Best compliment to an iMac?

(Same post as in MBP forum, just wanted in both places)
Hello,
I want a new portable, but am still trying to decide the best fit. I already have a 20' iMac, Core Duo, 2 gig RAM, 256 vram as my main computer. I'm looking to get a portable to compliment this machine, mainly to just have a machine I can travel with, go to a cafe, etc. Nothing to intensive. I'm trying to figure out the best bang for my buck, so to speak. (i.e., if spending $1, 100 on a low-end MB, why not spend 1300 on the mid-range, and if spending that, why not go 1500 on a refurb MBP, CD1, etc). Thats my line of thinking and I can't seem to get it straight in my head . Basically I need help determining where to draw the line between going overboard, or going to "underboard" and ending up with a lower grade machine when a few more bucks would've gotten me alot more. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have an iMac but it's a 2GHz G5 as well as a MacBook. I will say that the MacBook not only compares favorably to it but in some instances out shines it. I realize you have an Intel iMac so I'm guessing (and only guessing) that the performance will be close to if not on par with your iMac.
That wasn't always the case though. I also had an iMac DV/SE and a PowerBook both at 400Mhz and the iMac ran circles around the PowerBook. The PowerBook made OSX very frustrating.
Honestly the only difference in "real world" performance between the MacBook line is whether you need a DVD burner or not (which you could get away without since your iMac can do it). If it were me and the burner wasn't an issue I'd get the cheap MacBook. I really can't speak for the MacBook Pro since I don't own or use one. But I assume that the performance would be equal if not more (obviously).
I really don't think you'd go underboard with whatever MacBook you bought nor do I think you'd go overboard if you got a good deal on a MacBook Pro.
Whatever you do I think you'd be pleased. Good luck!

Hi, what's the best way to replace IMAC 27'' glass when broken (latest Imac generation from end 2012) ?  Thanks,

Not sure about the 2012 models but the 2010 ones can be removed in seconds, using a suction cup on the top corner. I use my tomtom to lift it away. It is attached by magnets.
    Hope this helps.

I think it just depends on what you want the machine for. if it's just your portable personal machine, then there's a lot to like about the macbooks. the current blackbooks are really lovely machines, and they have tons of x-factor. for the size they are, there's not a lot to fault in them, and everyone I know that has one is totally enamored with the machine. they seem to have a bit of personality about them that really makes you feel attached to it, which a lot of people find attractive in a laptop that they want to whip out at a café.
of course if anything you do requires more screen real estate, or proper graphics support, then you have no choice but to go macbook pro.
but I will say one thing.. I have the latest top of the range MBP 17".. I don't use it as a laptop, it stays put as my work machine. but, my brother my partner and a few friends have a blackbook as personal machines, and to be honest, the whole feel of the machines and how they are built feels somehow more solid and dare I say it, better quality than my apple flagship model MBP. go figure.
I still use my PB 12" as my personal lappy, and am still happy with it. but when I've got some cash floating around that looks bored and could do with being spent, I'll prob buy into a blackbook as my café and inflight machine.

  • Best way to connect iMac to TV

What's the best way to connect my iMac (2011) to my TV? My TV has HDMI inputs and my iMac has Thunderbolt ports, so I know I can connect them with a cable, but they are about 20 feet apart and I think that's too long for a cable run. Does anyone have suggestions?
    TIA,
    Thad

Get an Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and a 20 feet long HDMI cable.
There is no problem with the length, but a 25 feet HDMI cable will be around 20$ on eBay.
If you need to really go long distance, then you could get a HDMI over CAT6  extender.
This one will allow 130 feet.
Some models will let you extend up to 1000 feet!

  • Best hosting plan for iMac and PC editing?

