Best connection between new iMac and firewire MacBook Pro

Hi I'm running a MBP with Firewire, USB (2?) and Ethernet ports. I am soon to take delivery of my shiny new iMac with Thunderbolt, USB 3 and Ethernet ports. What please would be the fastest connection I can establish between the two machines? Thanks, M

Ethernet is your fastest choice - FW800, to be precise.
To transfer from the MBP to the iMac use Target Disk Mode. Boot the MBP into TDM, boot the iMac normally and preferably for the first time. This will put you into the Setup Assistant and let you migrate data from the MBP - Home folder, third-party applications with support files, and system preferences.
If you prefer not to do a migration then you can also simply transfer selected items using drag and drop.
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
  1. Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
  2. Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
  3. All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
  4. Contextual Menu Items
  5. Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
  6. Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  7. OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
  1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
  2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake
      or there's some other problem.
  3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
  4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
  5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and
registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your
desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

  c. MacBook Air - Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and
      wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Different wi-fi speed connection between my iMac and my Macbook Pro (both placed side by side)

I have purchased my iMac and my macbook pro at the same time and now I am facing something which I consider weird. The wi-fi connection speed in my iMac is fine but the wi-fi speed connection on my macbook pro is awful. It works as fine as the iMac if I connect it to a ethernet cable. I have put my macbook pro side by side with my iMac to try it and for my surprise, my macbook pro wi-fi speed connection was still lousy whilst the wi-fi speed connection from my iMac was nice... Does anyone face the same issue?

Non Apple router? Try restarting the router.
If you are using an Apple AirPort base station, try a different channel on the MacBook Pro.
Open AirPort Utility located in Applications > Utilities
Click on the base station icon then click Edit the select the Wireless tab then click Wireless Options.
Cick the first Channel pop up menu, select Automatic
Click the second Channel pop up menu, select Automatic
    Cick Save.
Give AirPort a minute to reset.
If automatic does not help, try a numbered channel from the pop up menu.

  • How can I synch Mail application between an iMac and a Macbook Pro

I want to be able to go back and forth between my iMac and my Macbook Pro using Mail application.
I don't want to set up two completely separate accounts.
Has anyone had to do this and if so, how do I do it?
    Thanks for your help

You can get a Dropbox account, this will allow for 2GB of free storage and you can purchase additional storage if needed. You can find out about Dropbox from their website or read one of the many reviews about them. Their address is:

  • Syncing OS X between an iMac and a Macbook Pro

Hi all. Is there any way to seamlessly sync an OS X installation across an iMac and a Macbook Pro, i.e. application installations, application preferences, data, etc?
If you need more background info: My 15" 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM Unibody Macbook Pro is beach-balling a lot at the moment, and it looks like I need to face up to the fact that I'm going to need more power to keep up with my workflow. I'm tempted by a 27" iMac, but I'm pretty hooked on the Macbook Pro portability in combination with a Cinema Display. It's vital that I can easily grab my laptop from the desk and that when I open it on a train or hot desking that my workflow won't be interrupted by not having the same apps, browser bookmarks, etc. Is there any way to keep things sync'd, or am I better off upgrading my Macbook Pro to 8gb RAM and an SSD?

There isn't one tool that syncs the computers however there are numerous solutions to doing some syncing. I don't believe there is a sync tool for applications though, however you can sync quite a bit. What I use are two solutions, I use Drop Box for files I want synced. This is really simple you simply store the files in your Drop Box folder and it will sync between the devices you have specified. You can get 2GB of storage for free and pay for additional storage.
Next I use SyncTogether to sync:
    Bookmarks
    Calendars
    Contacts
    Dashboard Widgets
    Entourage Notes
    Mail Accounts
    Mail settings
    Notes
    Preferences
You can find both solutions using Google.

  • Between a imac and a macbook pro

Finally someone sent me to the right forum, and I'm happy to be here. I'm strongly leading toward the imac at $1799 rather than the macbook pro at $1999. I'm hoping to get help from someone or someones on how well the imac can handle Logic studio. I realize this is not a logic studio forum but I'm hoping someone can help me out. I've got in my head that the imac though $200 less would be a much better value than the macbook as with those you pay a lot for portability. I've asked this question or one like it in many forums and I guess I'm just trying to get that push to finally get the imac. I hear it's performance is better and I just want to be able to work flawlessly with the Logic. Any help on this topic or ideas for maybe saving for a macpro, who knows. I'm really just trying to hear from some imac users and there experiences with them. Thanks very much

Hello Seattlecal (from 12 miles south):
would be a much better value than the macbook as with those you pay a lot for portability.
You are absolutely correct that you pay for portability. If you do not need it, a desktop (iMac) is the way to go.
I know nothing about Logic studio, so I cannot comment there. Take a look at the specifications for the MacPro and the iMac. I think you will probably come to the conclusion that you get more horsepower - dollar for dollar - in an iMac.

