Best Export Codec for Monitor Viewing

Hey everyone.
A quick question i hope, i am giving a presentation and showing some video clips i have edited using FCP Studio, i am having a problem however when exporting. All the video export files are very low quality; they appear very jagged with very pronounced horizontal lines across the image no matter what size i view them at.
I have tried using different codec’s, but none as yet really give me any better results, can anyone suggest any codec’s or any advice relating to this matter.
Thanks in advance, regards, James.

what are the captured clips settings? highligt a clip in the timeline and press Cmd-9 ... tell us what it says under Format tab for:
Vid Rate, Frame Size, Compressor, Pixel Aspect, Anamorphic and Field Dominance
what are the sequence settings? with the timeline or canvas window active, press Cmd-0 ... tell us what it says under General tab for:
Frame Size, Pixel Aspect Ratio, Anamorphic 16:9, Field Dominance, Editing Timbase and Compressor
finally, exactly what are the settings you are using for your export ? give us all the details equivalent to the above ... also tell us how you are doing the export (Quicktime Movie, Using Compressor..., Using Quicktime Conversion...)
thanks
Andy

  • Best Export Options for QT5 Viewing

I run a site for Mac OS 7 users and want to upload some videos there in QuickTime 5 format (the latest version for Mac OS 7). I am working on a G4 running Tiger and QuickTime 7 Pro.
What are some of your opinions on the best export options for QT5 viewing, distrubed over the internet, at say 320x240?

Alas, the data rate of these two video codecs must be a lot higher (at least 25% more than the more modern codecs) to ensure a good visual experience.
A neat html "trick" is to encode with these higher data rates but at a smaller dimension. Instead of 320X240 use 160X120. The smaller dimensions help keep the file size down. During html playback use the object and embed tag to scale="tofit" and enlarge the playback area.
Your src (source) tag dimensions are larger than the original source file. Using scale="tofit" tags the file plays at the designated size instead of the original (160X120) size.
The pages hosted for .Mac users (iWeb and Homepage) use the opposite tag (scale="aspect") that fit the source to the template of the page. One of mine as an example:

  • HDV: best export format for client viewing?

I am working on a project in HDV 1080i (1440).
What is the best export format to create a sample for a client to view- one that will give the proper aspect ratio.
I've tried everything I can think of, and the export is still squashed 1440 and not full 1920
I am a pretty experienced Motion user.....please give me the video and the output settings.
    thanks!

hemmster- thanks I really appreciate the specific info
I dont mean to be dense but....I don't see those buttons anywhere in Motion 4. When I go to File>export what I see is:
    Export: (quicktime)
    Use: set to current project
When I click on the "options" button I am taken to the export options window with 2 tabs: "Video/audio" and "output"
Can you please translate your settings into those parameters....? I am assuming that under "video/audio" that compressor is H.264. The advanced button lets me set the data rate.
The Output tab lets you choose from a full range of resolutions. I could select "Custom" and set to 1280. No options for deinterlacing to be seen. Interlacing is a big problem with this project....
I have read the complete manual (twice) and the peachpit books. There is little info on this subject to be found there, so I am depending on the kindness of strangers
    Thanks, you are awesome........!

  • Best export type for web viewing

I just bought a Eyetv and recoreded me playing halo 2 on my 360. i was wondeirng what the best export for posting something on youtube would be. the choices i have are, quicktime movie, mpeg-4, h.264,divX avi, windows media, AAc audio and apple lossless audio. i was just wondering what the best is to post videos on youtube. i tried one but the quality didnt turn out so well once it was on youtube but before that it was clear. is it just youtubes uploads?

i think it is just youtube decreasing the quality so it will stream quickly ... i always use quicktime movie though ... no particular reason for that though!

  • Best export codec for details

I have some footage we shot of a guy against a green screen. It looks fine in premiere but so far any kind of codec I try to use to export the movie ends up losing a lot of detail. It just ends up with a very soft, somewhat blurry look to the guy. I've noticed this before whenever I've tried to export from premiere. What is the best codec to use to keep as much detail as possible? Thanks.

