Best file types to use

I am currently building a presentation file for a company.
They have a wide range of spec PCs that they would view the
presentation on and I want to ensure that they can view it smoothly
even if they are viewing it on a PC that is years and years old
with very little RAM and graphics power.
So, there must be a prefered file type that people tend to
save in whether it be .JPG , .BMP etc for images or .AVI , .MPEG
etc for video. Is there a better file type to be using to ensure
the presentation works well on every (well almost) computer?
Also are there any image properties that I should avoid, such
as alpha masking?
Finally Flash. What is the best way to save and create a
Flash file that can be viewed best on any PC?
Publishing. I have had problems with this before. Should
files be imported into the presentation or left external? Any tips
as for this?
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Are you asking only about Flash or about Authorware too?
I've been building Authorware courses for almost 10 years. In
all that time,
jpg and bmp have been fine, and that's going back to 133MHz
Win 95 laptops
with 16 Mb RAM and 1 Mb graphic cards. If you think you are
delivering to
such ancient, steam-driven machines then avoid png and avoid
alpha
transparency, avoid Flash in Authorware.
Otherwise, if your oldest machine is, say. Pentium 600 MHz,
64 Mb RAM, 8Mb
graphics running Win 98, you should be fine with png graphics
and simple
Flash animations, but probably best to avoid both on screen
at the same
time.
Otherwise, give us a better idea of what you think your
oldest, worst
machines will be.
Oh - note that Authorware 7 content isn't even recommended
for Win 95 -

  • Best file type; JPEG, TIFF, PNG etc

I'm using Iphoto 5 (can't decide to buy 06 or buy new Imac - still thinking on that ...) and wonder what is the best file type to use. When importing pictures from my camera they are jpeg's (haven't tried raw setting yet)- from my scanner I use TIFF. It appears the TIFF files are a lot larger - 20 to 50mb compared to the jpegs 1 to 5mb. I've opened the TIFF files in preview and save as JPEG to reduce the size and also scanned using JPEG format - I don't see any advanatge to the larger tiff files and the smaller jpegs are easier manipulated - am I'm missing something?

    Hi Arlington,
There is an important difference between JPG and TIFF:
    JPG uses a lossy compression!!!
Just try to open a JPG and save it under a new name as JPG. Repeat this ten times and then compare the last picture (..the one that got saved and re-saved ten times as a JPG) with the original one you should see a difference, the quality of the last image should be a lot less than the original.
That's the difference - if you want to edit your pictures (e.g. in Photoshop) and quality is your first priority then go with TIFF. If you just download the pictures from your digital camera and store them then JPEG is your best choice.

  • A "file type" question: using Terminal?

Hi all, how do I change the file type of files (as seen in the Get Info box?) Here's an odd thing. Apple's Logic Pro's been stable for a while now for me. Then I install Final Cut Studio as an upgrade from my Soundtrack Pro. Seems to crash a bit now....my Sampletank 2.1 plug-in (audio unit/component) which has been super fine seems to appear in Crashed thread zero, but I must add, I also installed the recent Pro Applications Update (and 10.4.7) too...
Oddest thing is that since installing Final Cut Studio, most of my Audio Unit plug-ins have had their "file type" which USED to be "Audio Unit/Component" changed to "iDVD2 file" AND, whereas before they'd all say "open with <none>", as they should do, those affected say now "open with DVD Studio Pro 2". Anyone know how to change them back to <none> (guess it involves using the Terminal...) or whether I need to????????? Nobody in the Logic thread as responded....

    Hi, Chris.
That the specific file types are not being recognized correctly may indicate that the Launch Services database is corrupted.

  • What is the best audio file type to use when ripping CD's?

Very new to this. When I rip my CD's to my computer, what file type should I use? Pros and Cons of each if you could too please? Thanks!

The best bitrate and encoder is the one that suits you best.

