Best CS5 memory settings for MBP dual core with 8GB RAM?

The Adobe page on this suggests doing some tests (groan). But why, when there's a forum chock full of folks who've already done some..?
So, what settings have you found to work best?
Any other tweaks?
BTW I also have CS4 running in Boot Camp. if anyone can recommend the settings there I'd much appreciate it.
Cheers!

> But why, when there's a forum chock full of folks who've already done some..?
Because every composition has different requirements, every computer system is different, and every person is willing to make different trade-offs. There is no way to give a general recommendation if some people are working on web videos with hundreds of small motion graphics layers and other people are working on IMAX movies with only a few layers.
This page is the closest that you're going to get to a general recommendation:

  • 13'' dual-core with 16gb ram vs 15'' quad-core 8gb ram -- ram vs cores?

    Hello.  I am at a point between choosing a 13'' dual-core i5 with 16gb ram vs the 15'' quad-core with 8gb ram - both retinas.
I will be using photoshop and illustrator while uploading/downloading large files constantly.  After much headscratching I almost decided on the 13'' i5 because from my experience, RAM limitations is where I usually run into problems, and don't see the extra price of i7 worth it when it is still a dual-core.  For the same price I can get a 15'' quad, but will be stuck with 8gb ram.
I don't care about the screen size, I have good eyes and the weigth trade-off makes this a non-issue.
I'm thinking about down the road, as either of these I'm sure will be fine solutions.  I'm just wondering where does the edge really come in this case?  Ram or processor / cores?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your reply tjk, of course with 16gb on the 15'' for $200 more  I'd have easier time, but in this case I am comparing a refurbished - the lowest 15'' 16gb I could find would cost $500 more, I just can't do it.
I should make clear that this particular comparison between 13''w/16 and 15''w/8, they are the same price (the 13 being new) - which is why I'm stuck.
To rephrase - for the same price - which will I regret less in 4 years?
As a side note, I can't believe I'm even thinking about paying this much money for something that is not upgradeable, but that's another discussion entirely.

  • Shared Memory Settings for Oracle - Machine Spec Specific?

    Hi,
I've been asked to apply some shared memory settings for Oracle on a new V210. The DBA has asked that we simply copy the settings from one system file to the new machine.
My problem is that I'm not entirely sure whether this is the best course of action. The machine the settings are taken from is a E280R with 2GB Memory and 2 x 900Mhz processors. The new V210 has 2GB and 2 x 1.33Ghz.
Surely the memory settings should be different? Don't worry, I've copied the relevant settings - not the whole system file!
    Thanks for any advice,
    John

    Hi John,
Normally, When you want to apply the shm. We normally for production machines , consider 1/3rd of your physical memory. For eg. If you have 16gb of physical memory, I would consider around 4gb of shm_max.
    Thanks,

  • What are best Mpeg encoder settings for making DVDs?

In switching from PP1.5 to CS3 the procedure is different for making DVDs and we have to encode mpeg files that later get picked up by Encore DVD build proces. What are the best mpeg encode settings for making the DVDs?
    Thanks,
    Chuck Taylor

    Question:
If you are doing a video that is small enough that you are not worried about size, what is the absolute best quality encoder settings? Would a Continous Bitrate result in a higher quality file generally? VBR is for trying to make a smaller file I assume.
I'm frustrated with even white letters on black titles that have some flicker. I just don't seem to get the smooth quality I desire.
Should I look at a different encoder?
If you output PP3 to an AVI and then import it into encore, isn't there a reduction of Q. due to the save to the AVI file?
    thanks.

  • Best in-Aperture settings for iPad

    Hi,
Does anyone know what is the best in-Aperture settings for optimum iPad photo quality ? (Maybe able to do a 2x zoom without pixelating)
Currently my previews are set to *"Fit within 2560x2560"* and Quality is set to *"10 High"*
However, in this settings, i realized that iTunes automatically "OPTIMIZES" the pictures.
Therefore, has anyone found the perfect settings ?
    Regards
    Nycky

Doesn't matter, iTunes will still Optimise them. The process doesn't just resize them it also converts them to the format used on the iPad.

  • What are the best imovie, mpeg4 settings for making dvds?

What are the best imovie, mpeg4 settings for making dvds?

    • iMovie'08 to 11
    - Share to Media Browser - AND as Large (or Medium) - HD or other resolutions degrades the final result
iMovie'08 to 11 are not the tools of choise if quality is important as they all degrade the picture by discarding every second line when going from, Event's to Project's and this can not be mended.
iMovie HD6 and FinalCut delivers 100% of what any DVD-Authoring program needs.
    • DVD is as standard MAX - intrelaced SD-Video - and can not be any better than this
    • iDVD does only care about TIME / Duration as
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    • iDVD Does Region = Zero (to be played everywhere)
    • Frame rate - DVD can be in two types PAL (25fps) and NTSC (29.97fps)
If Your material is 30fps then keep to NTSC (29.97fps), if 25fps keep to PAL.
One can feed iDVD the other frame rate - BUT RESULTING DVD WILL BE BAD
I use JES_Deinterlacer (free on Internet) to convert all material to the same and final frame rate
    • NTSC - US etc
    • PAL - EU etc

  • What is the best iTunes Equalizer settings for Bose QC15 Headphones?

