Looking for an external hard drive for my mac book pro,
Dont want to go crazy on the price, probably between $100-150.
Storing Video (From GoPro) so lots of HD video,movies, tv shows, and music from itunes.

Sounds like you'll want at least a 1TB, 7200RPM, AC-powered, Firewire 800-capable drive. What with flooding in Thailand last year having disabled most of the hard drive factories there for some time, prices are up, and there won't be much to choose from in your price range that fits this description and includes a quality enclosure and bridge chipset. Stay away from Western Digital external drives -- yes, they're inexpensive, but it's because their enclosures and the electronics in them are junk. Since you need AC power to be sure of getting enough power to a big drive, you might as well look at 3.5" desktop units instead of 2.5" portable drives, which are more expensive per GB and usually depend on bus power -- making them big battery-drainers even if they can get enough power from the computer. If you absolutely must have a portable, bus-powered drive and you plan to use it with your computer away from AC, stick to smaller sizes: 500 or at most 750GB. I'd start shopping here:

Now the bad news. No matter what you get, you'll have to get TWO: one to store your files, and another to back that one up on. Any file that exists in only one place will eventually be lost to a hard drive failure. The only question is when. So forget your $100-$150 budget: $400 is more reasonable.

The best HDD is the one that works. You will find many officialdoms of various brands and detractors of those very same brands. What I think is important for you is to get the right enclosure in which to mount the HDD. Video files are huge and to transfer the data from your internal drive to the external drive can last a long time. I speak from experience.
The enclosure I use and endorse is the OWC Mercury Elite-Al Pro mini. It can be connected by not only USB & Firewire but eSata as well. An eSata connection is the fastest available at this time, that I know of. (I'm sure thunderbolt and USB3 will coming along soon, but not available yet.) They are well constructed out of heavy aluminum extrusions and dissipate heat very well. Be warned, they are not cheap.
For what its worth, most of my HDDs are Seagate, but I have a Hitachi which came with my new MBP and Toshibas Which were inside enclosures that I purchased. All of them are still spinning.

Hi, Forestman. Epson's Perfection 3490 lists for $100 at Epson's own online store, can be had for a few dollars less from some other vendors (and, strangely, for considerably more than list from others), and has been very favorably reviewed.
Few publications or web sites do side-by-side comparison testing of really inexpensive scanners (under $100), probably because few buyers of really inexpensive scanners are critical enough to understand or care about the details. My own experience with other inexpensive Epson models has been uniformly excellent, but I haven't used a 3490 myself.
Epson's TWAIN scanning software is easy to understand and use, though of course it's less powerful than stand-alone professional-level scanning applications that I've used. I'm not familiar with the other software that comes bundled with the 3490. Epson really understands the Mac, unlike some other scanner makers (particularly HP, which is clueless) and can offer meaningful tech support.

I bought the Mophie juice pack™ powerstation from the Apple store for $80. It has more then enough power to quickly boost the charge on my iPhone4S to an acceptable level. It requires the standard 30pin/USB Apple cord to plug into it.
But unless you need to charge your phone from 5-100%, this battery is overkill. It's a real hassle having the Apple cord connected to your phone whilst there's a battery in your pocket and you end up looking quite strange with your "corded" smartphone.
I might recommend a battery case (Mophie has these), but they don't offer the protection that I need (I use a LifeProof case). Instead I would buy a smaller Mophie juice pack™ reserve (keychain, direct plug) to get out of a bind and then charge up your iPhone in the car, wall, airplane, etc.
My only concern with the above (direct plug batteries) is that the slightest bump and the battery becomes a lever that could break the 30 pin plug on your phone, just like that warily flimsy feeling when you put an iPhone in a dock.

I can't see an option to give those permission back.

Unless what you have to transfer is enormous, skip the external HD altogether and use a USB flash drive; you can get them with capacities to 128GB. Format the flash drive as FAT32 or ExFAT as LowLuster suggests so it can be read and written to on both PC's and your Mac.

Display for web design, photography or gaming - they are all going to be different due to different parameters taking the priority.

Best? or affordable?, not really the same thing.
I have not seen any monitors using the Thunderbolt connection (other than Apple), so if you are looking to take advantage of that you'll either wait, or ante up $1000. Beyond that any DVI or DisplayPort monitor will work, you'll need to decide what you want (how big, hdmi input? green or not etc etc).

There is no such thing as "best" and "inexpensive", you either want one or the other but you cannot get both. IMHO I'd recommend OWC's Mercury Elite Pro (www.macsales.com) however because you are on the other side of the pond you may want to consider a Lacie product. High quality, not cheap but good stuff for the most part.

As for camcorders - I don't really think that there is any limitation caused by your Macbook. Perhaps every single model by all the wide-known manufacturers as Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. has a USB port, so you don't have to worry about firewire.
As for external hard drives - You can find a huge number of external hard drives that are 100% compatible with all Macs for sure, on the Apple Online Store.

