Best bitrate/frame rate for 1080 and 720 HD?

What seems to be the best bit rate and frame rate to use for
HD video for best playback on a Mac Mini. Plan on using H.264 encoder
to be compatible with iTunes, etc. (I like iTunes for consolidating all my media).
I have downloaded several movies from iTunes, both HD and SD, and they all
look great and playback smoothly.
I will be using a 32" Samsung HDTV.

FWIW, I've been working on a 720p project and have found the "proxy" on the cinema display pretty good for judging focus. We thought we found some material with soft focus and actually took it to a post house to look at the tape on a CRT. It was out of focus.
If I remember correctly, I think Decklink made an adapter that would allow you to view HD material on the cinemadisplay. Maybe someone else can pipe up with the specifics. Someone else also recently posted this link: http://www.matrox.com/video/products/mxo/home.cfm.

  • Best frame rates for 4 different cameras in multicam

Well, I've been flopping around in different threads on this forum, but I think the question is beginning to finally take shape for me. Basically it's all about deciding on frame rates for four different cameras I will be using to shoot a 6-day intensive course I will be teaching. The video will be primarily for computer viewing (YouTube, Quicktime movies). Here are the cameras:
2 new Canon cameras capable of frame rates of 60i, 30 frames per second progressive "recorded as 60i", and 24 frames per second progressive also "recorded as 60i" (there is a known issue with importing the 30 frames per second into fcpx, as fcpx does not recognize this as progressive, but ClipWrap can get around this).
    1 Sony capable of 60i, 60P, and 24P
    1 Sanyo capable of 60i and 30P
    Possible settings:
Just do all at 60i, but people say this is not so good for computer viewing
Canon at 30 fps (using ClipWrap to see it gets recognized as progressive), and the Sony and Sanyo at 60i. Will this cause syncing or other problems, mixing frame rates like this? How bad a hit in quality is 60i on computer screens?
Canon and Sanyo at 30 fps, Sony at 60i
Same as #3, but use JES Deinterlacer to get Sony 60i to 30 fps.(I tried this out, by the way, and the resulting frame rate, after deinterlacing, showed up in the inspector window at 30, not 29.97. Is that a problem?
Anyway, I aplogogize for wearing out my welcome on this forum, and I thank everyone for creating such a wonderful bank of information.

Not sure what you're trying to achieve here - for the best overall quality, if possible, choose a frame rate that all the cameras can achieve. That way you won't lose quality in the conversion.
If you're not satisfied with that, you need to do some tests to see which gives you the effect you like best. Nobody here can help you really - it's up to you.

  • Standard frame rate for 1080p NTSC?

Hello and thanks for having me! Very new(b) to Adobe Premier, so I'll throw something basic out, thanks for your advice:
    the short version:
What is the 'standard' framerate for NTSC 1080p? Does this framerate differ from what you would use for output at 720p,
and would you choose different framerates depending on delivery method (web vs. bluray)?
    the long version:
I have at my disposal a very capable rig to work on, and just doing some basic editing for my audio CV reel. The source material is usually 1080p and sometimes 720p, whether it be streamed into my capture card HDMI from playback sources, or full production originals which I have scored for clients.
Therefore, while editing my reel together, I'd like to work at full 1080p and downconvert for smaller formats afterword.
However, I am very new to video editing, and not sure what framerate to work in. I see the available selections of NTSC 1080p at several framerates,
and I am aware of all available framerates in the US and abroad, so my question is:
What is the standard frame rate for NTSC 1080p used for BluRay or highbandwidth web transmission? Some are telling me 'use 60, its standard'. Others tell me its 24. Still others say 24 is only for working with film, or interpolating other sources to 'make your stuff look like film'.
Thank you for any answers or resources, and have a nice evening!

For Blu-ray you can have two frame rates at 1080 resolution, 30 fps interlaced, or 24 fps progressive.  1080p/30 will not go onto a Blu-ray.
At 720 resolution, you can have 60 fps or 24 fps, both progressive.
If you want to work at 1080p, your only option is 24 fps.
Web delivery is a different matter.  There are no defined standards and pretty much anything you like will play on the web.
(On a side note, drop and non-drop frame refers strictly to the timecode information, and does not regulate frame rates.)

  • Shooting with both 1080 and 720 settings on location?

