Best ExpressCard for the MBP

I think it's time for me to get a wireless card. I don't care about which service provider it's on, I just want the best performance. I travel all over the country for work so coverage is important. I'd rather have the ExpressCard but will use the USB dongle if it's better. TIA.

dawiyo,
Notice that I didn't even mention Cingular. Nothing against them, and they have a fine network, but I think Verizon's is better and more comprehensive over the largest area possible.
I mentioned that I used Verizon at one time. This was during a lengthy tour of the US and (just a bit of) Canada with an opera company from the UK, and we covered the entire US. Really. With Verizon, the only "dead spots" I encountered, where no data connection of any kind could be made, was in Northern Maine (on the way to New Brunswick), then going from the Dakotas through Wyoming, and then North to Montana. In both cases, connections could be made once in a town or city (crossing the border into Canada in the first case, Gillette WY, Billings, etc. in the second), but absolutely nothing in the "wastelands" in between.
In one case during the tour, we were in a mountainous region of far-western Virginia. The entire cast, crew and orchestra was completely cut off as far as mobile phone service for several hours; no contact with the outside world, regardless of carrier. Once back on the road, cellular service continued to be unavailable for quite some time. However, I was able to use my connection card to get a "barely alive" data connection. Even other Verizon users could not make a voice call (not enough signal/bandwidth), yet I was able to text chat in iChat perfectly well with my wife. Because of the Verizon card, I was the only person on the tour that could maintain communication wit the outside world. No voice, and certainly no video (BTW, video conferencing in iChat while on a moving bus is just TOO cool!!!), but communication nonetheless.
So, I would say that Verizon's coverage is pretty good; about the best available. I live in Florida, though. I travel a great deal in Florida, and Sprint has most excellent coverage in all of my travel "corridors." I have tested my connection using my phone, and I can maintain a high-speed connection all the way from point A to point B, almost all of the time. The same wouldn't happen with Verizon. Verizon provides coverage over a wider area, but not necessarily high-speed. Are you following me?
So, it's really going to come down to how you travel, and where. If you are going to be mainly in heavily populated areas where you know Sprint has good PCS coverage, you might be better off with Sprint. Also, a need for higher bandwidth service might give the plus to Sprint. If you are going to be in outlying areas, or traveling through them with a need for connection, Verizon might be the way to go. Note that these areas might not provide the higher speeds, and the best you might get is slooow browsing, and email (downloads of any significance would be out).
Have you used cellular connection devices before? Do you know what to expect (and what not to expect) from them?

  • Keyboard Cover for the MBP

Does anybody have a Keyboard cover for the MBP?
i'm looking to invest in one, just need suggestion on which and where to get one!
    kevin
    btw: its a 15" mbp

Whether you're talking about the old MacBook Pro (with "PowerBook" style keyboard) or the new unibody Late 2008 MacBook Pro (with chiclet, MacBook Air style keyboard), the BEST one I think, because I searched far and wide and tried them "all" out, is from iSkin.
It's not sticky (like ZCover's) and it's not el cheapo like some other ones I've seen that advertise as not being sticky (it literally, the silicone cover, sticks to your fingers while typing), but look like crud.
I am typing with one right now. It is fantastic. I bought the "painted on" ones. It was the Arctic Pro Touch FX model.
    Here it is:
(If you have the older MacBook Pro, just go to the right section on their website. You can also choose which ever color you like, of course. I just liked how the keyboard cover I got looks like there is NO keyboard cover at all!).
P.S. KBCovers also sells a similar cover and they are not sticky either. I just didn't find out about them until after I bought my iSkin one. (Was at Macworld last week, why I was able to "test drive" all the models before settling on one). Also, PowerSupport is coming out with one--according to the dealers there--but it's not out yet. Their demo is also not the sticky kind. (Too much info?).

