Best developement environment/tool for older computer

I got an older laptop I am looking to use to do some programming while I am away from school. I was wondering if there were any programs out there that will run on a pentium 150 mmx laptop with 32 megs of ram. I use IBM's visual age for java at school but that sucker is huge and actually started on my laptop but takes forever to do anything. I tried borland's j builder and that was also very slow. I was looking for a program that had a tag completion feature and also by chance had some sort of visual composer like IBM has. I looked at real java and JCreator. I like JCreator cause its simple and works very well on my computer but I am looking for a little more features. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

Thanks... I have used text editors before and actually am currently using them now. I just think that I'm more productive using the little shortcuts built into those larger IDE's. I was just wondering if there were any that would still run on my old machine. If not I'll just have to stick with the text editor I am currently using. Thanks

Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer? ---- Apple care suggested using iCloud for a backup to my documents. I do not have an iphone, ipad or laptop. Just an iMac. Nothing to share the data with.
Now I am unable to access some of my documents on my computer and saving documents is cumbersome because it always wants to save it in iCloud, not my computer. The documents I am unable to open are my old MS-Word. One is a macro enabled word doc. I am using os x mountain lion.
After over an hour chat with apple care, the issue is not resolved. I did not have more time to resolve the issue today and it will be continued next week. Per apple care, I do not have any documents in the iCloud however I am almost at the free capacity with contacts and documents.
My question is -- If I purchase backup from a clould provider - other than apple, back up my files in documents in their cloud (make sure I can open them) and then delete the link to iCloud. Would I preserve my data? Has anyone tried this? I am open to suggestions.

Not really. You can store "Documents in the Cloud" but this applies only to documents created by Pages, Numbers, Preview, Keynote, and Microsoft Office documents created on your computer stored in iCloud's "iWork". Within that limited purpose, iCloud works very well.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "purchase backup from a cloud provider" but if you're considering a service such as Carbonite, I don't advocate any of them. To back up your Mac, use your own backup device - Time Capsule or an external hard disk. It's inexpensive and reliable: two elements essential for a backup strategy, that no subscription service can offer.

Best video capture tool for Panasonic AG-DVX100A

I'm trying to decide on the best video capture/ media converter tool for my Panasonic AG-DVX100A. The choice is between the Grass Valley ADVC 110 Media Converter and the BlackMagic Design Video Device for Mac OS10. Has anyone used either/both of these. What advantages do each have over the other? The Grass Valley ADVC 110 Media Converter requirers firewire.
I have and use the Blackmagic Video recorder which is USB based -

BUT it converts the video to H.264 format which is a very difficult format to edit in. It is primarily designed to allow you to load video on to your computer for viewing, posting to you tube, or other very simple uses.
If you intend to edit these files with iMovie, you might be able to get away with it (although importing the files will be slow), if you plan to edit with Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro you will need to convert them to an editable format.
You might look at taking your camera somewhere to a facility that can properly capture the DV material on your Mini-DV tapes and put them on an external hard disk for you.
Then you could plug in that disk on your computer and obtain access to the files that way.

Unless you plan on using a very old version of After Effects, which will cause a bunch of other problems on Windows 7, you simply need more RAM. 3 GB is barely enough to keep Windows running smoothly, let alone running a RAM-hungry app like AE. Your first priority is to put more RAM in your computer.

I think MP4 is better quallity.
To copy a DVD: simply use Toast (maybe withe popcorn, but I don't use it).

anti-virus is not necessary unless you have Windows installed on a seperate partition. Security tools aren't necessary either. You are on a mac, not a pc. Totally different worlds. You can download Disk Doctor from the app store for 99 cents. And if you insist on an a/v program, install ClamXav (it's free-do a google search for it)

What is the best method to query for older GPIB equipment with ID? and newer with *IDN?

