  • Software package list for best experience of Arch with Gnome DE.

I have been a long time Ubuntu user but due to power regression issues have to stop using it on new laptop (Thinkpad T420). Arch linux is the obvious choice to try and i did try it this weekend. I like the base and i think i might stay with it. I seems to have far better battery life without any tweaking - low temperature, no fan no TLP no kernel issues so far. I am having problem setting up Arch linux because of its stripped down nature. I guess i will have to read a lot to make it work me.
My question is i might not be having best experience of Arch with gnome. Is their a list or meta package like ubuntu-desktop which will install all/most of the commonly used programs and settings and from their i can customize it? Or is tweaking done in bits and pieces in Arch?
    Thanks.

There is no meta-package like ubuntu-desktop in Arch. You have to build your system the way you find it most comfortable.

  • What is the best email client for ipad 2

what is the best email client for ipad 2

Im going to go ahead and assume your talking to me?
I ended up in this thread in search of a functional Exchange ready mail client capable of supporting multiple mail profiles. Since there are no free applications to accomplish this in the app stor, which I can find, I figured I'd leverage the 'community' for some direction before throwing good money after bad.
As I assume Im not the only one to do this, I figured I'd help straighten these folks out on the lingo (as they werne't applying it properly) and the sassy 'sound like apple users' comment references the way ANTI-apple folks assume you people are less than adequite users.
If I called an apple an orange, you would say I was wrong. If I did it repeatedly, after correction, you would assume Im incompetant.
Seriously, its a stupid machine and will only do what you tell it. (true for all computers, apple or otherwise)
So if I ask for a mail client, dont give me a provider. If I ask for a service, dont name a client.
Your right, this post is old. And stilll doesnt have an answer. . .
In response to MichelPM, I didnt call your baby ugly. The 'Bandwagoning' is cute though. My advice is sound, and helping you folks not to look so... well... stupid.
Since you interceded though, how about a little help? What mail client do you use? Is it exchange Compatible, with active sync? Does it offer multi-profile support? And the clients want images in their signatures, and multi signature support. (I can do this with my android phone )
Im looking forward to your responses.

  • Best POS system for use with Mac?

What is the best POS system for use with Mac?  Using Quickbooks and paper invoices and inventory.  Would like to upgrade to POS system.

Ideally it is best to have seperate (discreet) EHD's for a PC and Mac due to their differences in HD formatting. However, this is not always feasable but there are alternative solutions availble. Among those are:
Creating and useing a Dropbox account that can be shared by PCs, Macs, IOS and Android devices. Dropbox allows for 2GB of free storage and additional storage is available for a small monthly fee.
Another possiblity is formating an EHD so that it may be shared by both a PC and Mac, this format is FAT 32. The downside of doing this is the size of the files written to the HD are limited to 4GB.

  • Best VNC client for iPad

What is the best VNC client for the iPad? So far I've heard about iTeleport by Jaadu, Desktop Connect, Mocha, iTap, VNC Viewer. Any advice much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    HL

After reading the various reviews on VNC clients, I went ahead and purchased "Screens". I am happy to say so far the connection via wi fi was extremely easy and fast. I was connected in less than 5 minutes after the download. The UI is very intuitive and speed is excellent.
The only complain I have of it so far is I wish they had a full screen mode option when viewing the desktop, and that would be a minor complain. I am having problems connecting via my iphone on a 3G network which according to the website I should be able to, but not such luck here.
It might be because I might be putting in the incorrect IP address. My Airport Extreme Base is daisy chained to another non apple wifi router, and the IP address I am getting on my MAC may not be a public IP address, and I am not sure how to work around that.

  • Are there any sound cards with best driver support for Arch?

I was wondering if there are any sound cards that have the best driver support for ArchLinux? I currently own a Creative Labs X-FI Platinum Edition. The main reason I like the Platinum is that has an interface you can plug MIDI and Audio ports into. It seems to me, however, that Creative is the worst company to support Linux drivers. If anyone has any opinions, please feel free to comment. According to all my research, ALSA sound drivers are the most supportive for sound. Am I also correct in this assumption?

yeah, creative sucks. go with m-audio. they support linux unlike creative.

  • Please suggest best GUI client for Linux setup?

    HI,
I need to setup OBIEE 11g on Linux. Please suggest best GUI client to connect to linux and setup OBIEE.
    appreacite for your help.
    Thanks
    Jay.

