Best FCE Learning Resource?
Hello FCE users,
How did you learn to use FCE? I recently upgraded from iMovie 09 to FCE but am still scratching my head at its advanced interface and capabilities that I am not yet able to use. How did you learn to get to your current level of proficiency? Thanks a lot for your info!

Need Report Builder Learning Resource -- Books, CDROM, etc.
I'm a seasoned SW architect and I'm pretty good at learning stuff on my own. I need a resources for learning Oracle Report Builder. I did a few of the tutorials on the web but they do little more than take you thru the wizzards. They don't cover more advanced topics like reports with several linked queries.
The only book I found dates from about 1999-2000 and covers Forms and Reports. Only about 20% of the book is Reports.

Anyone know how much the product has changed in six years? Would that be too out of date?
There is an CD-ROM course from Oracle for $500. Anyone use that who can give a review?
I know there's also a one week course from Oracle for $3K. I'm not that into sitting in class for a whole week if I don't have to.

Can anyone recommend a good learning resource for photshop scripting? Something other than the Adobe scripting JS reference guides or Java Script manuals. Ideally, a course focused on Photoshop Scripting.

Which book is best for learning Lightroom 5 for a complete beginner?
I'm an Aperture user and as everyone has heard the news, a lot of us are considering switching over. I went through the Apple pro-training aperture, logic, and FCP books and loved the format of those. I've been reviewing my options for LR5 books on Amazon and I see a couple, Kelby, Evening, and The Adobe Classroom in a book. I kind of like the classroom in a book format as it resembles the Apple book's format. Which book is best for learning LR5, from a complete beginner's perspective?
I would avoid Kelby like the plague. I didn't like his book, I felt his chapters on the Library module were effectively useless and off the mark.

Best FCE video tutorial course?
I am looking for the best option here. I've already purchased IzzyVideo's FCE chapters and found it a little quick for me....I'm looking for something more comprehensive.
Apple has several recommendations on their FC "Resources" page, including:

Message was edited by: rellufsAll the basic editing features are the same. The DVD & book are useful regardless of the version of FCE that you have.
The one thing that won't be in the book & DVD is doing Log & Transfer from AVCHD camcorders. That's an FCE feature that came out after the DVD and book were published. But Log & Transfer is also pretty straightforward.
If there is something specific that you are looking for, let us know what it is and one of us can probably tell you if it's covered in Tom's book or DVD.
One more thing, the Weynand book is the text for the Apple FCE training course, and a fine companion when you are in class with a live teacher. I would not suggest it for someone getting started on their own. I once called it the "Bataan Death March of feature descriptions." -

Tom's book is a big tutorial book with lessons. It's a very good start to learn using FCE by practice.
Lisa Brenneis's "Quickstart guide FCE for Mac OS X" is a kind of dictionnary presenting all application menus. It's less based on a day to day work.
Both volumes will teach you a lot of FCE.

Best FCE Project Settings to make widescreen DVD with iDVD?
I need to make DVDs with lots of short clips stitched together into a longish movie. I've been using iDVD to burn the DVDs (because it's free and I know how to use it). (NTSC TV, not PAL)
The clips are mostly still pictures animated with either FCE (using the ImageFlow plugins) or PulpMotion Advanced. Sometimes they contain movie clips shot with whatever camera one of my colleagues has with them.
I'm wondering what are the best project settings to use with FCE to generate a video file that I can drag into iDVD and have rendered as a widescreen video? As a Bear of Very Little Brain I'm confused by all the options (dimensions, frame rate, codec, etc).
I tried this weekend using H.264 codec, 1280 x 720 29.97 frame rate, 24 key frames, and the video took 20 hours to output from FCE, then another 3 hours for iDVD to encode for the DVD. (2.66 GHz Quad-Core MacPro with 10 GB RAM and 200+ GB free on HD, if it makes a difference.) Clearly there must be settings that are more efficient!Mostly my input files are still pictures, usually JPEGs. I bought the ImageFlow plugins which will animate them in different ways. For example, I took the pictures of everyone at my school and animated them into a 30 minute sequence of swooshing images with a video matte over a green caustic video generator.
Sometimes I use a program called PulpMotion to make a different animation, but I have a lot of choices for exporting a QuickTime file from that program, so I could set that to match whatever's best for FCE.
Sometimes I'll use iMovie 09 to make a clip from still images (for the automatic animations), but again I have a lot of choices for exporting that clip and bringing it into FCE. -
I often scan the discussion group articles because I always learn a lot from them.
There are many constructs used in various SQL examples in this group that are totally foreign to me (because I am a novice).
Can anyone recommend a book or location where I might become familiar with these advanced SQL concepts and how they are used.
I am thinking of something with good examples so Oracle reference may not be satisfactory
