Best codec to play in pp and keynote?

Hi
Need to output a few files from FCP latest to play in KEYNOTE and powerpoint...I assume .mov files are perfect but what codec is best - h264?

Powerpoint likes WMV files, and Keynote likes H.264.  I use Sorenson Squeeze for my PPoint encodes.

  • QuickTime no longer plays certain MP4 and MOV files

    After upgrading from 10.6 Snow Leopard to 10.9 Mavericks, I've noticed that all the MP4 files taken with my Samsung smartphone no longer play in QuickTime (or with Quick Look), whereas they played just fine in Snow Leopard. The MP4 files use the H.264 codec. Some other MP4s I have, which use the same codec, will play in QuickTime and Quick Look. I've also found some older MOV files (using the SVQ-3 codec) that don't play now.
    Has anyone else encountered this? Is there any fix, or does it perhaps require an OS update? Since I skipped OS 10.7 and 10.8, I don't know what the situation was there.

    You may have better luck in the Quicktime threads.

    Try Quicktime player 7 (it's better if you have a QTPro 7 code)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
    It seems to support everything that it did before Mavericks (including Flip4Mac & Perian codecs), what is different is that the OS uses AVFoundation not Quicktime, the former doesn't support additional codecs therefore there is little hope of getting Finder previews for files with unsupported codecs.

    Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
    The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
    As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
    Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

    My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
    Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

    You can install Perian,
    http://www.perian.org/
    although this will be the last version, and Flip4Mac.
    http://download.cnet.com/Flip4Mac-WMV-Player/3000-13632_4-87679.html
    Otherwise you may have to look at a different and more extensive player such as VLC

    or MPEGStremclip

  • How best to handle a start button and a play-pause toggle button?

    Hello,
    Still new to AS3, on a project for a client. I'd appreciate advice on how best to handle the navigation for 5 movieclips set inside 5 separate frames on the main timeline. I have a play button on frame 1 to start the animation, but I'd like to include a play/pause toggle button on the other frames to finish the navigation. Everything works except the toggle button, when clicked, does toggle but does not stop the animation. I've copied the code, including the toggle button code on frame 4 below. How best to handle both a start button and a play-pause toggle button?
    Thanks for any help in advance.
    Frame 1:
    PlayBtn_mc.buttonMode = true;
    stop();
    PlayBtn_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,startMovie);
    function startMovie(event:MouseEvent) {
    gotoAndPlay(2);
    Frame 2:
    stop();
    Frame 3:
    stop();
    Frame 4:
    RewindBtn_mc.buttonMode = true;
    RewindBtn_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,rewind);
    function rewind(e:MouseEvent) {
    prevFrame();
    FFBtn_mc.buttonMode = true;
    FFBtn_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,forward);
    function forward(e:MouseEvent) {
    nextFrame();
    ToggleBtn_mc.buttonMode = true;
    ToggleBtn_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, doToggle);
    function doToggle(myevent:MouseEvent):void {
    ToggleBtn_mc.play();
    Frame 5:
    (Loops back to Frame 1)

    I can't tell you how appreciative I am of all your assistance.
    Could you double-check on this, I may have stumbled upon somthing- I tweaked your last code, which toggled, but didn't seem to call the scene_test_mc into action.
    But I copied below what both toggles the play/pause button and calls the mc into action. Could you verify this as reliable code and not a fluke that will break? Thank you so much! :
    ToggleBtn_mc.buttonMode = true;
    ToggleBtn_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, doToggle);
    scene_test_mc.buttonMode=true;
    scene_test_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, doToggle);
    function doToggle(myevent:MouseEvent):void {
    var mc:MovieClip=MovieClip(myevent.currentTarget);
    if(mc.currentFrame==1){
    mc.gotoAndStop(2);
    scene_test_mc.play();
    } else {
    mc.gotoAndStop(1);
    scene_test_mc.stop();

