Best corded optical mouse for 20$ and under ?

I am going to start looking for a new corded optical mouse before long. There’s nothing wrong with mine but i want one in reserve just in case considering its two years old and still going strong.
I see a lot and  I mean a lot of corded mice, most are well beyond my budget. It would have to be one that is a ‘ plug and play’, no software required kind of mouse.
I have my eye on getting another Dynex since I have had no trouble with that company before.

Rocketfish is good too

  • Best bluetooth laser mouses for macbook ??

    Hi,
Could anyone suggest me couple of good bluetooth laser mouses for macbook ?
I wish to have these features
    1).No transceiver
    2).It should support back button
    3).Battery Life Indicator (preferable)
    4).Price under 50 $ ..:)
Anyone using "Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 " ??.. i read that mac users are having problem with using back button in this particular model .. is that true , if so, any workaround to overcome it ??
    Thanks ,
    Nelson

Hey Nelson, I happen to use a logitech bluetooth travel mouse. I think the model is a M-RCQ142. It needs no transmitter, or receiver to be hooked up to the laptop. You just turn it on, and boom, you're working. It was under 50$, around 35 i think. It has a back button, its white, and works great. The Mac salesman at CompUsa sold it to me when i bought my Mac, But i think you should be able to find it at Best Buy or online.

  • Optical mouse for 10.6

I've been trying various LASER mice for months, and I just can't get them adjusted to the feel I like. I love the OPTICAL mouse I use at work, on a Windows machine. Then I read about laser mice being more sensitive than optical mice, so maybe I just like a less sensitive mouse.
But I'm having trouble finding an optical mouse that says it's compatible with Snow Leopard.
Any suggestions? I would prefer wireless, but a wired USB mouse would be OK. Also, preferably one that is NOT designed for laptop or mobile use.

I haven't tried the Magic Mouse, but I replaced the Mighty Mouse the same day I bought the iMac.

  • Best Flat Screen Monitor for G4 and iMovie?

Since spending so many hours in front of the computer monitor editing my iMovie project, I have developed serious neck, shoulder, and arm pain and my back doesn't feel so great either. I feel this is directly related to the angle of my monitor and the amount of space it takes up on my desk. It crowds the keyboard to the front of the desk, leaving no arm support, and is not adjustable, adding to the neck problems.
I'm afraid of getting the wrong thing, though. I don't want to buy a monitor made for Macs and then find it is "not for G4," or works fine for internet and word processing but iMovie projects look crummy on it. What do people recommend? Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Cornelia,
I can give you just some "basic" advice:
for a normal consumer, a TFT (flat) monitor is as good as a CRT (tube); in technical terms, high-budget CRTs are still "better", in meaning of "color proof", but hey, we talk of miniDV compressed NTSC (=never the same color)
iMovie Master Dan has on his excellent website some tipps:
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6008.shtml
for calibrating monitors esp. for video usage.....
but, as we all know here, the final quality can only be judged on a TV.......
because on tech principal, a TFT has less "flimmer" then a CRT.
a TFT can be digital connected.
see, if your G4 has a socalled dvi connector - if so, get a TFT with same dvi input! means, you work on a straight digital level, no digital-analog-digital conversion.
think about widescreen TFTs (Apple's), think about size (old man as me prefers 19", which has same res as 17" but is just bigger) - me personally prefer as big screens as affordable! (ever seen 2x 30" in reallife?? <sigh>)
finnally: EVERY TFT can be connected to a Mac, by vga or dvi (mentioned above) connector.
    happy shopping!

  • Advice: best way to crop for games and animation

    Title may be misleading:
Constant workflow block I run into, after creating an image that needs to be dissected for animation and games, where each part will be rigged into an animated composition (think character with limbs being separate images). It is common to make a rough draft sketch, then save the pieces as images, connect them in the animation app, and come back to make adjustments to the pieces (within the whole).
I used to cut the pieces into separate layers, crop the image to the pixels on that layer, save the image, and then undo the crop- repeat for each piece.
Downsides to this is that the crop can be different each time after making slight adjustments, causing issues with the rigged animation. Also, if for some reason the crop isn't undone history can be lost and you may have just lost the whole thing.
So I started converting the pieces to smart objects, this creates a file that is perfectly trimmed to include all pixels- but alas, editing the image occurs within the individual layer, and so it is not convenient to see how the editing will effect the whole.
    Following me?
Any tips from others who have done this sort of thing in the past?

To avoid the risk of messing up the history I would recommend using a Script to save all Layers to new, trimmed files, sort of like an adaption of »Export Layers to Files «.
    Maybe someone over at
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_scripting
could help you find an existing Script or to create one.

  • Optical in for LPs and Cassettes?

    Hi Folks,
I have a receiver with optical out on it and was wondering if I could use that to capture LPs and cassettes to the computer? Currently, i'm using the griffin imic which is slick, but wondering if the optical cable will garner better sound results?
    Cheers,
    Keebler

It should work but it is unlikely that you will here any difference unless you now have a problem with hum. The optical connection would avoid any ground lops, so is less likely to generate any hum.

