Best drive to use with k8n Platinum?

Need to know the fastest drive to use with this board. I'm sort of confused about the different types of interfaces i.e. scsi, IDE, and SATA.

Sampson,
Nowadays all modern ATA and SATA drives in the marked have reached the Performance  limitation opposed by the HDD Technology (electromechanic disk drives)...
....performance differences are in the range of few mseconds between different manufacturers and don't really matter, just for marketing purposes if you catch my drift...
There are more important characteristics these days describing HDDs other than performance.
Like reliability, capacity and bug/GB figures.
Taking the vast amount of media and other torrents floating in the net i would go definitely for the largest capacity and bug/GB and good reliability and less for performance.
So if i would tomorrow go and buy a HDD i would go for this beauty here,

  • Best speed External Hard Drive to use with Final Cut Pro X ?

    Hey all
I'm looking at getting a new USB 2.0 external hard drive to use with FCPX, I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on minimum speeds and what everyone else uses.
I am looking at least 1-2TB.

I will warn you now that I am somewhat of a lone voice on these forums for recommending USB 2.0s.
I have used the 7,200rpm types with their own mains supply over the last 6 years (and exclusively for the last 3) and had no problems of any kind.
Having said that I am not a pro with tight schedules (or underwear!) but I have used DV, HDV, AVCHD with and without ProRes and AIC.
Most of my projects are short though I have done a number of 2 hour projects with comparatively simple editing and a few effects etc. One ongoing project has some 12 hours of DV which I dip into  occasionally.
I have a couple of LaCie FW HDs which I stopped using a couple of years ago in favour of the much cheaper USB 2.0s and didn't notice any difference, though as I said I don't have pro time constraints.
Now is not the best time to buy HDs cheaply as the autumn floods in Asia knocked out many of the main suppliers, prices doubled overnight and have still not got back to last summers figures (2TB WD Essential £69 with free delivery).
    Look at the price now!

Yes. Windows supports external USB drives.

  • Is Time Machine something that I can back up to in a separate particle of my new MacBook Pro or do I need an external drive to use with it?

.....ie we have Seagate external drives but both have Windows files on them, although plenty of room. Am I able to keep the Windows files on them and back up to them with Time Machine on new MacBook Pro? Don't understand....and not very clear. Thanks
    Belinda

    Belinda,
In order to use Time Machine the external volume must be formatted in Disk Utility as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". You can't use a drive that is formatted to be used for both a Mac and a Windows unit (exFAT, etc.). You should purchase a new external drive to use with Time Machine and never let your work go for over a week with hooking up to the TM drive and allow Time Machine to do it's thing.

  • Format external drive for use with both Leopard & XP, & maybe Win7

I want to repurpose one of my old small Firewire drives to use with both Leopard and XP via Boot Camp on my MacBook. It is is 60GB and is currently formatted with MacOS Extended Journaled, and Apple Partition Map. I don't think I will have any need at the present time to store files of more than 4GB on it (most of the ones I want to store are no more than a few hundred MB each).
Is using FAT32 with Master Boot Record adequate? Up until now I have just used flash drives for external Windows storage, but I would like to consolidate lots of topographic maps files onto this one Firewire drive instead of using multiple flash drives, and use these files with both Leopard and XP. If I want to try Windows 7 in the future via either Boot Camp or virtualization, will there be a problem with FAT32/MBR?

    Hi,
using FAT32 as file system and MBR as partition table should work just fine with OSX and all Windows versions up to 7.
And since your files don't come close to 4GB single-file-size, that FAT32 limitation is no hinderance.
Use Disk Utility to do this, since Windows won't format partitions/drives with more than 32GB to FAT32 (built-in limitation).
Nonetheless it can use such partitions (I have a 200GB on my external HD).

  • Perfect Hard Drive To Use With Time Machine?

