Best computer for ID

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but here goes. I am running a Dual 1.25 GHZ processor, and was wondering how much faster one of the new Apple line will help. has anyone made an upgrade and found the new speed significant to justify buying a new unit. I do a 300 page monthly catalog and I thought maybe upgrading would help.
Ron

Don't know how much ram you have, but from my experience in the past maxing out ram usually brings better speeds and overall performance than processor upgrades. A lot cheaper, too. I haven't done much upgrading of either one lately, so that may not hold true with the newest generation of processors.

What is the best Computer for HD video editing where can I get it under $3000- $5000.00?

The wording of your question suggests you may be new to video editing, in which case the types of projects you will be doing may not be the most complex.
Please accept my apology if that assumption is incorrect.
The cheapest computer available will edit 1080p video perfectly well but if you must have the "best" you will be looking at nothing less than a MacPro.
Too many people get hung up about the equipment they use  and blame it for any inadequacies  .  .  .  when the most important component is the operator.

  • Best computer for FCP

    Greetings,
I have been editing feature films and video projects on my PowerMac G4 867Mhz for 5 years. I use FCP 5.1 and DVD Studio Pro mostly.
To replace my computer, I would like to buy a 24" iMac with a 7200rpm Hard Drive for smooth handling of HD footage. Does anyone know how this model performs with Final Cut Studio apps?
Also, I gave some thought to a MacPro, but it just seems like too much power for what I usually do.
I was thinking of buying a MacBook Pro, since I mostly do straight cuts and little 3D effects. Also, being mobile is a plus, but the price is a bit steep.
In addition to the iMac, I would like to buy a MacBook, where I could do simple cuts on the go (I know it is not supported, but many collegues have said FCP works fine on MacBook).
Any advice/ experience stories are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

While some use the iMac for FCP, it is not an ideal solution as you can not add any additional internal disks for scratch drives nor add a pci firewire card or to isolate the camera from the external drive it is highly recommended you have. In addition, if you do decide to work at higher datarate formats, there is no way to add a pci esata card or an HD card either.
All in all, not a 'best computer for fcp'.
Go with a MacBookPro 17" which has a large enough screen to edit with on the go or a MacPro desktop. Both allow for expansion of capabilities.
    good luck.

  • Best computer for FCP on college budget

Help! I am trying to decide exactly the machine I need to edit with Final Cut Pro at home. I am a college student so my budget is my student loan money (around $2000).
First, I prefer to be portable so that I can transport it to and from school(so maybe a powerbook?) but I know that is probably not the best choice.
Second, I would like to know what specifications I should be looking for in a computer that will be primarily devoted to FCP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   too slow for FCP

what version of FCP and what OS?
What other apps must this machine run?
    What are your filmmaking aspirations?
If you're shooting DV and are planning to do the offline on your laptop, almost any Powerbook will do the job as long as it's got a 7200 rpm drive. You're not going to like it, though, unless you're limiting your expectations to FCP3 and maybe even OS9. These will do the job for you and for a lot less than $2k. that way you can buy a decent camera.
Here's what people forget to include in their budget:
    1. Protective case ($100 to $400, your laptop is supremely vulnerable.)
    2. Spare batteries ($150 each, you need three if you're doing video)
    3. Backup FW drive and software (My dog ate my computer, professor, I can't turn in my movie.)
    4. Additional power supply (because you won't listen to us about the batteries)

  • Best computer for The Sims 3?

I'm looking at getting a new computer to use for The Sims 3, and I rally have no idea what to look for. The laptop I've been using (Compaq Presario c700, wasn't intended for Sims when I bought it) is incredibly slow when I try playing. I need to be able to install the base game and most of the expansion packs, and not have it run annoyingly slow. I'm open to a laptop or a desktop and would prefer to keep it under $1,000.

    Hello Beccax19,
I regret that your Compaq Presario c700 computer runs slowly when playing The Sims 3.  As you know this model was introduced in 2007 with the Vista OS.  Since there are no recommendations from the experts on this Best Buy Forum, you may want to review the minimum system requirements for TheSims3.
    http://www.thesims3.com/game/systemreq
Vista and some of the other specs for the Presario c700 are included in these minimum requirements.  If you are concerned that the PC is running slowly you may want to do a defrag, run virus scan or have it evaluated.  I like for the members to make HP recommendations; if you want to buy a new HP computer you have good choices at http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemplatemapper.jsp?id=pcat17080&type=page&qp=q70726f63657373696e67746....

  • What is the best computer for Xcode

I have a early 2011 macbook pro and I recently started using xcode on it. I found that my developer applications slow down the computer a lot. I started contacting applecare yestarday to find out how to speed up my computer. They gave me a few things to do to speed up the computer, it did not work. Today I called them back and said that it did not work they gave me a few more things to do then at the end they told me to backup my computer and reinstall the opperating system, and that's what I am doing right now. I don't think this is going to work. So do you have any recommendations, should I get a new computer, is there anything that I should be doing?
Please right back if you have any ansers,
    Thanks!

