Best Dual Layer DVD's for Atapi Drive (inside MBP_

I have a 2.4 duo core and need to know the best that people have luck with.
May say Verbatium -R DL but sometimes my machine spits it out, other times it does not.
Thanks.
A list (opions of course) like from best to worst appreciated, e.g.
1. Verbatium -R
2. Sony +r
10 TDK +R

Really??
I heard they did NOT work that good, remember, I have a OLDER 2008 MBP 2.4 with Atapi recorder.
Maybe for the newer models? Not sure if I tried but know some that never worked.
Also, "+R" or "-R"
Which works better? Plus or minus?
Thanks.

  • Burning Dual Layer DVD's on Pioneer drives

    Hi everyone,
I have a Pioneer DVD burning that I installed on my G4 PowerPC (OS 10.4.11)- I forget the model #, but I know it's a DL burner. I'm using Toast 9 to burn my media. My question is, which DVD-/+R DL media is the best to use on Pioneer drives. I typically have problems burning Sony, Maxell and (sometimes) Memorex media. Normally TDK and Philips work best, but I've never burned a dual layer dvd before.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

This site suggests those two as well as Verbatim, and points out that only certain countries of origin, or certain Authorized dealers can be trusted:

Use caution in selecting media -- unless you have an 8X drive, 8X media will give "laser calibration errors" and not work.

  • Dual Layer DVD Burner for Mac OS 9

I always figured that the 1 hour burn limit imposed by iDVD was done intentionally to help sell DVD Studio Pro. Now having bought a copy of DVD Studio, I find that the limitation is actually imposed by the number of layers a burner is capable of writing.
My research leads me to believe that Apple released a dual layer burner for the MacBook but no mention of its comaptibility for other models.
So is there a dual layer burner available for other model Macs and equally important will it work with Mac OS 9.2.2?

Funny, the link provided and researched before posting here does show
the MCE drive* to fully support Apple software without Roxio and has a
30 day guarantee if for any reason (including no evidence of failure)
they will replace or refund your money. Less installation fees, if any.
The primary issue, from your perspective, is the need to run OS 9.2.2
and presumably boot native and burn with it. Otherwise, the product
will perform as indicated in their write-up.
{A call to Other World Computing is recommended, to see if they have
    or know of a hardware replacement for what you specifically need.}
What they do say, in several places, indicating proper interface with
the Mac OS X system and applications, is:
    *An MCE Exclusive (10.4+ required)
    iLife '05+
Seamless integration with iLife, Mac OS X
The MCE 16X Internal SuperDrive Upgrade with Double Layer support is seamlessly compatible
with all of Apple's iApps including iTunes, iDVD, and iPhoto. In addition, it is compatible with Finder
Burning and DVD Studio Pro, Apple's professional DVD Authoring software.
These are often a choice for replacement hardware in out-of-warranty units.
And they often supersede the earlier hardware they replace, or match many
specs in new environments, depending on what product application's compared.
The earlier link to search results and product info direct from quality vendor sources
is a recommended path; call the actual company (note names of duration in resale)
or contact a regional or local parts vendor or authorized Apple repair center.
MCE's product, as listed, will do the job in OS X. It may work with Classic9 under X.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Dual Layer DVD reader for Sun Blade 2500?

Can anyone recommend a dual layer DVD reader that will work with the Sun Blade 2500 (Silver)? Either something to replace the built-in single layer reader or something that will work externally either via firewire or USB.
    Thanks!

I haven't had occasion to use a dual-layer drive yet, but I've found that all the external and internal Sony drives I've ever happened to plug into my old 1500 worked great...

  • Dual Layer DVD Burners?  (Best Choices)

What are people having the Best luck with Dual Layer DVD wise?
I have an older G4 (as seen on bottom of post)
I've been reading that the DVD+ format is the way to go as far as Dual Layer DVD is concerned..
Does that mean I wouldn't be able to play it back on my single layer SuperDrive?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Can't anyone give me a couple of good choices for Dual Layer DVD Burners for the G4?
I know that LaCie makes one, are they're any better choices?
    Thanks Again,
    Eric
Which model of LaCie, or others are recommended?
    (or not recommended?)