    Hello,
I'm new to video world. 7D has been my camera for photography and now I'm interested in using it to do some video as well. I've been reading and searching a lot online lately and was wondering if below is the best way to approach an on-location shoot:
    1. Shoot with 'mainly 1920x1080 (24fps)' setting and 'switch to 1280x720 (60fps) setting' for the part which I know I will use the footage for 'slow motion'
    2. After finish shooting, bring all footages to CS5 premiere and use '1920x1080 (24fps)' sequence/timeline to process footages shot with both 1080 and 720 settings.
    3. Use the 'Interpret Footage' function to slow down the footage shot with 1280x720 setting and make it 24fps
Would this strategy work well or should I do the entire shoot with just '1280x720 (60fps)' setting and still use the '1920x1080 (24fps)' timeline in CS5?
Thank you for any help that you could provide as I'm eager to learn!

I think your question involves a couple of misconceptions:
assuming you're referring to Canon 7D, OnLocation does not support that camera to the best of my knowledge. For live monitoring and recording, OL works only with devices that output via Firewire (IEEE 1394), which I don't believe is true of the 7D.
while PPRO's Interpret Footage feature can serves the purpose of making a clip play in slow motion, that's not it's intent. Moreover, Premiere has better ways of achieving the goal, namely the Time Remapping feature and the Rate Stretch tool. Rather than attempting to explain those features here, I'll simply urge you to read the page in the help titled "Change speed and duration for one or more clips" (Home / Using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 / Effects and transitions / Duration and speed)
As to your most basic question of what resolution and framerate to shoot, I'm not the best person to answer that, and the OnLocation forum is probably not the best place to get an answer. I'd suggest either the Premiere Pro forum here on Adobe.com or a more general forum such as dvinfo.net, creativecow.net, or dvxuser.com.

  • Frame rate for FLVs in FLEX, 10, 12, or 15?

We are using Flex to create a rich internet application that
delivers a lot of video which is then synchronized with a series of
screen events. Our concern has to do with the frame rate for the
FLVs. We are shooting at 30fps and have been told that the delivery
should be a multiple of 30, hence either 10 or 15fps. But Flex is
at 24fps, so we were wondering if the FLV should be delivered at
    12fps. Any advice?

you need to optimize your code/display especially if you're creating an app for a mobile device.
one of the easiest things to do is to enable the cacheAsBitmap property of most movieclips and assign a cacheAsBitmapMatrix to those movieclips that would benefit.

  • How to auto-detect a baud rate on UART or Serial port. and how to handle different baud rates for Transmission and Reception

    Hi,
Till now i have used only single baud rate for opening a port, writing some stuff and reading back from other end.  This time requirement is little different, can SerialPort class
be used to have different baud rates for Tx and Rx, I have not seen that in the msdn, but any other ideas also welcome!!!. I am experimenting!!!

When I look in the Info.plist file for the AppleUSBCDCDriver kext, which is what the driver should be for a USB modem, there are three driver personalities listed: DeviceClass = 2, DeviceProtocol = 0, DeviceSubClass = 0; DeviceClass = 2, DeviceProtocol = 0, DeviceSubClass = 2; DeviceClass = 2, DeviceProtocol = 1, DeviceSubClass = 2. When I look at the info for the Phone with USB Prober, the class, protocol and subclass are all 0 and it is assigned to the AppleUSBComposite driver which appears to be a default when it doesn't know what else to use.
Does that information come from the phone or is it assigned by the Mac? I'm wondering if the Mac doesn't recognize the phone and is assigning default values, or if the phone is responding with the wrong values causing it not to be assigned to the right driver. Are there other USB utilities out there which could possibly configure the phone's USB port to identify itself correctly?

    Hi,
Please check "Excise tax rate" in J1ID and check whether you have mantained Excise rate againts Chapter ID and Exe. Ind 1 or 2.
The final excise indicator for excise duty is maintained based on the excise classification of the company and vendor, company and customer. For each of the final indicators, the excise duty rates are maintained.

  • How to sync NTSC and PAL clips to same frame rate for multicam edit

    Hi there,
First time poster so sorry for the newbie question. I'm trying to get 2 standard NTSC clips and 1 standard PAL clip about a hour long each which shot the same event at the same time, to sync up so that I can go to multi-cam and edit them like a movie sequence. I tried that, but they start unsyncing about 10 minutes in. I gather it's because of the different frame rates. I tried using "interpret footage" and changed the PAL 25fps to 29.97fps and everything got sped up. I tried rendering the PAL clip as an NTSC clip but it ended up looking a bit fuzzier. As I want to end up with an NTSC clip in the end, how can I make these clips sync up properly?
Any, tips to help this newbie greatly appreciated with many thanks.

