Best bitrate video and sound 320x? N78 h.264

Hi there,
I was searching for posts about the most efficient bitrate for videos encoded for the N-series, with a 320x240 screen. I found a few, but thought I could write one my self.
I am a mac user since way back and a SE user until today. I now have a N78 with an 8GB card and find myself very happy about it. This post will be written as I go along. This is also my first post ever in a Nokia forum so don´t shoot
A 320x240 pixel screen makes a lousy cinema, but it is better than nothing when you are out traveling or waiting for something. So how do we make the best out of it.
My idea was to put some movies and TV-series on the phone. Best quality, smallest file size. To do that I guess Mpeg4 with h.264 would be the best option, so I'll use that.
Lets say we have a file that is 700mb and maybe 656x278 pixels. This is more than double the width we have to our disposal (320 pixels). It is also not far from double the height we have (240 pixels). So if we make it half as wide and don't distort the format, it should look like this 328x139.
This means we may get away with 1/4 of the size in megabytes. As we now can almost fit 4 328x139 images on the 656x278 image.
But too little data can eat away at colors, depth and brightness before it start to show artifacts (correct me if I am wrong) so...
I'll encode one at 175mb (0,25) and one at 250mb (0,36).
4 movies with great sound on 1gb is not that bad at all. Although it would be nice with 5.
Ok, thats now encoding and we'll look at the result later, but what did I do about the settings? I chose Mpeg4 and h.264 encoding. I also chose two times pass for VBR.
VBR means variable bitrate. This means if the image is standing still and not too much is moved around, the codec can save space by not updating those areas until necessary.
For the codec to do a good job, it needs to take a look at the data firs. This is called a pass. The second pass uses the first pass to fine tune. Always use two pass if you can and have the time.
I also set the file size to 175mb and 250 mb. This means the codec will to its best to stay within these boundaries.
Resolution was set to 320x136 pixels. If you use your calculator to find the resolution the height should be 135,7 pixels, but you can't use that and it has to be a pair. So 136 it is.
If you wonder what program I use, it is VisualHub with ffmpeg as the encoder (dowloads automaticly after starting the program). It is only Mac, but there are probably lots of these programs out there for the PC.
Ok, the results are in...
175mb file turned out to be 166,70mb
Datarate: 213,38 kbits (VBR)
Sound: AAC, Stereo (L R), 48,000 kHz
Picture quality:
Visible artifact when enlarged 2x
Still visible at normal size
Two days beard can... not be seen in face
Less clarity/a little blurry
250mb file turned out to be 238,31mb
Datarate: 305,04 kbits (VBR)
Sound: AAC, Stereo (L R), 48,000 kHz
Picture quality:
No visible artifacts when enlarged 2x
No visible artifacts at normal size
Two days beard can be seen in face
But I feel this is at the edge.
So I'm happy with the result. A 700mb movie reduced to less than 250mb. Good clarity, good sound.
Another user in this forum used the same program, but used the automatic settings. I tried that too. Mpeg4, h.264, 320x and quality high (not best).
The files were too big for my taste (above 300mb) and not so much better looking. Standard setting resulted in artifacts and still too big a footprint.
This movie was not the most action filled movie I have seen. There was a lot of interior scenes and talking. Still, the camera was moving and panning.
So if you have a mac, and a phone with a 320x240 screen that can handle h.264 video... I can recomend these settings in VisualHub for a 700mb file in 35 mm anamorphic CinemaScope.
Remember. If you do it the way I have done it here, you have to fill inn the correct image size yourself in VisualHub. If you use the automatic option, you don't have to do that.

One of the following steps should help.
1. Install Adobe Flash Player.

5. Turn off Extensions/Plug-ins if any that may interfere with Flash working properly.

I have just bought the mac. I'm struggling to import video AND sound from my Sony DCR-SR87 hard disk handycam camcorder. From what I've read already, I ended up purchasing and downloading Quicktime MPEG2, and used the Utility MPEG Component Lion from downloaded MPEG Streaming 1.9.3b6 to enable video and sound to play on the computer directly from the camcorder. The problem is that when I import these clips using iphoto (it pops up when I connect the camcorder), the sound does not accompany the video onto the computer. I've hit something of a brick wall and would really appreciate any help.

If i open more than 12 tabs with youtube videos and let then open, on every new tab video and sound corrupted.
I'm using Firefox 9 x64 nightly and Flash 11 beta2 x64.

Are videos playing on the other tabs?

12 youtube pages are open by the time you get to 12 or 13 the video and audio are corrupted?

Rented Movie Video and Sound out of sync

I love renting movies from ITunes , but there is this ongoing issue with video and sound syncronisation. I have Window 7 64bit with i7 processor and the latest version of Itunes. I have gone through the settings of altering the sound properties on Quicktime player and Windows to 16bit 44khz which had improved it alot.
But when watching a film half way through the sound appears to overtake the video. Would this be a setting on the latency currently set to 33.000ms and should increasing this cure the problem?
I'll try altering the settings on one more film , if that doesn't work then ITunes for me is history.

Does it behave the same way when you watch the video on your computer? What you observed is not that uncommon since some formats/recorders tend to loose sync between the video and audio.

Editing Movie Video and Sound Tracks Program

Hi.. Does any one know of a program that I can use to fix a time difference between the video and sound track files in a movie? I've used DVDremaster to convert the movie for my iPod. but there is delay of a few seconds. between the sound and video tracks.

