Best file manager with SMB and streaming support? Time Capsule access?

Constantly having to jump through hoops it seems, because of no file manager in iOS. Another simple scenario: have 2 disks connected to my Apple Time Capsule. Can accesss them with Android phones, always in trouble finding a good app on iPhone. Any tips? Wish I could also stream my home videos, etc from these disks. Documents 5 (Readdle) can access them via SMB, but not stream, which is nasty for large videos.
Thank you,
Roman

I was experiencing the same problem when I upgraded to a Time Capsule. To fix the problem remove all personal file sharing port mapping settings. Then make sure that the enable  file share, and enable over WAN is on and checked for the TC, then update the TC. While that's updating go into the server app and remove any old file sharing protocols from the TC on the server app. Next add a new custom protocol by hitting the + name it file share and set the port to 140. hit the update button and wait for it to finish. Once that's finish go back to the airport utility and find the newly made file share protocol by selecting it under port mapping for the TC. If you don't have the newly made one in there make a new one your self. Name it the same as you did in the server app and set the public TCP ports to 140 and the private TCP ports to 548, make sure the private IP address is set to the same as your server in the reserve. Update the time capsule and you should be able to access both by putting in the appropriate afp://www.yourserver.com:140 for the server and afp://www.yourserver.com:548  for the TC. Have fun, lion server can be a little fussy!

  • Is an Air 13,3 (1.8 Core i7) in combination with an apple tv 2 (with xbmc) and a new time capsule a good combo to have a flawless mediacentre / network?

    Hi there,
I ordered a mac Air and now looking into the possibilities to have a nice mediacenter / network setup.
Already searched the net but mostly finding posts about older airs, apple tv and tc's. Some of them not very positive as in the tc in combination with the air being slow etc.
What advise can you people give me in this?
    Any input is highly appreciated!

  • File Manager with tree view

I've been using Cinnamon with the Nemo file manager for a while now but I'm wanting to remove Cinnamon and have only Openbox and Awesome installed. The only thing that's stopping me now is I'm unsure of what to use for a file manager. The feature of Nemo that I really like is the ability to show folders in tree view in the main pane when in detailed list view. I know that most of them probably have the tree feature in a side pane but I want it in the main pane.
I'd like something with as few dependencies as possible since I'm wanting a more minimal approach to my system. Nemo requires Cinnamon, I'm guessing that Nautilus has the feature that I'm looking for as well but that requires Gnome.
Can anyone recommend another file manager with this feature? Or is there any way to install Nemo/Nautilus without their desktop dependencies?

drcouzelis wrote:It doesn't look like Nemo requires Cinnamon. What do you mean?
claire ~ % pacman -Qi nemo
    Name : nemo
    [snip]
Depends On : libexif gvfs dconf desktop-file-utils exempi python2
    cinnamon-desktop gnome-icon-theme libnotify libxml2
    cinnamon-translations
I think this is what is meant.

Not really, since those libraries are required to run the respective file manager.

  • Looking for a file manager with copy queue

    Hey,
I'm looking for a file manager with a file-copy-queue feature.
It is useful when browsing mounted samba shares, and you find something you want to copy.
You'll then start copying the files, and then spot another useful folder. You start copying that as well
and suddenly you got 5 different file copies processing at the same time, which decreases the copy speed.
I also miss the feature when transfering files from my external harddrives.
If there is a lot of FM's with this feature, I prefer one without kde-dependencies, as I am using xfce.

Ranguvar wrote:If MC really does have that as a feature, it's once again proved itself _the_ graphical (sorta) file manager.
    sorry for misinformed.
mc has a background job option while copying, it is not exactly a queue like functionality, but simulating to be a queue, and you can stop/resume a background job.

  • File manager with tree view in main pane?

I'm looking for a file manager with something similar to Nautilus' list view, with a list and tree structure as a main view.
The nautilus one is awesome, but nautilus has qwerks if you don't use gnome (wants to control desktop, panels are very restricted, etc.)
Does anyone know of a file manager with a view similar to this that I can try out?

I've seen a few things on spacefm, and played with it a bit. Took me 3 minutes and 2 segmentation faults to find the setting to change views, and it still doesn't have the ability I want, so still a bit too buggy for me.
Pcmanfm is a good all around filemanager, but doesn't have that feature either.
I played with a slew of file managers one day looking for similar things, maybe I should try that again and branch out further than what's in the repos.
    More suggestions?

  • Best File Manager For Really Large Folders

I have a folder with 397GB of music. None of the music players like it much. Rhythmbox and Banshee either wont run or are so slow they're not useable.
I have been using Xmms to play, which is great. Nautilus is way to slow and MC doesn't quite have the features I want.
What file manager would you recommend for really big folders?

I've used about everything there is. Amarok was nice for a while, but there were a ton of little annoyances that added up and eventually I was too frustrated to keep using it. I have settled on XMMS2 + gxmms2 + xmms2-scrobbler. It's been good to me.
Ideally, foobar2000 would be ported to Linux. There is nothing like it.
I also prefer PCManFM as a file manager. Dolphin and Thunar are OK. but PCManFM is very fast...it's good at dealing with my giant directories with thousands of files in it.
Also, for all that music, what file system do you have it on? I used to keep all my music on an NTFS drive for compatibility but it kept screwing itself up and it was slow, but recently I switched to ReiserFS and I've seen amazing improvements.

  • Best File Manager / File Browser / Finder / Explorer ?

What is the absolute best file manager / file browser / finder / explorer ?

There won't be one for the iphone system, or I guess other apps files.
But there are a few that can open photos, documents, videos from the album and email.
iOS is quite closed as far as searching around inside the file system.
This I believe is to protect the system and make it more "fool proof" (and reading many posts on this forum you get an idea why it is good to be this way).
There are iphone browsers for on computers that browse the iphone when connected.
But you would have to jail break your iphone to really open it up to looking in the system; and should not be attempted unless you really know what you are doing.
Or are you looking for an app to browser a computer over wifi?

you should never (ab)use a designated backup-setup for 'ordinairy' storage tasks.
plus, the wireless connection to TC is too slow for iMovie.
    purchase any ext. usb-harddrive, 500Gigs starting at 50$ ...
you HAVE to follow advice given here:

  • Can I copy my iTunes files and folders to Time Capsule wirelessly from my PC?

Can I copy my iTunes files and folders to Time Capsule wirelessly from my PC? I was wondering since my iTunes files and folders are connected to iTunes.

You can but the TC is the worst possible location. The design is slow to start and quick to stop data connections.. that will cause trouble.
    Moving folders has specific instructions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364
Move it to an external hard disk fine.. but be very sure you will not be happy with the TC as a location.

    It's good for that . . .
But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.
Via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
You might also want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse the rest of the FAQ.

  • There are ! on music files  I have purchased and I do not have access

there are ! on music files  I have purchased and I do not have access. I am using my husbands computer. Could that be a problem.
    I

Well, welcome to the world of "hacked" phones. If your purchase was from the US, you obviously purchased an iPhone that is locked to a US carrier. The iPhone must have been jailbroken and unlocked via software to accommodate your foreign SIM card. Now that you have updated the phone, it is locked back to the US carrier. Only the carrier can authorize Apple to unlock the iPhone and none of the US carriers will unlock the iPhones. Best suggestion is to sell the phone and obtain a factory unlocked version directly from the Apple store.
To answer your other question, there is not a supported method to downgrade iOS.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.

Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

    Visit
The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on the hard drive. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