    Hi,
Has anyone found out what's the perfect External Hard Drive to use with Time Machine?
I have experience with a few of WD's My Book models (Essential, Pro and Studio). The problem with all of them is that they automatically keep switching themselves off (spin down) and on (spin up) throughout the day, in an effort to save power. But it's actually quite annoying. The My Book drive will automatically turn itself off, and then turn back on again within the space of one minute. Also, going to use Spotlight (even if you've excluded Time Machine Backups from being indexed) will automatically prompt the My Book drive to turn back on, which introduces a small delay to using Spotlight.
Does anyone make an External Hard Drive, with a Firewire 400 or 800 connection, that stays on ALL the time and doesn't automatically make decisions about when it should spin down or spin up?

I'am using a 500Gb Freecom Pro Hard Drive connected on USB via my Cinema Display. I so forget about it that I often forget to disconnect it from my laptop before leaving the office... Never complained about it
Btw, it does not implements the energy saver Auto turn off/on feature which I don't need cause the time it could mostly be really useful is by night. As it stops when I disconnect the USB and start again when I connect it back.. this is perfect to me.
I must say I'm quite happy with every Freecom product I bought and this one certainly don't break the rule

  • Partitioning an External 320gb drive for use with Time Machine and...

I want to be able to use my Western Digital 320GB external drive for use with Time Machine and to use as extra storage space on both my Mac and when I boot into Windows Vista.
    Is this possible?
I was playing around in Disk Utility and would I partition the part I want to use for Time Machine with the Mac OS Journaled, and whatever I want as space for windows, use a MS - DOS format?
    Has anyone done this before?
    Cheers-

Unless you are using 64 bit version of MSWindows (64 bit XP/Vista), it won't be able to handle a disk with GUID partition table (GPT). Disks with Apple Partition Map (APM) or GUID partition table are the only ones that Time Machine will work with (not MBR disks). Note also that the MBR/APM/GPT are at the DISK level and not the partition level, so don't mix the format with partitioning scheme. Time Machine disks are meant to live in the Mac universe (for now, anyway) and sharing with the MSWindows 32-bit universe is not possible.

The BEST format to use with iDVD is .DV video from QT Pro ?
    Hi Jon
If you remember my video (640x480) NTSC in iMovie Project.
Someone told me that exporting movie to DV video QT from iMovie share option, for burning in iDVD, is the best quality possible.
    Is this true ?
If so what are the parameters ? Again is for seeing in a widescreen TV

Someone told me that exporting movie to DV video QT from iMovie share option, for burning in iDVD, is the best quality possible.... Is this true ?
As usual, this is really a matter of individual opinion. I personally prefer the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). It is newer codec specifically designed for use as an "intermediate" editing compression format. It is slightly more efficient than DV-25 (18-20 Mbps for audio + video vs. 28.5 Mbps) and is less restrictive (i.e.,the user has more control over certain settings). On the other hand, the very nature of having a highly standardized (few user option) compression format does appeal to many users since there are fewer things the user can mess up.
If so what are the parameters ? Again is for seeing in a widescreen TV
Bit rate, frame rate, and encoding dimensions are part of the standard and do not have user parameters as such other than selecting the NTSC or PAL standard. With regard to the aspect ratio, you simply select which you want to use—4:3 or 16:9. However, as I've previously mentioned, it is possible to distort your output by either entering the wrong aspect or to actually "lose" the embedded flag/value in some work flows. (I.e., a 4:3 aspect movie displayed at 16:9 makes the people an objects appear short and fat while encoding a 16:9 aspect movie as 4:3 will make them look tall and skinny.) Movies should always be encoded in their original aspect ratio since any modern digital TV will allow the user to disport—i.e., force a 4:3 file to fully fill a 16:9 display screen. In fact, some will even allow you to spread the distortion evenly across your screen or to the spread it proportionally. (On my set these features are called "H-Fill" and "Justify" respectively.) If you were to use the AIC video compression format rather than DV, then you would have to manually enter the display dimensions for the "standard" and/or "definition" format you are targeting.

  • What is a good external hard drive for use with a macbook air?

I am looking at purchasing a macbook air 13". What is a good external hard drive to use with it? Should I look for an external hard drive with its own a/c power or is the usb 3.0 capable of powering the external drive.

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

  • What is best hard drive to use with Time Machine?

