Best device for personal media streaming??

Hello i am pretty new to the mac world. I Have about ten years worth of digital media ( mostly home movies ,pics and mp3s) that i have brought with me over the years and can't  seem to find a device that will allow me to save and stream this content  without filling up the hdd on my mac. My main goal is to access my content on my apple tv. Any thoughts ?
I currently have the following devices
Apple tv 3rd gen
macbook pro
ipad air
2 iphone 5c

A Mac Mini makes a mean little media server.. plus player.. you do not need the latest.. indeed the latest is a pain because apple stopped our ability to upgrade.. a 2011 or 2012 model will generally work great.. the later having a big advantage of USB3 ports so you can plug in a cheap and large (4TB are easy to find) external drive. They are quiet and very low power consumption.. you can have it plugged straight into the TV or stream to the ATV..
Some models of the 2011 might be a bit cheaper and have proper video chip onboard.. this was discontinued on the later 2012. But you have slower USB2 ports.
And then you can run plex or itunes or whatever you want. It can also act as a main server to the whole network.

Hi - was looking to buy a macbook air soon but wanted to get it with lion software....anyone know when that is available and second question is what is best software for personal money management that works with lion.....use quicken now   thanks

    quicken should work with lion.
Quicken Essentials will work with Lion.  Most people that have used Quicken for a while (i.e. Quicken 2007) have found that Quicken Essentials isn't much better than a basic spreadsheet.  It is a significant step down from previous versions and does not offer many of the features previously offered.  Right now, it seems like the two most common options are iBank and MoneyDance.
Frankly... this is a major opportunity for these companies.  The largest commercial distributor of this type of product has been Intuit (Quicken).  That makes it hard for any other company to get any of that market as so many people were already using Quicken and may have had years of data stored in it.  Now, with Quicken effectively out of the picture, it's a great chance for another company.  Just imagine if iPhones were suddenly off the market.  That would give other manufacturers a tremendous opportunity since they wouldn't have to fight an up hill battle against a market giant.

  • Best device for external monitoring? Sure to be a popular topic.

Any thoughts on the best device? I am a one person shop and am very pleased with the update. I like X and have been using FCP since version 1. I had a Kona 3 and was very pleased with the product so I will most likely purchase the new io XT. Customer support was great. And the party AJA threw at NAB wasn't bad either. Now that I cut on a an iMac, I have been waiting for this update. I see that Blackmagic has a device at a much lower price point. Are you getting what you pay for? What product has the best features?
I would really appreciate any thoughts.
    Cheers.
    Tom

    Hi,
it is not necessary to enter the exact amount for external service in PM order ,
exact amount must be confirmed during service entry sheet ml81n
or it also be adjusted during miro ( invoicing )
and for prininting , most of the part as u said are covered in standard printing of Maintenance order, PR and PO
otherwise there must be customized PO printing in ur organisation that can be change if ur requirements does not meet

  • How do I prepare my iMac for sale? And best practice for transferring media to a new system.

This is my first time posting in a forum, so I will apologize in advance if I'm doing something wrong. I've tried to search for a very clear answer to my questions in the existing discussions, but have not had much luck.
I ordered a Macbook Pro today and would like to sell my current iMac to supplement some of the cost. I purchased my iMac in March of 2011 with OS X Snow Leopard preinstalled. I've since updated to Mountain Lion. When my computer came in it did not have OS DVDs, so I am not sure exactly how to take it back to factory default and remove ALL of my information safely in order to prepare it for sale. I'm afraid to tell it to format if I am going to need a boot disc/drive to reinstall the OS. I've been trying to research all day and have learned that I will not be able to sell it with the current OS, only the one that came with the computer at the time of purchase (to the best of my understanding).
Secondary to all of this, I have a question about backing up info and porting it to my new system. I have run the Time Machine backup to my external hard drive. However, I DO NOT want to port it to my new MBP as an image of my past machine. I did that when I got my iMac from my old MBP and my iMac thinks it is a MBP (MBP EFI/SMC Firmware Update Icons in my system utilities folder as well as identified as a Macbook Pro on my network). I've never been able to get all of these things to go away and I feel like it's chewing up hard drive space for no purpose whatsoever. I also worry that it could create system issues that I'm just not savy enough to catch before they are beyond control. That being said, I'd like to begin fresh with my new MBP. What is the best method of bringing my photos from iPhoto and music/movies/books/etc from iTunes to my new system? My word documents are easy enough...I keep 3 flash drives updated with them at all times.
    Thanks in advance!

