Best Browser for older iBook.

I have an iBook G4(1.2 GHz Pwer PC) with OS X 10.3.9. Currently using Safari 1.3.2 but it crashes quite often for what seems a variety of reasons. What browser would be optimal for this older iBook given my specifications? How would I obtain/download? Thanks.

Camino is probably your best bet:

  • What is best browser for safari - google, chrome, yahoo?

    with all the security issues and enhancements in the past yea, I have a stupid question but want some opinions and input;
I use Mavericks, and Apple mail. what is the best browser for my IMac?
    Thanks,
    Don

That would be Apple's native browser Safari.
But it's very important to keep your system software up to date.
Your profile indicates your iMac is running v10.9.1.
If that is the case, then you need to update to v10.9.2 ASAP.
Download from here >  OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update
Or click Software Update from your Apple drop down  menu.

  • Best browser for HTML5 support on Android

Can anyone recommend a browser that actually works with Captivate HTML5 output on android devices? I get a variety of problems across Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin, and Ninesky. The main problem I get is no sound, but on some of them I get sound but the nav buttons don't work. I am using very simple slde sounds - one per slide. Also, does anyone know if there is an Android version of Safari?

  • Safest/best browser for 10.5?

As I'm considering moving from Leopard to SL (on my two mid-2007 model macminis), best still hesitating, I'm wondering, now Safari/Firefox/Chrome have ceased to continue supporting their browsers in Leopard, whether there are any alternatives that do continue supporting them (incl security updates etc) - maybe Camino?

    strawbale wrote:
Would it be save to use flash video?
    Yes, quite safe.
Safari is the fastest and safest browser for OS 10.5 Leopard.
    Security of OS X generally:

Security Configuration for Version 10.5 Leopard:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/Leopard_Security_Config_2nd_Ed.pdf
    Suggestions for ‘safe surfing’:
    1. In Safari Preferences/Security:
Turn off Java (but not Javascript)
Do not check the box 'Allow websites to ask for location information'
Accept Cookies only from sites you visit
    Select 'None' for Database storage
From the Safari menu, select 'Block pop-up windows'
    2. Do not allow Google to register your interests:
    Removal/prevention of Google cookies:
    http://www.google.com/privacy_ads.html
    3. Download and install Ghostery from  http://www.ghostery.com/
having read about what it does. It prevents you being tracked by outfits like Doubleclick - and there are many. Glims will indicate how many such tracking devices it has blocked: some sites use as many as 15! This Apple site uses one, sometimes two. That will effectively stop unsolicited advertising pop-ups.
    4. Do not use a cell phone for any financial transactions. Such phones are simply to easy to lose.
There is no such thing as total internet security, but what I have suggested above will go a long way towards invasive tracking. As regards other aspects of internet security, please read on:
You will find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:

  • Best Browser for 8.6

I would like your opinions on what you guys consider the best browser/s for 8.6 running on a 8500.
I'm going to connect it to my 4 port ADSL router/modem
I've always liked Netscape, then Mozilla, now use SeaMonkey on 10.3.9. I use FireFox as a secondary brower.
I've just downloaded Mozilla 1.0.2 which I think is the last Moz to support 8.6
    What's your preferences?

If you're using Mac OS 9 or later like I do I prefer Mozilla 1.3. The only problem is it's no longer available from Mozilla's web site for download. They took the link down for some odd reason. I'd say if they really think it's that buggy that maybe they should backport a more current version to Mac OS 9. Even better still would be if SeaMonkey is a Carbon app in that it would make porting to Mac OS 9 easier too. You may want to update your CarbonLib. The latest version is 1.6 & I know & remember from experience with Mac OS 8.6 that it doesn't include that version either.

  • Best browser for G5 2004

Looking to have youtube running smoothly my g5 is the mk 2 model, would someone please suggest the best browser and graphics card.thanks

    Hello,
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.

  • Charger for older iBook

I need to buy a new charger for my friend's older iBook (over 5 years old I am pretty sure) but I don't know much about it. The cord frayed at the end that plugs into the computer so I think it requires a full replacement. I don't know what model iBook it is, just that it's old and doesn't use MagSafe. Will any non-MagSafe charger do or does it need a specific one? Thanks.

You need to determine which iBook it is.
Is it one of the older, colored ones or is it all white?
If it's one of the all white ones, the _adapter for the iBook G4_ will work for a white G3 iBook (the ones with two USB ports), too.
No iBook can use the newer MagSafe adapter, though.

  • Best settings for older dvd players

anyone have any recommendations on bit rate or other compression settings for older dvd players? everything i produce plays fine on my personal dvd player that actually says dvd-r on the front, but i continuously have problems with clients players having pixel issues of freezing up. i've tried lower bit rates and such but i'd rather not go into all the different angles and just see what you guys say.
I can't be the only person out there that has clients with cheapo players!
    thanks in advance.

I don't think you are going to find a single solution to this problem. Just about every DVD player is going to have problems with some brands or types of recordable DVDs. Some things to consider or try:
1.) Educate your customers about potential DVD media problems. Potentially tricky since not everyone will freely admit or accept that such problems exist.
2.) Burn the DVD at the lowest possible rate (burn at 1X rather than 4X, etc.).
    3.) Try a different brand of DVD-R.
4.) In special cases consider using DVD-RW rather than DVD-R (some older players will actually work better with DVD-RW).
5.) Consider using the best possible DVD recorder (I'd recommend Plextor drives mated with Roxio's Toast software).
6.) Use a commercial DVD mastering service (only practical if you want to duplicate several hundred discs -- too costly for small runs).

