Best codec for exporting photo slideshow?

I brought some H.264 640x480 30fps 4:3 slideshow clips created by iPhoto '08 into FCP 5.1.4 to string together and added some titles. My goal is to export some sort of output file that I can then convert to some other Windows formats I can't do from within the standard Quicktime Conversion dialog. What codec should I use for export that will minimize the re-compression of the original H.264 footage? It's about 15 minutes long. I have a good deal of disk space, but perhaps not enough space (or time) to export it uncompressed?

Photo - jpeg at 75% assuming you will use QT in Windows.

Whats the best codec for exporting animations (hopefully using loseless compression) that will retain alpha channel, and use the current sequence settings for fps and size?
Currently Im exporting image sequences, but I'd prefer a wrapper.. I don't know much about the 'Animation' export codec.. I did notice that set to current size had some funky value of 753x450 or something.. instead of my current project size of 1920x1080...

PNG should do it. I think PNG is lossless (that's what they say, anyway). But realistically, if you use PNG, Animation, or JPG2000 set on highest quality, I'd dare you to tell a difference.
I use PNG because it's supposedly lossless, renders twice as fast as Animation in a FCP timeline, and is usually about half the size.
If you use "Export Using Quicktime Conversion", you will need to check all of the settings manually to make sure they match your sequence settings. This is always true, no matter what codec you use.
If that sounds risky, your other option is to go into your sequence settings and change the codec to the one you want to render to (this will probably turn your whole timeline red), and then choose Export -> Quicktime movie.

Best codec for export from FCE?

Heya, I'm sort of a newbie, so please be patient with me
I'm trying to export a video from FCE using QT conversion. I'm going to be putting it on Youtube. What is the best codec for export? I've always heard that H.264 is the 'best', but my videos have always been pale and washed out. I tried exporting using MPEG-4 video, and it's not washed out. Is H.264 better and I should just deal with the paleness, or does it not matter too much?

All the Web video sites re-compress your videos. So it's generally best to upload high quality files – typically determined by bit rate.
My suggestion would be to export as a Quick Time movie at current settings. (Guessing that you edited an AIC sequence,)
If you don;t have MPEG Streamclip, do a search and download it. In Streamclip, open the file you exported from FCE. Export to Quick Time. For Compression, choose H.264 from the drop down menu. Don't change Frame Size. If your movie is interlaced, check De-interlace. Check the Limit Data Rate box and type in 12,000 if the size of your movie is1080; 6,000 if your movie is 720; 3,000 if your movie is 480.
Use the YT uploader and you should be good to go.

Hey everyone. I have an uncompressed 200 gigabyte movie in Premiere Pro CS3. I was wondering, what is the best way to export the movie to MPEG-2 DVD so that it will fit on a 9 gigabyte dual layer dvd with the least amount of quality loss? Thanks.

Two things to add to Ruud's recommendations. DVD+R disks, both single and dual layer, have something known as Booktype. It's basically a code on the burned disk that tells players what kind of disk it is. DVD-R disks have this information hard coded, but for +R disks, it happens during the burning process. The point here is that because it's user written, it can be changed.
The reason you might want to change the Booktype is that DVD+R DL disks have probably the lowest player compatibility of all burnable media out there. I've had computer drives that couldn't read these disks. The solution is to change the Booktype from +R to DVD-ROM. It's not a real ROM disk, of course, but the code fools the player into thinking it is, and so vastly increases the number of players such disks will play well on.
Make sure you burner will allow the DVD-ROM setting for DVD+R DL disks. Some do it by default, some you have to change once and you're good, some you have to change every time you reboot. Nero's free tool DiskSpeed has a way to check what the Booktype of your disks will be after they're burned.
The second recommendation is Falcon disks. They're available in the US only from Diskmakers, but in my experience they turn out with fewer errors than the pressed disks Hollywood makes.

Best codec for exporting in AVI format

I've been using Adobe Premiere CS3 for the last couple of months and am nearing completion of a video I'm making. I intend to export my finished work as an AVI file and have been experimenting with different codecs by exporting short clips and then watching them with VLC player. So far I haven't had much luck. I've tried the following codecs:
DivX Mpeg-4 Fast Motion
DivX Mpeg-4 Low Motion
Xvid Mpeg-4
When I try to use the Xvid codec, a new window with 'XVid status' comes up and then Premiere freezes. With the DivX codecs, the video quality is bad and the picture goes all 'fuzzy', especially during transitions...
Does anybody have any suggestions?

I can only refer to PrPro 2.0, but I can Export directly to DivX on my laptop, which does not have the DivX stand-alone encoder.
This is done from Microsoft AVI, and not DV-AVI.