Apple Lossless will give excellent sound quality, but at a file size that is much larger than mp3 or aac, so the trade off here is not as many songs will fit on your iPod.

You should probably start by encoding a piece of music you are familiar with, in either mp3 or aac at something like 192kbps, listen to it, then try again at different bit rates, both lower and higher, to see if you can hear a difference in sound quality.

If you can’t hear the difference in sound quality between various bitrates, then the lower one will suffice, and you can store more songs on your iPod. Try this in both encoding formats. You could encode the same song several times in iTunes under a slightly different name (just edit the song in iTunes and add the bitrate after the song title), transfer these songs to your iPod and do some comparative listening. Then you can make an informed decision about which format/bitrate is best for you.

Yes it’s time consuming, but much better to rip your cds at decent sound quality now, rather than decide much later that you are not satisfied, and have to rip them again.

And incidentally, a song of the same length, encoded at the same bitrate, gives an almost identical file size whether it be encoded in aac or mp3.

Where the space saving issue comes in is because many people say that if you encode a song at 128kbps in aac format, then the sound quality is as good as the same song encoded at 160 or 192kbps in mp3 format, therefor using the aac version gives a smaller file size and allows you to store more songs on your iPod.

It's very subjective and you shouldn't let anyone tell you what to use.

Let your ears be your guide.

  • Which file type to use for editing

I recently filmed a school talent show to create DVDs for the parents. I'll be using PrE 9 to edit. I understand the output for the movie will need to be MPEG2 for the DVD. We used three different cameras (I know this is a bad thing to do with PrE), but we used what we have available. Though, we did use a GoPro Hero2 mounted on the piano to give a unique perspective. Consequently I need to convert the video files into a common format for editing. Is there a "best" file format to edit in or is there a file format that is easiest to work with in Premiere Elements while maintaining the best quality for the DVD output?
    Here is what we used:
Camera 1 (with the audio track from the sound board) was a Canon Vixia HF300. It exported in the dreaded .mts format (half the show at 24mbps and half at 17mbps)
Camera 2 was a Nikon 5100 as .mov files, 1920x1080, H.264, Linear PCM, Total bit rate 19k
    Camera 3 was a GoPro Hero 2 recorded .mp4 1280x780 H.264 Total bit Rate 15k
Since the aspect ratios are not equivalent, I plan on using black bars as opposed to cropping.
I'm editting on an Apple MacBookPro 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8gb RAM running OSX 10.7
Also, should I use Quicktime to convert these files into the common format I choose? Ironically, all this footage is editable in iMovie, but iMovie is horrible for multi-camera.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Over on the Windows side of the aisle where I am, I would say convert all to DV AVI since the end will be a DVD, not a BluRay

  • Most compatable file type to use when copying and pasting specially formatted text into html pages?

    Hello,
I have a simple web site at http://www.psychicmeatloaf.com which is an online poetry journal site. I use files people send me (mostly .doc or .docx) and cut and paste the text from those files into html pages in an older version of Dreamweaver and some of the text has special formatting (like this page: http://www.psychicmeatloaf.com/Chang-poetry.htm ). The best way I have found to maintain the special text formatting is to open the .docx files and "save as a web page" in Word and then open the web page from Dreamweaver and then "Preview the page" in Explorer and copy and paste from the preview into an html page in Dreamveaver. Even using this method, some text will not maintain it's special formatting and for those I just save the page as a .jpg file and use that, because I have no other choice.
My question is, is there a better way and is there a better file type to work from other than .docx?
    Thanks a milliom,
    George

That's a lot of steps to get to a single end that could be done with a simple copy & paste of the text into code. Like Photoshop and Fireworks, Word writes some very bulky and dirty code. I wouldn't recommend it for direct copy by the method described above.
I personally copy the text and paste it into code view. It takes a little more work, but I don't get dozens of lines of inline styles added with it and using a preformatted post div (saved and hidden in the code (<!--post block code goes inside-->), I can quickly put title, date, byline and links up with a cut & paste.
    That's just my $0.02 worth
Also, since nearly EVERYONE will use a different formatting in a Word doc, putting a bunch of differently formatted posts into a page will make it look like one of those ransom notes made of cut out text from different newspapers and magazines.  Better to keep everything in a single format (your format) so it doesn't become an eyesore.