I was using a WD Passport 2TB external drive for my Time Machine backup for iMac which has a 3TB drive.  The drive is almost 1 year old and only bought it to for backing up with Time Machine.  The drive failed when I tried to restore a iPhoto database to my iMac on Sunday. Today on Tuesday evening. Time Machine said it could not perform a successful back up due to Disk Failure. I ran the disk utility and it gave me error. I had to erase and reformat the drive.
I was able to erase and reformat the drive and ran the disk utlity again. And it says it is working fine. I dont plan to use these portable drives for backing.
I think its time to get a better Hard Drive for my Time Machine backups. Any suggestions?

WD commercial drives for consumers are the worst,  as meant their "green / blue / red" series.

  • Best hard drive for use with Time Machine

    Hi,
Has anyone determined what the best external hard drive is for use with Time Machine? Is there a particular one that works exceptionally well with Time Machine, or is it much of a muchness?
I'm looking for a Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 drive that STAYS ON all the time, and doesn't automatically spin down or spin up like the rubbish WD My Book drives do.

I can't tell you if it is the "best" hard drive for you to use with TM, but I'm quite happy with the 500 GB Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo TurboUSB I bought recently. It is quiet, quite inexpensive for the capacity (I paid about $120 for one on sale at Fry's), & completely compatible with OS X & TM.
Best of all for me, it automatically powers down when my iMac sleeps. It also spins down after a time if the Mac's Energy Saver preference "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked; otherwise it remains spun up until the Mac is put to sleep or switched off.
It comes with "Turbo" USB & Memeo "AutoBackup" software, neither of which I installed. (The box didn't claim these extras came in a Mac version but both Mac & Windows versions were included on the CD.) Out-of-the-box, I reformatted the drive with the Apple Partition Map scheme & two partitions, a 160 GB one for cloning my internal drive & the rest for TM. The drive works perfectly for both uses & seems quite fast, as one would expect from a 7200 rpm SATA drive.

  • What is the best external hard drive to use with a macbook?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive for my macbook pro (2010).  I understand that some hard drives have issues when used with Lion.
Does anyone have any suggestions for which is the best to buy?

Any hard drive should work. I don't know of any issues caused by a specific brand of hard drive for working with Lion.
Now as far as the hard drive itself goes there are a few options. Most external drives run at 7200 rpm. Some however still run at 5400 rpm (rpm is the speed of the disk in layman's terms). Faster is better in most cases, however they do produce slightly more sound and run hotter, but not by much.
Then there is also the choice between USB and FireWire (thunderbolt is still to pricy). FireWire runs faster, but is more expensive.
    Those are your choices.

  • SATA DVD RW issues with K8N Platinum

    Hi
    I have MSI K8N,(939-pin) Platinum-SLI, Mother Board (AMD 3200+, 1.25GB RAM, 80GB SATA HDD).
On my system  I am facing trouble with SATA DVD- Writer (Samsung's 22x, S-223F/IDBH), as it can read all supported disks but unfortunately it is unable  to write/burn CD/DVD in any format since I purchased this DVD writer . Surprisingly this very same DVD writer  works perfectly  with any other Intel's machine for both reading & writing functions.
"However the DVD writer with IDE cable works fine on my system without any change or any exclusive setting anywhere."
Following measures I have tried but failed to burn any disk with my SATA DVD writer
    1. Reseted the BIOS to default/reset to factory setting.
        a) Verified that both of the SATA  controller were enabled.
        b) Verified that RAID was Disabled.
    2. Swaped & connected the DVD writer SATA cable to the port in which the HDD SATA cable was plugged in.
    3. Repleced the complete DVD writer from Samsung Service Center.
    4. Updated the Nero from 7.X to 8.X on the system
    5. Tried to burn disks with other freeware disk burning tools. (e.g. "Burn Plus", "Burn free" etc).
    6.  No other  Optical drive was attached.
    7. Updated the firmware of DVD writer from samsung's service center.
In all the cases of attempting to burn disks, I found either of the following errors
    Error Message 1
    Invalid block address
    Invalid write state
    Could not perform EndTrack
    Burn process failed
    ******************   OR   *****************************
    Error Message 2
    Invalid block address
    Writing short lead-out
    Session fixation error
    Burn process failed
Kindly help me to resolve the issue. :(
    Thanks