What is the best iTunes Equalizer settings for the Bose QC15 Headphones? An image of those settings would be great.

I'm a bit of an audio geek, so I can tell you that YES whatever sounds right is what you want, but NO those settings are not very good. The general setting is "OK" but the values are extremely out of range. Take that setting and reduce the distance between the sliders and you're getting there. Look for example at how the other iTunes presets are made, the don't go that far from the horizontal middle, and for good reason.
When you play a recorded song, the song has usually been put through an extensive process of mixing, EQ and mastering before you got it, in order to get the best balance of all frequencies, to ensure the best sound accross a wide range of speakers and headphones, and to ensure the most important details and instruments are audible when played together.
All speakers are different, and that's where the idea of an EQ for the listener is introduced. The idea is to tweak the overall sound from your music player (iTunes) to compensate for the strengths and weaknesses of your speakers. Which to be honest, is a bit much to expect form a typical music consumer.
The iTunes EQ has a set of horizontal lines representing 3dB (volume steps) each. In my experience you should not boost or cut more than 6 db at the most - and that's a lot! I stay at around 0-4dB. The extreme options are there to cut noise from bad recordings or emphasize a detail you can't hear very well.
    So here's basic EQ lesson:
The EQ represents the range frequencies in sound that the human ear can hear. Actually they go beyond that - most people cannot hear the far left and right frequencies. The range of frequencis start at "deep" or "low" frequencies at the left (bass) passing through the Midrange (midtones) in the center, to the (treble) at the right.
Your speaker has a limit to how many frequencies it can play at once before it starts to lose detail - meaning one sound will drown out in order to make room for another. So don't over-EQ your sound or it'll ruin it.
    How to tweak an EQ:
    1) Start by playing a well-produced piece of modern music  - it'll most likely be well mixed and employ a wide range of frequencies. I'm into heavy metal but for this I'd probably go with some average pop music, because metal is so noisy it gets hard to pick out the details.
    2) Set you EQ to FLAT - zero all accross the board. It'll sound pretty flat and boring unless your speakers are very "flavoured" or "colored" already.
Sliding any of the EQ bar up, will increase or boost the volume of the frequency the bar represents. You can't really add frequencies that aren't there already - you're just adding noise in that freqeuncy and that will "fill up" the available frequencies on your speaker, causing that "drowned out" effect I was talking about.
Instead, slide them down from the center, and you're cutting the volume instead. This is better because it'll leave more "room" for the other frequencies. You can always use the Preamp slider at the end if you're worried about loudness (but I wouldn't).
    3) Start by tweaking the 500 and 1K slider. This represents the middle of your ears' range of hearing and the most noticable change. It should most likely go downwards - this will take the "canned" sound out of your music and that'll be apparent quickly. Go ahead and slide that down as far as -6dB.
    4) Now work outwards from the center forming a "v" shape, where the top tips of the V end at the 64 slider and the 8k slider. The very far left and right sliders (32 and 16K) should dip down again to about 0bB. Trust me, these are almost non-important in most music. You can tweak thos last if you feel it's needed.
    5) now it's time to start playing round with the V shape. Go ahead and try sliding the sliders a little up or down between 125-250 and 1K to 4K. You may find that some need to move a lot out of the average "V" shape before the sound is good. This is what my iTunes EQ settings ended up looking like for my Motörheadphones "Motorizer" headphones:
    Hope it helps.

  • Which is the last most stable version of Firefox for non-dual-core CPUs? Thanks.

I run a Dell Pentium 4. I found newer versions of Firefox to be deadly slow and extremely unreliable. I find 3.0.19 to be the last most stable version for non-dual core processors. Absolutely no problems. And no endless remoting. However, there is no further safety support for this version. Thus...
Which is the last most stable version of Firefox for older non-dual-core CPUs?
    Many thanks.

Thanks but this isn't what I need. I need a URL that directly downloads with wget so I can automate it. This takes you to a page that contains links. I'd have to scrape the page to find the one I want, and while that isn't impossible it is a huge over-complication for something that should really be pretty simple.

  • Memory Settings for Reconciliation

    Hello,
What is the recommended memory settings for the application server when reconciling ~400,000 users from LDAP and a Database Table.
I have noticed that IDM 5.5 uses more memory than IDM 5.0. Using various JVM memory settings with IDM5.5, I always seem to get an OutOfMemory error up to 1GB of memory. With IDM5.0 I could set the memory to 512MB and the recon for LDAP and the Database Table would run to completion w/o an OutOfMemory error.
    Thanks,
    Manung

Forgot something that might be helpful. Configure the Schema map to only include the limited set of attributes needed for identification and correlation/confirmation. This speeds up reconcile and also consumes less memory.
E.g maybe you only need sn,givenName, mail to correlate and build up the initial virtual index. After that is done, expand the schema with all attributes needed.
Well... my 2 cents worth of input.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