    Hi Jonathan,
It's not always so easy to do NTSC <-> PAL conversions, and it's impossible to do them in Premiere while maintaining any degree of quality.
You can do a good job of this with AviSynth (freeware) but the learning curve may be a bit steep for a newbie. I also hear that ProCoder ($500+) does a good job of this but I've never tried it.
As for the sync, you can chop up your PAL clip within the muticam sequence (leaving some "holes") and match up particular points manually. You'll obviously have to edit around the holes.

  • A question about Frame Rate in FCPX and Motion 5

I use a Canon Legria HV40 shooting at a frame rate of 25fps
Is it essential to set the frame rate in Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 to 25fps as well?
The reason I'm asking this is that I recently put together a series of clips shot with the HV40 in a FCPX project with the default settings of 60fps and it didn't seem to matter - everything worked as expected..

FCPX automatically 'confirms' any clip rate to the Projects settings.
But ... more rendering to do (=time), 'un-eveness' could lead to blur/quality loss (=how do you divide 25 frames over 60 equally?) ...
Best practice is: cam, project, delivery = same frame-rate.
Exception: for nice slow-mo: HFR on cam, low fps on Project ....

  • Best presets in PE10 for MJPG and MPEG4AVC

    Hello,
I'm looking for the best presets for the following sources:
    1. MJPEG from Canon cameras, 640x480, square pix, 30fps
    2. H264, MPEG-4 AVC (avc1), 1280x720, square pix, 30fps
I found a few presets but they don't match the above perfectly but I recall from previous PE versions that even when different resolution was selected (720x480) I could create output file with res 640x480 and square pixels.
Just to clarify - I'd like to create different projects for videos 1. and 2. If possible I'd like to have one project with mixed content of 1. and 2. and output format of 2. but this is not that important - if not achievable a separate 1. and 2. are still OK.
What will be the best output codec and format to use? I'd like to share the video on Win PC and looking for best quality/size parameter.
Thank you in advance for any comments/hints.

I was exploring the preset issue more and more and was looking for a way to modify the existing presets to match my sources.
I have found that presets are stored in: \Adobe PE 10\Adobe Premiere Elements 10\Settings\SequencePresets\
The preset files are saved in XML format. Analysing the files I have found the following section:
    <VideoFieldType>0</VideoFieldType>
    <AudioTimeDisplay>200</AudioTimeDisplay>
    <VideoTimeDisplay>105</VideoTimeDisplay>
    <AudioChannelType>1</AudioChannelType>
    <AudioFrameRate>5292000</AudioFrameRate>
    <VideoFrameSize>0,0,640,480</VideoFrameSize>
    <VideoFrameRate>5080320000</VideoFrameRate>
Other parts of the file are not really relevant, most of them are comments and description.
The above example is for 640x480p50
I couldn't find relation between videoframrate value and fps so I went ahead and checked other profile files.
    Found out the following:
    PAL
    DSLR
    640x480
    50
    50
    5 080 320 000

    1920x1080p
    25
    25
    10 160 640 000
This was still not meaningful but I noticed the higher fps the lower value we get.
On top of that 10 160 640 000 divided by 5 080 320 000 gives exactly 2 which is the same as 50fps divided by 25 fps (corresponding fps values)
    I was wondering what will we have for 1 fps (or 1 sec) - so 50 x 5 080 320 000 = 254016000000
    The same for 25 x 10 160 640 000 = 254 016 000 000
So what is that magic number?
I have found the following post http://forums.adobe.com/thread/445538

    Report
XMP stores time values in a unit called "ticks". The conversion factor is 254,016,000,000,000 per second. This value was chosen so that we could have integer representations of all times in all of the common frame rates.
Now having this knowledge I have made a copy of one of the presets and modified the video frame rate value to match my 30 fps.
I have divided the magic number by 30 and got the following: 8 467 200 000
I made a new project with this preset, it seems PrE recognised it correctly and now my project is set to 30fps.
I'm going to test and compare the results what if I do the same project with 60fps.