Need help in choosing best codec for exporting HD for content delivery

What codec is best for a quick but manageable size for an HD video for Youtube?
And, what codec is best for that same video to be exported for DVDSP?
I am thinking for DVDSP I would just export as QT and I can go straight to DVDSP and burn from there.
But when I have tried to export for YouTube I have had problems using QT with conversion, so suggestions are gladly accepted.

Good advice for the SD DVD, so for the ftp upload, in Compressor, choose Quicktime > H.264 - which does a very good job of maintaining quality while reducing the size of the file dramatically. Once you drag the preset for H.264 to the file in the Compressor job, you can make adjustments to the setting by changing the frame size and or quality and even choose between stereo or mono and what sample rate. So I recommend reducing a 1920x1080 to a 1280 x 720 resolution, and changing the audio sample rate from 48k to 44.1k (unless you're already there). youtube, Vimeo, and other hosts of HD content usualy accept a 1280 x 720 clip and further encode the uploaded file to their own thing - usually flash and the settings I've given you have worked well for me on Vimeo.

Best codec for export?

I've always worked on short videos, less than 15 minutes, and could always export as a .mov and burn to a DVD-R. Now I am working on something that will be 40+ minutes long and know it will not fit on a standard 4.7GB DVD without compression. How, and with what settings should I export this video so I can still burn it to a 4.7GB DVD? Obviously I want to maintain the best quality I can and there seems to be 40 or choices plus options.

While we commonly refer to anything that can be burned on a 4.7GB DVD disk as a DVD, DVD's can be either a Data disk or a Digital Video Disk (DVD).
If you want a Digital Video Disk (something that will play in set top players), export your movie from FCP and import it into compressor. In there, select (under the DVD presets) 90 min best quality + ac3 audio. Drag those into DVDSP, build your chapter structure and burn a happy disk.
If you want a DATA disk, you need to keep the total file size under 4.5 GB, or if it is larger than that, get a Dual layer DVD disk which will give you slightly less the 9 GB of space. (and you must have a drive capable of burning dual layer disks)
fwiw - Toast 9 or higher will allow you to span disks - that is to write one data file over multiple disks. This is good for transport, but impossible to play from the disk.

what is the best setting for exporting a slideshow from iPhoto '09?
I'll be burning it with iDVD and it will be watched on a large flat screen TV.
I WAS GOING TO USE THE .MOV option with the default settings but should I use the DV settings?

Honestly there is no answer for that until you do it. A mov will work perfectly fine. But there are variables: The quality and sharpness of the original photos. How they survive being compressed to a mov, how that mov survives being compressed to DVD format. The quality of the DVD player (and no, they are not all the same) and finally the crispness of the screen. If all goes well, yes it will look perfectly good. But you're not going to know until you do it.

If I want to burn DVDs for a client who will want to edit the footage later, what's the best codec for that?

What editing application will they be editing with?
DVD's aren't the best archival solution. They hold 4.7GB of info, and that is like 20 min of DV quality footage. Forget about HD quality...Oh, unless you use HDV. That's the same data rate

I finished a wedding in France recorded in HD on a Sony XD CAM EX-1
I am editing in Final Cut 6.0.6
I had photos from Photoshop CS4 imported into the film and did not
interlace them. They were accepted into the timeline with the Sony footage: XD Cam EX 1080i 50 35mbs VBR.
I would like to deliver an uncompresssed version on a hard drive playable on VLC through a PC. I would also like to see if I can compress this half hour and put it on a DVD?
Final cut and Compressor had trouble with this footage to make the Quicktime
stand alone video and a 39 Program stream.mpeg
When I did get a successful copy_ they will not copy to an external Hard Drive_ it reads disc error.
Is this because of the mix of interlaced and non interlaced? Should I go back
and interlace all the photos and try again???
What is the best codec to export a full res from Final Cut? ( Quicktime, which ProRes??)
and if I try to put the half hour on a dvd not blue ray ... which codec is best? MPEG2?

as a setting when I edit. I imported some

now concerned about. I could easily interlace them, however, I was thinking
it would be better to de-interlace the video footage instead as everyone
viewing the film would do so on a pc.

Not necessarily true. Yes you'll lose the resolution if you use the simple de-interlace filter in FCP (and many other programs). If, however, you use Frame Controls in Compressor (do a search of this forum and you'll find lots of instructions), you do not lose res, the fields get blended. There are 3rd party products that do the same thing (Nattress has one).
Having said all that, I wouldn't deinterlace unless you need to (like for the web for example), the program's going out to TV? Leave it interlaced.

