Best drives for sharing and editing Indesign files remotely or onsite?

Small company needs to move Indesign folders from one iMac to a new drive, so more than 1 of us can open and edit in IndesignCC. I need to move all my Indesign documents and Lightroom folders and photos off my iMac and onto something accessible to multiple iMacs and Windows PCs. Some Windows workstations will just be viewing and printing the pdf versions of the Indesign forms. And they will be accessing Word docs and Excel files in these shared folders. But my daughter and I need to open and edit all Indesign documents and Lightroom photos from home or from office. I think we would prefer to work on these files without having to first download them to our local hard drives.
4 Windows PCs and 2 iMacs in our office are on a LAN so we can access our business application software. So some of our tech support trusted advisors are suggesting Samba folders on our office server. Others say a NAS drive is a good solution or maybe cloud based storage. All these people know well the basics of sharing files on a mixed network--but none of them work in Lightroom or Indesign.
96 GB is total amount of all files, photos, and folders. Some of these are duplicate folders I'll delete and consolidate as I move them to new location. The dng photos and Photoshop files we work with are all under 5 MB. If our homes use regular Time Warner Cable and AT&T Uverse internet access, is it reasonable to expect we can work from home with same speed as when we are in the office? And does either a Samba folder on our RedHat linux box or/vs a NAS drive or/vs some cloud based storage offer any better chance of speed and ease of working from home?
Thank you for reading all of this. Any advice would be appreciated.

You don't need a Mac Mini server to do that. Any cheap system could do that. I'd check Freecycle or even ebay and criagslist. Look for some old Pentium 2/3/4 system someone is looking to offload. Slap in a high capacity drive or two, load a copy of Linux on there, set up SAMBA for SMB file sharing, or even a simple FTP server, and you're good to go. You can probably just run it without a monitor, off to the side somewhere, and just use SSH or VNC to monitor it.
The only problem with that, is that the electricity demands will get a bit high compared to some dedicated NAS hardware. NAS devices will have a higher up front cost, but they'll use considerably less electricity, so be cheaper in the long run.
Of course if you expect to be using the system as a HTPC as well, then I might be more able to give the nod to the Mini Server. Though the non-Server mini would work just as well, with the exception of only having the one HDD.

  • Best solution for customers to edit InDesign files within a browser????

I have done a lot of research of some of the companies out there now that do this (one2edit, wealledit, chilli publishing, etc.) and none are really what we are looking for.  To begin, we are a publishing company that produces custom academic planning calendars....which includes formatting rules/regulations for schools that will be included with a calendar.  Basically, we currently export an RTF each year and the school will edit that RTF file.  We then use some custom scripts to import back into InDesign.  Now, if they do this correct (use our styles in the file, etc)...typically, this works pretty well.  However, out of 2000+ schools, probably only 60-70% do this right....which leads many more hours of formatting, etc.  We also post a PDF proof online before we send the files to print and the school has an opportunity at that time to make changes, edits, etc. to the rules and regulations section.  Currently, they simply tell us what they want changed, added, etc and we do that for them.
    Our goal here:
We would like the schools to be able to make their changes in the begining of each year as well as at proof time live in the InDesign document via a browser.  One company that is similar to this is WeAllEdit.  There are some issues with how they update the info live (to see page flow), etc. and that is a huge feature we need.  We would like the admin at the school to make whatever edits they have each year or at proof time in a browser that looks EXACTLY like the InDesign document we have created for them.  This will include current page flow, paragraph styles, custom tabs (mainly text).  If they are to make a change in the browser that affects page flow - i.e. pushes something to a new page or pulls something from the next page, we want to be visible to the customer so they can see exactly how the flow of the document is and how it will print.
    Solutions:??
    - Again, WeAllEdit seems to be the closest to what we are looking for (for a reference point), but, still has issues with what we are looking for.
    - Do we investigate purchasing a InDesign server license and develop/design our own interface for this?
    - Is .XML an option?  You can currently export an XML file with tagged text.  Is this something that can be translated into an online feature with a good designer?
    - other suggestions??
Sorry for the lengthy post, just wanted to be very specific as to what we do and what we are looking for.  ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am faced with the same problem today. Did you ever work out a solution for this?

  • Best way to view and edit OpenOffice files on my new iPad Mini (originally Word and Excel files). Thanks!

Can someone tell me the best way to view and edit OpenOffice files on my new iPad Mini (originally Word and Excel files)? Thanks!

wmf files is a MS Windows video file, you will need a tool to covert the wmf files to another file format OS X will read. Simply Google to find a converter you are interested in and use it.

