Best Epson Driver

Using LR 4.1 on a MacBook with 10.5.2. Have tried all the usual things, yet still have inconsitent prints. My question is, that since LR 4.1 has compatability with the Epson 3.x drivers, would it be better to continue to use these drivers, or use the 6.x driver. Using an R1800.

I've been advocating chucking the entire Epson folder, installing just the beta 6x driver for 3800's- and think it may apply to the 1800 also. You'll save a Gig of HD space, too. Then, do not apply a Mac-generated "update" to Epson drives, as it may set you back, as it did me.

Best optical drive?

Any suggestions as to the best optical drive available? Heard of Lightscribe for labling flip side of disc. Is it Mac compatible?

There really doesn't appear to be a "best" optical drive. If you intend to replace the internal optical drive you'll want to check out xlr8yourmac.com which has user reports on things like: does the drive fit in the Mac without modification, will it boot the Mac with the System disk, does it burn music CDs with iTunes, and so forth. It is a great site for Mac users upgrading their computers.
Lightscribe drives are Mac compatible though the CD labeling software you get with the drive may not be Mac compatible. There is Mac compatible software available though. Be aware that the lightscribe CDs are a bit more expensive than regular CDs and that burning the image takes a L-O-N-G time. I have one on my PC at work - and print my CD labels with an Epson CD printer.

Printing from Epson driver on a different brand of paper

On the Epson driver, media type option has options just for Epson papers. I want to print on a paper from a different brand. Selecting a profile for this different paper from the mode menu is bypassing that media type options - for example when the "Epson Premium Semigloss" is selected from the media type menu, if I choose a Hahnemühle profile from the mode box, is this Hahnemühle profile bypassing Epson paper choice selected from the media type option?

The Media Type setting and the Profile choice are two separate things. The Media Type setting sets the optimum amount of ink laydown for that type of media. When you're using Epson paper, they've tested that model printer with that paper to come up with the best starting point for making the paper profile.
When you're using a non Epson, third party paper in your printer, you will never find Media choices to match. What you will find are recommendations from the third party manufacturers on which Epson media choice settings are the closest for your paper/printer combo. If you're making your own profiles, you need to know this to choose the right setting before printing your target. If you're using, say, a canned profile from Hahnenmühle, you need to choose the same media type setting they used when making the profile in order for that profile to be valid.
So, to be clear, you need to do two things when printing to a third party paper. 1. You have to choose the correct media type according to what the third party manufacturer recommends, and 2. You have to choose the correct media profile for the paper you're printing on. One does not override the other. They work in concert to give you the best (hopefully) print possible.

SL + Epson Stylus Photo R260 + Epson driver: no way to set draft mode

Hi,
I'm trying to get an iMac(intel) / Epson R260 working correctly after a recent upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6. The printer is connected directly to the iMac (i.e., not to Time Machine).
The Gutenprint driver that came with SL produces awful results, so I downloaded the Epson driver from Epson site (10.6 compatible). It produces much better results, but for some reason it's printing in draft mode . . . +and I can't find the quality control anywhere!!+
I think I've been through every submenu within the Print dialog; in particular, the Print Settings that appear to contain printer-specific settings. Does such a control exist?
The Gutenprint driver offers scads of quality settings - unfortunately, as I say, the prints are completely washed out even at 'Best' quality. My client is also intimidated by the Gutenprint options and would prefer to use the ones she's more familiar with from 10.4; namely, the Epson-supplied driver.

The print settings menu is where the quality control should be found. In this menu, there should be media type and print quality pulldown menu's. The GutenPrint driver will have a similar menu however it should say 'Printer Features" instead of 'Print Settings".

Upgrade EPSON driver (C2800): text no longer prints from preview

Hi,
After installing the new EPSON driver under Lion, I can no longer print PDF's from Preview correctly.
When I print a file, only the graphics are printed, the text is not present.
I have tried printing several different documents, I have reinstalled the printer two times, but the problems remains.
The printer (Epson AL-C2800) is connected via its network port, to a Time Capsule.
When I print from my Windows 7 desktop, all is fine, so I assume the problem is situated on my MacBook Pro.
Has anybody an idea how to resolve this issue? It is very annoying, because I use my MBP most of the time.

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford. Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again. If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine. If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

i don't have any experience with DLNA TV's but i recently moved my iTunes library to a NAS. streaming content to airport express remote speakers and TV2 works great. however, i have all my gear hardwired to my time capsule (except the airport express) so i'm not sure how well streaming e.g. HD movies to TV over wifi works.
i have a Synology DiskStation 411j and am very happy with it.