  • This is a workaround for the MBP wireless issue

There have been many topics on the MBP wireless issues already, but I thought some people might find this workaround helpful.
Firstly, my system is a 2.2Ghz MBP, running 10.4.10, and also airport extreme update 2007-04. I am using an airport express base station. My previous Powerbook never had any wireless problems, so I really couldn't blame the basestation for the MBPs poor wireless.
Warning - The workaround requires a little bit of work in the terminal. A little bit of understanding of how networks work is assumed here as well. So it is probably not for everyone ...
What I have observed - whenever the MBP loses connection, the airport basestation IP and MAC addresses are missing from the ARP table.
    - To view the ARP table, type (in a terminal window) arp -a.
So, when the MBP wireless hangs, open up the terminal and type that in.
Do a Cntrl-C if the arp command is hanging and not returning anything.
In normal situations, a list of IP addresses and MAC addresses will show up.
As others have already noted, clicking on the airport icon in the menubar, will magically bring the wireless back to life. When this happens, the ARP table also gets magically populated correctly. Coincidence? I think not!
So, the workaround is to store a PERMANENT entry in the ARP table for the airport basestation IP and MAC address. In my case, I can use the Airport Utility software to confirm what the basestation IP and MAC addresses are (note MAC address = Airport ID in Airport Utility). I found the basestation IP=10.0.1.1 and the MAC=0:11:24:07:d7:f
To create a permanent ARP table entry for my airport basestation, I opened up a terminal window, and did the following -
    1) login to my administrator account
    2) type in the following command sudo arp -s 10.0.1.1 0:11:24:7:d7:f
    3) type in my administrator password to authorise the change
    4) type in (to confirm the changes have been made) arp -a
    5) logout of my administrator account (from the terminal)
Ever since I did this, my MBP wireless performance has been flawless.
Note, if you shutdown or restart your computer, the arp entry disappears. This is ok for me as I hardly ever power down my MBP. As insurance I have added an account startup item to remind me to do the arp table entry.
This workaround is great for me because I don't have a need to use multiple wireless networks. It might not be practical for people who roam around onto different networks.
Give it a go and see if it works for you.

OK, after some further experimenting, I changed the multicast rate on my airport express. It was set at 6Mbps, and I changed it to 2Mbps.
I have read that the default multicast rate for previous 802.11g versions of Airport basestations is actually 2mbps. Excellent results so far !! I have set up a terminal command to continuously ping my airport router address every 15 sec, and there have been virtually no dropped packets so far over many hours.
    ping -i 15 10.0.1.1
Interestingly, in Apple's Airport Admin software in my MBP there is no option to set the rate at less than 6Mbps (!!!!), so I had to use the Windows XP version of Airport admin software to make this change using a windows machine. Using the XP software you can set the muticast rate as low as 1Mbps.
If you are using Apples airport admin software (Tiger and Leopard) and you commit any sort of change in settings, the multicast rate will be re-set at a minimum of 6Mbps. My understanding of the multicast rate is that setting it too high is similar to shrinking the coverage area of the basestation, and limiting access only to clients who can transmit at the required multicast rate.
So my new theory is that the dropouts are caused by the MBP dropping off the airport due to not being able to achieve the set multicast rate. (this could be due to factors such as low signal strength, excessive interference or noise).
If you are using Apples more recent Airport admin software, you are having a minimum 6mbps muticast rate set, and this might be too high for your particular environment.
    Just a theory.
(oh yeah, I enabled interference robustness on the MBP and the basestation just for good measure)

  • Best practice for the test environment  &  DBA plan Activities    Documents

    Dears,,
In our company, we made sizing for hardware.
    we have Three environments ( Test/Development , Training , Production ).
But, the test environment servers less than Production environment servers.
    My question is:
How to make the best practice for the test environment?
( Is there any recommendations from Oracle related to this , any PDF files help me ............ )
Also please , Can I have a detail document regarding the DBA plan activities?
I appreciate your help and advise
    Thanks

Follow your build document for the same steps you used to build production.
You should know where all your code is. You can use the deployment manager to export your configurations. Export customized files from MDS. Just follow the process again, and you will have a clean instance not containing production data.
It only takes a lot of time if your client is lacking documentation or if you re not familiar with all the parts of the environment. What's 2-3 hours compared to all the issues you will run into if you copy databases or import/export schemas?

  • IBook user - should I go for the mbp?

Ok, I have a 12inch iBook G4 800mhz, 640mb ram. Before people start badmouthing my little baby you sould all know this was my first mac and it was this that made me see the light
Ok so you know my setup. I am at college studying multimedia. For this I use apps such as photoshop, dreamweaver, illustrator and I am starting video next year and would obviosuly be using a video app such as Final Cut. I am only in my first year so its nothing too heavey, but at the same time my iBook is really starting to show its age and next year I have no doubts it will not be able to keep up.
What would you guys recommend? Taking the plunge and getting the Macbook Pro or possibly wait and see what the Macbook has to offer? Im really tempted to go for the pro as it would surely last longer with it being a pro machine. The powerbook 15inch is still an option but once again if im going to fork out £1500 on a laptop on a students budget I want it to last. Does the MBP seem the right choice, or maybe a bit over specced for what I am doing and the MB (when announced) may look a better deal.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

well thats the thing really, money. I am in the market for a new laptop and either way (MB or MBP) I will most probably have to pay through finanicing. If I am to do this over a 2-3 year period it would surely make more sense to go for the mbp right? Am I correct in thinking a pro machine should have a longer lifespan?
I could probably save up and buy a MB (supposing they keep the current ibook prices) but having just passed my driving test and paying for insurance on a car I think financing is the way to go.

