Best college laptop?

Looking to buy laptop as a gift for incoming freshman engineering student in the fall.  Which MacBook Pro?  Screen Size?  HD size?
Thanks

The student should contact the Engineering School to get their recommendation for a computer. The student's computer should be the one most compatible with the professors, other students, and software he needs to run. Engineering is hard enough without having to worry about homework, projects, and assignment compatibility issues.

  • The best overall laptop

Alright tech guys I have a challenge. I am currently searching for the best overall laptop to purchase. I am looking for a combination of processor power, economy and features. I have about 1,100 dollars to spend, so I am looking for the best laptop for that price. I will admit, I do want an i7 processor (or equivalent) and at least a 650 GB hard drive. Any suggestions? I am not biased towards any single company or product, so I can be swayed any direction. Thanks so much for your guidance!
About me: Avid gamer, college student, and I do like to work with Adobe AfterEffects so I need a powerful computer!

I will just toss out ASUS as the brand that I recommend without hesitation 99% of the time. One of the guys who are more intune with current models may have a better suggestion for you, but they currently make the best PC laptops on the market.

  • The best Mac laptop to use Final Cut Pro 4???

I don't know much about Macs and I know even less about Mac laptops! Someone told me that the macbook (Intel based??) would be the best mac laptop to use with Final Cut Pro 4. Could someone tell me if this IS my best option or if I should be looking for a powerbook? What specs do I need to be looking for? I know that I need a G4 or higher, but the memory, speed, etc... I'm clueless about...

Get a MacBookPro 17" and upgrade to FCP5.1
You need the 17" to get the firewire 800 port - necessary if you want to edit anything more than DV or HDV.
The upgrade from FCP4 to FCP5.1 is very inexpensive now (offer expires in mid December) and you would be very foolish to not do it.
    good luck.

  • Best Mac Laptop for X Code Development

    Hi,
I'm trying to make some ios Apps from the X Code. So what is the best Mac Laptop to use this for..
I'm expecting your kind response from yours.
    Thank you,
    Iranga.

    Anyone should do the job.
However, when writing software, the larger the screen the better, as often times you have multiple windows open for different aspects of your development project (code, debugging, simulator, documentation, UI builder, etc...).
Of course if most of your development time will be done at a desk were you can setup an external monitor (an inexpensive 24" 1080p), then again any laptop would do.  The asumetion being that you want the portability of the laptop so you can travel or surf the web while relaxing in a comfy chair (not actually working on your code).
Whatever you get, just get lots of RAM and sufficient disk space for your needs.  Also make sure you have regular backups, as loosing a coding project is extremely painful, and the code you write to replace it never seems to live up to what you lost (first hand experience talking here).  Also using a source code control system is useful.  Checkin your changes on a regular basis, as sometimes coding changes do not work out the way you expected, and being able to go back to an older version is extremely helpful (also first hand experience).

  • What is the best PC laptop to use with Premiere Pro 2014?

I'm excited that I get to buy a NEW LAPTOP!!!
I'm editing a documentary with tons of footage.  I'll use external SSD drive for files.
What is the best PC laptop to get for editing movies on Premiere Pro 2014?
I can spend up to $1500
Thanks SO MUCH for your help!!!!

premiere will run fine with the 7200rpm hdd. while editing, if your hdd/ssd isn't fast enough it will stutter and skip as it cant feed the data fast enough to premiere. thats with high bitrate footage, if you are using low bitrate footage the 7200rpm might work ok to hold your footage too. odds are that external samsung ssd will be fast enough to hold the media, project cache and any preview files. you shouldn't need another external hdd for export/render.
the ssd for internal will let windows boot faster and let programs open and close faster. once windows is loaded and programs are opened, they load into ram. there is little to be gained after that for ssd/hdd speeds while using most programs.

  • Daryl J - Best Gaming Laptops?