I want to make a copy of my HD, I have a 120GB HD in my macbook pro 2.2GHz. Can anyone recommend a good, reliable external HD for me to use? Also, what size external. Thanks

HDD prices have dropped dramatically and you can find a wide variety of externals. The larger the drive, the lower the cost per MB, so the right size would be the biggest your wallet can take. Macs are very flexible in terms of usage, so you can buy up to the huge 1TB monsters and split it up into as many partitions you like, cloning the internal drive and even booting from any of the clones as desired. The only important recommendation is choosing a reputable brand that offers a decent warranty and making sure that the drive has a Firewire interface as that is indispensable for booting reliably.
For example, in my town Costco and Sam's Club are offering external drives by Maxtor, Seagate and Western Digital ranging in size from 200, 320, 500 and 1000GB. The smallest goes for around $150, and the monster goes for $260. The little ones have the advantage of being bus-powered, meaning they pull the juice off the FW or USB interface and you don't have to lug another power brick around, while the large ones are a speedy 7200 RPM.
As for copying, what you want to do is create a bootable clone. You can use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner for that, or even Disk Utility, but with less ease of use.

I recently lost my entire 140 GB iTunes library (along with hours of raw and edited video and audio recordings) when my cheap Iomega 500GB decided to start making a ticking noise and crap out on me. I had my library backed up through iTunes on 9 DVDs a year ago, but i still lost everything I had accumulated over the past year and a half.
I am looking for the best external HD with the fastest transfer rate (USB/Firewire 400). My top priority is reliability and I need my data to be secure and safe, not necessarily disaster proof like ioSafe drives, although I would like it to be able to take a simple fall in case something were to happen while moving it. I just don't want to have to go through this again.
I have also heard about making my own external HD but am clueless about the process. Might this be a better option?
I am also entertaining the thought of buying an Acer One 160GB to use strictly for my iTunes Music (no video) since I would like to make my library more portable. I read an article about moding one to run Leopard, but the directions were a bit over my head. I guess I could put up with Windows (EEEK!) just for iTUnes Music purposes. Help!!!

i know this isn't exactly what you are looking for but it REALLY works for me & covers a few ( if not all..) of your requisites.
i have 2 WD 2Tb My Book external drives for my iTunes library : one is the library , the other is the back up & is usually disconnected just in case....
then i have the very same set-up for video/movies. the whole shebang connected through Logitech USB powered hubs & i NEVER have any hiccups during music/video playback. then my iMac is connected via an external USB sound card - M-Audio.. - to my stereo & via mini-DVI to HDMI to my plasma display. how well does it work ? bloody amazing, i'm done with DVD players & CD players.
although it has faster data transfer rates, i think you don't REALLY need to go FW- a lot more expensive drives... - & if 2Tb drives are a little too much , check out WD range, they do have smaller drives although i have found that the 1Tb drives have the best capacity/price/performance ratio, at least here in Portugal
maybe you could set up something static at home with a beefier ( capacity wise..) drive & then have a smaller , both capacity & size wise to go on the move ?

Best External Monitor for the DV SE 500 and what connections are needed?

What do people think is a good LCD monitor for the slot loader iMac? (I'm here in UK with access to PC world and Currys, etc,)
I've never looked but I'm sure from other posts that I will have a connector under a panel round the back somewhere.
I've seen monitors for sale at various prices ranging from £120 to £250. I've also noticed that some come with a HDMI (?) cable that seems to big for the connection port on my Powerbook so I'm wondering if the iMac's port will also need some sort of adapter. Are there such things as mini HDMI's and normal HDMI's and can a cable/adapter be bought to solve the problem?
I really wanted a Mac display but from posts elsewhere I find that these need digital connections and neither my iMac nor my 550 Powerbook has digital out.
So - I'm assuming I need a monitor with an analogue connection - possibly together with an adapter cable.
I'm thinking no bigger than 19".
I'm also wondering if I should try to find one with a resolution that matches both my Macs - is this possible? I know the Powerbook will run displays of several resolutions (millions of colours) in display closed mode but I'm not sure what the iMac will support.
I've seen monitors quoting 1280x1024 as something called a native resolution. Is this important?
What do people think/advise? Many of you will have hooked up an external LCD monitor to your iMacs and will have cracked all these issues.
Can you help with some info please?

1. The iMac G3 (>=400MHz) has a standard VGA port (15pin D-Sub) which is standard for analogue PC monitors.
2. New LCD panels will either have a newer digital DVI connection (which current Apple Displays use) and/or use the older analogue VGA connection for wider compatibility.
3. LCDs look sharpest in their native resolution. You can see this effect by changing the resolution down from the maximum on your TiBook. The display is still visible but less defined.
4. As the iMac G3 can only "mirror" the internal display on to the external you may wish to look for an XGA (1024x768) panel. However, the Powerbook Ti can display a wide range of resolutions (see the full list in this link) in either "mirror" or "dual-display" mode.
The issue here is that a display that makes full advanatge of your Powerbook's capabilties is overkill for an iMac G3's limited capabilites.
5. FYI, HDMI is a digital connection for Digital TVs. It is similar to DVI technology but carries sound data too.

Just get get some advice from the geeks at your local electronics store, tell them it is for a MAC. You can get either USB or Firewire. With Firewire you can make it "Bootable" so that you could boot from it if something nasty were to happen to your internal HD.
For RAM go to a site like crucial.com and you can enter your Mac model and it will tell you what RAM should be used. And if you click on the Blue Apple in the top left corner of your screen and click "About this Mac" => More Info and let us know the Machine Model someone can tell you how much RAM your Mac will handle and also use this info when selecting RAM (eg. Crucial.com)