I've been using iWeb for the past year on my personal site. I love its ease of use, not to mention how great everything looks.
Now I want to start another site with a more commercial flavor. The big difference with this one, though, is that I need to be able to update my site on my iMac at home AND my PC at work. I've yet to find a hosting plan or program that will allow me to do this efficiently. I'm thinking a web-based file manager might be my best option, but maybe there is something else out there that would be better. Would FTP be better? I have some experience with file managers but absolutely no experience with FTP.
This new site will mostly be set up in a blog style (several updates each day, permalinks, etc.), and I also want to be as flexible as possible in posting ads on the site. It seems some blogging software is fairly restrictive when it comes to ad flexibility.
Anybody have suggestions as to what might work best for my circumstances? I would appreciate any help.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Of course you can't use iWeb for your project, because it doesn't run on PC's, and you can't update an iWeb-created site without the app and the appropriate Domain file. So you presumably need to look at a cross-platform app like Dreamweaver.
As far as uploading technology, web-based file managers provided by the host are usually very limited and not to be recommended. You should use a real ftp client to get the best results, and major apps like Dreamweaver have this built-in.
Here's a list of Mac web editors. You might check to see which other ones have Windows versions.
    http://www.pure-mac.com/webed.html
The host is pretty irrelevant if you go that route.
Another option is to do everything on a site like Blogger, where you create your pages via a browser, rather than using a local web editor.

  • How to migrate What is the best way to connectold iMac to new iMac

What is the best way to connect a 2006 iMac to a 2013 iMac? ( Lion to Mountain Lion )
I have a TM on the older Mac. I understand using set-up is best. I cannot afford to lose
    Any data.
    Thanks.

By Firewire. However, you will need a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor from Apple to use on your new iMac.

  • Best Practices for new iMac

I posted a few days ago re failing HDD on mid-2007 iMac. Long story short, took it into Apple store, Genius worked on it for 45 mins before decreeing it in need of new HDD. After considering the expenses of adding memory, new drive, hardware and installation costs, I got a brand new iMac entry level (21.5" screen,
2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory, 1TB HDD running Mavericks). Also got a Superdrive. I am not needing to migrate anything from the old iMac.
I was surprised that a physical disc for the OS was not included. So I am looking for any Best Practices for setting up this iMac, specifically in the area of backup and recovery. Do I need to make a boot DVD? Would that be in addition to making a Time Machine full backup (using external G-drive)? I have searched this community and the Help topics on Apple Support and have not found any "checklist" of recommended actions. I realize the value of everyone's time, so any feedback is very appreciated.

OS X has not been officially issued on physical media since OS X 10.6 (arguably 10.7 was issued on some USB drives, but this was a non-standard approach for purchasing and installing it).
To reinstall the OS, your system comes with a recovery partition that can be booted to by holding the Command-R keys immediately after hearing the boot chimes sound. This partition boots to the OS X tools window, where you can select options to restore from backup or reinstall the OS. If you choose the option to reinstall, then the OS installation files will be downloaded from Apple's servers.
If for some reason your entire hard drive is damaged and even the recovery partition is not accessible, then your system supports the ability to use Internet Recovery, which is the same thing except instead of accessing the recovery boot drive from your hard drive, the system will download it as a disk image (again from Apple's servers) and then boot from that image.
Both of these options will require you have broadband internet access, as you will ultimately need to download several gigabytes of installation data to proceed with the reinstallation.
There are some options available for creating your own boot and installation DVD or external hard drive, but for most intents and purposes this is not necessary.
The only "checklist" option I would recommend for anyone with a new Mac system, is to get a 1TB external drive (or a drive that is at least as big as your internal boot drive) and set it up as a Time Machine backup. This will ensure you have a fully restorable backup of your entire system, which you can access via the recovery partition for restoring if needed, or for migrating data to a fresh OS installation.

  • What's the best specifications for 27" iMac in order to run Windows for best performance?