Whoever said you can't sell you iMac with the current Mac OS X is wrong, I believe.
    Unfortunately, it is not wrong.
Any OS purchased/obtained at the app store - as is the case here - is not transferable. The license is tied forever to the Apple ID used to obtain it. The SLA states that the seller needs to erase the drive and reinstall the original system.
    @ Kamikazwe:
You can call Apple and give them your serial number and they will send you copies of your original disks at a nominal charge.
You do need to use your original Snow Leopard disk, boot from it, erase the drive, and reinstall Snow Leopard. The buyer of the machine will need to purchase his/her own copy of Lion or Mountain Lion with their own Apple ID or they will never be able to reinstall or update the OS.
    SLA Excerpt:
    3. Transfer.
    A. If you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party, provided that:  the Apple Software is transferred
together with your Apple-branded hardware; (ii) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, printed materials and this License; (iii) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or
other storage device; and (iv) the party receiving the Apple Software accepts the terms andcconditions of this License. For purposes of this License, if Apple provides an update (e.g., version 10.8 to 10.8.1) to the Apple Software, the update is considered part of the Apple
Software and may not be transferred separately from the pre-update version of the Apple Software.
    B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware before doing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating system software that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) and permanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that:  the transfer must include all of the Original
Apple OS, including all its component parts, printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the party receiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to
accept the terms and conditions of the Original Apple OS license.

  • Best Practices for sharing media with iMovie and FCPX

So I've a large iMovie Events directory, and would like to use that media with both iMovie and FCPX projects.
I'd rather not duplicate the media, so would prefer to import as references into FCPX.
The dilemma is that I see that it's possible to modify or move media from within the iMovie application, and therefore break the reference to that media with FCPX.
I only see two options:  (1) Never Ever modify the location/name of media in the iMovie Events file (even from within the iMovie app) since I would break an FCPX link if that media is referenced, or (2) always import (copy) the iMovie events into the FCPX Event Library making an independent original so that I can confidently operate on those media files in either application.
I'd surely rather not have to do (2 )(e.g. doubling my storage demands) to gain the flexibility of using either application to edit the video, but really don't want to live with the restrictions of (1).
Thoughts / Solutions?  What might you consider as options or best practices?

Unless there is some other reason, users should own the right to share their mailboxes - it shouldn't be something that demands administrator management (if only so that the administrators aren't swamped by user requests for sharing their mailboxes).
For true shared mailboxes, when the mailbox is created, full access is granted by an administrator.

  • What is best "size" for Share- Media Browser then iDVD?

What is the best "size" to "Share to Media Browser"? What is the closest equivalent to the format that iDVD burns movies at?
I don't want to waste time using Large if it converts it to something like Medium uses. There is nothing on the list about DVDs. Just iPods, .Mac, YouTube, Apple TV, computer ...
Note: The current video camera I have is a standard definitive Sony TR730 digital video camera. Most of the time our relatives borrow our video camera to take stuff. None of them have an HD video camera.

I also know that iMovie '06 is a dead product.
Of the dozen or so people that I know making movies with iLife 08, all use iMovie 06 for most of their movie making.
Please bear in mind I am NOT an "iMovie 08 hater" (I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06). iMovie 08 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
I use iMovie 06 (with iDVD 08) if I think I will ever put a movie on a DVD.
Remember that Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!).
Also when you install iLife 08, iMovie 06 is not removed from the computer. Previous editions of iMovie were always un-installed when upgrading in the past. Apple leaves iMovie 06 on your system, because they want you to have it.
Want a DVD, use iMovie 06.
    Want YouTube, use iMovie 08.
    Just my 3 cents (inflation).

  • Mac Mini - best option for adding video streaming to existing HDTV setup?

Hello, new to the Forum but not to Macs - currently enjoying my 1yr old iMac, far cry from original 128k Mac I bought in 1984...
I am interested in adding streaming video capability to my home theatre setup, which consists of a Pioneer PRO-FHD1 50" (full 1080p) monitor, Rotel RSX1057 receiver driving 5.1 surround, and Samsung BD-P1200 BluRay DVD player that is not internet-capable. Options are: replace the Samsung with an internet-capable BluRay player, add an Apple TV, or go for a Mac Mini altogether. I am leaning towards the Mac Mini as I might as well have a full-fledged computer that does what I want, and a lot more. However in reading some of the posts here I see that some people are having all kinds of screen resolution and signal issues, others seem to have it sorted out. Any advice appreciated.

    Welcome to  Discussions!
The mini as a media center is an excellent idea in general. You've already gathered that the most critical concern is the compatibility of your particular TV, although it isn't really as bad as it may seem here. Remember, judging based purely on the threads here is like making an assessment of the viability of the human race by looking at patients in hospitals.
If you can research a little to see if anyone has tried hooking your model of TV up to a mini already, you may find out if it should work smoothly or not. Once that matter is addressed, I can attest to the great results of using a mini as a media center. I Strongly suggest Plex as a great application to enhance the mini as a media center.

  • What is best laptop for personal use ?? my requirement is gaming and whole day personal usage ?

am fed up for buying a new laptops ?

