Best device for VHS/8mm video input/record to disk?

Looking to transfer old tapes to .avi files or Xvid, or .mpg from VHS and 8mm tapes.
Not professional grade, just some old stuff for fun and to dump the tapes in the trash!
Anybody with experience that can offer suggestions would be appreciated.
John

I ended up buying a 'Set Top' DVD recorder to replace both VHS and 8mm decks. I can use it copy old tapes to DVD and record new shows off the cable just as though it was a VHS recorder.
If I need to view the videos on my Mac, they play just fine. The only issue would be if I wanted to do some editing, but I think I can even overcome that issue by converting the DVD video to DV format and then work with that on my Mac.
If I were to have bought a card, I would have gone with the Canopus as well.
Thanks for your input.
John

The password is set on the WiFi router providing the service, by the owner of the network to prevent unwanted "guests" accessing the network.  The only way to know it is to ask the owner permission to use the network.  Otherwise, you  have to find a free WiFi hotspot that doesn't require a password.

  • Best notebook for editing HD videos?

I consider to buy a MacBookPro or MacBookAir. Which one is the best choice for editing HD videos?

    You don't want a MacBook Air, a 13" or a 2.0 Ghz 15" for professional work.
You need the 2.2 Ghz 15" anti-glare, high res, MacBook Pro or better. (has the 1GB Radeon 6750M)
    The 17" is prefered because it's screen is 1920 x 1200, so 1080i (1920 x 1080 pixels) is WYSIWYG.
You need the anti-glare because your going to be using it for professional work in many environments that you can't control the glare, you need to be able to see the entire screen.
If your ordering online, get the 7,200 RPM drive. Else it's not that much difference from the 5,400 RPM store sold models. Get the 8GB of RAM installed right when you purchase and also AppleCare.
    Good luck.

  • Best software for doing full backups to ext. hard disk to to be used to restore system

As a new PC owner I wanted to find out what the best software for doing full backups to external hard disk,  to to be used to restore the system if primary primary disk crashes. Im aware that Windows, Acronis and Paragon all have software that doing varying degress of back and resore functions.

    lasvideo,
My favorites are ShadowProtect to do an "image backup" of boot drive and Beyond Compare for backing up files for all other "data" arrays. ShadowProtect does not seem to have much market share compared with Ghost and Acronis, but I really love it.
    What I like about ShadowProtect:
    - Extremely fast (complete image backup for 61GB of files on my boot SSD RAID 0 array to a RAID data array takes less than 3 minutes)
    - Can do image backups across a LAN; restores from boot CDROM and USB device
    - Allows for backups from one controller and restore of OS on a different controller and/or RAID configuration (has HAL tools; Hardware ? Layer I think)
    - Can "mount" an image backup as a drive letter and see (and copy) all directories, files, etc. that are contained in the archive
What I like about Beyond Compare:
    - Can choose what to backup and what to ignore very easily (for example you can set it to ignore certain files or directory names to ignore and then save how you set things up as a "session")
    - Only needs to copy over files that are new or have changed since your last backup
    - Makes it very easy to selectively delete files from your backup

  • Anything NEW in "bridge" devices for VHS transfer to digital?

I still digitize a lot of old family VHS tapes -- the hard way. I take a LINE OUT out from the VCR deck and INTO my Sony digital cam. Once it's digitized on Sony Hi8 tape, I can then out the tape INTO the Mac and iMovie. Works fine, butt one step too many. Awhile back there companies selling "bridge" devices that claimed to skip the middleman and let you output from VHS directly into the Mac. Most of them sucked. (Dazzle, anyone?) Anyone know of new devices that do the job? A friend told me he's been able to use his digitalcam as such a bridge, but I can't figure out how to do it on Sonycam (it has RCA inputs and an S-video input). I connect the VCR to the Mac via the Sonycam camera as the bridge. No luck. The videocam display instantly goes into "DV-IN" mode -- as if it thinks it's supposed to bring the video in from the Mac instead of from the VHS. (The Sonycam's DV firewire port is labeled "DV In-Out") Any help out there? Surely by now there's an easier, quicker way to convert from analog tape to digital..? -- David C

My Sony 520 has a "DV Out" soft switch which I assume is the same as the "Pass through" setting mentioned by other users. In any case, with this option selected the RCA/Mini-jack audio is applied directly to the FW output without having to "record" to tape as it appears you are doing. Not sure if this might be your problem here or not.

  • What is the best  media for long-term video storage?

I will be loading several MiniDV tapes into my Mac and want to store the video long-term (in a safe-deposit box). These are going to be home movies with some digital photos or scans as well.
I am curious what folks believe is the best medium for this. I am considering a Passport-style HD like those from LaCie, Western Digital and others. Has anyone had good luck with these? Or am I on the wrong track?
Thank you in advance for your opinions,
    jf

I considered getting one of the DVD recorder products from Sony (they say you can plug right into the camera, hit a button and get a DVD copy of the footage in real time)
You understand that a DVD recorder will convert and seriously compress the material in the transcode from DV to mpeg2?
DVDs like this are not a storage system if you are looking to keep original material in a) as close to original quality as possible and b) in an editable format.
40 1 hour DV tapes is just over 500 GB when captured. Get 2 1 TB drives and make two copies of the material. Use one for editing on-line and put the other on a shelf (not in your house). Just be sure to get it back and spin it up every month or so.
The tapes need to be seriously secured. If the safety deposit box is too small, look into a fireproof home vault. 40 tapes do not take up that much space. Just store it in a cool and not humid location.