    Hi,
This is Daryl J {removed per forum guidelines}, I am very much interested in games. That;s why I am looking for the best gaming laptops. If anyone have any idea regarding it then please suggest me as soon as possible...
    Thanks
    Daryl J {removed per forums guidelines}

    Hey Daryl,
Before I make any recommendations, I have a couple questions for you. Do you have a price range in mind? Do you already have a preferred Brand? I can tell you that Alienware and Asus are among the best brands for gaming laptops. Other than being good for gaming, do you know any other features that are very important to you? Will you travel out of the house with this laptop? What type of games do you want to play?
Proving these details about your preferences and lifestyle will help me make a better recommendation for you!

  • Best gaming laptop out there?

Hi, is anyone aware of the best gaming laptop that I can find at the moment? The price is not really an issue at this point, I just want to see what is out there. Thanks!
    This question was solved.

Forget HP. They all have inadequate fan and heat sink designs for heavy gaming.
     http://www.pro-star.com/index.cfm?mainpage=productdetail&model=X8100&subpage=spec#gotop
This has three fans, two of which are dedicated to the CPU and GPU, one for each. The laptop is designed specifically for gaming.
This laptop's specs. blows any thing that HP has out of the water.

  • Best college choice?

I'm going to college within the next 5 months, but my iMac recently broke (yesterday) so I'm in the market for a laptop now.
I know this is a common question, but what's a better choice - macbook or macbook pro?
My G5 iMac worked fine for me, and it was 2.1ghz with 2.5 gigs, so I assume a 2.4ghz macbook with 2 gigs, possibly upgraded to 4, will be more than enough. However, I also want a computer that'll last me throughout my entire 4+ years at school, so the pro sounds like an equally good choice.
The macbook's only fault when compared to the pro seems to be the graphics(does an extra 100ghz really make a difference?)and I'm not much of a video editior, some photoshop, but not a lot. However, the pro's screen would make everyday use a lot easier because of its size.
I get a $100 education discount, plus I have $100 rebate from my iPhone, so take into consideration I'll get $200 off. That isn't to say price isn't an option. If I had to get a macbook, I'd get a fully loaded 4 gig black one, and if I had to get a pro, I'd get a mid-range 2.5ghz 15'' one, with possibly upgraded 4 gigs also.
Can anyone in college vouche and say which they prefer? That is, the best computer for carrying around, yet good enough to be an everyday desktop.
    Thanks!

I was in for a laptop, too, recently. The choice was between a 2.4GHz MacBook and MacBook Pro (I think the money for the 2.5 MBP is better spend on software or RAM/HDD/...). The main difference is the bigger and considerably better screen of the Pro. If you won't make use of the fast graphics, then that doesn't really count, does it? Having a PowerMac G5 at home, which I use for all the heavy stuff, I decided for the MacBook. With the money I saved compared to the Pro I got Aperture and an Airport Extreme Base Station.
I have to say though, that if the notebook were my only computer, I would have got the Pro. The screen of the MacBook ist just not that great. It's fine when being on the road or at school, but e.g. for watching a movie, the limited viewing angle can be annoying. So I suggest, you go with the Pro. But think about whether it really has to be the 2.5GHz model - in my opinion, the 2.4GHz model is the much better deal...
    Cheers,
    Daniel

  • I can't transfer Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to my new college laptop. I need help.

Okay, so I bought APE 9 a good 2 years ago for high school and now I am going into Television in College, I have had to buy a newer laptop. My old laptop will be wiped by my father (who, might I add, is very impatient). I need the program to be transferred onto the new laptop....and no, I am not buying the upgrade for another $100. Can anyone help?

Simply deactivate it on the old machine and install it on the new one.

  • What's the best Mac laptop to run pro tools 10 on?

I use a Mac desktop at work and wanted to get a laptop to do extra audio production on using Protools 10..
Which Mac laptop would be the best to go for..
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The 15-inch MacBook Pro is the best computer. It has got a quad-core processor, it supports 16 GB of memory that you can install yourself without voiding warranty, two graphic cards, etc.
You can also have a look at the 13-inch MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air, but they probably won't give you the performance you really want

  • What is the BEST gaming laptop for under $3,000.00

I am looking around and comparing gaming PCs and laptops.  I am strongly leaning toward a laptop because I already have a fairly nice PC, but it really isn't built for gaming.  Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.  I like:

  • Best Possible Laptop (PC) that I can use...

