP projects and footage. I know DLT is recommended for outputting DVD projects - but are there better options? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    DLT is the dinosaur of the industry. Rock solid, totally dependable. The reasons it's still used for DVD replication are not associated with any reasons why you'd want to use DLT for backing up your FCP projects. DVD replication is an entirely different industry.
    DLT would not be efficient for video offloading in the slightest. Linear and long. But, as said, utterly bombproof and relatively inexpensive. if you have a couple of DLT machines and lots of cart,, you can certainly use them for offloading your FCP media. But "best"? Not at all. There is no single best backup solution, only what works for your budget and workflow. Hot swap RAIDs, cheap FW drives, optical, DVD-ROM, even installing and removing ATA drives in your Mac; they're all viable.

  • Best Practices: What is a best backup plan on BO 4.0

    Hi Experts!
    I work with BO since 2007. I worked a lot with BO XI 3.1 and now with BI 4.0. I always have a question about the way to make a backup: What is a best backup plan on BO 4.0.
    I know de many way to do this, but how I'm a consultant developer and backup usually is not my responsibility, but always I have to advise my clients and users.
    The little summary of ways I know on BI 4.0:
    - Stop the services and do a backup of repository database and FileStore folder (eventually include the TomCat folder and others BO installation folders)
    - Create a job on LCM and a schedule to export a LCMBIAR file
    - Use the Upgrade Management Tool to generate a BIAR file by the command line
    I found that interesting post of Raphael Branger, but his the best option is to use the 360View, but that software I don't know, and the clients usually want to use the SAP solutions, so the preference is use the BO's way to make backup.
    Backup & Recovery in BO 4.0
    Note: I agree with Raphael about the old Import Wizard, I don't know why Upgrade Management Tool don't allow to import a biar file that same version of target. It is terrible.
    Let me make a the big question: What is a best backup plan on BO 4.0?
    I know that this depends of the environment and the many variables, but let us consider the general environment, the standard installation.
    Thanks everybody!

    Thanks Mrinal and Ajay,
    On my experience I always use the full-backup: repository database backup + filestore folder backup (usually I recommend include BO folder installation and TomCat folder too because the custom configurations). That backup is essential, is basic.
    But this backup is not flexible.The usual problems on BO's production enviroment is accidental deletion of some reports or objects of BO. Since BO XI R2 I used the "Import Wizard" to generate BIAR files by the command line, I usually create a BAT file with command line to create thats files, however BO 4 Import Wizard was died, now exists "Upgrade Management Tool", but I can create BIAR files by the command line too. Let's suppose a case that the BO user has deleted a report and that user did notified that deletion after 1 month. We don't need to restore all objects of the full-backup of 1 month ago, with BIAR files, we can restore only that report. Thats is the advantage of using BIAR files.
    So, my strategy is use the full-backup (repository database + BO installation folder) and create BIAR files.
    What do you think about the backup by generating BIAR files?

  • Best backup program for iPhone 3GS??

    I am looking for the BEST backup program for the above - not only a program which makes backups of the programs, but ALO the contents of the programs - of everything! Any recommendations, thanks!

    I agree with the first reply UNLESS your iPhone is not being backed up by iTunes because it gets stuck. I actually just posted a question in re to this problem. For all you Apple owners I know, I should've bought an Apple. Well, I've owned three iMacs in the last 3 years and they are fabulous computers- u just didn't have 1300 laying around this time so I got a pretty powerful PC for 600.
    Anyway, my point being iTunes works great as a backup app for the iPhone. I just think my issue is I'm using Windows 7 64-bit with iTunes 64-bit and there might be some glitch because as soon as I click the 'x' besides "Backing up iPhone..,." it syncs fine, I just don't have a backup. Unfortunately I didn't get the Apple protection plan for the iPhone, but I doubt it's the phone anyway. Thanks.

  • Backup  (sync) - update purchased items- transfer?