I at the moment cannot find where Frame Controls in Compressor and saved my project just
before my last step of using the Final Cut Pro de-interlace filter on all of the HD Pal footage.
I had to try 3 times to make a stand alone Quick Time which normally goes smoothly for me, so
I started to wonder if the interlaced video with non-interlaced photos was the problem?
The stand alone Quick Time and the MPEG-2 both gave me trouble and I got an error when
trying to copy them to a drive that was formatted in the only cross platform format I know
being Fat 32. It is a 7200 rpm drive.
I got an answer from Creative Cow on this where the person advised me to convert the file
to Pro Res.
I would appreciate any input.

Carefully examine the codec and pixel dimensions of that output file. That's certainly easy for an experienced VFX person like yourself.
Then carefully look over the presets in FCP to find the same attibutes. You can also use the online help system for FCP and search for "D1"
However, your question remains unanswerable because we don't know how you're getting to the monitor. What are you playing back you AE sequences on that displays them on your LCD? You're assuming we know what you're doing and, I assure you, we do not.

I want to export photo slideshow in hd. I had exported into quicktime h.264 hd but it doesnt support to my Samsung Led tv.
When i exported to mp4 h.264 photo quality gets ruined, everthing looks pixel.
I am using following setting:

bitrate: 256kb/s
frame rate auto
i think problem is with bitrate....please tell me which bitrate to use for smooth video.

iPhoto 11 consists of several versions. What exact version do you have. Use the iPhoto ➙ About iPhoto menu option to get the exact version.
With iPhoto 9.5.1 the size ratio of the slideshow should be set to what you want in the slideshow Settings pane:

As the title says, which are the best settings for exporting comps from AE to Pr.Pro and then edit them?
Let me explain: I have two comps in AE (intro and outro) and want to export them in Pr.Pro for edditing along with a fottage i shot.
When i render them the size of the files are huge (30 sec= 7GB).
Which is the best method (and settings) i can export the intro and outro to a 'normal' file size and then put them in Pr.Pro without loosing any quality??

If you're rendering and exporting an intermediate video file to go from After Effects to any other piece of post-production software (such as Premiere Pro), you want to make sure that you're not losing any quality.
Most compression methods, which make movies smaller, also lose some of the image data---i.e., quality. There are a few compression methods that don't lose any image data; these are "lossless" codecs. These lossless codecs do decrease the size of a video file, but they're nowhere near as effective at decreasing size as the lossy codecs are. But file size isn't important when you're doing post-production work. Big files are a fact of life in post-production.
Examples of lossless codecs include the PNG codec and the Animation codec at the highest quality settings, both of which can be used in a QuickTime (.mov) container. I prefer the PNG codec; it's more efficient for photorealistic images, whereas Animation is more efficient for things like cartoons. There are lots of other lossless and nearly lossless codecs. A lot of people that do video editing like the Lagarith codec, but that is something that you'd have to go and get; it's not part of a standard CS5 or QuickTime installation.

By the way, keep in mind that you don't always need to render and export an intermediate movie to go from After Effects to Premiere Pro. Best practice for exporting a dps folio so a third party can work on it?

Keen for some thoughts on the best practice for exporting a dps folio, indd files, links and all, so a third party can carry on the work. Is their a better alternative to packaging each individual indd file and sharing the folio through adobe?
I know there have been similar questions here in the past, but the last (that i've found) was updated mid 2011 and I was wondering if their have been any improvements to this seemingly backwards workflow since then.

Best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD

I am looking to find out what is the best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD. I have read the other postings that give the basic howto (export to Media Browser then select the video in iDVD). However, my question is a little more technical. I have 1080i HD projects. I am interested in burning them to DVD in the best possible quality. What setting should I be using when I publish to Media Browser?
I am wondering about quality loss due to more than one conversion/compression. I suspect that when I export to the Media Browser then this is occurring. If I am not mistaken iMovie is using something like H.264 for this. Then, when I run iDVD I suspect it will it do another conversion/compression, I think to get to MPEG2. Not only could this result in a loss of quality but also it will take extra time. I am interested to know what others think about this.
Finally, I am looking to create DVDs for a lot of video. I am wondering if there are any USB or firewire hardware devices out there that could speed up the compression. I use the Elgato Turbo.264 when I want to encode to H.264 but I wonder if there is something similar for DVD creation.

the standards for videoDVD are 720x480, and usually mpeg2 encoded..
so, your HiDef project HAS to be 'downsampled' somehow..
I would Export with Qucktime/apple intermediate => which is the 'format' your project is allready, and you avoid any useless 'inbetween encoding'..
iDVD will 'swallow' this huge export file - don't mind: iDVD cares for length, not size.
iDVD will then convert into DVD-standards..
you can 'raise' quality, by using projects <60min - this sets iDVD automatically to highest technical possible bitrate
hint: judge pic quality on a DVDplayer + TV.. not on your computer (DVDs are meant for TVdelivery)