    Hi Jay,
You can use Xming server for linux. I have downloaded Xming server 6.9.0.31. It worked well with Windows XP(32 bit) as well as Windows 7(32 bit). I have used it for Oracle HTTP Server installation and OBIEE 11g installation
After installing, to start Xming go to command prompt and start. This invokes the Xming application properly when compared to double click starting.Go to cmd. Go to location C:\Program Files\Xming Enter this
    Xming.exe :0 -clipboard -multiwindow -ac.
Note: colon zero ended up in a smiley!
You will see Xming popup in your right side. Go to putty session and export your display with this command.
    export DISPLAY=172.45.62.143:0.0
Replace the ip address with your system ip address. The above one is example.
Note: If your putty session is in client network, use the ip address that is in Ethernet: client server.
Test if display is exported properly with this clock command which gives a GUI popup of clock.
    xclock &
    Hope this helps.

    Amrutha.

  • [solved] Arch with GNOME 2?

    Hi everyone,
I'm a new Arch user, have been using Ubuntu for about two years now and decided this morning to give Arch a try; the install wasn't too bad, the only ultimate problem was GNOME 3... I'm hoping somebody here can tell me if there's a way to install Arch from scratch with GNOME 2 and Compiz instead of GNOME 3? I ended up removing G3 and I'm now using KDE, which is also not what I want, but certainly a million times better than G3.
I had a quick look around, and it's clear that I'm not the only one who hates G3, the old threads on this forum regarding a downgrade are pointing to a lot of empty links, hence my new thread on the matter.
I understand that it's faster to use G3 and so-on, but really it looks like it was built for people who haven't got a clue how to use a PC, and if I wanted that sort of "simplicity" then I would have brought a Mac. I absolutely DESPISE GNOME 3 and I'm really sorry if that has offended anyone.
All I want is the simple, minimal interface that I had with G2, with the cute little foot in the top left corner, my customised menus and the basic window effects; that's it. I don't want Duplo-sized icons, I don't want fancy effects and I don't want the 0.0001 seconds of speed difference or extra security and reliability, because I'd rather my PC burst into flames from some G2 bug than I ever use G3 to do my computing.

    That's hilarious! lol.
G3 is actually pretty good. If you don't like gnome-shell - then simply don't use it.  Compiz works really well in G3 ( i am using the latest version 0.9.5, compiled yesterday from source).  you can customize gnome3 menus, much in the same way as Gnome2.  However, the menus are fairly slow, when i compare them to my gtk2-menu - which had zero-delay in opening.  I've actually removed gnome-panel and replaced it with other tools, as i found gnome-panel to be a bit lame in G3.....you may not mind it though.
anyways,  I wouldn't be too worried about running G3 - a lot of people are in a scramble because they aren't interested in the shell. but the shell isn't a requirement. I think the developers would just prefer that everybody uses GS. while there was talk of not having it supported in the future, i doubt that will happen ~ as we all know Canonical will be porting Unity to run on top of the gnome 3 stack. (right now it uses gnome2).  So i tend to think we should be able to run fallback, for a long time
it just might take some extra-tweaking, to get it the way you want your desktop to be. I'm now actually liking it better than gnome2, myself.  but it did take a bit of adjustment, but "under the hood" - gnome 3 has some nice features and improvements ove G2...
theming isn't too difficult either - so if you don't like fat menus/giant icons... then, you can use a theme that doesn't have that - or edit your theme instead. (i sort of did both). I'm actually working on a nice dark theme, that has gtk2 style window-decorations (narrow/thin), slim menus and some other goodies. Gtk3 - looks really great too!

  • Best hard drive for use with Time Machine

    Hi,
Has anyone determined what the best external hard drive is for use with Time Machine? Is there a particular one that works exceptionally well with Time Machine, or is it much of a muchness?
I'm looking for a Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 drive that STAYS ON all the time, and doesn't automatically spin down or spin up like the rubbish WD My Book drives do.

I can't tell you if it is the "best" hard drive for you to use with TM, but I'm quite happy with the 500 GB Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo TurboUSB I bought recently. It is quiet, quite inexpensive for the capacity (I paid about $120 for one on sale at Fry's), & completely compatible with OS X & TM.
Best of all for me, it automatically powers down when my iMac sleeps. It also spins down after a time if the Mac's Energy Saver preference "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked; otherwise it remains spun up until the Mac is put to sleep or switched off.
It comes with "Turbo" USB & Memeo "AutoBackup" software, neither of which I installed. (The box didn't claim these extras came in a Mac version but both Mac & Windows versions were included on the CD.) Out-of-the-box, I reformatted the drive with the Apple Partition Map scheme & two partitions, a 160 GB one for cloning my internal drive & the rest for TM. The drive works perfectly for both uses & seems quite fast, as one would expect from a 7200 rpm SATA drive.

  • Best wireless router for use with Powerbook 15"

Not everyone uses the Apple Airport, and some who do have mixed feelings about the various models.
What is the best wireless router, from any manufacturer, for use with an AlBook? What has the least problems, most reliable, strongest signal, fewest drops, best range, etc in your experience.