    As are many, I am frustrated with backing-up/syncing my iPad to my iMac and want to start over.
    My preference is for my iPad to be synced, as I have it setup, to my iMac.
    And to, occasionally, transfer some items on my iMac (like a movie) to my iPad.
    This does not seem to be possible.
    Ill-informed (or misunderstood) dialogue box choices can easily result in unintended consequences.
    My solution (brilliant or not) ~ a New User account on my MBP 2011 just for my iPad syncs/backups.
    (FYI: an Apple Store employee told me sync/backup was the same. I'm not convinced that is true).
    That's done.
    A Dialogue Update Box pops up:
    "There are purchased items on the iPad that have not been transfered to your iTunes library.
    "You should transfer these items to your iPad Library before updating this iPad.
    "Are you sure you want to continue?" (No, I am not sure about anything now).
    Is 'transfer' another word for sync/backup?
    If so, well why not say so..... rhetorical...
    What is recommended?
    Update first?
    Sync first? then update?
    Also, if I manually check "Sync Apps" there is another Dialogue Box:
    "Are you sure you want to sync apps? (well duh...)
    "All existing apps and their data on the iPad will be replaced with apps from this users iTunes Library."
    (Ouch?!!) There is nothing in this New User iTunes Library.
    Now What?
    Does this mean the Apps I do have on my iPad will disappear during sync and be replaced by nothing?
    I get a similar Dialog Box on my iMac if I try to add a movie to my iPad.
    "Are you sure you want to sync movies?" (Yes, but not so sure when asked that way)
    "All existing songs, movies, and TV shows on the iPad will be removed and replaced with movies from your iTunes library."
    All my songs and TV shows replaced with movies? Meaning, no more songs or TV shows- just movies?? That's the trade-off!
    As you may guess, no movies are on my iPad to this day.
    Can anything be as frustrating as this situation? ..... rhetorical...
    Great hardware ~ but the software is getting a bit (no- VERY) skewed.
    As it is, this situation cannot be eschewed in lieu of the hardware.
    Any help, or a rope, is appreciated (just kidding about the rope).
    On my iPad I have 67 books, 382 apps and 20 Videos and 1,651 Photos (FYI: some photos are triplicated on my iPad but in my iMac's iPhoto library).

    Answers do not get any better than this. Thanks kostby.
    This addition includes background information I'm 'sneaking' into this discussion. It's related to the backup/sync/transfer problem that I'd like to fix/repair on my iPad and to a desire to understand how these b-s-t processes either work or can be cobbled together to create 'as much as possible' the results I (and others) may want.
    With more input, perhaps we can come up with 'clear' useable techniques, workarounds, and options that will benefit all of us who are frustrated with trying to figure out how these 'features' can be used to suit our individual needs.
    But as they say, "fix your own house first."
    Today, however, my schedule does not allow me enough time to parse through your thorough explanations and adjust some of the nuances to fit my original situation, figuring out where I might need more input.
    I'll do that later this evening or morning.
    As it is, I really appreciate finally having, in one place, information about the differences between B - S - T functions and an idea about the advantages and consequences to using each.
    An aside:
    Truly, I'd love to know where in the iPad User Guides (or 3rd party ones -useful links are welcomed) that this stuff is clarified, e.g. experiences like the Store above being more common.
    If indeed some exist I'll gladly "eat my rope!"
    You recommended the Sisal one, right?
    Again, this is great stuff and very much appreciated.

