Best connection w/ iMac?

I am soon making the transition from a PC to a new iMac. I have a 40 GB 4th gen click-wheel ipod. I's pretty sure that I can connect it to the new iMac using USB or a firewire - is either one superior? Is there one that I should go with.
Also, should I bother reformatting my ipod for Mac (currently formatted for Windows). Is there any advantage to having it formatted for my iMac? Thanks!

Yes you can sync with either USB or Firewire. If you already have the cable, then I would go with Firewire on the Mac. If you only have the USB cable, then I wouldn't run out and buy the Firewire cable as there is not huge advantage of FW over USB for an iPod.
You can leave it formatted as Windows if you like. Useful if you want to use it on both types of systems. About the only thing I have noticed using a Windows formatted iPod on a Mac (my 80GB is DOS format, my 30GB is Mac, both are used on my eMac) is the Windows ones takes a little longer to mount and show up in iTunes. But other than that, they perform identically on the Mac.

    Hello quinstar,
It sounds like you would like to use either your Personal HotSpot to AirPrint from your MacBook Pro or use an Airport to do so without internet access to the home. According to the following Featured Discussion you very well may be able to use AirPrint with Personal HotSpot:
HT4356 Can I use personal hotspot as wifi to connect printer?
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4007254
Also, the Airport products to not need an active internet connection to set up a home Wi-Fi connection so that is another option as well.

  • How to connect my Imac to my HDTV

I have a 2007 aluminum Imac and a 50 inch 1080p HDTV. is there anyway I could connect my Imac to the tv and control it via wireless mouse and keyboard... The rear connections on the tv are 3 hdmi, 2 component, s-video and AV.. Please let me know what is easiest, fastest, most reliable and produces the best picture.. Thanks so much!
Also I might get the new 13 inch macbook pro, what would I need in order to connect that?

I am not familiar with this new mini-DVI to HDMI cable. Sounds interesting. There is a Mac user reporting an issue in trying to use one of these in the Intel-based iMac display forum. He is using a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and an HDMI to HDMI cable plugged into a HDMI port on his plasma TV and nothing is happening. But he is also reporting the same issue with mini-DVI to VGA adapter and an VGA to VGA cable plugged into the VGA port on his plasma TV. So the problem may not involve this mini-DVI to HDMI adapter.
I use Apple's mini-DVI to DVI adapter connected to a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable plugged into the HDMI port on my LG LCD HDTV with great success with my new Early 2009 Mac mini. The Apple mini-DVI to DVI adapter came with my Mac mini and I bought the Belkin DVI to HDMI cable at the Apple Store when I bought the Mac mini. Both are also available from the Apple Store online for US$19 each.
The MacBook Pro has a mini-DisplayPort. Apple also has a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter for US$29. So that could also connect with the Belkin DVI to HDMI cable.
I did Google for a mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and there are a few 3rd party venders of this adapter as well.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If this program doesn't work, open  > About this Mac and tell us the generation of your Mac. AirPlay Mirroring needs a Mid 2011 or newer iMac, so if your iMac is supported, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion

HP 8600 911g - connected to Imac 24; Maverick OS; how does one change pages printing order

    Hi Dave 6373,
I understand you have an Officejet 8600 that you're using with 10.9 and would like to know how to change the order the pages print in. I will do my best to assist you in resolving this issue!
From my browsing our 10.9 Mac I was able to find the setting I believe you are looking for. You will want to open the program/document you're printing with and select File and Print. You will then see a screen similar to the one in the screen shot below. You'll want to select Paper Handling and then under page order change it as you wish. You can also save this as a preset by clicking where it says Default settings (next to Presets: ) and choosing the Save option.
Hope this helps, have a great day!!
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post resolved your issue, as it will help others find the solution faster
Click the “Kudos Thumbs Up" on the right to say “Thanks” for helping!

  • How can I connect 4 iMacs to 1 thunderbolt storage device

I work in a small photography studio. There are 4 of us with (thunderbolt compatible) imacs and we are tryinng to find a solution that we can access photos and videos for editing that are on one thunderbolt storage device that is connected to each of our imacs. I have only been able to find it possible to connect 2 imac but not more?

I'm pretty sure Thunderbolt-attached drives work the same way as any other kind of external direct-connect drive, which is that they can only have one attached host (ie, one computer that sees it).
Your best bet may be to keep the drive attached to a single Mac and share it out through regular Apple file sharing. By default, an admin login on that computer is able to see all external drives, but you can use the File Sharing system preference tab to control who can read and write to which shared folder.

  • 2wire wireless- Airport Extreme- ethernet connection to iMac - how?