  • Help for Dad - No Video Input

My dad has a G4 tower. He uses it minimally for email and surfing the web.
When he boots up the display shows:
    "No video input"
With a camera icon and 2 faces and a blinking question mark.
Any reason for this to pop up out of no where?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
The only thing I can think of is that he's added an application to his startup / login items (or it added itself on installation) that requires a video capture device. Under OS X 10.4 the login items can be maintained via the Accounts system preference. Failing that, could it be an iChat preference (Auto Start?) he's tinkered with?

  • Best device for external monitoring? Sure to be a popular topic.

Any thoughts on the best device? I am a one person shop and am very pleased with the update. I like X and have been using FCP since version 1. I had a Kona 3 and was very pleased with the product so I will most likely purchase the new io XT. Customer support was great. And the party AJA threw at NAB wasn't bad either. Now that I cut on a an iMac, I have been waiting for this update. I see that Blackmagic has a device at a much lower price point. Are you getting what you pay for? What product has the best features?
I would really appreciate any thoughts.
    Cheers.
    Tom

    Hi,
it is not necessary to enter the exact amount for external service in PM order ,
exact amount must be confirmed during service entry sheet ml81n
or it also be adjusted during miro ( invoicing )
and for prininting , most of the part as u said are covered in standard printing of Maintenance order, PR and PO
otherwise there must be customized PO printing in ur organisation that can be change if ur requirements does not meet

How do I set my Sony digital video camera recorder DCR-TRV 11 to 16-bit?
Also, I do not have or use Final Cut.
Thank you for the warning about 16 bit. I wish you would tell me why it is important to set to 16 bit, though.

  • Best setting for encoding flv video?

What is the best, most universally accepted setting for encoding flv videos to be viewed over cable modem access?

    I completely understand.
For print work, I did a lot of that with either Save_As, or Save_As_a_Copy in Photoshop. Then, they added Layer Comps, and that cut down on the work, but allowed me to have several "treatments."
Have not used that in PrPro though. I see the usefulness of the feature though.
Yeah, clients are fond of saying, "really appreciate you following all of my ideas, but I think I like what you had last week better... Can we go with it, but with these few extra changes?" Happens all too frequently. Lot easier now, than back in the old days, when one painted the cyc, set up the shot, and lit it, only to have the AD change the color of the cyc. When done, they'd often say, "liked that original color better. Let's tear it all down and re-paint to that." Now, I just change the color of the background digitally - a lot less painting!!!"
    Thanks for that tip,

  • IP: Best Practice for capturing Key Figure input value in characteristics

    Hi Gurus,
we have the requeirement to capture a plannable key figure as a characteristic as well for reporting reasons.
Input in the key figures will be a closed value ist (1 to 5) so no new master data will be created by that in the respective characteristics.
My first guess was an exit characterisic relationship, but obviously it is named "Characteristic Relationship" for a reason, as you cannot not derive values from key figures here.
Any ideas on what would be the best and easiest implementation scenario?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Tobias

    Hi Tobias,
You can derive a characteristic value from a keyfigure using Characteristic relationship of type "EXIT".
Kindly let me know if your issue doesn't get solved using the EXIT type char rel.
    EXIT type characteristic relationship:
The valid characteristic combinations and derivable characteristic values are defined by the customer-specific implementation of the specified exit class.
The exit class must implement the interface 'IF_RSPLS_CR_EXIT'. Only these types of classes are offered for editing in maintenance. We recommend that you derive your own class from the example class 'CL_RSPLS_CR_EXIT_BASE'. You then only have to implement the methods u2018CHECKu2019, u2018DERIVEu2019 and u2018CREATEu2019. The class 'CL_RSPLS_CR_EXIT_BASE' itself can be used directly, but it does not execute an action.
Note also the example source code given in the template class; an infrastructure for buffering is provided there, for example.

  • Best upgrades for smooth HD video editing?

I love video editing and plan on making the jump to HD.
I intended on upgrading to a Quad Core...
but I read somewhere that processors for Late 2008 Unibodies are not upgradeable, bummer!
So, will an upgrade to 240GB SSD and 8GB RAM suffice?
All I want is smooth editing and exporting,
while regularly making the most of Adobe Premiere CS6 and inputing video from a Canon T3i DSLR.
Anyone else using the 2008 unibody for editing HD video?
What adjustments have you given your laptop?
Will a SSD and RAM upgrade suffice?
    Your advice is well appreciated
(p.s. I will probably be uprading to Mountain Lion, as well)

I have two late 2008 Macbook Unibody.
    A 2GHz with a 120GB OCZ SSD and a 2.4GHz with a 128GB Kingston SSD.  Both have 8GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM installed.
These are the two Macbooks I use at work - I use Photoshop and Premiere with no issues.
Because of the speed of the SSD and the 8GB RAM upgrade - these Macbooks can keep up with my Late 2011 with 16GB of RAM and 240GB SSD.
So your upgrade plan will have a significant performance boost to what you'll be using it for.

  • What's the best app for taking a video on ipad2?

I am a tennis coach and am looking for an app for my iPad2 to do video analysis. I need to be able to video someone doing a serve and then show it to them in slow motion and be able to pause it. What's the best app for this?

Do some research into HTML5 video. Unless the user is using a modern browser with video playback capabilities, they would need to have an app to provide video playback, as well as the codecs for the video file format that you will be serving them. At this point in time, MP4 is the "clear(est)" winner of the online video formats. However not all browsers provide built-in playback. For instance, Firefox currently does not support MP4. Future Firefox builds will rely on whatever video playback the native OS provides. So coming back to your question - no, there's no real way of guaranteeing video playback on the web. You do the best you can and provide links to users where they can download the appropriate codecs and players and call it a day.