    ~~~~~~~~~~ an additional layer of need~~~~~~~~
    iPad - me   a frustrated 'so called' semi-expert
    iPad 2 - mom  ~less than beginner, "I hate computers" type.
    Totally different App and Music interests (of course).
    Distance apart: 560 miles for the foreseeable future
    No way to backup/sync/ etc. her iPad 2 - not a real problem.
    A need to simplify her future needs, moving beyond the initial botched setup.
    I'd been buying apps of interest, as you did, knowing they would eventually be for mom's iPad 2.
    Before trotting over to the Apple Store, I'd 'backed' up my iPad to a User Account for her on my MBP (if there was a difference between sync- backup, this choice seemed to be smarter and thankfully it was).
    With my MBP & iPad at hand I used the Store option because I expected an expert would correctly help sort out my needs for my mother's iPad. I'm not sure what they did.
    I named her iPad 2 with her name at the store.
    My goal was to use my Apple ID to pay for any apps she wanted on hers. (I assumed this would be as if I owned 2 iPads~~ and if she does not learn how to use hers, I may!). Perhaps, this arrangement is one many parents might want to do, if they knew how.
    There were no apps on her iPad 2 when I returned home. OK, sorta expected that and certainly did not want to spend the time deleting most of my Apps from her iPad.
    FYI: I was not aware of the new iTunes 'Purchased' feature as I hadn't installed those updates on my stuff yet.
    I manually 'installed' some of the apps (free and purchased) I'd picked out for her.
    FYI: it was upsetting that after adding iBooks that "Winnie the Pooh" was no longer free. Perhaps the 'purchased folder' is a workaround for that or Apple will be generous and make it available for all again.
    FYI-  a small portion of my photos were on her iPad. I think they were some free wallpaper ones. When I download some WP apps to her iPad 2, the test documents I'd made showed up. All very interesting, part of the backup system I suppose.
    As far as iTunes music: Later I will import her CD's to her MBP User's iTunes library, meanwhile I will purchase any new songs she wants to add to her iPad 2.
    Thankfully she will only have a few dozen of the hundreds of Apps I've installed on my iPad.
    All this effort seemed to be the simplest solution for her and I. And may yet still be so.
    In any case, the whole process is more complicated than it should be and will require diligence to maintain and sort out properly, if indeed it can be.
    But, as I know, I've got to "fix my own house first."
    ~~later~~
    and thanks so much for your time helping us all out
    If you want to change where your backups are stored then you can't do it directly in iTunes, that will use your main drive for backups. But if you are using windows then see if this post from turingtest2 helps : https://discussions.apple.com/message/22283073#22283073
    Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.
  • Best backup strategy
    Time Machine is brilliant. It's saved me many times.
    But recently, the backup drive with a year's worth of backups, died.
    I therefore lost ALL my backups.
    Not a major problem as I still have my current data and having re-formatted the Time Machine drive it's merrily backing it all up again.  (I just hope I don't need to recover to last week's backup ... as I no longer have it.)
    But until that's finished I have NO backups!  Eeek!
    So what is the best backup strategy, bearing in mind drives can fail, houses can burn down, etc.  Should I have two or three Time Machine backup discs and keep swapping them every day so if one dies I've still got a one-day-old version?
    Making DVD backups and storing them elsewhere is very time consuming and while my data is really important to me, it defeats the object if I can get on with any work on that data as I'm constantly burning to lotsof DVDs!
    Your views would be appreciated!
    I pretty much do a similar thing, but my offsite backup goes to a locked cabinet in my office (easier to get to weekly to bring home and update then using a bank - I honestly cannot remember when I last physically went to my bank, its been years).
    TM makes a great source for restoring single files or being able to go back to an earlier version of a file.  And the clones are easier for full restoration, or even for booting from temporarily if the machines boot drive dies and you just want to get in to deauthorize it before sending in for repairs or such.  Always good to have a bootable clone around, for many reasons.
    My external clones are on firewire 800 bus powered portable drives, again for simplicity (no power cables or bricks to go with them).
    I also still burn to optical disc for specific things like filed tax returns, and other financial documents I need to keep around in the fire safe for some period of time.
    On your iMac launch iTunes and at the top next to the Apple symbol click iTunes > Preferences > Devices and tell me what you see. You last sync should be there showing only a device name. If you have an older backup it will be there as well the difference is it will be the device name with a date and time stamp. Sync and backups are two different things and there is a chance iTunes made a backup the first time you hooked up your iPhone 5.
  • Best backup of iTunes purchased music: not cd, or dvd
    let's say you have 30 gigs of iTunes purchased music. what's the best backup if you can't choose cd or dvd? i'd figure another iPod would be the answer. any opinions on the matter much appreciated.
    ipod_madness
    If you don't want CD or DVD then another hard drive is the best bet. Get on of the external drives commonly available. Preferably get a drive with a fast connection that you can use like eSATA, Firewire, or USB2. After that simply copy from your current location to the external. Another option would be to use backup software so you only have to backup changed files.