  • Dual layer DVD compatibility list

    Hello,
is there a list of the best dual layer DVDs which can be used with a Macbook pro? I had a Mitsubishi DVD+R DL, which did not even begin burning at two different Macbooks, and failed during half of the burning process on a third Macbook. Since they are more expensive than ususal DVDs, I would appriciate if anyone can highly recommend certain brands so I don't have to buy and test every single brand.
    Thank you.

I have Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL discs which work fine in my Mac Pro but do not work at all in my MacBook Pro (late 2008).
If I burn a data DVD on the Mac Pro, the MacBook Pro tries to read the disc but ejects the disc without mounting it.
If I insert a blank DL disc into the MacBook Pro it ejects it after several seconds without offering to do anything with the disc.
I know that the technical specifications for the MacBook Pro says up to 4x burn speed for DL, but shouldn't I expect the drive to be able to read the discs?

  • Which Dual-Layer DVD's are apprpriate?

I need to get some dual-layer DVD's for my new Mini (2009), which should be arriving tomorrow. I was going to get Verbatims, since everyone seems to think they are among the most reliable. But which ones?
I was going to get DVD+R DL, but they come in 2.4x and 8x. Verbatim's website says that the 2.4x will write up to 6x, and the 8x will write up to 10x. That's already confusing enough. So which speed will work best with the new Mac Mini?
Thanks to anyone who may know.

I've been burning dvd's for 10+ years and Verbatim is the best(as long as they are still making their disc in Singapore anyways) media you can buy. Never had more than a handfun burns fail on me unlike other brands and those that did fail Verbatim sent me a replacement dvd dualayer. Anyways, in regards to your question it's a moot point since the drive won't let you burn any faster than what it's rated for so it looks like you are stuck at 6x speed at most. If you have this pioneer dvd burner in your mini anyways like mine:
    http://www.pioneer-america.com/PUSA/Products/BusinessProducts/Blu-rayDisc+DVDWri ters/DVDComputerWriters/ci.DVR-TS08.Support?tab=E
Besides by burning at a slower speed the disc will be more likely to play in older drives and standalone dvd units. Only downside of course is the longer burn times.
p.s. I've heard that some mini's come with a Sony burner so you might want to check.

  • Read Dual Layer DVDs in Mac Mini 2005

My brother has a Mac Mini that he bought in late 2005.
Can he read dual layer DVDs in this optical drive? More specifically, can he use Handbrake to rip dual layer DVDs on this Mac Mini?

Might be my ignorance speaking here, but this is the first I've ever heard of a drive that won't read a dual-layer disc. The vast majority of commercial DVD movies are in DVD9 (DL) format, and I'd be beyond surprised if your iBook wasn't able to play any of them...
I don't have my iBook yet, but I'd guess the combo drive in my Mini is the same, and I've yet to find any DVDs that won't play...

  • Best strategy for buring dual layer DVD

I've got a project that won't fit on a single layer DVD, so I've got it set up for dual layer and "best quality" which results in a 7.38GB disk image.  However, iDVD 8 warned me when burning the disk images that some utilities may not be able to burn a reliable dual layer disk copy and to use iDVD instead, does this include Disk Utility?
I always use Disk Utility to make copies, iDVD took almost 7 hours to burn the disk image, I can't afford to wait that long for each copy.  So what's the best strategy for burning dual layer DVDs?

subsequent copies burn in far less time immediately after the first provide you don't quit iDvd
If you know ahead of time you'll need more than a few copies, I'd recommend burning from a disc image to the desktop and reducing the burn speed (4x or lower) I prefer to use Roxio Toast myself. But others have had success with Apple's Disc Utilities as well.

  • Will iTunes recognize dual layer DVDs/drives for backing up purchases?

If I have a dual layer dvd in a drive that supports dual layer burning, will itunes be able to use it to its fullest capacity?

    DaddyPaycheck,
Just after i posted my message i thought i'd pop in a DL DVD in the drive, open Toast and see again what Toast would do.
Lo and behold, i check disk capacity in Toast and it shows the full 8GB. So i'm currently copying a 6GB DV file to the DL DVD ... so far so good. I want to see if it completes the task this time without errors.
I'll know within 15 minutes whether it worked. Holding my breath ....

  • Media write error for dual layer DVD burn

I am having a problem burning a dmg to a dual layer DVD using the internal DVD writer. I have tried both Disk Utility and SimplyBurns.
Both program s go through the preparation for the file, and when it attempts to burn the disk I get a 'media write error'. I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks. I have successfully burned both CDs and regular DVDs with the drive.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can fix this?
    Thanks

I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks.
    Try Verbatim DVD+R DL discs.

