Best course of action - Patching

I have a SP 2010 Dev environment that blew up.  I had to rebuild a new server, naming it the same thing as the old.
One of my Dev then reconnected it to the databases.
Since i didn't have the old server to look at, i used one of the primary prod servers to determine the sp patch level.
I made a mistake, and missed SP1.  I installed SP1 using an account that had dbo permissions on the SQL server, and had administrative permissions on the local server, but was not the correct admin account for the farm.
The patch installed fine with no errors.  I then realized my mistake, logged in with the right admin account, and ran the configuration wizard.
It fails on step 2.  I tried running it again with the first account but that fails on step one because it's not the right account anyway.
So, I tried this..
PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures
which passed all but 4 items.
then this
psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -wait
which passes all but two item
Then re-ran the configuration wiz and it still fails on step 2 with this error.
Failed to initiate the upgrade sequence.
An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeException was thrown.  Additional exception information: Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeException' was thrown.
Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeException: Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeException' was thrown.
   at Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPManager.BootStrap(Guid sessionId, SPUpgradeOperationFlags flags)
   at Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.UpgradeBootstrapTask.Run()
   at Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.TaskThread.ExecuteTask()
The happens a few times in the log.  No other information.
When I look at the db status in sp I see a pretty big list of databases for various project.  About half of them say this
Database is too new and is not supported
about 25% of them say this..
No action required
and another 25% say this
Database is in compatibility range and upgrade is recommended
So, i'm not sure what to do.  Add remove programs won't let me uninstall this sp1.  It looks to me like there have been sites maybe ported from
production with different patch levels, for development purposes, some of which are higher patch level and some lower (am I right?)
I'm trying to figure out the best course of action without having to rebuild this system.  My initial thought is to install sp2 and upgrade all of
them but that may cause a problem if they try to port data back to production after developing for it.
Thoughts?

Hi Statistic,
According to your description, my understanding is that you got an error when you upgrade SharePoint 2010 to a new server.
Please open Start->Run-> type ‘regedit’, and browse to "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\14.0\WSS" in the registry  and update the value of the SetupType key to "CLEAN_INSTALL".
Then install the MS Chart components:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14422 .
After the above, run the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard, compare the result.
More information, please refer to the link:

I hope this helps.

  • IPhone 6 plus screen cracked. Please advise best course of action.

Hi all, hope someone can help. My son has a iPhone plus and has just cracked the screen. He is very careful with all his devices and has never broken any thing like this before hes very careful. But what I'm asking is what is the best way to get this fixed. We are in Northern Ireland. Please help any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

    Hey SciGibson,
Sorry to hear about your son’s iPhone. The best course of action would be taking it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to get it fixed. Take a look at the link below and put in your location in the Service section to get you the closest shop to you to take care of this.

So, about a week ago my macbook pro started having lots of issues: wifi connectivity, slow performance, sound issues, spotlight wasn't working. After going through the issues with apple support, they decided the best course of action was to erase the hard drive and do a reinstall. Since I have a recent backup this seemed like a good enough option. They were kind enough to send me a copy of the snow leopard disk to do the install since we couldn't get it to complete through the disk utility. Not sure why, since it says we are fully connected, it just never completed.
Anyway, so now that you have the background here is the new issue. The macbook pro keeps spitting out the disk I'm trying to install from. Disk utility and using the 'Startup Disk' function from the apple menu doesn't read the disk.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this vexing problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Jeremy.Laurin,
have you tried agb76’s approach here?

  • IPad mini Cannot Connect to ANY network, best course of action?

iPad mini was working until around 6 PM, where it just stopped connecting to wifi and internet just stopped.
Tried all methods that was discussed in the past post, which included resetting network setting in Settings section, hard reset, putting the iPad in airplane mode and out, etc.
One method I haven't tried is to do is reset network. Problem is, the device is tied with Find my iPad, and in order to wipe everything, I need to sign in to iCloud, which I cannot, since the internet would not connect at all.
The connection is not limited to just my home wifi network, but it would not connect to my local Starbucks, school wifi, or even my friend's house.
What would be the best course of action? The iPad mini is out of warranty, and it was purchased immedietley after it came out, and the nearest Apple store is 70 miles up north in Portland, OR.

Tried it via DFU mode, still giving me "Unable to join the network" error.
The Apple Store is 70 miles away up north, but the weather condition is making it difficult to travel. And I kind of need the iPad within next couple of days......
How much would the repair estimate be if the wifi chip needs to be replaced?

  • Hard drive crashed, best course of action?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. I have not had problems with it before this, but last night I opened it to work on something and it was frozen with safari open as is left it. I had a cursor and it's wasn't showing the spinning wheel but nothing was responding (ie the dock wouldn't pop up and quitting/minimizing or clicking anything on the top bar didn't work). I decided to restart manually with the power button. When it powered back on it showed a blinking question mark folder. I've looked this up and tried suggested fixes. Disk utility doesn't show my hard drive so I can't repair it, which I have gathered from other posts means my hard drive is probably dead. I did not regularly do any sort of manual backups, is there a chance I'll be able to salvage my stuff? What is my best course of action here?
Also, not as important but I'm just curious as to what could have even caused this as it happened out of nowhere.
    Thanks!

seen countless HD "die out of nowhere"  nature of the beast.
Grab yourself a new 1TB HD (not Western digital) and install same.
If youre not up to doing this, make an appt. with your Apple store for HD replacement.

  • My Mac is dying - what's the best course of action?