  • Best Way to Prepare a Self Running Keynote

    Hi,
    Hoping to mine the collective wisdom here.
    I sell quite complex software solutions to the legal profession, and have a very elaborate Keynote (approx 1 hr when delivering personally) presentation as an initial introduction to the solution.
    Many audiences ask for a copy of this so they can replay it to their colleagues. I have to date exported the Keynote to iDVD and sent that to people who want it. However, this means that I am then relying on a "second-hand" message.
    What I want to do is prepare a DVD with the Keynote AND my narration dubbed on top. I know I can do this in FCP, it's just getting the methodology correct.
    I toyed with "re-doing" each of the Keynote slides in Photoshop etc. to drop into the timeline but have decided against this because some of the Keynote transitions and builds don't seem possible in FCP. So I think my best way is to export the Keynote as a QuickTime movie and pull this into FCP. I can then manually cut the one sequence where I need to without losing the transitions. What I would do is record the audio for a section and then adjust that clip's length in the timeline to match the audio length.
    Is this the best way to go about it?
    Also, when exporting the Keynote to QT, what's the best format to bring it back into FCP? I have already tried exporting in DV and this seems to give good results when played back through QT, but will re-encoding into MPEG2 when I burn the DVD lose more quality than it needs to? Is there a better codec for the initial export from Keynote?
    In fact, am I completely off my trolley using this approach? I'm very happy to be pointed in a totally (better) direction.
    Many thanks.
    David

  • Best setup for playback of video in Keynote?

    I use keynote on a daily basis and find inserting video elements can cause sputtery playback and even flash frames?!! which can be a bit of a problem on a 14meter screen!!
    What is the ideal set-up for playing back video in keynote? I see that the video plays fine in quicktime but as soon as you inbed in keynote you get splutters and the odd flash frame.
    Is there a recommended codec - max size/dimensions - prefured system configuration - hardware recomendations... I see I'm not the only one to have these problems...
    Keynote is a great advancement over powerpoint and should be developed further, even a “designer” edition with more complex design/motion features for us that would like to push the bound’s…. THINK AFTER EFFECTS...
    Thanks,

    I had this problem and it drove me batty. Went to Apple store and 'stumped the stars' with the issue. We tried changing compression to make video smaller, etc to no avail. Sometime video would even lock up.
    I found the solution on this discussion board. Can't recall who to thank. I put the Keynote on an external drive to my MacBookPro. Now it worked much better. Occasionally I will get a short milli-second flash, but no sputtering or no locking up. So I just carry a 80GB external drive with me with my lecture on it an it works great. If you figure out how to get rid of the random flash let me know, on your 14 meter screen it will look like a nuclear test!
    I think what happens when you drive an external projector, in addition to showing the instructors version on your MBP, it is simply too much for either RAM or hard drive to deal with fast enough. So when you put the presentation on an external drive it takes that load off your internal drive. Maybe that is not what really happens but sort of sounds logical. Let me know if it works for you, and let me know if you get (and later solve) the random flash

  • Best codec for slide show?

    I'm making some slide shows in Motion 3 w/ the CoreMelt Image Flow plugins. The slide show also has a moving background and sporadic live type fonts. These slide shows will be presented on a 46" HDTV. What is the best codec to use to maintain quality, but not waste space and minimize rendering time. FWIW The original pictures are TIFFs.

    In the olden days, we'd print to tape and play the tape. End of story. But if you want to use DVDSP, you've got lots of work ahead. Your delivery will be MPEG2 which is awful and requires careful tweaking of all compression settings. MPEG2 is not pretty on big sets.
    Lots of patience and research and experimentation, there is no magic formula, although there is a wealth of information on the Net and locally available in your DVDSP manual.
    If you don't have time to work through the weirdly interrelated variables, just use the defaults all the way down the line, lower your expectations.

  • Video Won't Play in Client's Keynote Presentation

    I have authored a file on my iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core i5 (OSX 10.8.3) using Keynote v5.3.
    On some slides I have embedded .flv videos that play fine on my computer when I play back my Keynote.
    My client is on a 2GHz Intel Core Duo (think it's a desktop) and when he plays the file back, he only gets the sound and a black box where the video should play.
    What's wrong?