  • How do I transfer files between my iMac and my MacBook Pro using an ethernet cable (not with AirPort)?

Even though I connect my computers with an ethernet cable the files are still being transferred wirelessly.  I can tell because the transfers (usually around 4GB) take a few minutes with AirPort off, but 30 minutes to an hour with AirPort on.  I want to transer the files and still have AirPort on since I work on both computers at the same time and want to maintain the connection to the internet.

Be sure Ethernet is listed first in System Prefs > Network.
If it isn't, click the "gear" icon and select Set Service Order.

  • I can't restablish wifi connection between an C4580 and a Macbook Pro Tosemite 10.10.1

The printer worked both with USB or WiFi till I must change my router. The setup program contained in the instalation disk broke in the final step so I'm unable to configure the wifi.
The set print and scan, Driver version is 5.0.4.
    What can I do?

    Hi @Xoan,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I believe the issues you're running into are because your C4580 doesn't have an HP software package for OS X 10.10, so to reconfigure the wireless, you will have to take a slightly different approach
I'd recommend that you follow the steps in this Re: Photosmart C4780 post that I did earlier this year and those steps should help. To restore the network defaults please go to page 19 of your printer's User Guide and it will explain.
Let me know how things go and if you're able to get things working wirelessly!
    Happy Holidays!
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post resolved your issue, as it will help others find the solution faster

  • I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 backup and created a network with the iMac and now the Macbook Pro cannot get internet.

I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 back up.  I created a iMac network with Airport extreme, but now my Macbook Pro cannot get internet.  any ideas on why or what to do about it.

    Hello 1BillyMac,
It seems you have a network conflict that isn't allowing your MacBook Pro to connect to the internet. This may be caused by both computers sharing identical network settings. You may want to consider creating a new network location on your MacBook Pro to assign new network settings. The following article will instruct you on how to do that:
OS X Yosemite: Add a network location
A network location is a group of network settings
A network location is a group of network settings for your various network services (Ethernet or Wi-Fi for example).
If you often change network settings, you may find switching between locations quicker and easier than repeatedly modifying individual groups of settings.
For example, you might want to make a location for “home,” where you connect to the Internet with a telephone modem, and a location for “office,” where you connect to your company network and the Internet using Ethernet or AirPort.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.
Click the Location pop-up menu, choose Edit Locations, then click Add .
Enter a name for the location, then click Done.
Enter settings for each network connection service you want to use in that location.
After you create your locations, you can switch all of your network settings by clicking the Location pop-up menu and choosing a different location.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

My iPhone 4s will not connect with my home WiFi network. I have ios6 on my iPhone. The connection was working perfectly before I updated my IMac and my MacBook Pro to ios 10.8.2. I have had ios6 since I purchased the phone a couple of months ago. It searches for a network and finds them, but when it asks for my password, it will not accept the password. Have never had this happen before.

  • What is the best way to keep an iMac and a MacBook Pro synchronized?

I've got an iMac and a MacBook Pro.
I need them to be synchronized daily (Data, documents, contacts, etc.) but I can NOT use the Cloud because of customer preferences.
I've recently bought a Time Capsule.
Can this device be used to keep both computers synchronized in an easy and non time consuming way?
If not, is there any App like "Beyond Compare" for Mac?
    Thanks.

    Morning Acousticare,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Thunderbolt cables should not exceed three meters for maximum performance. The Apple Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2.0 m) is two meters in length.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

  • Can I sync the same iTunes library on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro?

Can I sync the same iTunes library on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro?  I've been connecting my iPhone to each and it's causing problems for me with them being different, despite my purchases always being under the same Apple ID.

The easy way to do this is to keep the library on an external drive which you can plug into either computer.  Of course this isn't always the desirable solution.  You can try routinely copying the library from computer to computer though this gets tiresome.
    Of possible relevance:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202 - You can manage your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers as long as you have set the device to "Manually manage music."  -  e.g. adding music from a second computer to an i-device.

  • I'm debating between the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

I'm debating between the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

It appears that is up to me to pick up the mantel and defend the 17" MBP (As an owner of two of them).
Yes it is heavier that the 15" model, and by an enormous 16 ounces!  Not a day goes by that I contemplate acquiring a fork lift to move that obese beast.
Oh that 17' screen, the Cinemascope of laptops.  The extra space adds to the efficiency of use and has an edge when viewing DVDs or when converted to a HD TV.  (I will grudgingly acknowledge eww's recommendation to check out the high resolution properties prior to purchase)
It has a express card slot that allows for eSata connections (No mere SD card slot).  Most useful when one has to transfer large file to and from external drives.  In addition it has three USB ports rather than just two (I probably should not let it be known that I have yet to use all of the simultaneously).
    Off my soap box.
Is it worth an extra $300?  That becomes an individual choice.   Either way the final decision is going to be a good one.
    Ciao.