Lost 200+ pictures and many videos and sound clips

So, I wanted to update the iOS to iOS5, but something went wrong. It backed up (so I wasn't too worried), but it didn't restore properly. Error "-1". A pretty much unknown error. I tried again 2 day's later, and it worked like a charm.
BUT, in the 2 days, I went to a championship DTM race, about 600km (370 miles) away, shot over 200 pictures and many many videos and sound clips. We even stopped at the Nürenburgring Nordschleife before the DTM on the way and took the car to the track a few times. Awesome.
After the restore, I had all my previous stuff back, but lost all of the Nürenburgring Nordschleife and DTM pictures... Is there any way to get those back? iTunes restored my iPhone without asking me! So I lost everything as soon as I started up iTunes...

Lost video and sound

Was happily making a movie. I reviewed it and got a screen which was all pixelated. Made the mistake of saving at that point. Now, although my movie looks fine in the time line, when reviewing my movie, I get sound at the start, but no video. Sometimes I get no sound as well.
What happened? It looks ok in the time line, but even when I select a clip, I get to video in the video window.
Help!

OK, here's some more info on my iMovie dilemma.
When I preview my movie, I see no video, and only some of the sound clips/music work. I cannot trace it to a single sound track, however.
I tried to send the movie to my camera, and it worked perfectly (video and sound in the camera and video on the computer), until it reached a certain clip (actually a photo with the KB effect).
When I dig up the media file for that clip, it plays perfectly in QT. in iMovie, however, (during the camera export) all I get are pixels and basically the movie quits there. Although it moves across the timeline, nothing shows in the viewer and I get a blue screen on my camera.
After that, when I previewed the movie, I got nothing; just a bar moving across the timeline. Restart iMovie, and I get the same result I started this post with.
When I began the import to the camera, I got a notice about some clips needing to be rendered. Out of fear of messing things up more, I chose proceed only, vs render and proceed. Would choosing render and proceed fix it, I wonder . . .

What's the best way to sync video and sound?

If I'm going to make a music video with performance shots (lip-syncing) interspersed with story-line shots, what's the best way to line them up. I mean, I start with some video shot from a car while the song is playing, then transition to a shot of me singing. Say I get the singing clip lined up perfect, then when I add the transition, isn't that going to mess with the timing? And of course, I'll be doing this multiple times throughout the video. Say I get the first one right, then add some more storyline video and another performance clip and I lock that (second) clip to the audio. Isn't that going to shift my first performance clip when I add a transition? Am I making sense?

First look at all your material ..'review' it.
As you say so rightly: "..then when I add the transition, isn't that going to mess with the timing?.." ..yes; but only if you haven't allowed for the length of each transition when you first line up your clips.
So watch your footage, think where you want to cut it, and then immediately think "what kind of transition there, and for how long?" ..Imagine it, in your head, so if you think "that would work best with a quick two-thirds of a second dissolve" jot down that you want to leave an extra two-thirds of a second at the start of the clip which you want to transition into.
In the US of A, at 30 frames per second of NTSC video, two-thirds of a second is 20 frames. (..The frame counter gets up to 0:29 and then changes to 1:00, because the 30th frame changes it over to the next second..)
In Europe the frame rate is 25 per second - so after 0:24 comes 1:00 - so two-thirds of a second is about 0:16.
So when you start to cut your video clips, if you're going to have a two-thirds of a second dissolve between your first two, you'll need to leave an extra 20 (NTSC) or 16 (PAL) frames at the start of your second clip, before the action you want begins onscreen, so that those frames will be "eaten away" in the dissolve between the end of the previous clip and the start of the clip which follows it.
If you definitely want to see the last few frames of "lip-sync" - for some reason - of the first (outgoing) clip, then leave the extra frames on the end of that clip, instead of at the start of the following clip, but it usually works best to ensure that the follow-on clip starts with those extra "sacrificial" frames.
If you want to use any embedded audio that's in the video clips - and you're not simply matching up the video to external sound (..such as an iTunes track or your own material which you're pre-recorded..) then be sure to Extract the audio from your clips as soon as you've cut them, and before you apply any transitions. This keeps their audio safely "marooned" on an audio track, where you can edit it separately, and then match it to the edited video.
So prepare all your video first, and cut it to have excess "tops and tails" which you can eat away during the transitions. (The only transition which doesn't eat away material is iMovie's "Overlap", which freezes the outgoing clip, and dissolves the incoming clip into that freeze-frame. But that - in my opinion -doesn't look to good with music videos, because it freezes the flow of the video, and makes it seem too pointlessly 'jerky'.)

Video and sound not working

I have found several issues with Itunes on various computers where when playing trailers in Itunes, there is NO video and NO sound. All of the affected machines are on Windows 7 Professional mostly 64 bit. Some Dell Desktops and some Lenovo laptops. There seems to not be any pattern. Uninstalling Itunes and re-installing does not fix this issue. Some machines with same above OS have no issues. All are on iTunes 11.1.3.8 version. I have searched through many formums and it appears this issue has been occuring for many many years. I see forum's back to 2008. There seems to be no really resolution to this issue. Anyone else having these problems and or what other things have you done to resolve this?

Mac mini having issues with video and sound

all of the sudden my mac is having issues playing video or sound. videos or songs will start but only play for a second or two before freezing. This happens with videos on my mac, Youtube, spotify... pretty much across the board!

Well, I'd open Font Book, it's included with OSX, & see what it says for Validate & Duplicates.
I would also like to add I am new to Apple computers and I'm doing my best to stay up to par with whats what and understanding!
No problem, we were all new to everything once, do let us know if you need more help or clatification.

Episodes with corrupted video and sound

I have a season pass for Chuck season 3, and i have reported errors on some of the episodes where the end is corrupted so the picture freeze and sound is just noise.
Unfortunately the support wont help, they just say that i cant get a refund (i never asked for refund, just for a new download of the file) are there anywhere i can contact when support wont help?
