While studying Chinese in China I used some great apps to help me with my study. Pleco etc etc..
Now I am back home and I need productivity apps . Can people tell me what they use so I can try em out please

Is Java the best for creating business apps?

Hello everyone, I'm new to this. I programmed a bit in VB6 (lame to macho-coders... I know), and I really enjoyed it. Well I havent touched it for years and I havent even bothered trying to remember what I knew after finding out its all gone with .Net.
So I'm employed at a new firm and I'd like to get back the old app building skills I had and more.
I did alot of research on languages and decided that Java was my pick, but I'd like confirmation from someone who knows.
FYI, I only created very simple apps with VB6 a few years ago.. I do not plan to start programming as a career.
I just remember enjoying it immensely and have done side projects in the past for friends and business associates.. but I never got high powered.
I'd like to get deep into a language.
Did I make the right decision between C#/VB.net and Java? Try to be as unbiased as possible, as I realize this is a Java forum.

The just I got from most sources was: pick the language based on what you Want to Do.
I want to create business apps, not necessarily cross-platform able ones. 98% of the time my apps will be used on Windows platforms anyway. And the performance boost from MS languages is enticing.
Plus I've read from a few sources that Java is NOT cross platform interopertable.
My main reason for posting is that I'm double guessing my Java inclinations.. because I'm having trouble finding tutorials for "guys like me".
I'd like to know exactly what the heck Swing is, I mean... I got THIS,
"The javax.swing package of classes is used to create GUI components for applets and applications. Project Swing classes enable programmers to specify a different look and feel for each platform, or a uniform look across all platforms. Swing is the project code name for the lightweight GUI components in JFC."
But I have been doubting my decision enough to not download and start playing with whatever the heck Swing is.
Also, AWT looks important but I do not quite grasp how that comes into play either.
Basically I have the latest Java and Netbeans downloaded... is this all I need besides to find a great tutorial (that holds my hand) to get started? Does this Java/Netbeans package have Swing and AWT included inside them?
Or should I stick with VB and go back to VB.Net to create my easy "crankem out" apps?
I have a sinking feeling that would be best for a non-career programmer hobbiest like myself..
Originally I figured Java would teach me a much more popular terse based syntax that would be much better to know if I ever did move on....

THANK YOU to everyone that has replied this far. As you might have been able to tell from my disoriented post.. I have alot of questions and some questions I'm not exactly sure how to ask.
To define business applications- I was referring to these two ideas that SteveW2 coined: "Applications that front end a database? Multi user thin client apps? "
Mostly front end to a database and thin client apps.
Also, I should add my employer does have a full MSDN subscription so I do have access to everything at MSDN.
We have Visual Studio .Net 2003 at work as well. My company mostly programs in "MS" languages FYI.
I hope it was quite clear that I'm no zealot on brand. I'm a complete capitalist (hence the name), and have always been, "best of breed". So I have absolutely no language preference.
For general info, I am the network admin at my place of business and also do sales with small to mid-sized businesses.. but my degree is in local area network technology.
My interest in beginning programming again stems just for my personal interest... someday I DO plan to start my own business but not for quite some time. So programming is just something I used to enjoy to a small extent.
To be precise, I was only exposed to VB6. None before, none after. I created fun apps like a calculator, a simple database program, a program that half-heartedly 'locked' you out of a Win95/98 workstation without the password... things like that. And for now and the foreseeable future, thats an idea of the extent I wish to take this new venture.
I found it very simple and easy... good things as long as its still powerful... and it appears DotNet has equalized the languages (J#/C#/C++/C/VB) to a large extent. Please feel free to elaborate on why I'm correct or not correct on this analysis.
To address my "98%" statement, I meant in the foreseeable future everything I would ever create will be on ran on a Win32 system. But I do play around with Linux and wouldnt scoff at the idea of interoperability..
Being locked into MS platforms doesnt bother me either. So you probably have a feel for my neutrality.
I never realized how some people feel very strongly about languages (referring to most of the web, the responses here seem to be very fair considering I'm at Sun's site itself)!
I'm definitely more confused than ever now with the conflicting opinions.
But providing exactly WHAT I want to do with the language, will help.
I provided an example of some of the things I've done, and plan to do.. but there is one thing I've been wanting to create for years that will probably give you the best idea for my ambitions.
I'd like to create a family genealogy app, that allows me to integrate my GEDCOM files (the standard for family history files) into, integrate easy to view family photos/stories/videos... I'd like to put this program on a CD and distribute it at the family christmas some year.
Whatever language would be the best for this? Keep in mind even though I dont have strong feelings about having interoperability or not... that my time that I'm going to be investing in language "X", I DO feel it important that I learn good coding practice.
Something I always doubted about the extremely easy, and lax, VB6.