  • What are the Best Practices for Optimizing Images in InDesign Files

Is there a best practice for using images InDesign to optimize the document before converting to a PDF? Specifically, what I'm asking is, will the PDF file compress better if the images are cropped prior to placing them in Indesign? I'd like to know the answer for both creating PDF files for printing using images that are 300dpi and for creating PDF files for online delivery using images that are 72dpi. I have an employee that insists images need to be cropped to actual dimensions before placing in the InDesign document. I've never done it that way and believe that her recommended process is way too time consuming and leaves you with no leeway to tweak your page design since the images are tightly cropped.

As for absolute cropping, I agree with your stance. Until the layout is fixed, preserving your ability to easily manipulate photo size and positioning is key.
Some clever image management methods have been described in the discussion forums, and one that appealed most to me was the use of duplicate linked image folders. Having a high-res (CMYK) folder and a low-res (RGB) folder to switch between for different output enables you to use both to your advantage. Use the low-res images for layout, for internal proofing, and for EPUB/online PDF/HTML output. Then it's simply a quick switch to the high-res image folder for print purposes. You can easily prepare the alternate collection of images with a Photoshop batch convert script or with the Photoshop Image Processor. Save your presets!

  • PKGBUILD best practice for autotools and missing required files

I am trying to update one of my packages in the AUR.  Upstream using GNU automake/autoconf tools and has worked just fine for previous versions.  This time around, the download from upstream is missing several of the mandatory files required by autoconf.  I am trying to figure out the best way to deal with this.
    1.  I can add just create them, and distribute them with the Tarbell, and push them into src directory prior to invoking autoconf.
    or
    2. I can use the --add-missing flag, but that requires the running of autoconf multiple times (unless I am confused)
What is the best practice when files such as NEWS and README are missing?

I highly recommend you review Brad Hedlund's videos regarding UCS networking here:
    http://bradhedlund.com/2010/06/22/cisco-ucs-networking-best-practices/
You may want to focus on Part 10 in particular, as this talks about running UCS in end-host mode without vPC or VSS.

  • Best solution for finding and eliminating duplicate files? 10.8.3

Good morning.  I just upgraded to 10.8.3 (from, 10.6.8) and have many external hard drives with tons of duplicate photos, music and general documents.
I've been looking into what the best way is to pull all this together and have it all backed up in one spot, with duplicate deleted.
Probably around 3TB's of data spread over 5 external drives.
Any suggestions on best way to achieve / softweare to use woiuld be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Another option that is free is DupeGuru: http://www.hardcoded.net/dupeguru/
I have not used these personally so I am not sure how effective they are, but they do have some positive reviews by others.

  • Best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

format flash drive in Exfat for transferring files between Mac and Pc.
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?

I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?  Both computers have OS X10.9.3.  Currently they are connected by a Firewire 800 cable.

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

Im looking for a MacBook that is worth the money and decent for gaming and editing, any suggestions?
    There all so AWESOME!

Then you are best to get a Macbook Pro. Your real aim should be the graphics card.
You won't be doing really good gaming on a discrete graphics card sharing RAM.
Depending of coarse what games you play.
eg. card games / COD games.

I will be buying an IMac 27 inch in December. What is the best configuration for photo and possibly video processing.Does one need a Mac Pro? Dream machine!

Just to explain what I just wrote to Laundry Bleach:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • Best driver for XFI Titanium

Hello I am new here and confused with all these driver options and differences with sound between Windows XP and Windows 7 as I've heard that from Vista Microsoft took away proper hardware support from these cards.
Please kindly can someone provide me the best driver for use for Creative XFI-Titanium PCIe sound card?
I need it to perform surround sound in headphones via CMSS-3D I think it is called.
    Thank you very much.

    `Thanks for replies.
    So I have installed the?
    SB X-Fi Titanium PCI-E Install Disc .0
    from http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/SB-X-Fi-Titanium-PCI-E-Install-Disc--0-unofficial/td-p/556425
I am not sure what the difference between the support pack and this is to be honest. So I just installed this one as it comes with more updated software.
    edit:
Sorry I forgot to mention that in device manager under sound controllers it lists
    Creative SB X-Fi
Does this mean that my system is not properly recognised or doesn't it display the specifics such as Creative X-Fi Titanium for example? Thanks...

  • How to format an external drive for mac AND pc use

i want to format my external drive so i can use it on my mac and on pc's as well. i've gathered that the MS-DOS format is the way to go. my question is this: would this create any problems for my mac then?
can i partion one part for ms-dos and part for macos extended?
    cheers
    -j-

MS-DOS format (or FAT32) will be fine for both Mac and PC. However there is a 4GB file size limit with FAT32.
You could use a dual partition, however the HFS+ partition would not be readable by the PC unless you installed the third party MacDrive.
Look at this page for more information on a dual partition drive for Mac and Windows.