My computer has been running poorly for months. Today I tried to run Disk Utility and I was informed my hard drive was failing and DU couldn't be run.
Technically, I can't really afford any action right now but clearly I need to do something. In your opinion, is it better to scour Craigslist for another Mac, or bring it to a repair shop and see what can be done? I would need to replace the hard drive of course, but I would also need to replace the CD Rom reader because that stopped working awhile back.
    I have a 2006 Intel iMac running 10.4.8.

    Hi,
The first thing you should do, if you haven' already... is make a Clone Backup to preserve all your date...

  • 10.6.8 software update won't reboot. It replaces the Apple logo with a circle with a diagonal line though it. What's the best course of action from here?

I used software update last night and my iMac didn't restart afterwards. I spun the little "dashed" wheel for a bit and then replaced the Apple Logo with a slashed circle symbol. I"ve tried several fixes without success and would like to know what my best approach might be.
I've tried to boot into single user mode but that failed the same as above. I've tried disk verify and repair permissions using Disk Utility, again without success in fixing the problem.

    com.apple.iokiast.IOUSBMassStorageClass
is a Apple kext file and likely necessary.
What you can do is backup your Users folders to another external drive (not TimeMachine) first so you have your files outside of TM. Disconnect this drive for safety reasons.
Then hold c and boot off the OS X 10.6 installer disk and simply reinstall OS X on top of the installed version, then use the 10.6.8 Combo Update here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
That should replace the troubled kext file with a fresh version.
This shouldn't bother your files or third party programs unless they have kext files or other "hooks" into OS X, if these programs fail, then just reinstall them from fresh sources and/or update to reinstall their missing parts.
Consider cloning your boot drive to a external HFS+ journaled formatted drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • IPhone 5 submerged in water, but did not turn off/will not turn off. Best course of action?

My iPhone 5 was just in the sink under running water and mostly submerged for a few seconds. It stayed on with all buttons working, clear screen and clear camera lens. I have tried to turn it off, but every time I try it reboots. I removed the SIM - it was completely dry, but since I can't see the inside I'm assuming there's definitely moisture in there.
I currently have it in an airtight bag with silica gel, and I'm planning to leave it for a day or two, but it's still on. Should I keep trying to turn it off, or is it better for me to just leave it? I don't have the necessary equipment to remove the battery, unfortunately.

Last attempt to turn phone off actually did turn the phone off. Not going to touch it for a day or two, and hoping for the best.

    Hello,
Just to add to PieterV's excellent reply, these days, pretty much all anti-malware programs resort to using some sort of technology hosted in the cloud, whether its looking up sites to see if they are malicious before allowing a connection, checking the "reputation" of downloaded software by its age and prevalance, and so forth.
Symantec had a great presentation at VB2009 called "Using the wisdom of crowds toadress the malware long tail" which explains hows a reputation system works, with a follow-up on its effectiveness presented at VB2010.  This year at VB2011, there was a very interesting presentation from Trend Micro called "File-fraction reputation based on digest of high granularity" that showed how a cloud-based system could be used to used to detect recurring segments of malicious code to detect newer malware.
That said, I think it's important to use a mixture of techniques for detection of malicious code, both online and offline.  As PCBruiser noted, if your Internet connection is unavailable or, even worse, compromised, then you cannot rely on a service based solely on having a "known good clean and working" Internet connection.

  • What is my best course of action?

    Hi,
In 2007 I upgraded to the Leopard but did not upgrade ILife or IWork to 09. So as it stands my OS is currently up to date, but not those programs. What I want to know is do I purchase the upgrade to Snow Leopard and on a different occasion buy the other programs at another time (which in the long run is more expensive) ? or Can I purchase the box set? I hesitate to get the box set because the information clearly states if you're still running Tiger, then you would get the box set. I was hoping to find a nice neat little scenario four: ie If you're running Leopard and have not upgraded ILife or IWork, then you can do this... LOL... oh well... so I'm hoping I can get an answer or a suggestion. Thanks in advance!

I would get the box set IF you will use the features of the newer iLife and iWork applications. If you are satisfied with your current versions of iLife and iWork, get the Snow Leopard upgrade. The box set should work just fine to upgrade from Leopard.
    Best of luck.

  • Best course of action for lost iPhone

    Hi
Can any one advise the best security strategy when you loose an iPhone 3GS.
I have it password protected and the data on it is of my prime concern.
It seems that if II wipe it I can no longer send messages or attempt to locate it.
Also if someone finds it and immediately takes the sim card out does it mean none of the remote security functions will work.
It seems that the best thing to do is immediately wipe it upon finding that its missing else the opportunity to do this in the future will not be possible.
if you later find it and its wiped what options do you have ?
    Any advice ?

I lost my phone last year. It was on O2, here the steps I did (it workd for me or perhaps I was lucky):
1- report to police. got a report. call O2 immediately to block the phone.
2- took report and called O2, who blocked the sim card/phone and black listed the IMEI phone. In the UK it is a brick. o2, vodaphone, orange and T mobile share the same database for blacklisted phones. they also kept my phone number and gave me a new sim card with the same number.
It is a crime in the UK to unlock a blacklisted phone (if they can).
thief tried to activate with as many sims as he can (there is a password so he can just do a hard reset. However all my data are on sd card which is encrypted yet with another password 256 bit encryption), meanwhile the phone was sending data to the operators (he tried orange and O2 and T-Mobile). Fat chance.
He tried to unlock it with a street vendor, street vendor found out (here i was lucky) it is blacklisted, called the police. Thief caught and I got the phone
But by that time I got the Iphone (was great excuse to spend the money
