Best Clean Install Strategy?
I'm about to install SL on my Mac Pro (3 GHZ, 2006 vintage). I have been unhappy with some basic performance elements of my MP for a long time and I think it needs a clean install. So, will I have to manually install all applications that I want to keep? I think that there are some apps like Timbuktu that I don't want to install at this time and other apps that might be causing a slow down due to supporting hidden processes. So, thoughts about this? I guess I need to reinstall or manually drag some things over as needed. But, I don't want to needlessly add hours or days to this upgrade and not have anything to show for it. I also plan to install on SL on my MBP (early 2008 vintage) and my Mac Mini (new model).
Thanks,
Robert
Hi, I had the same thoughts and did the following:
1. If you have MobileMe, sync up your mail accounts, bookmarks, contacts, keychain, calendar, etc.
2. Use carbon copy cloner to backup entire partition to an external drive (you can backup to an image file on another partition or external drive as well).
3. Start your computer from the Mac OS X install DVD by holding down the C key at power on.
4. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and erase or re-partition your partition/drive.
5. Install OS X 10.6 from scratch using custom install to eliminate any language files or printer drivers you don't need.
6. Sync with MobileMe, configure OS settings, copy your static data such as photos, music, etc. back onto to your new drive (you can even copy the Mail and Mail Downloads folder in your /user/Library/Preferences folder straight over to your new install and Apple mail will pick up exactly where it left off.
7. Re-install your major applications from the original media, and for smaller apps copy preferences and the application files over to 10.6 from your backup.
Depending on how much stuff you have on your computer and how many applications you regularly use, you can be back up to speed in a day or so.
Good luck!

Simple protocol for clean install of lion
I have an older macbook (2007) that has started to do some funny things … including a fairly well documented problem that, to my knowledge, has no real solution short of a clean install. Even the local mac store recommended that I reinstall Lion if the problem persists. Well, the problem has persisted and I have a few other odd and annoying things that happen intermittently.
My computer is backed up with both Time Machine and cloned with CCC on separate external HDs. I also made a bootable install disc of Lion on an 8GB flash drive when I originally purchased and downloaded it. However, I am unsure about what the best clean install protocol should be. I want to (1) preserve my files and (2) minimize the amount of time/effort required to get my computer back up and running like it should. So, I was hoping someone could help me out by listing a simple recommended protocol for this situation as well as the important files/folders that I should preserve from my backups after wiping the drive clean and reinstalling Lion in order to essentially have my computer running like it was, minus the corruptions in the OS.First off, thanks to all for the quick responses. I really appreciate the input.
Ok, here's what it looks like I can do:
1. erase and install, either by booting into my recovery partition or from the Lion install disc I previously made on an 8GB usb drive. Then ...
2. restore data from my backup.
So, Time Machine will not overwrite the new system files when it restores my 'user' data, and the restored data should include all of my settings and preferences? Bookmarks for my browser? Keychain passwords? I only ask because I'd like to be prepared before diving in. I think I'm ready to give it a shot.
@Linc: I really appreciate your point of view. I purposely did not discuss the major problem I'm having because I didn't want to distract from the simple question I had with a complex problem. Since you asked, here goes: when I wake my mac from sleep, sometimes I lose my wireless network connection and sometimes I don't. If my connection is dropped, sometimes I can reconnect by manually selecting my network and other times when I manually select it, I cannot reconnect even if I enter the correct password. If this happens, I am forced to sleep the computer and wake it, which starts the whole process over again. If it does not reconnect to the network this time, I am forced to restart the computer if I want the network connection. Not good. Gets old quick. I have had this problem since Snow Leopard - hoped installing Lion would fix it. I have searched and read many discussion here and elsewhere regarding this problem and tried many solutions that have worked for some people and not others. None have worked for me. The only constant seems to be a clean install, which sees to work for most. I spent hours at the Apple Store. They even gave me a brand new Airport Extreme for free because they couldn't isolate and fix the problem, in hopes that might do the trick. Nope. In my opinion, I have spent way more hours than it is worth to fix this problem trying to avoid a clean install. Certainly, I don't know if it will work until I do it, but I'm at the point where I feel like it is worth a try. So, if you have the solution I've been waiting for, please send it along … I'm the kind of person who would much rather figure out and fix a specific problem (with some help) than throw in the towel. -
After finally completing a clean install what is the BEST way to replace my data.
