Best camcorder for preteen to download videos??? Any recommendations?

My son asked for a camcorder for xmas. He wants to film his friends doing bmx bike tricks and download it to youtube. (With my approval, of course.) Any recommendations for an inexpensive camcorder that will do the job?

For beginners, for an hour of video, thats not bad at all, and the fact that its MPEG 4 video makes things clearer at half the file size of MPEG 2!

The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

Best Camcorder for Simple VIdeo & Burning DVD

Hi all. I've had a MiniDV camcorder for about 10 years that just broke. Since only 1 camcorder is sold with MiniDV, I'm nervous that I'll need to find a new storage medium for our existing movies. I'd like to buy a new camcorder to take videos of kids etc and have the ability to burn to DVD for future storage.
I don't think I'll plan on editing (but would like the capability) and I've seen the list of Apple supported products and all of the discussions here which have just made my head spin. I'm really just looking to take decent video, put the SD Card into my computer, and burn it to a good quality (not internet) DVD. I was leaning towards either the Canon FS200 or the Sanyo with iFrame but I've seen mixed reviews (which may have just been from Pros).
Lastly, we have a new (2009) MacBookPro with iMovie '09 and iDVD '09.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

This may sound counter intuitive but I and others I know get fine results using just a Canon point-and-shoot camera. A friend and I have spent some time comparing the cost and results from "dedicated" popular-priced video cams compared to our (we both own the same model) Canon S3-IS cameras. If anything - the video quality is a bit better with our "still" cameras. The current version of the S3 can be found at the Canon website. Oh - From S3 onward, this model line takes the high capacity SD cards up to (at least) 8 GB. This size memory card provides over 60 minutes of video at "full size" (640 x 480).
I carry the S3 almost daily - just in case I get a photo op or a "video op" like a fire or other emergency. I've shot video downtown with just street lights for light source: the videos need very little lightening if any under those conditions. My camera has 12 X optical zoom and the latest version has 20X optical zoom. I also like that this model line continues to use 4, AA size batteries (you can use rechargeable NiMb AA, of course). Shop around, I'm pretty sure you can get the latest version for under $400.
Other points: I find the built in microphones in these cameras to be very good - as good as any in a camera in that price range. Downloading (the AVI / QT .mov) files can be done with a simple card reader or with the connect-to-camera USB cable supplied with the Canon camera. I use a card reader - just on the thought that having the camera on while downloading drains the batteries a bit.
The Canon downloader software works fine with Macs - but I use Adobe Bridge because it gives more options for naming files, etc. I would NOT recommend GraphicConverter for downloading / organizing video: it handles digital photos okay but sometimes just "screws up" video files for no apparent reason. Some people now like Picasa for Mac - but I haven't used it much so I can't say myself.
I go with the others responding here when it comes to editing: iMovie HD seems to be the last gasp from Apple when it comes to low-cost (but practical) movie editing.
I did like iMovie 09 - mainly for the "jiggle remover." But the little update (to 8.0.5) really messed up iMovie 09 for me and quite a few other people.

Airplay is a wireless streaming protocol. It allows content to be pushed from the iPad through the Apple TV onto your connected HDTV.

Instead of iSight,,,, what is the best camcorder compatible for mac and transfering video to powerbook G4 and PPC G5 Quad and for use with youtube and or CitizenTube.... ?
I have a Canon SD 500 this should be enough because only can down load a max of 10mb to youtube. But I cannot use as a webcam to pass straight to computer which is fine,. Any Suggestions???

I use this Logitech USB Desktop Microphone for my iMovie voice-over, GarageBand podcasting, and other general purpose voice work. It works well for that, but it is obviously not a professional music quality mic.

The simplest way to connect a mic to your G5 is via USB. That simplicity, adequate sound quality, and low price are the main reasons I chose my Logitech.

If there are, I would suggest you stay with analog microphones. I may be wrong, but from this Google search for digital microphones, it seems to me that digital microphones are largely subjects of engineering studies at this time. You might find a microphone pre-amp that takes analog microphone inputs but provides a digital output signal you could connect to your Mac's digital input if you really want or need to use your digital in port.

Decide on an acquisition format by determining what you expect to do with the movies you create. You may not need full 1080 but can get by with 720. Resist cameras that record in a codec that must be transcoded before editing.

Sorry but what is the definition of "inline" videos, I wanna be really sure (i'm not english / in my language my videos are "inline" videos: videos put inside the document).)
On some apps I made, some videos work, some don't. And
one of the main issues are
- they launch full screen when they're not supposed to (i want them to launch in a definite area)
- they dont launch full screen when they're supposed to (when they're suppposed to play in full screen, they just do not appear: black screen)

Best Method for converting a 16x9 video to a letterboxed 4x3 DVD

I'm not quite sure what would be the best method for this. My client is using a 4x3 screen and SD projector at a large meeting, and they want me to just create a DVD that is letterboxed. I have one Premiere CS5 project that's 1920x1080, and another project that's 720x480 widescreen (1.2). I created a new sequence in both projects that is 720x480, 4x3 (0.9), and what I do is just scale the timeline down so that it's letterboxed. Is this the best method for achieving this? Or would you do something else? I don't like the idea of scaling my timeline down in Premiere.