  • Best File Format to use for iTunes and MAC

I have always used the AAC Encoder set to 256 kbps to import my CDs to iTunes. In preparation for moving to a music server system in the future I want to re-import my CDs at the highest quality (uncompressed) format that I can.
Is my understanding correct that AIFF was developed for use with MAC and basically WAV for Windows? Would it be best for me to use AIFF? Should the settings be left at automatic or set to 16 bit, 44 khz and stereo?
I understand there is a way to take these uncompressed files and compress them later for transfer to my iPod. How is that done? If there are tutorials or other directions on this site or others please feel free to direct me to those. At this point I have not been able to find an answer to my specific questions.
Any other recommendations or suggestions is appreciated.
    Thank You
    Mike

Macs and iTunes will recognize and play both AIFF and WAV formats. If you want to play the files on Windows machines as well, I'd say use WAV encoding. In order to ensure the quality you want, change the setting from 'Automatic' to 16 Bit, 44.1khz stereo (this is industry standard).
When you want to compress the high quality WAVs, change the import settings to the desired format (mp3/aac etc). Then select the tracks you wish to compress and in the 'Advanced' menu, chose 'Convert selection to mp3/aac'. iTunes will then create duplicate tracks encoded to the desired format.
    Hope this answers your question.

I am relatively new to Mac and got it for music production, but more recently I have been messing around with video and a I have difficulty dealing with Mpeg and some other file types with imovie. My question is this, what file format will automatically import into imovie the way that iphoto imports from my camera? and if they aren’t recognised, what is the best file converter??

'best' is, what iMovie is intended for - straight from tape-based or AVCHD camcorder.
'best' in terms of most versatile and offering the 'best' format (=iM's own AppleIntermediateCodec) is free Mpeg Streamclip
only for convertiing mp2, such as non-copyprotected videoDVDs, you need the 20$ mp2-playback-component ......

  • Best File Type for Printing Ai Artwork

    Hi all,
I have been designing in illustrator for a while, but am fairly new to designing media for print.  I am uploading a poster-size graphic to a web site that only accepts .jpeg and .png.  The graphic will be used on the web and will also be printed.  I know .png is preferable as it is not a lossy format and works better with vector art, but .png does not support CMYK color space for printing.  In a situation where I can only choose betweent the two, should I choose .jpeg over .png for better printing, despite the lossy format?
    Thanks for your help!

I have to disagree. Only some digital printers prefer RGB files. Most want to get CMYK files. If you have text in clean black dreated a workflow with RGB involved will transform any clean black in clored 4c-black which has to be avoided.
That's said it will exclude also PNG files. PNG  does not support CMYK and neither color management. So the printed outcome will not predictable.
And if you send an Illustrator file for print use only PDF.
AI would be fine, if the printer in not openen the file in Illustrator but only in Acrobat. If you have used fonts which are not available on the printers side or if you have linked files included into you AI file, opening an AI file will destroy that file. But if someone is using only a PDF or the PDF part of the AI file it is ok.
EPS does not support transparency nor does it support color management. So it is to avoid also.
JPG, PNG, TIFF and others are rasterizing the artwork and text by the image's resolution contrary to vector artwoork which will be rasterized on the devizes' resolution. This ends in a raggy edge of the vectors you really won't want.

  • Best file format to use when moving....

Hi all. What would be the best file format for moving a track from *Adobe Soundbooth CS5* to *Apple Soundtrack*, for editing? I've currently got it in Soundbooth native format (.asnd), and can take it out as almost anything.
The audio will eventually be laid into a DVD project, currently in the works. Your thoughts are appreciated.
