Best dvd medium/brand for imac

Suddenly I'm having difficulty burning dvd's on my 2009 iMac w/snow leopard 10.6.8. When I try to send a slideshow created in iPhoto 11 to idvd the "revolution" screen will not show up unless I click on the project map and then the intro page icon.  Once I get it the intro screen and add the photo and music it will not burn the dvd from iDvd unless I save it as an image file and burn using disk utility.  I've worked with apple tech support and reinstalled both iPhoto and iDvd as well as cleared out all the caches with no success.  Additionally the img file will not burn with Toast Titanium.
Two questions: 1) has anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution: and 2) what type/brand of dvd is best as once I have burned the dvd via disk utility I am getting a high number of coasters with TDK dvd+R and dvd-R.
Thanks for any help
Scott

If you have an iLife retail disk with iDVD, I would certainly consider installing that on the new iMac - I will continue to use iDVD, there is nothing like it (at a reasonable consumer friendly price).
I'm a little confused about one thing: you said you created an m4v file - I always choose "movie to quicktime movie" with the settings I showed previously :
Since I don't use iPhoto, this is a guess: my guess would be that the new iPhoto 11 is no longer configured to work with iDVD since that app is no longer supported. As I said, I've never used the share button (not even in iMovie) since I prefer to choose the settings (and I try to use the most lossless as far as quality is concerned). So you should be able to continue to use iPhoto as long as you use the export option and then either edit further in iMovie, or go directly to iDVD.

Handbrake to copy to avi or mp4(I use it for watching my DVD's on the go, so my battery lasts for a longer time)
I think MP4 is better quallity.
To copy a DVD: simply use Toast (maybe withe popcorn, but I don't use it).

I have burned several DVDs onto TESCO Branded DVD-R discs.
None of which I tried to view on my in house Toshiba DVD player worked satisfacorily.
Not surprising. Just think of them as mini-frisbees!
Try one of the brands most of here use and recommend: Verbatim DVD-R (Sainsbury's sell those), Maxell or Fuji, and of course the best: Taiyo Yuden if you can find them.

  • Best DVD-R brands

I am having a problem searching for the best dvd-r material to use. I keep getting problems with canon dvd-r recording captures.
Can someone guide me in the recommened brands of DVD-R material?
I understand most people rely on Taiyo Yuden as the least problematic. Is this true?

OS X is not Windows and there is no need to "delete and reinstall" frequently
If you're non tech person or (like me) a bit lazy to perform tasks manually, get Onyx -> http://www.titanium.free.fr/ and clean up your system ocasionally.
For deleting applications use a tool like App Cleaner -> http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25276/appcleaner
Run "Permissions Repair" and a clean up before and after each major update; e.g. 10.6.5 -> 10.6.7.
Update to 10.6.8 too, as 10.6.7 is a bit sluggish.
I've never delete, format or reinstall since 2008 and performed just a system disk swap from the old MacBook to the new one when my 2011 MacBook Pro arrived.
That was like eating a pie.
Open old one, pull disk. Open new one and changed disk's. Startup and waiting 3 minutes for completing hardware detection. Performed all necesary updates. Cleaned system, doing a permissions repair, reboot and my system runs as designed and expected.
Needless to mention that I have NO issues and everything on my new MBPro runs fine, fast and smooth.

  • What is the best virus protection software for imac

Can someone suggest the best anti virus software for an intel based iMac?

If you are really running OS X "Leopard", you should be aware that Apple stopped providing updates for it years ago. On the other hand your profile also indicates you are using a Power Mac, and they do not use Intel CPUs. The good news about that is that the PowerPC platform has become so uncommon that they are extremely unlikely to be the target of any sort of malware or virus attempts. So, more information is required, but lacking that most of the following principles apply equally well to any computer.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up",  "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
The same precaution applies to Adobe Flash Player. Newly discovered Flash vulnerabilities appear almost weekly.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for iMac

is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for my imac?

You can simply google for that; I'm sure there'll be plenty - just make sure it specifically states that it is compatible with Mac and the OS version you are running. I've had a LaCie for a number of years; it is self powered with FW port (they no longer make this one unfortunately); here is their non-Bluray option they have now:

(Personally, I prefer self powered instead of bus powered). They also sell Bluray burners.

    Thanks

Thanks Rudegar.  The problem is my iMac covertoer went away and I cannot afford to have it replaced but I though a moitor would do.  Live in USA.  Nearly blind and need a monitor I can see (lighter screen needed).  Looked at Dells and they seem to be OK but so do a lot of them.  Only need a 20-22" screen.  The plan is to get a moini mac eventually (desk space i a premium around here) so would need a monitor that is good for thaty too.  Hve all the periferals I need and just need to have a good monitor to put in place.

  • What is the best external hard drive for iMac time machine?

I need to purchase 1TB external hard drive to use as a backup drive for iMac (lion) Time Machine. I currently have the Lacie little disk but I need more storage. All I need is a simple USB connection.

I've been happy with my silver FW Western Digital drives, I use two daisy chainned together (1TB, 2TB).  These were the ones sold for mac's so they have a aluminum look to them.  Only a bit more expensive than their black USB brothers.

  • Good dvd creator app for iMac

I'm looking for a solid app to create DVD's that will contain more that one movie with a menu of my choosing with background music. Most seem to fail with adding the background music on the burned DVD. Any help is welcomed

The very best video DVD authoring application, IMO, is iDVD. Granted it's been discontinued but there really is no substitute that can produce as professional looking, multi menu product as iDVD. iDVD offers nearly 90 different themes to choose from. As of now iDVD is compatible with Yosemite.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
I've not been able to test any of the other apps as I haven't found any that have a demo version.
When the time comes when iDVD is no longer compatible with Yosemite or its successor I have an external HD that has Mavericks on it which I'll boot into to use.