Hey there. I'm based in the UK and in the process of saving up for my first ever iMac (the new 27" model starting from £1699) after years of owning PC's and laptops, but now I'm finally fed up with Windows-based machines, they just don't cut it when it comes to performance and workload...etc.
I wanted to pick iMac users on the community to get clear advice on what the ideal specifications I should consider configuring my iMac when I finally get round to placing my order in March/April. I aim to run Windows 7/ or 8 via Parallels as I hear it's very good and from what video tutorials of it I've seen on YouTube it appears impressive to think the iMac can handle this at the same time as running Mountain Lion.
The ram I plan on upgrading myself manually, yes - I've sussed that one that very quickly due to Apple's extensive £400 fee to simply upgrade the iMac to 32GB, Crucial here I come!
...I digress a little. I'm torn between the Quad-core i5 and i7 as I don't want to get something that won't deliver best performance when it comes to running Windows in parallel (or coherence mode as I hear it's called). Below are some specs I've configured on 2 saved iMacs in my saved baskets.
    CONFIGURATION #1
3.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    1TB Fusion Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
    Order total: £2,019
    CONFIGURATION #2
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    3TB Fusion Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
    Order total: £2,299
I'd appreciate anybody's time and patience on this little matter. Thank you.

You don't need to go overboard on your hardware to run windows effectively.  I bootcamp win7 on a late 2008 MacBook Pro with no issues. However, for an intense windows game I boot straight into windows.  If you do not plan on gaming other than an occasional instance by your brother than this should be an acceptable solution.
One caveat is ram which you have already stated your are upgrading.
A general rule of thumb I live by is get the best you can afford now and it will prolong the need to upgrade in the future.  That being said...  The choices you have provided are all good choices.  Preference on screen size will dictate your overall decision, of course.   The need for i5 vs i7 CPU is normally not a factor for the majority of users.  If you need to save some money then by all means choose the lesser configuration as it will handle windows fine.
One place you should consider the upgrade is the video card.  Since you cannot upgrade this after purchase it is advisable to do this now.  Also, the differences between the 675mx and the 680mx are far greater than what the naming implies.
Also, as mentioned in a previous post, the 3TB fusion drive can't bootcamp windows.  There is a hack for the non-fusion version, but I have not heard of anyone getting that hack to work on the fusion drive.   There are other creative options you can implement to make this work, however, it will require an additional investment in some 3rd party hardware.  For a novice Mac user I would recommend the smaller fusion drive and external thunderbolt/USB storage as dictated by your needs in the future.

  • Best memory for 2006 iMac

Hi everyone. I need to buy memory for a late 2006 24" iMac intel core 2 duo (EMC-2111). I've been told this machine can only be brought up to 3 GBs. The first attempt did not go so well. What would be the best memory to buy and from where? Thanks!

I so wish that I'd found this thread before purchasing my memory. As it is I got a 4GB kit from Ramjet.
Are there any strong opinions either way on this?
Also, I have a late 2006 iMac that was supposed to be able to 'take' 4GB, but would only use 3. However when I discussed this with Ramjet I was advised that a firmware update had taken care of that problem and it would now utilize the entire 4.
I know I should have checked more thoroughly before buying the memory, but hindsight etcetera.......
I'd appreciate input on both issues. Thanks.

  • Best External HD for iMac

    Hello Smart People~
I still consider myself a novice MAC user, so please pardon my ignorance. My iMac is starting to move quite slowly. I have a LOT (over 5700) of photos on iPhoto and thought that transferring them to an external HD might help.
What is the best external HD to store photos from iPhoto?
    Is this the right step?
    Thanks and happy holidays!!