Xcode should work on any computer.  The slowdown may be due to capacity, which users have found that 85% is the max you can fill the drive before diminishing returns, or third party utilities.
Permissions can also get skewed by tools that ask for admin passwords.  Disk Utility has a repair permsissions function.
Many third party USB devices don't like Energy Saver, and get unhappy when connected while the machine is asleep and slow your machine down.
The hard drive could be dying.     Backup your data frequently, and once it is backed up we can suggest further action.

  • Best computer for logic studio

hi I am running logic express on my G4 & soon i want to upgrade my computer to one which will run logic studio comfortably for the next few years, what i want to know is would the processing power an 8 core G5 be overkill, would logic studio use this processing power or would a quad core be sufficient or even a powerbook. I dont want to overspend but then I want to run the program as smoothly & quickly as possible. thanks

Logic supports multi processing quite well. So you can take advantage of all of the cores that your machine supplies. There are some minor restrictions, but in general it scales quite well. Anyhow, I believe from what you write and that you can actually work on a G4 currently that you'll be more than happy with any recent iMac or Mac notebook. Don't spend your money on something that you don't need. Mac Pros are very fine machines, but they're also quite expensive and way too powerful for the average user.
    Cheers,
    Jazz

  • Best Computer For Premiere Pro CS4

I have used Premiere Pro CS4 on a few different types of computers so far; some work better than others. The one I currently have works pretty good, but when my projects become complex, my system begins running very slow, and the program unexpectedly shuts down very often, so I have to keep saving my project after ever little action. I am currently using a Dell Precision T3500.
I am now looking for a new computer that will run smoothly even with highly complex Premiere Pro Projects, but at the same time I do not want to spend more money than I need to.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any insight I can get on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    -Rick

    Rick,
Which CPU is your T3500 equipped with? How much RAM is installed? How many hard drives? Which graphics card (GPU)?
If you're going to continue using CS4 (which does not take full advantage of systems such as yours), and you have one of the lower-end configurations, a new build is definitely in order: Dell charges you an astronomical price just to upgrade anything at all from the (underpowered) base configuration. For CS4, go relatively heavy on the CPU but not so much on the RAM or GPU.
However, your system could warrant an upgrade to CS5.5 if that system has already been upgraded at the factory with faster CPUs and GPUs or if that system has already been equipped with a hexa-core Xeon W36xx series CPU and you're willing to upgrade the graphics card and/or RAM yourself.

  • Build the best computer for running Photoshop, 64bit 32bit

    Hi people,
the new Photoshop CS4 include new improvement who include support of Vista
64bit and GPU acceleration trough OpenGL 2
ok, so i want build a very fast computer how take advantage of new
    improvement dedicated to photoshop CS4.
So the first question 32(XP or Vista) or 64bit ? have you any bench ?
Vista 32bit support 4GB of maximum memory
    Vista 64bit support 16GB
what i should do care also... ?
    thx people...

    >dpick,
Do you want to share your performance preference settings and which version of PS you are running?
Sorry I haven't replied sooner. I run CS3, and here's my performance settings:
    RAM--3255mb (100%)
    scratch--dedicated 40gb partition
20 history states, 6 cache levels.
As said, I rarely have issues. But I do get white fades once in a while, and when I load 16bit panoramics, the system really slows down quite a bit.
I built this system with an eye towards running Vista x64. There are few motherboards supporting more than 8gb of ram. Most are server boards, and they have their own peculiarities. The few that will support more ram normally require 4gb sticks--good luck with those. However, 8gigs is still very, very sweet. With a quadcore running at 3.2ghz, I never worry at all how many apps I have open, and the only thing that will bring this system to its knees are those dang 16bit panos...

  • Best Computer for Photoshop CS5

I really do not know a lot about computers, anyone out there can tell me the specifics I need to know when purchasing a new computer?

Imagining is all that you can do because you do not use Windows and can never make any sort of intelligent comparison.
Why are you now backpedaling on your previous criticism of Apple? These comments do not seem like you really trust them.
    Reynolds (Mark) wrote:
...Snow Leopard seems to have a whole lot of problems...every day I try and use this damn new re-coded Operating System something new pisses me off.
I've no idea what in the hell they are doing at Apple to have released something so obviously incomplete.
Mark is certainly a fine advocate of Apple.
Which 'honest recommendation' from Mark are we supposed to trust?

Is the reason why you want to look a few years down the line because you expect Apple to patch their 'damn new re-coded Operating System' (as you put it)? Snow Leopard was released 2 months prior to Windows 7 so it seems like they are already on an equal playing field. You can compare right now unless your Mac is too bonked to work right.

  • Best computer for running FCP?