  • Best keyboard and mouse for typesetting and design (not sure where else to put this)

So, we got a new Mac Pro. I don't think this keyboard is going to work so well for typesetting. Too little travel on the keys I think. And the wireless mouse.... it's OK but I definitely need something different.
    Pros and Cons
Apple keyboard: Pros - The function keys at the top for controlling audio, ejecting the CD tray, screen brightness etc.
Cons - You have to hold the "fn" key and hit F12 to get to the Widgets. Didn't have to do that with our G5 keyboard. Metal body.... I'm CONSTANTLY shocking myself on this thing from the static of the carpet. Key travel.... they don't go down very far. Not sure if that is desirable or not.
Magic Mouse: Pros - Multitouch surface is nice for moving left and right when zoomed in on something or moving an image around. The other multitouch gestures are pretty cool as well. It's wireless, that's nice. Havent had one of those before.
Cons - It just feels like crap in my hand. It doesn't have the standard "hump" that most mice have to fill up your hand.
So... what do people think? Ideas? Thoughts?

    TwitchOSX wrote:
Well... turning on the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" makes the F12 go to the Widgets panel and F11 makes all the windows flow out off the edges so you can see the desktop, but then nothing else works so the F3 key that makes all the windows small and shows the different desktops doesn't work, the brightness keys don't do anything, the audio keys don't do anything...... argh. It's one or the other!
Not true. The setting reverses the function of the Fn key. So to adjust brightness you have to press "Fn + F1/F2", and without Fn it does what F1 ought to do. (Barring what John says; the system takes precedence in stealing functions.)
There is no way to get what you want: both sets of functions at once. Perhaps you could have a custom keyboard made, with two rows of function keys. (In the Good Ol' Days of WordPerfect 5, you could buy a custom keyboard with four rows of function keys, one for each of "Plain", "Alt", "Shift", and "Control" modifiers. Only for the truly lazy, too wary to press-and-hold a modifier key for a quarter of a second.)

  • Best mac compatible mouse for photoediting?

I am new to photoediting and just purchased Lightroom 5. I own a MacBook Pro and am wondering if those of you who have tried different mouses over the years have a favorite one best suited for editing. I am not a professional, just an enthusiastic beginner.
    Thanks!

I don't think any particular mouse is better than another for photo editing. You probably want a two button mouse with a scroll wheel but this is the basic mouse anyway. Some people like more buttons to attach keyboard shortcuts and the like but it's never seemed worth it to me. Go cheap and simple is my recommendation.

  • What is the best external Optical Drive for my Macbook?

I was wondering if anyone has purchased an external CD/DVD burner for their Macbook?
My internal Super Drive in my Macbook will only play DVDs not CDs. And my discs always get stuck.
I am looking for an external drive that will read and write CDs and DVDs. Something that I can boot my Macbook from if there is a need.
    Thank you

If your MacBook is still under warranty, contact Apple. There's no reason to accept a partially operating Mac. If it isn't under warranty you might still want to contact Apple and relate your problem - you never know, you could get lucky.
Essentially any FW or USB external drive is going to work - head over to NewEgg and search for external DVD burners. The great thing about NewEgg, besides being a pretty decent company to deal with, is the user reviews. They are blunt, honest, and pretty useful. You might also want to check out http://xlr8yourmac.com/ for user information. It is the go to place for upgrades.

  • Whats the best external drive setup for FCP and accompanying software?

With all the external Hard Drives out there I am hoping that other users could suggest the best options when setting up FCP to work with an external drive. I am working with both SD and HD and am planning to use DVD Studio, Soundtrack Pro along with Motion and AE.
With all the info out there claiming to be the 'best' it gets a little confusing. I bought a 2T WD HD with Firewire 400, 800 and eSATA connections. With the amount of footage I have to capture this wont last long. And the intention is to archive this footage and making it easy to access in a year or two.
Which is best type of connection? Firewire 800 or eSata? Any Suggestions as to a really good external hard drive set up that I can add to as finances allow?

Not quite sure what this question has to do with Qmaster, but what the heck.
The simple response is get the fastest and biggest external you can. If you are getting a drive mechanism without swappable disks, purchase 2 mechanisms - 1 for use when editing and the second for backing up. Purchase a 3rd drive to back up your system drive.
If you go the swapable drive bay route, you'll pay more for the mechanism but you'll recoup the cost as you can purchase additional bare drives for a fraction of the cost of another whole mechanism.
The fastest connection speed is esata then FW800 then FW400. USB is not appropriate to editing video (but can be used for simple backups).
If you have the resources, something like a Caldigit HDOne is a high performer. If that's out of your range, look into their VR line or something from MacBurley. Granite Digitial also makes good basic devices.
    Have fun.