I have AT+T's DSL router that has wireless capabilities (802.11g, not n). I'm trying to use the new (802.11n version, although I'm not using n for this obviously) airport extreme to extended my wireless network to give me a wired access point to my old iMac (no wireless card).
So far the best I can do is get the airport extreme on the wireless network with a green light, but I can't get a wireline connection to land on this network. I'd even be ok with the airport extreme was a router that made the wired ports on a different network that would then route out to the wireless network.
When I connect a wired device to the airport extreme, it comes up with a 169.254.94.121 address. The wireless network is 192.168.1.x. The airport extreme does get it's 192.168.1.68 address on the same network as the 2wire. I've even forced my iMac into having an 192.168.1.80 address, but it can't ping the airport extreme's 192.168.1.68 address, so obviously the airport extreme isn't behaving how I would like. I even fired up WireShark on the connection, but it looks like the airport extreme won't even talk to it in any way; I was hoping to find the IP address on the wired side of the AX.
Basically I'm trying to use the airport extreme completely backwards from the usual setup. Wireless to wired instead of wired to wireless.
    Here's what I have:
Airport Extreme - Join a wireless network, security is WPA2, and it's on the network (as seen by 2wire)
Can I get the wired connections on the airport extreme to be an extension of the wireless network or even as another NAT routed connection?
DSL router (2wire) that sends wireless-> Airport Extreme (join a wireless network) -> wired connection to iMac.
Why am I doing this? No phone line connection even close to my iMac.

I had to jump straight into the manual configuration, but it does show Wireless mode: Join a wireless network. And the 2wire shows it as a device connected to that network.
    Connect using: Wireless Network
Ok, I'm still a bit confused. On the AEBSn, the only options available for Connect Using (found on the Internet > Internet Connection tab) are: Ethernet or PPPoE; For Wireless Mode (found on the AirPort > Wireless tab) are: Create a wireless network, Participate in a WDS network, Extend a wireless network, or Off. Unlike the AirPort Express or Time Capsule, there should NOT be an option for "Join a wireless network."
So at this point I think it is extending my wireless network. I just can't figure out how to get the wired ethernet ports to be on that same network.
Regardless, when configuring for "Join a wireless network," the base station would join as a wireless client, not as a means to extend the wireless range of the exiting wireless network. Since this is not the way to set up a WDS, the Ethernet ports on the AEBSn would not be enabled for sharing Internet connectivity.
WDS is not an option as the 2wire router doesn't seem to be able to handle that.
Then it appears that there will not be an option to create a WDS no matter which vendor's router you try to configure the 2Wire to work with. Sorry!

  • How to connect my imac to my tv ?

How do I connect my Imac to my TV ? Is there an easy way, Any body can help? I'm new to the Mac world.
    Thank you in advance

What do you want to achieve? If the goal is to use the TV as an external monitor then get a mini display port to HDMI, DVI or VGA depending on the connections the TV has. You can find each adapter at the Apple Store either online or at a store close to you.
Also  PLEASE complete your profile, we need this information in order to be able to assist you. Click the the Your Stuff link in the upper right and then click Profile and fill out the pertinent information.

  • How do i connect my iMac to my tv to see movies with wire

how do i connect my iMac to my tv to see movies with wire

    Hey rodskc10,
Thanks for the question! Based on the iMac model and TV you have, you’ll need to pick up a compatible cable. There are a few options that can be found on the Apple Online Store:
Mac Cables - Computer Audio & Video Adapters, Network Cables & More - Apple Store (U.S.)
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/cables#!
For example, if you have the latest iMac and an HDTV, a mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable should do the job (you’ll connect this to the Thunderbolt port, which is backwards compatible with mini DisplayPort).
For additional information, see this article:
OS X Mavericks: Use a television as a display

  • How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.

How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.

You need to find out what video out you have on your iMac, and what kind of video inputs there are on your TV.
It will help to know exactly what model iMac and exactly what make/model TV you have.
Depending on the exact model iMac you have, it may have miniVGA, miniDVI, miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt output.  Your TV may have composite, S-video, component, DVI, VGA or HDMI inputs.  Once you confirm what kind of ports your iMac and TV have, then we can probably suggest the correct cable or adapter so you can connect them to each other.

  • Can anyone please help me connect my iMac to my TV?

How can i connect my iMac OS X to my sony bavia TV?
Its an iMac OS X version 10.5.8 The TV has an hdmi port but the iMac doesn't have an hdmi port. But the TV & the iMac both have a USB port.

If your iMac has a MiniDisplay port then you need a MiniDisplay port to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable.