  • Best Resoltion for the 7" Digital Photo Frame

    Hello,
    I have got a
    *Digital Photo Frame II, 7"W, 720 x 480, Sensor Touch, MP3 Player-Funktion PA3637K-1ETC*
The Manual doesn't tell me about the best Resolution for the Pictures to put on.
    on the Web you can Find: 800 x 480 Pixel WVGA-Screen (720 x 480 Pixel sichtbarer Bereich)
The samples are 726x 480 pixel.
    Now my Problem:
When you put Pictures on it - *It cropps a bit on the right and left side and much more on the top and bottom.*
I have tried a lot of sizes. Even on 720 x 480 it cropps.
So my question is : What is the best Resolution for the PICs ?
    Best Regards
    Markus

    Sorry,
    check your calculator: 800:533 is NOT 1.562... Mine Says : 800:533 = 1.5009380863039399624765478424015
That is less wrong than it cut's off.
Try it: take a white pic with 800x533 and draw a black frame of 10 pixels on the border. you won't see it on all sides !
That makes 20 pixels (10 on each side) of 533 cut off ... that is more than 0.0009380863039399624765478424015 error.

I am traveling to India with my new iPad...to enable me to be online 24hrs a day to access my emails...do I just need a local sim card...also can I use a normal adaptor to plug in to charge or am I best paying for the apple universal kit....

If you have the AT&T 3G iPad then you can explore the SIM card. I'm not sure if India has the SIM network or another type. REgardless you should be able to access wifi.
HOnestly, if I were traveling I'd get a plug adapter from a normal retail store. You can get a good one for $20 or less at your local retailer, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, probably KMart though I've not looked for them there. Best Buy and the office supply stores may also have them. You don't have to pay for the official one unless you want to. (I have 'over the counter' plug adapters so if I traveled I'd use what I have not buy another)

  • Best Practice for the Vendor Consignment Process

    Hiii ,,,
Can anybody have the best practices for the Vendor consignment process???
    Please Send me the document.
Please explain me the Consignment process in SAP??
    Thanx & Regards,
    Kumar Rayudu

    Hi Kumar,
In order to have Consigment in SAP u need to have master data such as material master, vendor master and purchase inforecord of consignment type. U have to enter the item category k when u enter PO. The goods receipt post in vendor consignment stock will be non valuated.
    1. The intial steps starts with raising purchase order for the consignment item
    2. The vendor recieves the purchase order.
    3. GR happens for the consignment material.
    4. Stocks are recieved and placed under consignment stock.
    5. When ever we issue to prodn or if we transfer post(using mov 411) from consignment to own stock then liability occurs.
    6. Finally comes the settlement using mrko. You settle the amount for the goods which was consumed during a specific period.
    regards

The best cover is the one that suites your needs. Try Google. There are dozens on the market.
As for the Apple Smart Cover, it does work with the new iPad. There are a few reported issues with it, but that doesn't come close to representing the totality of folks with it.

  • Best pratices for the customizing about the performance

    Hello,
I would like to know the list of the best pratices for the customizing BPC NW 7.5 about the performance.
    Best regards
    Bastien

    Hi,
There are few how to guides on SDN which will give you a basic idea on script logic. Apart from this, you can refer to the help guide on help. sap.com.
The templates might also effect the performance. The number of EVDRE functions, the number of expansion dimensions, the number of members on which expansion takes place will effect the performance. A complex formatting in the template will also effect.
    Hope this helps.

  • Capture Cards fro Premiere: What is best bang for the buck

I am looking to upgrade to the new Premiere and I am having a computer built for it. I wanted to find out what would be the best solution for capture cards. I will be wanting to capture analog (S-video cable) video in larger chunks, maybe up to 30 minutes or more. But doing this through firewire in the past, the audio would get out of sinc. What capture card has the best bang for the buck to accomplish this?

The challenge of using 3rd party tools (sw and hw) to bolster PPRO is you will be forever in the game of updating drivers here and there to make sure this or that works with that or this. Then when adobe updates their sw, the game begins anew with no guarantee of anything working together.
So; the promise of faster and better comes at a price of complexity and sometimes frailty and often a very short life. Well worth it for some; nightmare for others.
Consider a simple A/D converter for acquiring analog sd video. Or a cam with analog passthr.