I am writing a test executive where it needs to scan the bus for support of older (HP/Agilent 856x series) and newer (Agilent 440x and 444x series) spectrum analyzers. *NOTE* I originally posted this question in my NI Community blog. I apologize for redundancy but someone recommended I re-post here.
The first frame looks for the newer analyzers with *IDN? then if that fails sets the boolean in the error cluster to TRUE. The next frame then uses the error cluster's boolean to decide whether an older HP analzer is connected instead using ID? query. Disclaimer: the second frame is a clone of the ID query of the 856x Initialize VI. I just want to use what already worked - no reinventing the same wheel?
But, lo and behold, it doesn't work as expected. If I have the frames in this order and connect a HP8563E the GPIB time's out error. This code works with the newer 4407 or 4440 since the *IDN? query passes and the second frame is not executed.
Now, when I move the second frame to become the first frame and run it with HP8563E the query works but will have a GPIB timeout if I have the 4407 or 4440 connected.
Long story short, how do I support both older GPIB ID? and newer IDN? in my code?
I have attached the query VI created with LV 2012.

Formatting external HD for older computer

I had a PC formatted hard drive that I reformatted for Macintosh, to give to a friend of mine. She has an older mac than I. I have a macbook 10.5.6, and she has a G3 laptop with 10.2 (I think it's 10.2, but it could be 10.3). It is a small hard drive and runs on a USB cable.
After I formatted it, it ran fine on my computer, and I even copied some pictures on it for her.
But the hard drive won't mount on her desktop. It runs, it has power, it has a power light, but she can't access it. She can't even see it with Disk Utility.
Did I use the wrong option to format it? I used Disk Utility, and it gave me options, like Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (whatever that is), and other options I forget now. I chose the plainest one, and I forget what it was called, because I can't see the list of options now that I don't have an external hard drive attached.
But, in anyone's opinion, if I reformat it using another option, will it work? Thanks for your suggestions.

There are two things to consider:
The partition scheme (APC for PPC; GUID for Intel)
You probably used GUID which won't work on an older PPC computer.
I am not sure about the formatting. HFS+ may be too new for a G3 running 10.2
I would do this:
Have your friend format and partition the drive pn her machine, and then you take it back and if you can see it and access it normally, copy the file onto it and that should work.

Stand-alone or Creative Cloud for older computer?

I'm trying to decide if I should buy the stand-alone Lightroom 5 or the Creative Cloud version. I'm worried since my computer is older it won't meet the minimum requirements for any future Creative Cloud auto updates and I'd be stuck with software which wouldn't work. Would the auto-updater recognize this before updating the software to a new version or should I just buy the stand-alone product? Thanks!

What are the best optimization & cleaning tools for Mac OS X?

I found a great app called MacKeeper, but it cost $500!?! I have OnyX, but it not so good because it just clean your mac and has given my mac some problems.
I really want to fix and clean my mac and give it top performance, because my windows 7 is now faster than my mac in boot camp, and my mac boot up speed is so slow, it actually slower than my 7 years old windows xp laptop!

It takes 3 minutes to get into the log-in screen. My apps bounces for 20 secs.

It does sound like you're having a performance problem, but using a "cleaning tool" to do things like clear caches, run the periodic scripts, etc without a specific reason for doing so is not the right solution. You could just as easily break things worse without solving any problems. It's like firing multiple shotgun blasts into your walls, while blindfolded, to try to solve a mouse problem.
When I scanned my computer with AppKeeper, it said 1700 useless junk files and 12 performance problems.
Without knowing what those are, we have no idea how legitimate those claims may be. Some AV software will label "tracking cookies" as a danger when they are not. As sad as it is, some software companies will play up "problems" in order to sell software to solve those "problems."

I would like to buy an older version of illustrator and photoshop for my slightly older cojputer:

I think that CS 2 creative suite would probably be okay, but I would be really happy to have an even older copy that ran really fast. I have win XP. Does anybody know if it is possible to buy such software now?

Very risky to buy old versions. Make sure you know who you’re buying from and that you’re protected in case it’s pirated or previously registered software.
Adobe does allow for transfer of licenses but this must be done by the seller.

Best Video Editing Tool For MBP

Hey Fellas recently i switched from a windows pc to MBP. I have a small business of making motion movies for various clients of mine. On windows based platform i used "Pinnacle Studio 15" for editing my videos And it worked fine there. Now as i switched to MBP, i also transformed to pinnacle studio for mac. But there seems some kind of error when i go make movie option, the movie doesnot proceed at all.
Really frustated for this kind of problem as i have tried many times and also replaced the clips many times but its doesn't work.
Please help me, fast answers would be really appreciated as i have many more projects to cover up.