  • Export XML in right frame rate  for resolve?

    Hi!
I'm in serious need for some help! When I import my exported XML sequence from premiere in to DaVinci Resolve 10 lite, I get an error message saying "The imported sequence frame rate (25) must be the same as the project frame rate (23,976)." All of my settings in Premiere that I can think of is set to 23,976fps, but if I understand the error message right, DaVinci claims the XML is 25fps... doesn't make any sense at all. I've tried for several hours now getting this to work, but it won't.
I would really appreciate some help with this one, I'm in a hurry (as always, we're behind schedule). Worked with Davinci many times before, never had any problem with it.
    Regards
    /Patrik

I am not a Resolve user, but could it be that Resolve has been set up for a 25fps project? And maybe the lite version restricts your frame size?
    Just curious.

  • Frame rate for camera does not match with AVI output

    Hello,
I'm taking a video from a Basler A504K camera of well plate bottoms deflecting down. I have a frame rate indicator from the Vision Acquisition to see at what fps the camera is acquiring images, and I also have a frame rate controller at the IMAQ AVI Create VI.
The problem is when I set the frame rate at the Create VI. The higher I set the frame rate, the fewer frames it seems to take. For example when I play the videos on Windows Media Player, at 10fps, the video length is 60s. At 100fps, the video length is 6s. At 20fps, it's 30s, and at 50fps, it's 12s. Obviously, the video length decreasing by the factor by which I increase the fps. But since higher frames per second videos show a slower/longer videos, since they have more images to display per second?
I need to be able to see a slow increase and decrease in the well deflections smoothly. At high frame rates, the video goes by so fast that I cannot analyze the deflections. At low frame rates, the video is slower, but there are too many missing frames so the deflection is not smooth (ie. you see no deflection one second, and the next, you see the peak deflection without seeing the gradual increase in deflections). It is very hard to find an "ideal" frame rate, so I was wondering if there was another way to control the frame rate such that I have high fps, and longer video lengths?
I'm attaching my VI. The bottom loop is where all the Video and Camera controls are. The top loops is to control pressure gauge and valve (just ignore that loop)

    Hi B.J. Kim,
The problem you're seeing with the fps and video length makes sense to me.  If you keep the overall frame count constant and change only the rate of playback, then the video time will be indirectly proportional, as you have noticed.  Just from simple math, it appears like you kept the video image at a constant of 600 total frames while changing the frame rate between 10, 20, 30fps, etc.  If you're looking to have more resolution in you video, maybe you could increase the actual frame rate of acqusition from your camera. You may also try placing a small millisecond wait in your while loop to slow down execution speed.

  • FCPX Mixed Frame Rates? 30fps AND 24fps in same project?

Just got done doing a multicam shoot for a large event where I had multiple people helping me out. We all shot at 1080p on a variety of Canon DSLR cameras and a Go Pro and a MiniDV Consumer Cam. I thought everyone got the memo to shoot at 30fps, and most everyone did, however one of my Canon cameras shot at 24fps. I know I've heard in the past mixing frame rates can cause issue in other programs, and I know FCPX can handle multiple frame rates, but what sort of trouble am I in for if I want to use footage from cameras using 30fps and a camera using 24fps in the same final product? Is the 24fps stuff going to choppy or weird if I use it in a 30fps sequence/project? My final deliverable at this point can be 30fps or 24fps, it is not stated and I want to make sure evrything looks good so what should I set my project settings for? Any ideas?

Ah - no - conforming simply resets the frame rate information. You should re-conform it back to 29.97...
Here's what I think you'll need to do. If the majority of your material is at 23.98, make your main sequence that. Cut everything at that 23.98 - you'll have to render any 29.97 material then, but when you've locked picture, look at the sections with 29.97 stuff and if it looks okay, just skip to making the DVD. If it doesn't, you'll have to insert a pulldown by exporting your sequence then bringing the quicktime back in, adding a pulldown with Shake ($500) or Nattress frame rate converter ($99) - OR try this - edit it to tape and a pulldown will be inserted, then recapture.
Once you have a 29.97 version of your clip, cut it into a 29.97 sequence and re-cut in the 29.97 material (now you won't need to render). Then export for your DVD.
Now - after all this, are you sure that your 30fps material is NOT 29.97 with a pulldown? Did you check this yet?