  • Best Video File Type For iTunes and Xbox360

I have an extensive digital library and I am trying to have one file for all devices.
What I am looking to do is to have one file that can be managed by iTunes, play on my iPhone and stream to my xbox360 via Connect360 and look good. File size is not a concern. I dont want to do multiple encodes.
The important features are one file playable by iPhone and Xbox360 via Connect360 that can be managed by iTunes. I would like the video to be of very high visual / audio quality.
I use handbrake to convert video files.
My question is, what is the best file type for this scenario? I have used mv4 but more recently I am using MP4 with 264...
Again, one file to rule them all....
    Thank you in advance!

Old thread for others, but,,... It isnt necessary to convert a bunch of files, if you have Plex on your pc, and on your iphone/ipad.
I would have spent a month converting the terra bytes of all the video files that I had but i just airplay and my Plex app to send nearly any type of file on my Imac directly to my Apple tv.
It converts on the fly any file that isnt supported.

  • Best display calibration unit for mac pro under $100?

I have come to the conclusion that calibration by eye is a suckers bet.  So looking at calibration units, for example spyder 3 express.
Wondering what units work best with mac pro (2008 8 core).
    Thanks for replies.

My experience is that it comes down to multiple factors. The monitor, the application you're using, along with the color profiles you're using.
I use a 30" Dell display hooked to a 5770 graphics card and I make sure the color profiles are consistant over the applications I use.
At one stage I bought a Huey Color Correction device. I eventually put it on the shelf and forgot about it.
My conclusion is, after years of consistently good color printing results, is that if you've got the components right like a good monitor and working with consistant color and press profiles then the "Expert Mode" is Apple's Color Calibration in System Preferences is completely adequate.
I spend every day color correcting in our graphic design business and we get terrific, predictable results.

  • Best presets in PE10 for MJPG and MPEG4AVC

    Hello,
I'm looking for the best presets for the following sources:
    1. MJPEG from Canon cameras, 640x480, square pix, 30fps
    2. H264, MPEG-4 AVC (avc1), 1280x720, square pix, 30fps
I found a few presets but they don't match the above perfectly but I recall from previous PE versions that even when different resolution was selected (720x480) I could create output file with res 640x480 and square pixels.
Just to clarify - I'd like to create different projects for videos 1. and 2. If possible I'd like to have one project with mixed content of 1. and 2. and output format of 2. but this is not that important - if not achievable a separate 1. and 2. are still OK.
What will be the best output codec and format to use? I'd like to share the video on Win PC and looking for best quality/size parameter.
Thank you in advance for any comments/hints.

I was exploring the preset issue more and more and was looking for a way to modify the existing presets to match my sources.
I have found that presets are stored in: \Adobe PE 10\Adobe Premiere Elements 10\Settings\SequencePresets\
The preset files are saved in XML format. Analysing the files I have found the following section:
    <VideoFieldType>0</VideoFieldType>
    <AudioTimeDisplay>200</AudioTimeDisplay>
    <VideoTimeDisplay>105</VideoTimeDisplay>
    <AudioChannelType>1</AudioChannelType>
    <AudioFrameRate>5292000</AudioFrameRate>
    <VideoFrameSize>0,0,640,480</VideoFrameSize>
    <VideoFrameRate>5080320000</VideoFrameRate>
Other parts of the file are not really relevant, most of them are comments and description.
The above example is for 640x480p50
I couldn't find relation between videoframrate value and fps so I went ahead and checked other profile files.
    Found out the following:
    PAL
    DSLR
    640x480
    50
    50
    5 080 320 000
    1280x720
    24
    23,976
    10 594 584 000
    1280x720
    24
    24
    10 584 000 000
    1280x720
    50
    50
    5 080 320 000
    1920x1080p
    24
    23,976
    10 594 584 000
    1920x1080p
    25
    25
    10 160 640 000
This was still not meaningful but I noticed the higher fps the lower value we get.
On top of that 10 160 640 000 divided by 5 080 320 000 gives exactly 2 which is the same as 50fps divided by 25 fps (corresponding fps values)
    I was wondering what will we have for 1 fps (or 1 sec) - so 50 x 5 080 320 000 = 254016000000
    The same for 25 x 10 160 640 000 = 254 016 000 000
So what is that magic number?
I have found the following post http://forums.adobe.com/thread/445538
    3.Todd_Kopriva,
    Adobe Employee
    09-Dec-2010 09:28   in reply to dcp28
    Report
XMP stores time values in a unit called "ticks". The conversion factor is 254,016,000,000,000 per second. This value was chosen so that we could have integer representations of all times in all of the common frame rates.
Now having this knowledge I have made a copy of one of the presets and modified the video frame rate value to match my 30 fps.
I have divided the magic number by 30 and got the following: 8 467 200 000
I made a new project with this preset, it seems PrE recognised it correctly and now my project is set to 30fps.
I'm going to test and compare the results what if I do the same project with 60fps.
    regards
