Best Cooling Pad for Desktop Use

If anyone has an opinion, please weigh in. I'm curious if anyone has ever used one of those many laptop cooling pads/mats out there. I'm considering buying one for desktop use with my 17" MBPro. When running intense apps for hours on end (FCS, Adobe everything, StarCraft 2) I occasionally push it to the brink of freezing and nothing will save it except a hard-reset.
So if you've ever purchased/used on of these, which are the best? Consider price to be no object. Thanks!
Chris

@Scott - Been in post-production a long time friend. Laptops are everywhere. Get with the future.
@MacMedic - Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely be looking in to it.
@Lyssa - It's only been recently that my Mac has been having the over-heating issues. I'm thinking it's just a combination of getting old and summer months with no A/C. With regard to my specs you're somewhat close. It's the MacBookPro2,1; Introduced October 2006 discontinued June 2007 and I was unfortunate enough to have purchased mine April 2007 shortly before they were phased out. It has the 2.33GHz Core-2 Duo with 3GB of Memory.
Used to run all my programs just fine with the fans kicking into overdrive, but lately things just get sluggish when it's hot. I typically only have one program running at a time, occasionally two (like Final Cut and After Effects) but not for long periods of time. With the exception of StarCraft 2 the amount of free ram is still in the 100's and I've got just over 100GB free on a 500GB HDD. It's not slow for things like Word Processing, Browsing the web (unless I run into something Flash based in Safari ha ha) or doing Mail.
Anyway, thanks for all the help. Keep the suggestions coming in.

  • Best Cooling Pad for rMBP 15

What's the best cooling pad for my 15 rmbp?  I know apple laptops require a certain kind.

Apple's documentation suggests you keep your portable on a flat hard surface, to allow air to circulate and cool. Putting it on a blanket, your legs, a pillow or other soft surface would defeat that.
That being said, when my son had a problem with overheating his MacBook - he damaged the fans by spilling bourbon on it - he used a bag of frozen peas. He didn't tell me what brand.
    Best of luck.

What's best is relative to your expectations.  In my opinion, you don't need one.

  • What is the best cooling pad for a MacBook Pro

I use the laptop in a variety of settings.  It gets really hot on my lap and was wondering if anyone has used a cooling pad they like for this problem.

I'm sure someone will jump in with the best of the best. FWIW the MBP is not a laptop it is a notebook. And as you've probably read in your User Guide does not belong on your lap.

  • Best cooling pad for Macbook pro 15" with retina (2013)?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook pro 15" with retina display, bought in 2013 and I started playing Starcraft on the machine. It becomes extremely hot, almost unbearable to touch and after searching online, I've been told that overheating of macs is relatively common. It is also extremely noisy. Firstly, is this something that I should be worried about, i.e. is it normal? (it is still under warranty) Also, I was looking to get a cooling pad- which one would you recommend? I couldn't find many macbook pro w/ retina display specific ones, so I thought maybe a generic laptop cooling pad?
There are so many to choose from and I don't know where to start! Perhaps the Cooler Master NotePal X3?
    Thank you for your help!

    is it normal?
Is the game rated for the GPU on the Mac (look at the game's specs)?  If not, then I would not run it on that Mac.
If it is rated for the GPU on the Mac, then no, it is not normal, and I would have the machine looked at, after running the hardware test that came with it.
See my tip about MacBook Pro heat:

The GPU is the Graphics Processor Unit.
A cooling pad might help, but it might also mask a more serious problem.      I've used this cooler on Powerbooks before:
    http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Notebook-Cooler-USB-Powered/dp/B0000BVYTV
But only outside warranty.   Mind you, because of the heat, sometimes some of the darker markings on the edge of the cooler and come off on the bottom of the notebook.  Hence why I would only use it outside of warranty, since such marks may make the AppleCare representative think you might have done something to damage it.

  • Antec Cooling Pad for MacBook Pro

I bought the Antec Cooling pad with two fans for my MacBook pro, when it woudl charge and working it got pretty warm. I have to say, having the fans running under the MacBook dropped the temps significantly, I think. On average I would say around 10 degrees C is what I am seeing.
I"ve got iTunes, Word, Mail, Safari, Firefox all running with the temp showing 48 C on both cpu...give or take a degree flux.