    Thanks for this! I was having a simliar problem wherein my colleague's keynote presentation was transferred to my Macbook Air but not all the video files were playing, instead a black box appeared with the tracker at the bottom but with no audio or video. I had to change the file to a zip file then change it back to a .key just to be able to view the "package contents". That's when i found out that the videos that didnt play were mp42. My quicktime player said that it didnt have the codec to play it so i just downloaded Flip4Mac and now everything works fine! Whew!

  • The best Codec for Premiere CS4

    I am trying to learn more about codecs, but still having trouble understanding it fully. I have a new computer, so it makes sense that I need a certain codec to install in order to view my video as I edit on Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. My footage works on Windows Media Player, and the quality is somewhat Poor when I play it on Quicktime (but at least it works).
    Now a few questions I have. First, does anyone know the best codec to use for Adobe Premiere Pro? I import DV files from my camcorder, and almost all of my video files are ".avi"
    Also, I notice that the codecs are different for each media player that I apply this footage to. And I simply see instructions to download the correct codec. Well first I dont know which codec would be best for my setup, plus my second question: Once I do install the correct codec, will Premiere automatically know to use that codec? Or do I have to adjust a certain setting in Premiere to make the correct codec function? I could not see any setting that allowed me to change the codec...
    Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    -Rick Phillips

    Ok, back from my break from all this, now time to get back to work. I will respond to everyone's post with the hopes that everyone will continue to be awesome and help me through this:
    Glenn - I would upload a clip, but all of my video files are well over 5MB, and to do this I would have to recapture a clip, and spend alot of time making sure I upload it correctly, when i have already spent so much time trying to fix this and I simply do not think it is relevant at this point.
    Harm - I'll see if I can get your questions answered properly. The only item under my Display Adapters is the Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. I contacted HP about how to find out what my Graphics and Video drivers were, and all they could say was that they are all components of this Chipset Family.
    I do not know how to determine which Codec Adobe is trying to use (or needs for that matter). And I have downloaded so many suggested codecs it's not even funny, I dont even know which ones are in use at this point.
    The camera I am using is a Canon GL2 MiniDV Camcorder, with a firewire cable. These are my Sequence Settings:
    -DV NTSC
    29.97 Frames/Second
    Frame Size 720 x 430 (4:3 ratio)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC (0.9091)
    -Lower Field First
    Display Format: 30fps Drop-Frame Timecode
    Preview File Format: NTSC DV
    Codec: DV NTSC (will not allow me to configure)
    So G-Spot will not properly identify the codecs that come with Premiere ProCS4... Then why in the world was I instructed to download it?... I have so many things to delete from my computer as soon as I have the solution.
    Keano66 - I agree with you completely, I am positive that it is a driver issue. I downloaded Driver Doctor/Driver Detective (and paid for it, eeek...) and it shows that my graphics driver does indeed need to be updated. I have downloaded and updated all of these drivers, However Premiere Pro has not changed a bit...
    But the reason I think it is a driver issue: I was instructed by HP support to completely uninstall this chipset Driver, and then to reinstall it from the HP website. So i did that and restarted the computer, and guess what? Premiere was FINALLY WORKING!!!! but then I had a different problem, all the icons on my computer and diplay settings were messed up, and I was then Instructed by HP to install updates to this driver. When I did this, all of my display settings were set back to normal, and everything seemed fine, except now, once again, I am back to square 1 with my problems on premiere Pro... Like before, it plays the sound, but not the video...
    Any suggestions?  Thanks everyone!
    -Rick

  • Best choices for optimizing video quality and playability

    I'm shooting family videos with a Panasonic TM-900 camcorder. I absolutely love the look of video shot in 1080p 60fps, but I'm not sure of the best way to process this video in FCPX for output. I prefer playing back edited videos on a HTPC connected to a NTSC HDTV, but I also distribute videos to family members on DVD. So my questions are: what are the best settings for FCPX to achieve a good balance of video quality and playability. Best frame rate for output files? Best codec? Will H.264 compression compromise video quality? My experiments so far have yielded wildly different results. Depending on the codec used and output frame rate selected, file sizes can be huge or reasonable; playability (via home theater programs like Plex and XBMC) can be superb, jerky, or non-existent. And of course, quality seems to suffer when outputting these files to DVD. Please share your thoughts and experiences on the best way to approach this challenge.

