Best DVI to USB in 2011?

I am a web programmer with a macbook pro. I have two monitors, one I can hook up via dvi, the other one I was thinking to hook up via dvi to usb. My concern is that one of my monitors is rotated 90 degrees, whereas the other one is sitting normally. Most of the solutions seemed to be extending a previous display rather than adding a new one. If that's the case perhaps I could extend the laptop display to the normal sitting monitor and have the tall monitor with it's own display.
I was wondering if there are any solutions that would set the usb connected monitor as it's own display, rather than an extension of a previous display? And which usb to dvi adapter is best?

NOTE:  The HP provided drivers are still being used, and they are most likely the root of the problem.  It was HP's decision to hook into System Preferencers -> Printer -> Scan.  How it behaves in there is still HP responsibility.
And to put it into perspective, I have an HP 1536dnf MFP printer/scanner/fax on my network that works just fine with the System Preferences -> Printer -> Scanner.  Initially the scanner didn't work at all on Lion, but around Christmas (or January) HP released new drivers that fixed the scanner support.
So just because HP decided to use the System Preferences -> Printer -> Scanner interface does not make it Apple's problem, as HP has shown they can make this work for "Some" of their printers.
Having said that, MajorMatt has a very good suggestion of using VueScan if it eliminates your frustrations.

What settings do I need to get best quality Word (mac office 2011) to Acrobat 9?And what is best method, save as from Word, or create from Acrobat?

Thank you Steve! For the benefit of anyone following this thread, if Acrobat tab does not show in Word
This add-in may be disabled in Word. We can try to re-enable it:
    =============
    1. Open Word program.
    2. Click the Office button. Then click the Word Options button.
    3. Click Add-Ins.
    4. From the Manage dropdown list select Disabled Items and click Go.
    5. Check the list for PDFMakerOfficeAddin:
    1)      If it is listed, then select it and click Enable. Close all dialog boxes and restart the Word program.
    2)      If it is not listed, then make sure that PDFMOfficeAddin.dll is located in the ‘…/Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 8.0/PDFMaker/Office’ folder. If the file is missing, then reinstall Acrobat.

  • Best External hard drive for 2011 macbook air

i recently recieved a 2011 macbook air and heard that it is easier on the computer to use an external hard drive
if this is true what would be the best reasonably priced one to buy?
    thanks

    http://www.hgst.com/external-drives/mobile/touro-mobile-pro
This I have found is a very good "bang for the buck" drive. 7200 RPM drive, and USB 3.0, if later you can advantage of it.  If you want anything faster, you will have to raise your budget quite a bit going with a Thunderbolt drive, in which case I would recommend the Seagate GoFlex.
You may also want to consider a LaCie's Rugged Triple in 500 GB 7200 RPM configuration, and use the $29.00 Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter.

  • 30'' Cinema Display with mini-display-port to dual link DVI adapter usb hub

Hi all, I don't know if any one of you experience this issue and can help me.
I am using an unibody macbook pro (late2008 model) to connect to a 30'' cinema display via the famous $100 mini diaplay port to dual link DVI adapter. I have connected the usb cable from the ACD to the adapter and the usb cable of the adapter to my macbook pro. This setting works fine under OSX 10.5.7.
When I am using Windows Vista under bootcamp the USB hub on the back of the ACD doesn't work. The device manager of Vista shows an excalmatory mark besides the device "Generic usb hub"; and it reports a problem of "the device cannot be started".
I doubted this problem is due to Windows cannot recognise the $100 adapter as a "generic usb hub"; and apple has not release a driver for this $100 adapter for windows.
Since my MBP only has 2 usb ports and the $100 adapter already occupied one, it would be very much helpful if the usb hub of the ACD can work just like in OSX. Can anyone think of any suggestion?
Much appreciated for reading this post and thank you.

i don't have an answer for you, but i feel your pain. very frustrating when this happens with Apple products and Vista/Bootcamp. wish they were more compatible, for it would make things so much easier for the consumer.

  • DVI to ADC Adapter + Mini DVI to DVI Adapter = usb ports don't work?

I have a 23" Cinema with the ADC plug. I've been using it with the DVI to ADC adapter for many years, though I did not use any of the monitor's usb ports during this time. I recently bought a new Macbook, so now I have am combining a Mini DVI to DVI adapter with the DVI to ADC adapter. The display works fine, but now I find the usb ports on the monitor do not work. I've checked all the pins involved and they are all straight and look normal.
Does this have anything to do with the double adapter situation, or could it just be that the monitor's usb ports are aging and haven't been used in a long time? Or is it possible these ports do not support usb 2.0 devices?

    Thank you Malcolm.
It's true I cannot adjust the display's brightness using the buttons on the monitor. But I can put the Macbook to sleep, both when the adapter's usb cable is plugged in and when it's not.
So if the usb circuitry has gone bad, will this cause me any other problems, or can I just ignore it? Right now I am trying to choose an external hard drive to buy, so I'm taking stock of my available ports. I don't think I'd put a big hard drive on a usb 1.1 port anyways.