Please understand I moved from PC to Mac in Late 2011. Unlike windows where you have to know how it all works to use it, Mac is so simple I, to my own detriment , did not take the time to learn more than just my daily use. Been busy moving country and other crazy life stuff. I am rectifying this mistake. I did have issue with the clean install process working through with out interruption, some file issue, so had to repeat a few times.
1. completed a clean install through to completion of set up, new account etc. Machine runs amazingly better. Completed updates. Knowing Migration Assistant can deal with duplicate user issues.
Q? Do I need to run disk repair or other.
2. Thought myself ill equipped with knowledge and understanding to manually replace my data via finder. I simply do not know where things are supposed to go.
3. Tried reinstall of everything thru set up but it installed everything including all the issues I had before. Went through clean install process again.
4. With this in mind I am hesitant and very weary to use Migration Assistant to move everything back as I simply do Not know where the issue lies even if it allowed greater folder & file separation.
I have got to the stage where I am ready to recover my data which is on my backup external hard drive. The data was recovered using Time Machine.
I wish to do what is best for my machine. It is getting older and I wish to do what I can for its longevity.
Q? So what data is best recovered in which way and in what order.
5. Is it best to say do recover applications from App Store and redo all updates if required.
Then install non app store apps, e.g. Microsoft office for mac, and others thru finder.
Users thru Migration assistant etc etc.
Been learning and working on this since my last post. Lots of watching YouTube and reading for hours.
So much conflicting opinions and maybe this is due to my lack of specifics and most posts are for general use so I do understand.
Again thank you in advance. I still think Mac has it all over PC.I read thru the data migration one below however wasn't sure of its applicability given it was from 09.
Re: 2. there seems to be data I have yet to bring across. How important it is I don't know. What exactly it is I also am yet to find out. Will proceed with the downloading n stuff.
Thank you for your help on this. -
What is the best way to do a clean install
What is the best way to do a clean install? I bought a new iMac and I am giving my old one to my wife. She has an older iMac. I backed up her computer using Time Capsule and just want to wipe out my old computer and hook up the external drive and import all her data straight over.
Joe McGarryYou may just restart your old computer right after/on the startsound press "cmd and r" this shuld get you to recoverymode. Here you can start up disk utilitys, chose your mac HD and press erase. After this close disk utilitys and install OS (you may connect the time capsul already and it will import with the install)

Best way to do a clean install of XP over Vista on x200s
Hi,
Just got an x200s with Vista installed. I would love to do a clean install of XP. I've noticed 2 other partitions. Lenovo describes them as ->
C: is your available file storage space.
S: holds critical start up (booting) information.
Q: contains the critical data needed for system recovery.
Okay. So if I want to do a clean install of XP on my system, are either S or Q needed if I never use Vista again? And what would be the best/safest way to install XP on my machine? I don't want to delete anything that cannot be replaced or is vital to functioning of the machine under XP.
Thanks!ajdedo wrote:

im not too sure about "S" but "Q" wont be needed anymore if u dont intend to use Vista anymore. "Q" will restore your system to Vista state if you perform recovery. before you start, remember to backup all the stuff u need. If you have a XP disc, just insert it into the drive (make sure your boot sequence is set to detect optical drive 1st) and perform a format on C drive. avoid using the quick format. after formatting it, just follow the instruction on screen and install XP. i doubt there are any safe method to install XP. pretty straight forward thing.

Best way to clean install mountain lion on a new ssd
Am in the process of upgrading my late 2008 MacBook Pro (15"). Have had 8 GB RAM installed for over a year now, as well as Lion, and it's doing fine but want to upgrade it some more to get another couple years out of it. Have ordered a 120 GB SSD and will be installing it in place of the optical drive to speed up boot and programs access. Also would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion IF it'll upgrade performance and add worthwhile features. Assuming that's the case, is it best to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on the new SSD or just clone the existing hard drive? What's the best technique for doing a clean install and for cloning?
Go to the App Store. Sign in with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Mountain Lion. It's over 4 GBs so it will take some time to download.
When it finishes the installer will launch automatically and present you with a window for installing. I suggest you quit the installer at this point. Follow these instructions:
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
the process has completed.
d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
drive size.