I have to use a laptop for many reasons, but, if I were to go out the door today and buy one (or online), what laptop is going to be the best to use for projects and what should it have to successfully produce After Effects, Premiere, etc projects?
oh and on a budget of around 3K...
I will only come here so all opinions are welcome!

For 3k, you could sponsor NASA's next trip to the moon... It's a lot of money to throw on a lapi, so you should have no problem finding a good performance machine. Maybe you can wait a few weeks and then the new NVidia chips are available (just read this on heise.de). Of course there's nothing wrong with current ATI or NVidia chipsets, either. Since you have sufficient funding, definitely get a 17/18" notebook. All those pallettes and windows need space. Also definitely max out memory, meaning take the full 4GB you get. There are some notebooks that allow even 8GB, but that seems excessive in terms of power consumption as it will reduce the time you can run on battery drastically. Also they would only make sense with Vista 64bit and that likewise is a bit impractical for mobile use, as it takes longer to boot. The rest should only be of minor consequence. Highend-ish laptops usually have anything from multiple USB ports to HDMI connectors and they use the more powerful processors to begin with. If you need it, finding models with FireWire ports may require a bit of searching, as it's not as widely used anymore as previously. One last thing: from June 26th, Microsoft's upgrade period for Windows 7 begins, so if you wait just that tad longer, you may be entitled to a free upgrade from Vista, when W7 is relesed in October.

  • Best computer (laptop or desktop) for Arch

The title basically says it...what are some computers, either laptops or desktops, that everything works straight out of the box with Archlinux? I'm talking 3D support and everything. Thanks!! (Looking at the hardware compatibility list, it looks like the Dell Latitude D620 completely works :-)

    cpslanet wrote:
My experience is that pretty much everything works painlessly with linux these days. The only thing you might have to look out for include 1) Soundcard, if you want higher fidelity than some onboard chip. Check alsa status when in doubt. 2) Any other "exotic" hardware such as raid controllers and the like, a quick google should tell you wether a driver exists for the hardware in question. 3) As someone pointed out the proprietary nvidia driver is by far the best at the moment, so better go with that. It should support pretty much any nvidia card out there.
Choosing arch should mean that even more hardware should be supported since packages are near bleeding edge.
Pretty much. For some parts you might have to taint your kernel, for example nvidia cards and broadcom wireless chipsets.

  • What is the best model laptop that 9.2.2 can start up on?

I'm looking to buy an old laptop that starts up Classic 9.2.2 like the iMac G3 does and can also run a version of OS X (at least 10.3.9). Would those be Powerbooks or iBooks or both? What is the fastest model I should look for?

Click here. All of the iBooks which fit those criteria are G3s.

  • Best HP laptops to provide service for

I am not a computer tech, but a civilian who would like to service his own HP laptop in order to save money on repairs.
I saw a refurb (dv6-6c35dx) on bestbuy that did have a service model, and I expect to be in the market for a new or refurb HP laptop in teh very near future.
    (1) Are there certain product lines that do/don't have service manuals available?
    (2) Also, are there certain product lines (for laptops) that would/would not be recommended for an amateur wanting to service his own laptop (I do have some experience doing this with laptops in the past)?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Service manuals are available for all HP laptops here. Current laptops are much harder to work on than say 5 years ago. They are much flimsier and there are a lot more internal components. It would be similar to somebody who had worked on cars in the '60s trying to work on a modern car. Having said that, many things are doable by a skilled first timer. Screen replacement is a good example. And in any event there is very little repair. It is mostly identification and replacement of defective components. Anything other than a complete motherboard replacement is doable for an "amateur", really, but the motherboard replacement is a common necessity. The other rough rule of thumb to keep in mind is that the ease of service is proportional to the thickness of the laptop. The large 17 inch desktop replacements have more room inside to work on them. Again, kind of like cars. And don't forget you have this Forum. We can usually help troubleshoot and identify the problem component; is it hardware or software, etc.