As Jim so rightly points out above, you do not need to do anything.
Just use your normal 16:9 widescreen footage, and author as normal.
Your player will letterbox automatically when it is connected to a 4:3 screen in setup (just make sure "Pan & Scan" is not also there)

You really need to determine what the priorities are. For example, scanning slides is not something you're going to be able to do with a multifunction printer.
It might be to your benefit to cost out dedicated printers and scanner. Then you don't need to compromise one thing for an other.

What's the best camcorder for taking video to edit in final cut express?

I had a sony, but the file type was MTS and it required conversion to edit in Final Cut Express 3. So i sold it on ebay, and I'm looking to replace it. Does anyone have a set up that is easy to transfer HD video from their camera to their Mac, and edit those files right in Final Cut 3?

Not sure this is "rubbish" as you say Tom. FCE 4 has to take files directly from the camera. Works fine when I have the files I want to work with on the camera, does not work fine when I saved them to my hard drive, and want to import them later.
In case you don't believe my personal experience, here's another souce that has had the same conslusion:
"Incidentally, Final Cut Express will not transcode the native .MTS files directly; it needs to take the footage from the camcorder. However, a $30 utility called Voltaic can do the job outside Final Cut Express; it works on PowerPC Macs, too."

To Mr. Fore, I believe you are correct, it works fine to pull right from the camera, no issue there. Issue comes in when I just want to dump video to my local hard drive and clean out the camera's hard drive so I can keep shooting, and come back at a later date to edit and clean up the old footage. I end up having to import everything from the camera to Final Cut Express 4, which is time consuming, rather than just drop the files on to my hard drive.
What I would like to know, is there a camcorder out there that saves files in a format that I can drop on my local hard drive, and then pull into FCE later. I would love to hear from someone who has done that, what camera they are using.

Sadly I bought a Sony DCR SR85 60GB HDD Camcorder because my videographer friends told me not to buy anything but a Sony.
I was astounded to find out that I was unable to record directly onto iMovie. Oh well. Further iMovie has to convert the file after it is downloaded from the camera's HD. I'm disappointed. It's on eBay now.

You can do that with any FireWire camcorder - well, certainly in iMovie HD 6 and previous ..I haven't tested that in iMovie '08.
Sony aren't really in direct competition with Apple, as Apple don't make camcorders ..and you may remember that the head honcho from Sony burst onto the stage during SJ's MacWorld address the other year (2005..?) and was introduced by Steve as he announced iMovie HD, because Sony was overwhelming happy that iMovie could import hi-def material from Sony's new hi-def Z1 and FX1 cameras. Apple and Sony worked together to ensure that iMovie could handle hi-def video shot with Sony camcorders.
But perhaps I'm not the best person to respond here, as I don't think much of hard disc camcorders; the compression's higher than with miniDV tape, a head crash can mean that you lose your entire discful of video, it's often more finicky to import ..the only time I use a hard disc for recording video is if I use a 'FireStore' piggy-backed onto a miniDV camcorder.
A computer with a spinning hard disc inside is a fragile thing to use as a monitor, if your rig has to be moved: it's only sensible if you're in one fixed spot while you're recording. If I'm shooting with the camcorder on the end of a pole, I just run a video-out cable from the camera to a mini monitor (..or even to video glasses!..) so that I can see what I'm shooting with the remote camera: drop your Mac and you're really in trouble!
To use your Mac as a monitor, you should also first calibrate the Mac's screen so that its colours and brightness ("gamma") match that of the camcorder, otherwise you might adjust the camera to match what you see on the Mac, and end up with over-exposure, or the wrong colours.
So maybe you might rethink why you want to use your Mac as a monitor. And continuous capture to a Mac's internal disc while shooting may put too much strain on the system (..as the Mac will want to do various 'housekeeping' jobs while the video's coming in, such as indexing files, swapping memory to and from disc, etc). It may be better to capture to an external disc ..which Canons don't like to do: they like to be the only FireWire device in the circuit. But as you want to capture to a hard disc camcorder, maybe capture straight onto the Mac isn't what you have in mind.
So, all in all, why not think again about what exactly you want to do, and why. And Sonys work perfectly well with Macs, in my experience..
P.S: Any hi-def camcorder will need to have its video 'converted' during import into iMovie, as hi-def video is severely 'compressed' into a non-editable format, and it has to be uncompressed during import so that it can be edited. That's not just Sony camcorders; that's every type of hi-def. The conversion takes a lot of 'horse-power' during import, so shooting hi-def and simultaneously importing it in real time into iMovie can be difficult.