3. Use Lion DiskMaker 2.0 to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
You can then install your SSD. Boot the computer from the Mountain Lion USB flash drive to install onto the SSD after you partition and format the SSD:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot from Mountain Lion USB flash drive installer. When the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
Boot Using OPTION key:
a. Restart the computer.
b. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"OPTION" key.
c. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
d. Select the USB Flash Drive Installer.
e. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. When formatting is complete quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Install/Reinstall Mountain Lion and click on the Continue/Install button. -
Upgrading to SSD, what is the best way to clean install and transfer my files over?
I am upgrading to an SSD and I would like to start clean by doing a fresh installation of Yosemite on the new drive. However, I still want all of my personal files from my current hard drive, like my music, music libraries, photos, and Home folder, transferred over to the new drive. What is the best way of doing this?
I have Time Machine and a Time Capsule. Could I simply restore a Time Machine backup, or will that defeat the purpose of doing a clean install?
Should I just back up the home folder and transfer the home folder onto an external drive, then drag the home folder to my new drive? Will that save my iTunes playlists and music?
I don't need to transfer apps over so I'm not worried about that. Just my documents, files, pictures, music. How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
Boot From a Recovery HD:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.
After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and later.)
For Lion or later select Disk Utility from the Utilities Main Menu.
After Disk Utility loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the Disk Utility status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If Disk Utility reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the Recovery HD on the external drive, then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utility Main Menu, then click on the Continue button.
2. After Disk Utility loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the Disk Utility main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition/Apply button and
wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
3. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer. -
The best way to back up if making a clean install
Hi
I upgraded to Leopard, but it is not running very smooth, so I'm thinking about doing a clean install. I can't shake the thought each time something is laggy on my screen that maybe this could be better if I did a clean install you know? Anyway which way is the best to take a back-up on my external HD: Copy my home folder (containing all the bookmarks, iCal appointments and so on) or make a clone with SuperDuper? How will it work if I make a clone? I mean with bookmarks and iCal appointments, Mail set-up and so on.
If I don't clone my system and and just export my bookmarks and all the other things I need, how do I then export my iPhoto library so that I'm able to keep my albums?
ThanksHello Rune.
There are some points to consider when backing up.
The amount of data to be transferred. The specifications of the external hard drive, is it USB, Firewire, capacity? etc.
If you're after the fastest, cheapest, and most direct way of backing up, simply copy over your User's folder unto the external hard drive. If you have more than one, then do so with the other folders.
If you're willing to spend some time learning about SuperDuper, try this link:
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
SuperDuper is free, and the full version which is not, enables other options such as scheduling, scripting etc...
However, if you don't feel that you really need a lot of stuff, these are some of the most common folders you may want to back up.
iTunes music
path: Macintosh Hard Drive *or whatever you may have named your hard drive* -> Users -> *your profile name here* -> Music -> iTunes Library.
Copy the whole contents.
iPhoto
path: Macintosh Hard Drive -> Users -> Your profile -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library.
Copy over the whole contents.
Safari Bookmarks
path: Macintosh Hard Drive -> Users -> Your profile -> Library -> Safari -> bookmarks.plist
Copy the file.
Mail Messages
path: Macintosh Hard Drive -> Users -> Your profile -> Library -> Mail
Copy the whole folder
Address Book
Open Address Book and simply create a back up of your contacts.
Your Downloads folder is by default on your desktop or wherever you have Safari set it to download.
The files you have downloaded through Mail are located in:
Macintosh HD -> Users -> Your profil -> Library -> Mail Downloads by default.
Applications or 3rd party applications (software that did not come with the machine), may be backed up but are not guaranteed to work depending on compatibility issues. Especially if they are not bundled apps (Apps which do not install into multiple directories i.e. Microsoft Office for Mac 2004) Bundled apps are programs which work wherever you copy the installer. i.e. Firefox.
Hope this helps.
These are some of the things that I would back up. -
How to best migrate userdata to new machine with clean install
We currently run OS X Server 10.4 on a G4. It's about to give up the ghost, so we want to migrate/move the server to a G5. We could clone the drive, however, I think a clean install would be best to clear out any oddities that may have played a part in the servers demise.
Is it possible to do a clean install OS X server from onto a blank hard drive, i.e. not an upgrade install. And then migrate the importatn user data, passwords and other important settings etc?
Or will I have to recreate all users, passwords, shares etc?