  • Best Practice Attaching USB drive to VM

Since USB passthru is no longer supported in OVM, what is the best practice and or recommendation for loading large amounts of data to a VM from an external USB drive?

thxceej, welcome to the discussion area!
Suggest that you connect the drive directly to your MBP, then open
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Click to select your drive on the left and then click Repair Disk at the lower right of the window and let the process run. It may take 30-60 minutes depending on how much data you have on the disk.
When the disk has been repaired, power down the complete network...all devices. Connect the drive back to the USB port on the Time Capsule. Then start the modem first, then your router, then devices one at a time until everything is powered back up.
    See if that helps.

  • What's Best - DVI or VGA?

Just received my new Mac Mini which I plan to connect to my plasma monitor and use as a media center.
I have the option of connecting into either my TV's DVI or VGA port - which one will give me the best picture?
Appreciate your advice so I can buy the correct cable.
    Thanks!
    SM

    Neither is better.
Try both, see which works better with your monitor.
That does seem a strange reply. Why would you think that digital would not normally be the better option? Especially with Fortuny's explanation of the double conversion occurring?
Not to mention, it is a bit expensive to buy the VGA adapter, more so since the DVI adapter comes with the Mac mini.

  • Best ram for macbook pro 2011?

I am thinking about upgrading my macbook pro 2011 with 8gb or 16gb (overkill?) of ram. Which is the best ram/bang for the buck?

I upgraded to Crucial 16 GB on my MB Pro 6 months ago and have never, ever, even once been sorry or less than amazed.
Of course, a Crucial 512 GB SSD does not hurt, either. They work together seamlessly.  Nice Mac, nice Mac.
12 seconds to boot up from full Shut Down? Too cool ............................................................................... ..
    Leonardosanti says.
PS FYI: My old Apple-supplied 500 GB hard drive is now separately enclosed and makes an excellent full backup. Using SuperDuper to clone, it is bootable albeit as a spinning disc hard drive it runs much slower. Had my old Snow Leopard system and files on it. Jumped to a clean install of Mountain Lion. Did all this myself, glad its done, whew, successfully. The Ram and the SSD are gems, like the Crucial support people.
PPS Yes, these were expensive improvements. Ouch but ... Worth it.

  • Best solution for usb storage mounting ?

    Hey there
i installed arch on my wifes computer, keeping it xfce4 for right now to  conserve resources. my daughter has a usb camera that i can mount via fstab (sometimes) and mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 yadda yadda.
is there a way i can simplify this so that it automounts ala ubuntu style ?
i have looked at susbmount and automount . what would be the best way to go here?

nephish wrote:cool, does sda1 stay at a permission that will allow users to mount / unmount ?
With ivman? Yes, I believe so, although I would try to stay away from it. In the past I've experienced corruption problems. I'm sure its fixed now but personally, I feel safer not using it all.
I run dbus and hal (added in that order to daemons() array in rc.conf) to dynamically sync the fstab with the proper entries once something is plugged in and xfce4-mount-plugin to manually mount the device. It sits in the task bar and you can mount/umount each device by clicking on it and then clicking on the corresponding device icon. Its in aur.

What is best way to upgrade LabVIEW 2012 from LabVIEW 2011 ?
      a) Install 2012 over 2011
      b) Remove 2011 and then install 2012

    Hi GE,
as LV2012 still is in beta state you should probably use a different computer than is used for your productive LV2011 environment

  • Best 802.11ac usb adapter?

Looking for some guidance here... I need a USB adapter to "test" and demonstrate the 3700 802.11ac AP's in front of customers and I want something that is going to give me the best throughput possible... but also be reliable.
I know I will need to be in close proximity of the AP and I know that I would get better throughput with an internal wireless adapter but one of the requirements is that i need to demo with a USB adapter.
What have you guys used and what would you recommend I use or stay away from?
    Thanks in advance!

    Ended up purchasing a Rosewill AC1200UBE 2.4/5GHz USB3.0 adapter on Amazon ~$40
The adapter specs state "Data Rates of up to 300Mbps" for 2.4GHz and "up to 867Mbps" for 5GHz
Testing between that and another laptop, through a Meraki MR34 showed actual throughput of 400Mbps from 10 feet away and just shy of 300Mbps 2 (drywall) offices away with the door closed.  25-30 feet down the hall in our office building I got about 175-185mbps throughput.
Not too bad, considering it's only rated for a Data Rate of 867Mbps and not the full 1.3Gbps.  I'm guessing the adapter only supports 2 spatial streams.
Anyway... just thought I'd throw that info out there in case anyone can use it.
Attached is a snapshot from DUMeter running on the laptop with the wireless card.  DU Meter running on the laptop that the traffic generator was pointing toward also showed the same results.

I can't figure out how to post a message to start a new topic; I only see how to "reply". So I'll write my question in here and hope I get info onhow to post and on my question. We have downloaded the Vcast Media Manager to our laptop 3 times and each time it shows up as having been downloaded and installed. But when we click on it, nothing happens. We can't get it toOpen no matter how we go about it. If it makes any difference, my phone is an Incredible 2. Thanks for any information on both issues.