Best camcorder for a beginner

We want to take pictures of trips, my husband's grandkids and just general things. I would then like to be able to save them, play on the TV (or computer). AND maybe down the line use them in imovie. But mostly just save them. I don't know what the firewire is and if that is just need to download to the computer????? I do have some great advice as to looking into a minidv camcorder with dv in and out or a dvd camocorder format. Are there any particular brands best?

If your main concern was taking picture and create slide show and burn it on cd / dvd to play to your tv or computer, then you don't need to buy a camcorder.
just use your sony digital camera, download the file to iPhoto, and use iMovie and or iDVD to create slide show.
But if you want to capture video and want to edit and burn it into dvd, then you have to consider a camcorder.
For now, only camcorder that comes with firewire port or iLink or ieee1394 (all the same with different name) that will be able to communicate with iMovie and final cut.
And mostly that available on camcorder that use mini DV as storage media.
Do compare yourself for the brand , price range and ease of use. I prefer Sony, Canon, Panasonic and JVC as brand to consider.
And you might need to buy the firewire cable yourself since it ussualy doesn't come with the camera accessories. Just ask for firewire cable 6 pin to 4 pin at the electronic or computer store.

I just want to know what everyone's opinions are on the best Camcorders that are out there for the Mac. Here are some of the attributes that I would rank from most important to the least.

- Most Bang for your Buck (image quality)
- Ease of use with video editing programs. (Starting with iMovie, will probably migrate to final cut express)

Hi, I'm on the lookout too. Contrary to what Zak Ray said, I already have a Sony MicroMV (tape based) camera and it doesnt work with the Mac at all (neither does my Cybershot DSC-T1 camera). Hmm, no more Sony products for me.
I've been looking at the Panasonic HDC-SD1 as recommended in Steve Jobs keynote and it looks like a fine camcorder. I was wondering if anyone has been able to play with one of these yet as I really don't want any compatibility issues again. I just want to connect it to the mac, drag the video over and begin editing. I'll probably just use iMovie'08 really although I've not had a play with it yet.
Equally happy to hear recommendations on this or other camcorders before I take the plunge...

Best practice for viewing short home videos on AppleTV?

Please help me find a simple way to view short home videos taken on a digital video camera, photo camera or cell phone on my Apple TV.
I've been using AppleTV to showcase my photos for a couple months now, but all the short little videos I take along the way have been gathering dust in a general folder. None of them are significant enough to warrant building a full on iMovie, and all are in Nikon's AVI format. To date I have about 300 of them, hoping that one day they won't just gather dust.
As I understand it these are the recommended steps that Apple encourages:
1) Import movies from camera onto hard disk (Aperture prompts me to do this when I import photos)
2) Import all movies into iMovie
3) Export for AppleTV (creating new projects for each video, individually!)
4) Import into iTunes
5) Sync with AppleTV
This is awful. For comparison, here is my current workflow for photos to get them to show on AppleTV...
1) Import photos into Aperture.
Assuming iTunes is already running (and it mostly is), there's not even a step two. iTunes is set up to sync a "Recent Import" smart album from Aperture to AppleTV so everything else is behind the scenes. A few seconds after importing I'm viewing new photos on my AppleTV.
Since AppleTV is actually built for video, I'm hoping for a revised workflow that can showcase my movies as quickly as it does photos.
I'm currently not running a hacked version of the AppleTV OS, but would consider it if it simplifies the process. Automator workflows, Finder Folder Actions, and AppleScripts are also fair game.

Thanks pvonk. I get that video is more complex than photos, but Apple still wrote its photo applications to accept all sorts of photo file types (even the many proprietary RAW formats). So I don't think it's crazy to question why this workflow isn't easier for video. Especially when Apple is the biggest champion of integrated video solutions.
Right now, here's my best guess at a workable solution. Care to weigh in?
Setup:
1) Attach a folder action to a folder (let's say ~/Movies/Imported/)
2) Folder-Action runs shell script that converts videos to mp4 via HandBrake's command line tool
3) Shell script triggers another folder action upon HandBrake completion to pushes the completed file to a new folder (let's say ~/Movies/Converted/)
4) "Converted" folder action to import to iTunes (perhaps Applescript? Automator?)
~ if one could automatically add a meta tag (let's say "AppleTV") they could be added to a smart album on iTunes that is set up to sync with AppleTV
*Workflow after Setup:*
1) Import all movies to a folder (~/Movies/Imported/)
Does this sound about right? My shell scripting skills are less than adequate for this, so if there is a way to accomplish this with AppleScript, that'd be ideal.
Any other suggestions to simplify the workflow? The setup here still seems overly complex for a normal user. I can't imagine the folks at Apple really excited about the hurdles involved in this either, so I hope that they're working out a solution already.