  • Dual Layer DVD drive in Power Mac G4?

    Hi,
I ordered a Power Mac G4 and I have an internal dual layer DVD drive with lightscribe built into it. I installed it in my PC awhile ago and it works fine but I want to know if it will work in a Power Mac G4 running OS X (Tiger/Leopard)? The model number is IDVD16DLS and it's manufactured by I/O Magic. It's a really good drive and I hope it works on Mac.

Optical drives sold by I/O Magic are usually manufactured by any of a number of electronics plants in China. The drive will undoubtedly function in your G4, but it may not respond to booting with the C key depressed or boot the computer after having been designated as the startup disk. I tried a Memorex (LG-manufactured) DVD±RW drive in a B&W G3 (Panther), and even with the PatchBurn profile, the only way to force it to boot from a bootable CD/DVD disk was to immediately close the tray, after it would spin up/down at startup and eject the disk. I removed that drive and installed a Pioneer DVR±RW drive like this one in black or beige. The Pioneer burner boots the computer without the extra persuasion. Tiger is more forgiving of a third-party drive, than the previous OS X versions. As for the LightScribe function, you'll probably need to look for third-party, Mac-compatible labeling software.

  • Best compression setting 90min movie on Dual Layer DVD

Okay, I admit, I am a total n00b at this...so sorry if you have to break things down into the most basic terms...
I am trying to get the BEST quality I can for my adobe Encore project (for ease of calculation, 90min movie and added features).  I was previously getting "exceeds dvd capacity" error in Encore.
I have decided to recompress and see what I can do to make it all fit, but first I want to re-evaluate my whole process...
the ultimate issue comes down to three things (i think)...
    1. CBR v VBR??  what is better and why?
    2. What Data Bit Rate to compress at and why?
    3. Single layer DVD vs Dual Layer DVD?  Which is better and why?
to begin the discussion, I'll tell you what I "know" and what I think.
It seems DVD players can only handle a max bit rate of 8mbps so I don't want to go over that and using a Dual layer disc I risk that it may not work on older players....also, the dual layer costs twice as much to duplicate (this sucks but money is not an issue at this point, quality is more important).  From what I have read, constant Bit Rate @ 8mbps will give me the Best possible image... 8 is the max and so to encode at 8 the entire time should be the best..  will i have any issues with this?  This is not an amateur home movie but rather an indie feature film so I want to get the best possible viewable product out to people.  I will have blu-ray questions to come later (thats what we are going to send to festivals).
any help would be greatly appreciated
    thanks so much...
    chris

    Okay, thanks for everyone's thoughts.
    Question....
I totally understand not wanting to waste space on a dvd IF there was extra room.... HOWEVER, a movie at 90min with menus, etc. BARELY fits on a dvd at a 6.8mbps VBR compression rate....
therefore....why not just fork out the extra couple bucks and just compress the whole thing at 8.0mbps 2pass CBR, slap it on a dual layer and even though there will be parts of the movie that will be higher than necessary, and there will be leftover space on the dual layer dvd.... you will be guaranteed to have the highest quality right?  heavy motion areas and more static areas will all be encoded at 8 and thus, the best....
am i wrong in thinking this?
and after some extensive reading and research....Although is says a dvd player can handle 9.8mbps..... it doesnt' seem safe to encode that high because a lot of players can't handle it.... what is everyone else's thoughts?
    I found this:
    Data rate
DVD-Video discs have a raw bitrate of 11.08 Mbit/s, with a 1.0 Mbit/s overhead, leaving a payload bitrate of 10.08 Mbit/s. Of this, up to 3.36 Mbit/s can be used for subtitles and a maximum of 9.80 Mbit/s can be split amongst audio and video. In the case of multiple angles the data is stored interleaved, and so there's a bitrate penalty leading to a max bitrate of 8 Mbit/s per angle to compensate for additional seek time. This limit is not cumulative, so each additional angle can still have up to 8 Mbit/s of bitrate available.
Professionally encoded videos average a bitrate of 4-5 Mbit/s with a maximum of 7–8 Mbit/s in high-action scenes. This is typically done to allow greater compatibility amongst players, and to help prevent buffer underruns in the case of dirty or scratched discs.