    What's up people...
I am in the market for a new mac to run Final Cut Pro...
At the end of the day I want something that will give me decent render times and also be able to run simultaneous apps like photo shop and logic.
I was looking at a powermac pro with Two 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon.
For 1500.00 more I could up to a Two 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon.
Or I was just told that I don't need all that power and that I should just get an imac or laptop.
There is obviously a large range in price between all of these...
For me, performance always trumps cost. But I don't want to spend a whole bunch of money if I don't need to.
    Suggestions? Cost/benefit analysis?

It largely depends on how much that extra processing power is worth to you.
Do you generally let things render while you get a cup of coffee, or will it make you less productive if you have to wait 15 seconds instead of 10 or 12?
In general faster is always better for future-proofing, and if you can afford it I'd personally go for faster CPUs to deal with the RED footage.
However, I'm sure there are several here who work with RED footage daily who can tell you from experience if the faster processors are worth the big price bump.

  • I have partial sight; what is the best PC for me?

I've heard that Apple Mac is a good option for people with partial sight. Has anyone any suggestions which would be the best computer for me?

    Hi
I am also partial sighted and i use a MacBook Pro 15".
With all iMac's MacPro's and MacBook Pro's it is posible to change the resolution of the display witch allows everything to be inlarged,
    Like so
This is your default Res (1344 x 840)
The Screenshot Above is res (1152 x 720)
As you can see the screen is inlarged and thiis res is what i use.
    You can use (1024 x 640)
This is for people with really bad vision it dose relly depend on your eyesight and how bad it is.
Jsut so you know there is also zoom and aswell as voicweover that you can use
you can change the dock aswell.
if you do to apple logo in the menu bar you find dock in the list hover over and another list will pop up got to dock prefrences and you will find plenty of options to sute your needs.
    sorry its so long
    Hope this helps though

  • The Perfect Computer For Adobe CS3

    Hey everyone, ...
I am planning on purchasing a Canon XH-A1 and I would like to edit using Adobe products; such as AFX, Premiere, Photoshop, and so on. My only problem is, having a slow computer. I wanted to ask some of you experts out there what you think the BEST computer for video editing would need to have. What are the requirements to faster editing. What I mean by that is after you edit something it take a long time to render. And if I will be filming in HD, ... it will be even slower. I was editing something for my church this Sunday and I was working on a "fast" computer, ... with like like 3 or 4 gigabytes of RAM and two duo processors, ... and it would take me about 3 hours to render 8 minutes in SD. After which one of the processors got fried from all the rendering.
I was thinking a MAC would be the best since I have heard a lot of good things about them. And that they have less problems.
Can you guys tell me the best computer or if not the best parts, and maybe I'll make it myself.
Processor(s), Video Card, RAM, and so on...
    Thanks for your time,
    KrickeT

Howard I understand that PCs are more customizable if you wanna call it that but, the problems come where you have a bunch of different parts made by different manufacturers coming together in a PC. Mac makes most of their computer parts therefore are less likely to crash or give you dumb errors, ... I wish I knew about Macs before I purchased my PC.
But I know this local Director and he uses only Macs and they are all like top of the line with huge dual monitors, ... everythings by Mac, ... and all his work is done in HD, ...
He isnt the type of guy that can afford errors during editing or slow rendering. The cool thing about Macs is that you can put up to 32 GIGABYTES of RAM in them, ... PC has max cap. of 4 GB.
Thats what I know, ... things might have changed.

  • Best configuration for video editing ?

my boss wants to buy a best computer for our future projects. we are a small studio so we don't have really big budget. so I am thinking 2.66 cpu, 4gb memory, x1900 graphic card...
we are going to do, some 3D and video editing, and all other graphics stuff.
    any suggestions?
    do I need 8core or 4 core 3.0 cpu?

I don't know if you have seen it
but in [this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5800151#5800151 we (so far two forum members and I) discussed about machine configuration options and other technical aspects!
I wish to insist on a point, do test (if you can) and read a lot before you buy!
    Best,

  • What is the best Mac for gaming?

Ok so as the title says, I was wondering what is the best Mac for gaming, I would like to play at least some old games which I have laying around the house when I'm at the airport or whatever. I read that macs are not that good at gaming but they do work at some degree :P
Also I was wondering, me and my friend were arguing why is a Mac not considered a PC. I my arguments where that a PC means it has all that nasty, heavy, big hardware, with all the cards and stuff and that a mac just has the slick monitor with some stuff in it :P and a keyboard/mouse. His arguments were that even if macs only have the stuff mentioned above, it should still be considered a PC since it is afterall a Personal Computer.
Thanks a lot and hopefully you'll settle my argument and aswear my question.

Best computer for gaming is always the one with the highest specs. But generally speaking, a base macbook does ok. The major piece you need to increase FPS on a mac is a video card though, so generally the Pros or iMacs will be a better choice.
Your friend is right, PC = Personal Computer. Mac's run the exact same hardware as a PC, just run different OS's. But its a term that got misplaced with windows in the flame wars of every forum post. P.S. Mac pros are a tower with no screen, just like the traditional windows ones.