  • Best Browser for my MacBook

My almost 5 year old MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 (I haven't upgraded yet) is overheating a lot when I use Safari 5.1.10, I've tried Chrome but I didn't like it. I'm looking for a browser that will perform well on a Core 2 Duo MacBook with 2 GBs of RAM... any suggestions?

My Safari 5.0.6 is reasonably fast. Here is my general advice for Safari users who experience speed or stability difficulties:
The measures I take to improve speed and stability of Safari 5.0.6 should resolve some of the issues with later versions. These instructions are for OS X.
I flush DNS cache daily at boot - Google for Terminal command for your OS
Use a very fast DNS server - find best for you with NameBench or use 8.8.8.8
I don't use tabs as they consume too much RAM and slow my old Mac
Turn off RSS, Fraudulent sites and Extensions
    Set Preferences/General/History to one week
Adjust Safari Reset to clear everything except history and passwords
Start Safari at least once a day with this AppleScript
Decompress the script and put it in Applications and then replace any Safari startup or Dock items with the script.
The script deletes Safari local storage and cache. It then starts Safari and activates Reset using your Reset settings. Those who wish can view the script and edit it with Script Editor.
It is possible to stop Safari 5.1 automatic refresh as this page explains:

Blazer is about the best you're going to find... Opera Mini has been tried by many folks, and found to be unstable.
Another old one is "Xiino".  It works fairly well at loading large pages that Blazer chokes on.

  • Best Browser For Old/Slowing Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac desktop from mid 2008 running Snow Leopard, software up to date, 2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo, & 2GB RAM. I have Safari, Firefox, Opera, & Chrome. Safari used to have a lot of issues until the last 2 updates for it came and it works fine now, but is a total RAM hog and is pretty slow if I have more than 2 tabs. Firefox not so much, but is slow compared to Safari & Chrome. Chrome would be my choice as it handles everything very well, but since a few months ago Chrome would randomly disconnect from the internet after browsing a few pages and I would have to quit and then relaunch Chrome. This happens regardless of whether or not I have other applications that use internet connection running. Chrome never cuts out if I'm just on youtube, so I use Safari for non Flash pages & Chrome for youtube almost exclusively. Opera... feels like a dead horse at this point. I would like to know if there are any other fast, lightweight browsers that run well on Snow Leopard that may be comparable to Chrome, or if anyone has encountered my problems with Chrome and has a fix (I've tried deleting & using appcleaner and reinstalling as well).

Personally, I would ditch any Google software, including, Chrome as it is a total OS X resource hog.
    https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en
I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.
Also, your OS X 10.6 version of Safari is out of date and has not had any security updates for quite awhile.
Your best bet is to just stay using Moziila FireFox, and no other browser, as it gets regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.
The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is STILL fully compatible with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Also, as previously mentioned, your year and model Mac can take up to 6 GBs of RAM.
This will speed up processes considerably and will help alleviate some of your slowdown issues.
If you live in the U.S. , Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC (macsales.com) has the proper RAM module or kit needed to get your Mac to the 6 GB RAM total limit.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/6400DDR2S6GP/
RAM is user installable and is, relatively, easy to install be newbie and novice Mac users.

  • Virtual Instruments for older iBook?

Hi -- a newbie Q. I have Digital Performer 5 (on the Mac), on an iBook
G4, with 768 mgs RAM and 1.07 GHz processor. I am looking for an
"all-in-one" sample library (with really good acoustic / orchestral
instruments) in the $125 price range. The newer packages (VI.ONE,
PlugSoundPro) require a faster processor. Any suggestions?

  • Best browser for OS9.0.4,small drive dial up? Netscape 6 is killing me

Have recently upgraded from Netscape 4.8 because we were getting messages from web sites that we needed 128 bit encryption, browser was out of date. Netscape 6.2.3 is taking up so much of hard drive that it will not write mail box . This machine is used by 77 year old disabled father strictly for internet and e-mail so will not be upgrading to OS X. Any advice on which browser would be best in this situation would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Couldn't speak to the encryption issue but I'm using IE5.i.7 successfully on my PB3400. Though I stuck in a 40G drive when the original froze, I did quite well w/ that original 2G, so I'd say if your 6G (if I'm reading aright) is full, it's maybe time to prune some of the deader wood. Sherlock can help you find document files unmodified for years , or all the "Readmes" and does your guy really need all his old emails—and, more to the point their attachments?

  • Best browser for ordinary use?

I use Camino almost all the time because it says on the pack it's for Apples.
I use Mozilla to get into my internat bank.
    I'm very happy.
But I see many people here praise Firefox and sometimes Safari.
Would I be even happier using Safari or Firefox or Netscape or Mozilla?
Why do Mozilla, Firefox, Camino and others from Mozilla exist side by side?
    thanks
    Gordon

I agree with Thomas--keep several browsers available as some sites prefer one browser over the other. I use Safari most of the time at home, but have to use Camino to access my workplace employees' site. That site chokes Safari and IE.
I use Camino exclusively at work because Safari broke and I cannot get it running from either my main acct or a separate troubleshooting user acct I set up.
I can tell you that I've abandoned IE forever, even though the Mac version is even so more elegant than the Windoze version.