Nevermind. After much experimenting I found it was due to exporting at the wrong pixel aspect ratio.

  • Best export settings for DNxHD?

    Hey guys,
I'm working with R3D files (4KHD) in CS6 and need to export them for grading/editing in DNxHD at 1080p. Any tips on the best export settings for this?
Also - is it necessary to downconvert the 4KHD in some way to 1080p before the export process? The files I'm ending up with are a noticeably poorer quality than the original; I'm not sure if this is due to an error I've made during the conversion or if its a natural part of using the codec?
    Thanks if you can help!

For now, it would be on my own website or a clients website. But there may
be another possibility, I have a client that already has some videos
available for viewing on their website, looks like they are YouTube videos
that play on their site, and there is an option to "Watch on YouTube". So I
guess I would love some recommended export settings for a straightforward
video clip on my website, and if I need to explore the YouTube preset in
Premiere, let me know. Thank you, I really appreciate your answers and

  • What are the best export settings for a HD video in Premier Pro CS4?

    Hi!
I've been having so much trouble with this issue and it's something that continually frustrates my boss. I have a HD video the settings for it are
    FPS 23.98
    1920 x 1080, then a few lines down it says 1408 x 792
    16 bit,
    2 channels
    48000 Hz
What should the settings be when I make a new sequence?
When I look at it in the window in Premiere Pro I have to contantly 'shrink' the image to fit the window, is that something I should be doing or does it indicate the sequence settings are incorrect?
But more importantly what should the export settings be? I exported a 4 minute long video and the size was 1 GB, I know that's too big.
I need to export it without loosing any quality and export another one that meets the Youtube and Vimeo limits on size.
Vimeo is 500 MB per week, sometimes I upload 4 videos per week. I think Youtube you can only upload 500 MB at a time.
I need to get smaller sizes with loosing the least amount of quality possible AND the best export settings for quality, so I guess I have 3 separate questions-
What are the best sequence settings for HD video?
What are the best export settings for HD without loosing any quality?
What are the best export settings for the size to come out around 500 MB with loosing the least amount of quality possible?
    Thank You!

On the above thread I used the 5th anwer, and it's going to take about 7 hours to export a 4 minute video :/

    It Stands for "Coder Decoder."
Your format is like a container for your video file. Certain containers can hold certain codecs and not others. Other containers can hold other codecs. Sometimes different containers can hold the same codecs.
This might be a bad analogy but I'll give it a try.
A coffe cup (container) can hold pretty much any liquid you drink, where a red solo cup (container) won't hold scolding water. So, the coffe cup would be your container of choice most likely because it has the most options for liquids (codecs). But, you might want a red solo cup for just a single crappy beer at a party (a moderate quality streaming video on the web). In that case, you don't need all the optoins of another container.
In Premiere Pro CC H.264 is a Container and the Codec in one option. This has been streamlined for web distrobution of video to be played in browsers without things like Flash or special players.
Were as if you choose the QuickTime Container there are over 40 codec optoins (at least on my machine with additinal ones installed) but you may run into an issue where your browser doesn't support QuickTime playback.
I would say that your container is for compatability with players and your codec is taken into consideration when looking at the quality of the compression.
Yesteraday I wrote a blog entery on Exporting from Premiere Pro and found that the MPEG-4 codec inside of the QuickTime container gave me much richer colors than the H.264 container/codec option.
I posted the link before but here it is:

  • Best export settings for video for web

Can anyone give me some advice on the best export settings for a short video that is to be viewed on the web? I have some short, say 2 minute videos that need to be placed on a website and need a reasonable file size. What would the best Format and Preset options be in Premiere? Would it be helpful to utilize After Effects to reduce file size? Thank you in advance to anyone who has some advice!!