Best hard drive for use with Time Machine

Has anyone determined what the best external hard drive is for use with Time Machine? Is there a particular one that works exceptionally well with Time Machine, or is it much of a muchness?
I'm looking for a Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 drive that STAYS ON all the time, and doesn't automatically spin down or spin up like the rubbish WD My Book drives do.

I can't tell you if it is the "best" hard drive for you to use with TM, but I'm quite happy with the 500 GB Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo TurboUSB I bought recently. It is quiet, quite inexpensive for the capacity (I paid about $120 for one on sale at Fry's), & completely compatible with OS X & TM.
Best of all for me, it automatically powers down when my iMac sleeps. It also spins down after a time if the Mac's Energy Saver preference "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked; otherwise it remains spun up until the Mac is put to sleep or switched off.
It comes with "Turbo" USB & Memeo "AutoBackup" software, neither of which I installed. (The box didn't claim these extras came in a Mac version but both Mac & Windows versions were included on the CD.) Out-of-the-box, I reformatted the drive with the Apple Partition Map scheme & two partitions, a 160 GB one for cloning my internal drive & the rest for TM. The drive works perfectly for both uses & seems quite fast, as one would expect from a 7200 rpm SATA drive.

Can't remove Gimp drivers to install new Epson driver

I just bought a new Photo printer (Epson Stylus Photo R1800.)
I go to add the printer in the Printer Setup Utility
click Add (The printer appears in the Printer Browser)
I select it; Then it wants me to select the driver from the list in the "Print Using" drop down.
The driver doesn't appear on the list.
I get a ESPON list but only the Gimp list.
ESPON tech support said these 'old' drivers may be conflicting with the new one.
SO, I try to delete old drivers. I delete ESPON folder from Library>Printers. RESTART.
EPSON - Gimp still there.
SO, I also delete Gimp.pkg from Library>Receipts. RESTART
EPSON - Gimp still there.
How do I get rid of these Gimp Epson drivers so I have a chance of loading the new drivers?
I have loaded the driver from the Epson CD 5 times and it doesn't show up anywhere.
Any hints?

There is no conflict. You ADD using a different method - After clicking ADD, don't immediately accept the printer when it appears in the browser - instead, click More Printers, then select Epson USB or Epson Firewire, then select Format for: All. Now you are using the Epson driver instead of the Gimp-Print one. Deleting the Gimp-Print drivers won't change this procedure.

OSX 10.7 sporadic freezes (because of Epson driver?)

MBP 17", SSD 256, OS X 10.7.1, Epson driver version 5.2
The display often freezes wenn using the epson printer AL-C1900 (Network-Printer) in different appliances for printing (the print-job done by the printer is ok). Nothing is working after this event, even the appliance-managing-task (cmd+alt+esc) doesn't work. Only the emergency-stop by pressing the on/off-butten for a while and restarting the machine helps. But sometimes, in the same situation, the printing process workes very well.
The installed Epson driver is the latest version from apple recommended.

Have you tried checking with Epson to see if they have a newer driver yet? Sounds like you need an updated printer driver, and Epson is the only one who can provide that. Unfortunately, "wait until Epson releases an update and don't print until then" is not much of a solution, but the only other one is to downgrade to an older system that their driver will work with, and that's a lot of work and inconvenience.
BTW, note that every time you force restart your machine, you may be damaging data on the hard drive. You need to repair it, or at least verify it, with Disk Utility every time that happens. Hold down command-R while starting up to enter Lion's recovery mode, then use Disk Utility from there to repair the hard drive.

I am primarily a LaCie d2 triple interface user (3-year old 320 Gb, 2-year old 500 GB, 1-year old 1 TB, and 1-month old 2 TB drives currently in use). For the most part I have been well satisfied with these drives even after having a power supply on the 1 TB model "weaken" on me to the point where the unit no longer worked in the "auto" mode. Since LaCie support provided a correct diagnosis of the problem within one work day, I was able to confirm the problem immediately, and they had a new replacement power supply in my hands in about 3 days, I have naught but high praise for their support people and remain a satisfied customer.
As I will probably need to replace the 2 TB drive in Oct or Nov of '09 as my iTunes/TV storage drive, I was looking at the LaCie 4 TB multi-drive unit but must admit I prefer the look of the CalDigit 3 TB unit. However, I am not sure I am willing to spend that much extra for the CalDigit's smaller configuration. Still, only time will tell and it is much too soon to make an preliminary, let alone, final decision.

Best Hard Drive Size, Brand, etc.