    Joeski,
I'll have to get back to you on what card my wifes laptop is using. I think it's a 802.11a/g, but I will confirm. My Powerbook 1.67 has the built in wireless card and to be honest, I have never looked to see what it uses.
We have our D-Link router set up for WPA2.
Neither her or I have had any issues when we have had to connect anywhere to any other wireless network and when I come home, I can connect back to my router automatically since my network is set up on my Powerbook as my 1st network of choice in connecting.
As far as replacing the antenna, I really dont know. It's has 3 antennas on it and I get a great signal, so I never thought about replacing it.
Hope this information is helpful to you!

  • Best drum loops for use with Logic? Ease of use, usability, etc.

    Hi,
I have BFD2 but find it slow to load and sometimes clumsy auditioning loops within Logic. I love the Apple Loops library but I wondered if people are importing MIDI drum files for use with Logic. Do all drum files use the same MIDI mapping? If I drop a BFD2 loop into a Logic drum virtual instrument will it work? I bought a few packs from Groove Monkee but have yet to use them with Logic. I only use them within BFD2.
I'm basically looking for a seamless way to stay within Logic to improve my workflow. It's taken me days sometimes to get a drum track right by going back and forth with BFD2. Is there a concept I'm missing that would make it easier?
    Thanks

  • Recommendation Request: Best flatbed scanner for use with Mac and iPhoto?

I have a flatbed scanner that Mac doesn't recognize. It's 9 years old, does a great job, but only works with Windows. Period. Don't ask what model or anything, I've already done the research, it's hopeless. MOVING ON... I'm tired of BootCamping to Windows, running scans, and then rebooting and hunting down the files...
So, what flatbed scanner do you use, rank it on scale of 1-10, and how much did it cost?
This thread might be useful to many people... FLATBED scanners, only, please. Make another thread for sheetfed scanners if you like.

This site has some good info on many scanners: Scanner Reviews | Flatbed Scanner |.
I'd look for one with high optical resolution. It's akin to the zoom in digital cameras, optical vs digital. FWIW I use a Canon 8600F (now replace by the 8800F) which does slides, film strips as well a photos. What I like about it is that you can scan multiple photos and have each saved to it's own file. Other brands of scanners offer that as well I'm sure but it'sjust a feature to consider. My scanner also came with a bundled copy of Photoshop Elements for Mac. Not the latest version but worked very well. Its replacement also bundles PSE.

  • Best irc client for a mac 10.9 os

I was not give a choice for this OS. So anyway.
What is preferred IRC client for mac  - mavericks. 10.9.2? Google and got lots of suggestions but none originated from an apple forum.

Ircle was my old favorite, but I can't find its download site anymore.  You might want to look at:

  • Best Digital Camera for use with iMovie 09

i'm purchasing an iMac next week and am looking for a digital camera, a major concern is video compatibility. I have found mostly just threads on problems, OKAY, so i know what NOT to get. But i would like to know what TO get. The camera i have found I like most is the Casio Exilim EX-S12bk, but it doesn't play well with iMovie due to the .AVI format it records to, the actual codec is motion jpeg i believe. I'm looking for something with optical zoom in recording mode, hi def video, and of course great photos. Very noobish to cameras so bells and whistles are not as important as usability. But i want to import straight to iMovie, i don't want to get freeware, no conversions, or anything. That's more work than i want to spend. Any help?

yeah, i've upped my dollar level to 380ish tops,
Sony, i've found that the only one i could really get would be the tx1 or wx1, but they don't come out till sept, and october, so too bad there, Or perhaps the Sony W290, that was an option, there was one thing i didn't like about it though, don't remember what it was, hmmm, otherwise i didn't see something i had to have
If i could wait, I think no doubt i would get the tx1 when it came out,
SOOO, I've settled on the Canon SD960, has all the features i believe i want. I was gonna go with the SD970, but the 960 is smaller and a tad cheaper. I was looking at the SD780 for some time, however, the picture quality came into ? as well as video quality. Haven't seen those complaints as far as video is concerned. Of course there are always gonna be naysayers. All the sample images i've seen look great, reviews seem to be good also. So for now, I think I'm going with the SD960.
Further, I was looking really close at the Lumix ZS3, as stated above, but it's too big for my liking, the whole Lumix line seems to be on the large size, compared to other compacts, especially the Sony cyber shot's which seem to be quite small in comparison with other brands. Overall though it seemed like a great camera.
Still not sure why i'm passing on the Sony W290......and am also VERY, tempted to wait altogether and get the WX1 or TX1, but i really don't want to wait, if i take great care of it, perhaps i can still return it after my trip !!! Walmart takes anything back if you say it *****.......