Thanks in advance for any tips.
Greg MontgomeryHi
Is it possible to do a clean install OS X server from onto
a blank hard drive, i.e. not an upgrade install. And then migrate
the importatn user data, passwords and other important settings etc?
Yes. Passwords don’t transfer over however. Its simple enough to force everyone to change their passwords at next login using Password Policies. If your user base is not that large you could always key them in.
On the old server unshare any share points first before copying over. I personally like to create a new enclosing (top-level) share point that is named the same on the new server and then copy over the folders/files within. Propagate permissions from there. If the shares are on a RAID or an external device then just unshare them and re-attach to the new server and proceed from there. Although not necessary its a good idea to restart the server after doing this especially if the volumes have also been ACL enabled which you should disable first.
Exporting and Importing Users and Groups from WGM is simple enough.
In Server Admin above the settings button for each service configured is the property list icon. You can drag this to the desktop or a memory stick and use these property lists to re-configure the new server. If you suspect that any oddities on the old server are down to a suspect service then don’t bother and re-do the service from scratch. If you are using internal DNS Services then I would also advise to redo this from scratch unless you are absolutely certain that there was nothing wrong with the service on the old server. The only plist that I would advise not to transfer over would be Open Directory if its anything other than Standalone. You can transfer over and re-locate the LDAP database if it is an OD Master but again if you suspect your original oddities stem from there then don’t bother. In my view unless you have absolutely never had a problem and you are not changing anything I would always start from Standalone and promote from there.

One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.
The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!? BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?

Lenovo Helix - Clean Install of Windows 8.1 - Best way to load Software and Drivers
I am considering doing a clean install of the Windows 8.1 operating system on my Lenovo Helix. What I am wondering is if (After I install the operating system) there is an easy way to get all teh lenovo drivers and software loaded without having to download/install each of them one at a time?
If not, is there a specific set or order from which they should be installed?
Is there anything I would lose by doing a clean install of 8.1?
Thanks....davidbecht wrote:
Sarbin,
I only have one device issue that has popped up. My keyboard has begun to work somewhat wonky. Sometimes if I am in tablet mode then switch to keyboard mode the keyboard doesn't respond. It will only respond after several reboots/shutdowns. Is there a good way to make Lenovo System Update reinstall the keyboard drivers? If you have any advice on fixing this issue that would be great.
I also thought I was going to lose all teh Lenovo specific apps when I did a clean install. I didn't. The only one I don't see is one which was called "Lenovo Experience". It was nice but if that is all I lost then I am ok with it.
I love this computer. Now it feels like new again....
You're welcome.
Some things I prefer to install manually, outside of TVSU. BIOS and firmware are good examples. Have a look through the driver listing for the keyboard/dock update and scan the readme. The behavior you're seeing may be part of that fix.
Looking at one of my Win8 OEM-preload machines, the Lenovo Experience shortcut points at "dxpserver.exe". Maybe that info will help pinpoint if there's an installer for the complete package.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Best way to do a clean install of SB drivers
The patient=A new, out of the retail box, Audigy Platinum Card with the Front Panel Dri've? Using it in an older P4 PC I built several years ago as a temporary until I build a new box.
Some of the symptoms-Since loading the Dolby Digital Li've Pack it has been slowly deteriorating in performance. Overall sound not as good as when first loaded. ?Some features have decided to quit working. This includes the headphone jack in the Dri've.
Reloaded the drivers several times, No improvement.
Found on the forum a more technical end user had put together his own install for the drivers and applications. Tried it. Worked really well. Some features returned. The card at least sees the headphone is plugged in now. But still not working. Sound in speakers?greatly overall improved.
I would like to try a "clean install" of the card drivers. Have seen numerous suggestions for doing this.
I am thinking of () disabling the card in the device manager (2) manually removing the drivers getting the list from the properties of the driver (3) re-installing all.
Maybe the headphone and all else will work then. Otherwise, I'll get my golden helmet, a lance,?a sword, ?a horse and attack the nearest windmill! Thanks ViSt--
I took a quick look. The method applies to Vista. I am running an older box with XP Home on it. Still, there are some pretty decent suggestions in there.