    Working with H.264  is probably not going to give the best results if outputting to DVD. If you optimize media and let FCP determine your clips project settings, that will set the stage for several successful workflows.
    If you're OK with a basic menu, you could simply use Share DVD and let FCP do all the work. It will change the frame rate to 29.97, and the quality should be pretty decent.(If you want more control over the quality settings, Compressor can do a similar job; output a master file and bring that into Compressor.)
    If you want a more complex DVD and menu, what Al said about Master File>iDVD.
    Also as he indicated,  you could also consider using either FCP or Compressor to create AVCHD disks if your movies are under about 40 minutes in length. Your family will need Blu Ray players of some sort to be able to view them.
    You could make a true Blu Ray disk from FCP or Compressor if you have a Blu Ray burner. (There are also some third party solutions for BD.)

  • Best codec for out to stand alone HD video playable through VLC on PC

    I finished a wedding in France recorded in HD on a Sony XD CAM EX-1
    I am editing in Final Cut 6.0.6
    I had photos from Photoshop CS4 imported into the film and did not
    interlace them. They were accepted into the timeline with the Sony footage: XD Cam EX 1080i 50 35mbs VBR.
    I would like to deliver an uncompresssed version on a hard drive playable on VLC through a PC. I would also like to see if I can compress this half hour and put it on a DVD?
    Final cut and Compressor had trouble with this footage to make the Quicktime
    stand alone video and a 39 Program stream.mpeg
    When I did get a successful copy_ they will not copy to an external Hard Drive_ it reads disc error.
    Is this because of the mix of interlaced and non interlaced? Should I go back
    and interlace all the photos and try again???
    What is the best codec to export a full res from Final Cut? ( Quicktime, which ProRes??)
    and if I try to put the half hour on a dvd not blue ray ... which codec is best? MPEG2?
    Thanks very much,
    Bill Phipps

    Hi Kevin,
    Thanks for your input. I shot the wedding in France in PAL on the Sony EX1 using
    XD Cam EX 1080i 50 35mbs VBR. And want to deliver to bride and groom
    a full HD copy on a hard drive to be played on a pc using VLC software.
    I was able to load my foootage and Sony allows me to select this in Final Cut
    as a setting when I edit. I imported some
    still photos from Photoshop and these are not interlaced. Something I am
    now concerned about. I could easily interlace them, however, I was thinking
    it would be better to de-interlace the video footage instead as everyone
    viewing the film would do so on a pc.
    I went on Creative Cow and have gotten a thread
    from Creative Cow which tells me:
    Re: To deinterlace,or not to deinterlace
    by Ed Dooley on Jan 8, 2009 at 11:01:35 am
    Not necessarily true. Yes you'll lose the resolution if you use the simple de-interlace filter in FCP (and many other programs). If, however, you use Frame Controls in Compressor (do a search of this forum and you'll find lots of instructions), you do not lose res, the fields get blended. There are 3rd party products that do the same thing (Nattress has one).
    Having said all that, I wouldn't deinterlace unless you need to (like for the web for example), the program's going out to TV? Leave it interlaced.
    Ed
    I at the moment cannot find where Frame Controls in Compressor and saved my project just
    before my last step of using the Final Cut Pro de-interlace filter on all of the HD Pal footage.
    I had to try 3 times to make a stand alone Quick Time which normally goes smoothly for me, so
    I started to wonder if the interlaced video with non-interlaced photos was the problem?
    The stand alone Quick Time and the MPEG-2 both gave me trouble and I got an error when
    trying to copy them to a drive that was formatted in the only cross platform format I know
    being Fat 32. It is a 7200 rpm drive.
    I got an answer from Creative Cow on this where the person advised me to convert the file
    to Pro Res.
    I would appreciate any input.
    Thanks for your time and attention.
    Bill