You didn't mention if the DVD drive showed up in your bios.  Look in "Standard CMOS Features" , you should have a list of all devices attached to the ide and sata ports.
you said the drive will play music, is the sound analog (through the small sound cable connected between JCD1 on your motherboard to the DVD drive, or are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)?
Is this a replacement DVD player, an upgrade from a CD player, or a brand new install?
Which Operating System are you using? In the past, I have had cd/dvd drives that some how got set up in the os only to play music and would not read or write data discs.
I fixed the problem by removing the cd/dvd drivers from the system and reinstalling.
I am using or have used  LG, Sony, and Aopen  BD/DVD/CD drives on this motherboard (K8N Neo2 Platinum).
"Ya Scottike , following are my observations
    1. I 'm able to see all connected drives connected through sata ports (i.e. HDD & this DVD Writer) in BIOS under "Standard CMOS Features".
    2. This DVD Writer is absolutely working fine for all reading functionality.
(It plays music are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)).
    3.  No Other Optical Drive is attached.
    4. Currently Windows Vista Ultimate is installed.
Note: I have also tried with Windows XP + SP2 earlier on my system, its gives same error whenever tried to
burn any disk with this DVD writer.
    5. This is a brand new DVD writer.
Hope I have answered all your queries. Please let me know what can I do to solve my purpose.
    Thanks

  • Problem with K8N Platinum Plus

    Greetings all,
I am an veteran builder and am having a strange behavior that I need some help with.  Here is some background on parts:
    MSI K8N Platinum Plus
    2 x 1GB OCZ PC-3200 (OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K)
    600W OCZ supply
    X2 4400+
    (2) eVGA 7900GT's
(I can give more specs if necessary)
    Problem:
The board posts and I can interate just fine up until the OS boots...  I just partition copied my previous Windows XP SP2 installation from my old HDD to the new one.  I knew that XP would rescan hardware and I had a 50/50 chance of not having to reinstall.  Each time I boot the box and let XP load it gets to the "starting up" and does nothing... goes no where, yet the keyboard is not locked up (CAPS lock turns on and off still).  I left it running for about an hour, just hoping... nope.  Ok, so fresh install, whatever... XP disc starts up and just as it goes to flip over to start the installer the monitor goes black!  Nothing, CDROM spins down and nothing EVER happens.  I tried flashing the beta (NOT what I would normally do) bios, but nothing changed.  I tried other memory, no change.  I pulled one of my video cards (no more SLI), no change... pulled the sound card, no change... Wierdest thing is that is both cases (booting old XP and trying to install new) the machine is not locked up.
    Ideas?

    Jason,
There are people that do not like multiple RAILs on PSUs for supplying high power systems. Personally I think that a high end Power Supply with multiple RAILs will work but the lower end PSUs with multiple RAILs will not supply the needed juice.
Multiple RAIL PSUs are a new technology and with all new technologies there are going to be teething problems. It is to be expected.
I was trying to figure out why your old comp stopped working too.
On the new comp, lets try Bare Bones for the install of your OS. I would like CPU with heatsink/fan, 1 Vid Card, 1 stick of RAM at 3.4.4.8 Timing with the Voltage bumped up one notch, 1 HD and if you are using RAID 0 - then 1 Array, 1 Optical Drive, no PCI Cards, Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor. Lets see how far you get though a fresh install.
    Take Care,
    Richard
I will try this tonight... last night I tried something VERY close to what you are suggesting, the only difference is that I am not sure that I used 3.4.4.8 on timings... I just used whatever the default timings on the DIMMs are, which should be 2.3.2.5.  I only have one HDD, 1 Video card, DVDRW, floppy, CPU, memory (1 green, 1 purple -- is this right?) and that did not work either with DVI connect or using VGA through DVI adapter.  I did see that someone else was having some Video cracking using a DVI connector... wondering if mine is somehow related to that problem... although, I get NO video (past POST) and he does.
As far as the multi-rail thing... well, if the PSU is on the "A" list of DFI's and nVidia gives it a "SLi certified" then I would think that it would be just fine.  Is my power supply fine or not?