On the other hand, getting back to the earlierr suggestion. I tried it and it worked. I never found the CRFxxx folder but did find the interface to remove the drivers in the extracted version of the?Audigy Support Pack. At least the headphones lit right up. ?On the otherhand, I used the Creative Audio Console. As soon as I checked the enhance 3-d effects for the headphones the headphone jack died again. It intermittantly headphone detection still works but no sound. -
Best way to clean install Lion?
Right, i've posted a lot today, but i'm hoping this should be the last time:
There's two ways of clean installing Lion (that i've seen), which one is better?:
1. Putting the install.dmg onto a sd card/memory stick, holding alt whilst restarting, booting from that memory stick,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irgiVzBwaos
2. Starting in Lion, going into recovery mode and using that disk utility to erase hard drive and then to re-install Lion,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsDRCSipDHI
Thank you very much.It really is difficult to say, the USB Flash drive is slower, but the master boot block for the recovery partition may be damaged. Your mileage may vary depending on the health of each.

According to Apple, I have a corrupt Leopard install and I need to back up my Mac and clean install Leopard again. I had originally intended to use Time Machine for my back ups, but since I also have a Airport Extreme, I wanted to use a HD connected to this for my back ups. Unfortunately, this won't work; the HD must be connected directly to the APE.
So, I am looking for the best back up strategy that will -
1) Let me back up all my info to a external drive, so I will have everything I need to get my Mac back in the same shape it was after I reinstall Leopard, i.e. everything on it, including mail, itunes, photos, etc. I can connect directly to a drive for this part.
2) After this, I want to back up 2 Mac Book Pros regularly to the external drive connected to the Air Port Extreme. I would like to be able to access this back up in a native format, i.e., find a file and open it from the back up without having to restore it or any other gymnastics. I don't know if Time Machine is the best solution; looking for suggestions.
Is this possible?
Thanks for your help!Hi,
1. Get the biggest external drive you can afford. You cant have enough storage space.
2. Use Carbon Copy Cloner from here...
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
That will clone the entire content of your computer on to the external.
3. Time Machine won't work in this scenario. As I understand it, Wireless back ups were removed from the list of goodies in Leopard at the last moment. It may become available in later releases of Leopard. It may not.

Clean Install / Cloning to an second internal drive?
My boot drive is full and now seems slower - is it file fragmentation which slows a full drive?
Here's my set up - I've just added a second internal 1TB drive and want to clean install the original boot drive (350gb) which is almost full and seems to have slowed down. - What is the best way to do this?
Can i clone to a second internal drive?
Can i clone drive 1 onto drive 2 then clean install drive 1?
I want to keep a back up of system set up, software preferences etc.. so nothing goes wrong
Can i then use Migration Assistant to get everything back in place on drive 1 (software preferences etc..)
Then drop the folders in from drive 2 into 1 - then erase drive 2 to start fresh
(I'm running OS 10.5.8)
Thanks for any helpHi
Yes you can use it as a regular drive. Store Data or even install the OS.
RAID 0 = Stripe. As an example 2x1TB drives striped will give you a single volume 2TB in capacity or thereabouts. RAID 0 gives you capacity and performance with no redundancy. If one of the drives fails you lose everything. Data is 'striped' across both drives. One drive does not get 'filled' up first before data is stored on the second drive.
It's important therefore with a RAID Stripe to have a clear and well-thought out backup strategy if you want to protect your data.
RAID 1 = Mirror. As an example 2x1TB mirrored would give you a single volume 1TB or thereabouts in size. RAID 1 gives you redundancy at the cost of capacity and performance. If the primary mirror fails the data is still on the secondary mirror allowing you time to replace the failed mirror. Data would then be 'mirrored/copied' again onto the replacement drive. Depending how much data you have this can take some time. Performance does suffer whilst this happening.
Depending on your hardware and how far you want to take this there is a whole world of RAID waiting for you to explore. If you had a MacPro for example you could use 4x1TB drives and have a RAID 10. A Mirror of a Stripe or - if you like - a Stripe of a Mirror. Either way you end up with a 2TB Volume giving you some measure of performance with redundancy. Beyond what's available built-in you're really looking at hardware RAID solutions. These can offer RAID 5 and RAID 6 with variations thereof. For example RAID 5 with hot spare etc or RAID 3 or even RAID 50 and so on.
The 'general rule' leaving 10% free if anything should be expanded to 15% if you're considering RAID. Performance degrades alarmingly once you get beyond that figure even more than un-RAIDed volumes.
HTH?