These would be okay for gaming and still stick under the 1000 buck mark
The thing I look for in a laptop (that I want to game on) is a discrete graphics card notably either ATI or NVIDIA ... if it says Intel Graphics i stay away from those... they just aren't going to handle gaming that well.
These laptops are intel based processors that I kinda lean toward these days - you may get better value out of an AMD based machine... I personally like intel a little better right now for processors.
Memory - I just look for 3GB and above.
these really only apply to Best Buy... other places are going to have different models

  • Best setting for personal web upload

    Hi all,
I'm trying to export a video for my personal web upload.
I exported a clip of H.264, Middium Quality, Size-below 640xXXX in 16:9 mode. File size about 16MB & bad quality at last!
What's your suggestion setting either via FCP or Compressor for export?
Better quality & better file size ;)
    Thanks!!

For each of these select File>Export>Using QT Conversion and in the window thst opens change the "Use" to Broadband High or Medium from the dropdown menu.
As these are for 4:3 you will have to click the Options button and change "Size" to Custom and type in one of the sizes mentioned earlier.
Then open the Settings window and under Data Rate select "Restrict to 750kbps or 300kbps" according to the size you are using.

  • Best output for HD media player?

I have a seven-hour project shot in high definition with the Sony PMW EX-1 at 1080i 60. All clips have been through Color and are now in Pro Res 422 HQ. There are six to eight tracks of audio as well. My goal is to output to a file to play on a media player, in this case the ASUS O!play. I want the highest quality possible. This will be used to play a continuous loop of nature footage.
The O!play will play H.264, and mpeg2/4. I've tried to use Export Sequence-Quicktime conversion. I've set options to:
    Data rate: 10,000 kbits/sec
    Size: 1920X1080 HD
    Sound: 320 kbps
A three-day render of this huge project compressed the file size down to 28.9GB. While the overall picture quality is acceptable, there are motion artifacts--water does not look fluid and can appear blocky and sometimes briefly freezes or "hangs up", leaves in wind seriously blur--and some cross dissolves are not smooth. Must I accept this extreme degree of compression? File size is not an issue for me. I have a dedicated 1T hard drive feeding the media player via e-Sata cable.
I've also tried a sample through Compressor using the HDDVD 30-minute preset and making it a transport mpeg-2 and the same issues were there.

Back of napkin calculations tell me your 7 hour ProRes (HQ) movie would be about 500-600GB. Your H.264 version was 1/20th of that size.
Try changing the Keyframes from Automatic to 30, and set the Data Rate to 15,000 - your movie will probably double in size, but my guess is you'll get a better result.
Also - pick or create a 30 second problematic section - water/leaves/etc. That's small enough to do tests on. Play with the settings in Compressor (set up Compressor properly to take advantage of multiple CPU's - 1 instance for 2 processors - to minimize your compression times). Use that section as a test lab to dial in your settings. Instead of 3 days, you can home in on what you need quickly.
    Post back with your results.

  • Best device for importing audio cassettes to iMac

I have quite a few old audio cassettes that I'd like to import to my iMac Desktop (OS X 10.6.8).  I'm wondering if this device will do the trick?
OKEBA New Handheld Super Tape to PC USB Portable Cassette-to-MP3 Converter Capture Player Adapter with USB Cable Headphones and Software Cd -- MAC Compatible

Well, the answer that I really needed has been answered: Yes, you can transfer songs from a handheld cassette player to your iTunes library. I just did it, and the results were everything I had hoped for. (1) the quality was as good as I have gotten from desktop cassette players (2) The only piece of extra equiment needed is an iMic, which I already had.
The only reason that I had been having difficulties was that I was using the wrong settings. Everything was quickly clearly up when I talked to a technician at Griffin, the manufacture of the iMic.

  • Best methods for bringing media to a different system

I'm usually an Avid guy, and I am doing a FCP project that involved media that was digitized on a different system. I started a new project and imported the folder with the media and it came in just fine, but I now get an "Out of Memory" error after playing just a few clips. I've got a dual 2g G5 w/3 gigs of ram, so I guess I don't understand, any help would be appreciated.

    Jeff
glad helped you get over the first issue. This next isnt quite so simple. yes, I understand that according to many who've tried it, 4.5 wont open an FCP 5 project sadly. But, if you haven't done too much work on the project in 5 other than perhaps digitise the clips, why dont you try making a new project in 4.5 and simply import or drag the clips into your 4.5 project browser, they should play surely as they're just QT files. You should not have to re -log and capture. FYI in case there's a misunderstanding ...if say you have twenty clips on one drive, in this case an external, and you want to bring them into a porject which may be on another drive, and you drag or import as above to get them into the project, this only happens in the virtual sense. It doesnt physically affect the hard drive in a mjaor way - the clips do not get transferred, just previews I suppose one could call them. I'm sure many readers would like to know if you can get the clips into a 4.5 project. Pls let us know!