+"What external HD do you suggest? Does it matter?"+
Just get get some advice from the geeks at your local electronics store, tell them it is for a MAC. You can get either USB or Firewire. With Firewire you can make it "Bootable" so that you could boot from it if something nasty were to happen to your internal HD.
For RAM go to a site like crucial.com and you can enter your Mac model and it will tell you what RAM should be used. And if you click on the Blue Apple in the top left corner of your screen and click "About this Mac" => More Info and let us know the Machine Model someone can tell you how much RAM your Mac will handle and also use this info when selecting RAM (eg. Crucial.com)

  • Best Video Drivers For iMac G5 PPC

Ok now that the debacle caused by the ATI Drivers is over, Is there a recommended driver which provides the best results (ie. Fast, High Quality, Low Resourse) I seem to remember downloading one which enahnced Quartz (long time ago) I also recently came across drivers from ATI (Circa 2005) ATI Displays 4.5.7 and ATIccelerator II 1.0.6b which appeared to be improvements. Any suggestions?

I do not have the iMac G5.
My assumption is that your G5 has a hardware problem with video circuitry. I'd assume in safemode the software is doing the video rendering where as in a normal boot the hardware does the video rendering. In normal mode bad hardware means no workie.
You did a clean install, I assume.  The software is good!  Your machine worked before with this software.  All points to a hardware problem.
It is quit clever of Apple to get your machine working using safemode drivers.
Software problems can be strange.  Never hurts to try, but the chances of success are infinitely near zero.

  • Best solutions for my imac?

Ok so, recently my imac has been messing about. its decided it doesnt want to read any discs at all. Luckily, i had to have it sent into apple due to the recall of the seagate harddrives, and so i asked them to check my disc drive for me, to see if it was working or not. Apparently not, surprise surprise. so they quoted me £300! for a fix, obviously i was pretty shocked and immediately refused. So really i wandered what my best solution is? ive been told external disc drives are cheap and would provide the function i need (to read/use games/cds etc.) but i wondered if there are any other alternatives and also which external disc drives are the best out there? links would be great!
    thanks muchly, myers.

    thanks for the reply,
however, it might have been worth mentioning, im really just looking for a cheap option. in my eyes, all its gotta do is read discs amd allow me to install and run games and other programs/applications that i may use that involve discs. so really, id be looking for the best, cheap external disc drive. sorry to be a pain!

  • Best anti virus for imac

Just got new iMac,  looking for advice on best recommended anti-virus to use?   Thanks

If you are a former Windows user, the first thing you must do is rid yourself of the assumption that a Mac needs the same daily maintenance that Windows PCs require just to keep them operating. The vast majority of Mac-related problems reported on this site are the direct result of installing ill-conceived "anti-virus" or "security" garbage. If you don't want to come back here wondering why your Mac is running like a sick dog then avoid all such junk.
Intego VirusBarrier in particular caused a brand new Mac containing nothing other than Mavericks and one minimally configured User account became practically unusable with frequent beachballs, intermittent unresponsiveness, and an occasional momentary black screen. No experienced Mac user would consider such behaviour acceptable.
Macs are designed to be used, not pampered and fussed over constantly. Installing extra "anti-virus" or "cleaning" apps is only likely to cause problems, despite what their developers claim. The most highly visible and aggressively marketed products are often nothing more than scams.
Just got new iMac,  looking for advice on best recommended anti-virus to use?
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Best way to manage iMac and two iPads?

Have a new iMac (Intel,OS X Lion) and two iPad 2.  The iMac is mine the and iPads are my kids. We all have our own apple IDs.  I ultimately want to do any downloading/purchasing on the iMac and then transfer the music/apps/movies to the iPads.
What is the best way to manage them so I can sync the iMac to the iPads?
Can I download apps/music etc. on my iMac and then sync it to both of the iPads?
Do I need to use the same Apple ID on all of them if I want to sync the iMac to the iPads?   I would prefer not to store credit card info on the kids iPads.
Whats the most efficient way to handle this?  Sorry for so many questions.  Its a hazard of being a newbie.
    Thanks, Courtney

The best way I can think of is for each iMac user create their own account for them. Then when they log in they can sync to their own AppleID account. It keeps things simple and separate. If you don't know how to create accounts please look over http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mtusr001.html