Best Approach to distribute business app

I have created a new software product called Care Control. It is a large system that works inside UK Care Homes. The system uses lots of different technology, but fundamentally I am using a SQL Server Database and an IIS Server to host an interface for IPADs or Android Tablets to connect, but within the Care Home.
I have developed three "apps" as part of the system which the Care Home staff can use to input data. E.g. the IPADs are placed on the wall within the Care Home and they use the local WiFi network to connect to a computer that is also in the Care Home. The apps are not intended to be used outside of the home on the Internet.
My preference is for the users to use IPADs to host the apps and so far most of the Care Homes who are using the product have elected to go with IPADs. I have 6 clients so far (6 different Care Homes), but there seems to be lots of interest in the product which is good.
My problem and question is: - up to now I have been using the 100 device identifiers on my Apple Developer Account to distribute these apps. I go to a Care Home, the client provides me with the IPADs they have purchased and then I install the apps directly following registering the IPAD device against my Developer Account.
However, this is unsustainable long term. If the business keeps growing I will soon run out of device identifiers. Also, I really do not want to have to go to site to provide an update!
I really want to use the App Store as a method of distribution. However, these apps are using an infrastructure that I am unable to provide external to a Care Home. Without this infrastructure (SQL Database, IIS Interface Sever etc) these apps will not work and so cannot be effectivey reviewed by the App Store staff. I have uploaded them today, but I expect they will be knocked back as the review team will not be able to get past the first screen (as they will not be able to configure the app to connect to a server).
How can I effectively distribute these business apps to my clients?
I have Android versions of the Apps and the Google Play Store gives me instant functionality to upload apps for distribution. However, the IPAD kit is better and is the equipment I want to recommend to my clients.
Is there an alternative approach I should be using? I have seen "External Testers" on the Apps tab - is this an effective way of distributing business apps that are only ever used within an organisation?

I have posted my problem here because replicating a complex infrastructure in an external environment just so Apple can test my app which happens to be the end of a long line of interconnected programs, which includes non-Apple technology, is a non-starter. What I hoped for was some insight that I may have missed. Some nugget of brilliance that would stop me having to spend thousands of pounds to recreate a secure, but accessible infrastructure on the Internet, just so I can easily distribute an ios app. So far your posts have not provided that insight.

Get rid of Norton a/k/a Symantec. It is one of the worst pieces of trash you can install on a Mac.
You do not need any additional anti-virus software than is already designed into OS X to protect your Mac against malware. I assume you paid enough for your iMac and that's part of what you paid.
If you use Windows, or are concerned about harboring viruses that target Windows, or care about friends who use Windows, then get ClamXav. It's in the App Store and it is free.
Since friends don't let friends use Windows, I have no use for it.

Your question is not clear for me to provide an answer. Basically, the shared entities like item, SOB etc provides the integration of various models and Security, Validation Rules provide the security for the data.

For Cloud Business App, we can use the new
document library integration support in the March 2014 Update.
For HTML application, we can integrate document libraries into your application like
this.
But I didn't find that there is a limitation to file size for this.

you seem to be the only one who tries to communicate with us which is great:-). I think it doesnt make much sense to ask if we develop any new apps in Lightswitch. You should probaby ask something like "would LS be a tool of your choice for a new project
if LS and mainly SL was actively developed and supported?". And my answer would be YES, YES, YES, definitely YES, because LightSwitch (I mean it's SL client) is by far the most productive tool I've ever used. For HTML development there are other tools
and frameworks, more mature and more flexible and most of them are for free. To be honest, LS HTML client is (compared to the SL one) just a bad joke - doesn't expose computed properties, default values, localization is poor...(just few main reasons) but the
main reason why I actually bought LS was that I wanted to get out of that HTML+JS+CSS+bunchofothertechnologies messy hell. Instead of it LS offered a consistent environment with ONE language of my choice (no matter if VB or C# - both are great
anyway). So I didnt hesitate and put my money and effort into it.
Well, from the current point of view it was the worst decision I've ever made in my professional life.

OneDrive for business App- On premises installation (Sharepoint 2013)

Just needed clarification regarding One Drive for Business application on iPhone/iPad.
When I connect to internal corporate network, the application works fine. However when I go on external network, it gives an error that 'You are logged in but we can't access your settings'. Is there something I am missing? Same with One Drive for business
application for laptop.
It also works fine when I connect my iPhone/laptop on VPN.
We are using SharePoint 2013 (on premises installation). Do I need to get some subscription for business in order to get the app working over the internet? I know we need Office365 or sharepoint online in order to get the app working but it works fine when
I am connected to internal network or VPN.
We do have a public IP and URL for One Drive which works fine on any browser from external internet. So the problem is only limited to the application on Apple and Laptop (windows). We are using TMG.

You may want to check the authentication types for SharePoint on-premise site internal and internet access, some authentication types are not supported, you can check if it is the case.

I'm looking for the best thesaurus app for my new iPhone 4S.
The best I've seen listed to so far is the Oxford English version for $24.99 Canadian. All the rest are Roget II or those A-Z thesauri which I've never liked.
I prefer the Roger's International Thesaurus (remember in school that yellow paperback thesaurus with the kangaroo on the front?) which has all the words divided by subject in the front, and all the words listed alphabetically in the back, subdivided by meaning, and have a number listed as to where it is in the front (ie GREEN noun greenness 44.1 verdigris 44.3 lawn 310.7 adjective inexperienced 414.17 new 841.7 etc etc etc).
I would like to find an app version of that (320,000 words and phrases in 1072 categories according to the back of the book) or the closest version.
Is there such a thing or is the Oxford English version the closest I will come to it? I consider this one of the most important apps I will put on my phone. Even more important than Facebook. haha

Yeah, I know I can restore it, but I might as well go ahead and try. I just finished a backup for icloud and itunes to make sure, I'll go ahead and restore it and set it up as new and see how that works. Seems like I have no other options at this point, I'd still like to know what they did with the Download tab in itunes store, if they removed it or if I'm just overlooking it.

There is no acceptable substitute for iDVD.
Apple believes that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:

Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced.
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that.