Count me as another happy Antec Cooling Pad owner.
At home, where I primarily use the MBP for OSX, I have the iLap, which is a great but passive cooling stand for use on the table or my lap. Works fine, lowers temps by an average of 3-4C.
However at work I often have to run WinXP on my MBP. That puts it in full torch mode, for whatever reason. I bought an Antec Cooling pad for work, and I don't have the figures (as I don't have a temp monitor on the Windows side) but I would estimate that it's cooled it at least 10C, maybe more. Routinely the top of the MBP where my palms rest would get past warm, almost to hot, and the speaker grills would emit hot air, a lot hotter than when running OSX.
After I bought the Antec, and put 4 small rubber stoppers on it to elevate the MBP about 1/4" above the aluminum surface (which did seem to increase airflow), now the MBP running Windows feels just like when it does on idle running OSX.
Two thumbs up, and a hearty recommendation for anyone who has to use WinXP on the MBP or who constantly has the MBP on very high load.

  • I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.
This might be of some interest to you at this time: Life After MobileMe.

  • Can I use Type -- 'convert to outline' in Illustrator on Typekit fonts I've 'designated for desktop use'? I've not been able to as of yet.

I'm trying to print vinyl letters for a gallery I'm a member of and love the Cronos Pro regular font. i've designated this for desktop use and created 24 name files at 200pt. The person working with the vinyl asked if I could 'convert to outline' possibly to make the font a bit larger, I don't really know. When I tried to do this, I found that choice grayed out on the type menu. I am wondering if this means the Typekit fonts 'designated for desktop use' simply do not have the permission to be 'converted to outline'.

Cutting always requires proper paths/ outlines. This has nothing to do with the font or large format printing per se. Beyond that there should be no limitation in using fonts - as long as you can mangle them in AI, it means that somewhere those outlines exist internal to the program so the type can actually be rendered. Whatever prevents this may more likely be inherent in how you treat your text. you would have to provide more specific info on that. Either way, ask in the AI forum for more detailed answers.

What is best track pad for Mac Pro laptop with mountain lion

Honestly, the one right in front of your keyboard. It's hard to do better than that one, and the Magic Trackpad is just an external duplicate of that. In fact, my dad has one for his iMac, and I seem to recall that there are one or two things I can do with my built-in trackpad that he can't do with his Magic Trackpad... though my faulty memory means I couldn't tell you what those things are at this point.

  • Caflish Script Pro Bold no longer available for desktop use. What changed?

Caflish Script Pro Bold was available at one time for desktop use. Now it seems to only be for web. How can I get this font back?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Apple has not disclosed their policy decision making to the public.
I verified that the 7200 RPM hard drive is not available for the 15" from the Apple Store build to order. That's not to stop you from getting your own 7200 RPM for a 15". However, we don't know if the 7200 RPM meets the heat and/or power requirements for the battery to maintain a decent amount of charge when not powered by A/C. There are guides online for do-it-yourself installation on http://www.ifixit.com/ http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ but there is no guarantee that if a problem happens that the warranty will still be valid. I'd take it to an authorized service technician to have it installed and verify with them they can do it without violating the warranty.
Also the Terms of Use specifically forbid us discussing policy on this section:
    "2. Submissions
Search or browse for existing answers before you ask a question. Someone else may have asked your question — it may save you some time.
Stay on topic. Apple's discussion forums are here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, don't add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
That Apple rumor you saw on another website.
Discussions of Apple policies or procedures.
    Speculations/rumors about unannounced products.
The status of your 1973 MG Midget restoration."
Now one thing to note, for hard drives larger than 100 GB, which this 7200 RPM is, 5400 RPM drives typically are about the same speed as the 100 GB drive because the tracks are closer together. They don't need the 7200 RPM to keep the same seek times. So consider that before worrying about whether or not the 7200 RPM is available.

  • MacBook Pro Cooling Pad for Gaming

Ok, I'm having problems with MacBook Pro overheating when I'm playing a game and the FPS drops very low, so does anybody know the best solution for this situation?

Cooling pads will not work as there are no ports to remove hot air on the bottom of the laptop. The only vents on the macbook/macbook pro line are in the back side of the computer. As there are no cooling pads that have functions to suck hot air/flow cold air to that specific vent, all conventional cooling pads are useless. the most you will do with normal cooling pads/gaming colling pads, is possibly lower external temperature by 2 degrees at the most.  unless you manage a way to function the computer without a bottom case, use a desk that has a built in liquid nitrogen colling spot, or drill holes into the bottom of your laptop, cooling pads are useless for macbook pros.
sorry to tell you this, but trust me, i've gone through this with many people and genius' and 1800 apple reps.
best advice, use your laptop in a well ventilated area and air out your vents with dust spray cans regularly.
oh and do not use on your lap. dust is composed of fibers, skin and other foreign objects.  using it on your bed, your clothes, etc increases the chance of dust build up inside your computer.  use on a solid surface. Glass desks (like i have) are able to disipate the heat best IMO.