  • Best quality .AVI for PC viewing

How can i export with best quality AVI for PC viewing. HAS to be AVI. I use the expert settings with keyframe of 10 and 100 kb/sec max, and it is very "blocky".. How to improve the quality.

i created a login just to reply to you cuz i was trying to do the same. i found the answer on: http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/itc/resources/powerpointav/pptvideo.pdf
basically, use "expert settings" "movie to AVI" "options" "settings" "cinepak" "millions of colors" "high" "30 fps" "key frame every 300 frames" "limit data to 400kbytes/sec"
following the above instruction, i was able to export a movie to a decent size avi file that plays on wmp on a pc. (i didn't use sound cuz i didn't have any but there is instruction for sound on the pdf file)
i use a mac but have to create videos that can be viewed on any computer and can be used on a powerpoint presentation. i was so happy when i found a way to make good quality (actually i used "best" rather than "high" under quality), not choppy video for pc and mac viewing.
    hope this helps!

  • Best export option for Sound Designer

    Hi everyone,
I am working on a new short film and I am working with a Sound Designer and composer.  We want to create a 5.1 mix for the film (which I have never done before).  So I am trying to figure out what would be the best export option for him to work with to make his life easier.
Providing him with just a ProRes export won't help him match up to my cuts in the time line since he doesn't use FCP X.  So my thought is that we will have matching files and folder structure for both video and audio before I start editing.  But what I am not understanding is once I have a complete rough cut, how do I get him a cut list so that he can totally match up my cuts with the same audio files on his system?
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

See this pic for an example of how my exports turn out:

First off, the titling style is not ideal for DV (or DVD). That is, your font should be a bit fatter (or, at least, bold) and perhaps 1-2 point sizes larger. (This is all because the DV codec makes titles look like s--t if the font size is small and narrow)
Also, for your LiveType files, make sure FCP is interpreting your alpha channel correctly. For every LiveType file placed in your timeline, select it, then press Command-9 to bring up the Item Properties dialog. In the column for Alpha, make sure it says it says Black. If, for instance, it reads Straight, Control-click [right-click] on Straight, then select Black from the contextual menu. You should notice your text 'popping out' a little more. You'll have to re-render, of course.
Also, in QuickTime Player, press Command-, (that's  + comma) to bring up QT's preferences. Make sure that the box for Use High Quality Video Setting when available is checked. (In order to get this working, it's probably best to set this, then restart QT - or close, then open, all movies). With the High Quality flag always used, your titling should always look better in QT player. (That is, there is no change made to your actual file, but at least when previewing, you'll get a better idea of things)
After you've made these changes, export as you were (Current Settings) and let us know if you see any improvements.

  • What is the best export settings for mini DV?

    Hi folks,
Love this forum, it has been a huge help for a novice.  I am looking for answers to a more tailored question.  I believe this will help others too!
What are the best export settings for mini DVs (now in mov format) for the following uses and how do I input these settings:
    1. archive an exact duplicate without any quality loss of an imported mini DV tape.  My goal is to have the best quality/duplicate archived digital version of the original mini DV tape for later editing/use?
    2. the best quality version of the mini dv tape for viewing on media devices such as WDLive, boxee box, pivos xios, etc?
I really appreciate you reading and considering response.

First, I do NOT write back to tape... so only have a few saved links with no personal experience... but my "general" understanding is that you simply play your timeline with Firewire output active and press the record button on your tape deck
2nd, read below for a "trick" that is required to export to tape

  • Best export settings for HD video playback on computer?

I have shot my video on 1080p witha DSLR and edited it in premiere pro. I exported the video in .mp4 format.
Now i imported the video in after effects and added loads of animation. I want to export it to the best quality for playback ON COMPUTER ONLY. Which is the best export settings for this purpose.
I rendered it in .avi and my 12 minute video had a size of 55GB after render and did not play smoothly in the computer.. PLEASE HELP WITH THE BEST SETTINGS for the above purpose.

You messed up. You should NOT have rendered MP4 out of Premiere to use in AE. You're adding compression and quality loss in between stages. BAD video person!
The easiest thing to do would be to import your Premiere project in AE. That way it can use the original footage too. If, for some reason, you can't do that, you should render a lossless file out of Premiere. Speaking of lossless files, that's what you rendered out of AE. This page explains your large AE file issue.
Anyway, take that large file you render out of AE into the Adobe Media Encoder and render out your final compressed file. Either H.264 or WMV should work well for playback.