I just purchased two Seagate 400gb external firewire hard drives (model#ST3400801CB-RK), one for storing my analog video footage and allowing me to have several imovie projects available at one time, and the second hard drive for backing up my 80gb mac mini and the first 400gb hard drive. I haven't opened the boxes yet, so my question is: do you have a recommendation as to the best hard drives out there for my uses? I don't want to purchase the wrong thing. If you think Seagate is good, I'll keep what I bought and start my movie projects this weekend. Thank you for your time.

I have all my internal and external disks journaled and haven't noticed any adverse effects from this.
I do get occasional dropped frames (0-6-10 frames per hour) but I think journaling does not cause them. Some tapes have 0 dropped frames while some tapes have a few so I think the tape and bad spots on the tape play a much bigger role there.
Sure, it would be very interesting to run a test by importing a few tapes a few times with journaling on and off and then compare the amount of dropped frames. ...but there are so many other variables (the HD's fragmentation and self calibration, network activity, etc) that I haven't bothered to do this...
Journaling does need a minor overhead but AFAIK this is neglible with modern HDs with big caches and iMovie work which needs 3.6 MB/s (in practice this must be doubled to at least 7 MB/s to take care of occasional hiccups in the system).
I prefer the slight added robustness at the expense of minimal speed decrease that journaling offers.
But in the end I think this does not matter much either way. I'd hope some magazine runs a carefully planned test about this.

Epson 740 Inkjet won't print from Epson Driver!

Hi All,
I've just recently upgraded to Tiger, from Jaguar, and all was well...until today! My colour printer is an Epson Stylus 740 and it was printing perfectly yesterday but now the all jobs are "Stopped"!
If I click on "Start Jobs" the progress bar appears then, after a couple of seconds, vanishes and I'm back to "Jobs Stopped" with the file still in the print queue. That's it! No other indication of a fault or problem.
I have now configured the printer via Gimp Print (V5.0.0) and it works fine. So the printer is ok but I'd like to use the Epson driver as I'm used to it and know how to get the results I want.
If this was OS 9 I'd suspect a corrupted file in the spool folder but, even though I've used OS X for years, I don't even know if there still is a spool folder! I certainly can't find one.
Any ideas?

There are tons of posts on similar problems in this forum. Do a search for stopped jobs and you'll see. There are a lot of suggested fixes, it sounds like some work for some people and not for others. Also, although it sounds like it's usually Epson printers, it's not always. And it's all different models. I have an Epson Stylus CX6600. I haven't had a chance to try all the fixes yet, but one that did work for a couple months for me was this:
Before printing, go into your application's "Page setup" option and make sure that the "Format for" says your printer and not "Any printer." I'm not sure why this works but it's even on the Epson tech support website in their troubleshooter. You will have to do this for every application and it quit working for me after I updated to 10.4.5, but maybe it could be a temporary fix for you as well.
Please post if you come up with a more permanent solution!

CS2 printing broken with new Epson driver and/or 10.5.5?

I've been using InDesign CS2 for fine art printing for the last year (CS3 printing was totally broken) to and Epson R2400. Originally, I had been using Photoshop, but I found printing from CS2 gave the same results and I had better control over crops, etc. within a specific framed size. InDesign CS2 and Photoshop gave the same great color results. Then, this last week, I updated both my OS (from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5) and my Epson driver (as 10.5.5 wouldn't see my R2400 via FireWire). Now, when I print from CS2, I get crappy prints. Not as crap as CS3, but WAY crappier than Photoshop.
Has anyone else experienced this? Such a bummer!!!!
I wonder if InDesign CS4 is broken too? Anyone know if they've fixed the printing issues in CS4 (not holding my breathe as I'm sure they were rushing to get CS4 out the door just as much as they were CS3).

Got it working again. All I did to fix it (and match the same output from Photoshop) was, in the driver, under Color Matching, I selected "Epson Color Controls" (and then turned off color management in Printer Color Management).
Not sure what has changed, but this worked for me. Haven't tested in InDesign CS3 or CS4 yet.

Epson R280 printer won't print after Apple Epson driver update

I have a 27" iMac running Mountain Lion. I use an Epson R280 printer to print directly onto CD/DVD media. Have used this printer daily for over three years. After an Apple Epson Driver update, I get a 'communication error' message and cannot print. Uninstalled and reinstalled printer. Power cycled printer and rebooted iMac. No Change. Hooked up same printer to my MacBook Pro running Mavericks and printer works. Ideas?

Thanks, Eric. I had tried that previously, but had no luck. I would add the printer back in after Reset, and it still didn't work. The real key step which I found from a previous solution was taking the existing print drivers in Library/Printers/Epson and trashing that folder and then emptying the trash. With those drivers gone, when I rebooted and then powered up and added the printer, Apple prompted me to download new drivers, and 'Voila!'. Back up and running. Thanks much.
