Best filter advice for minimizing clothing rustle in an interview situation

I had a fidgety interview subject who was wearing a pacemaker that interfered with the lav mike that we had attached to him. We had to resort to a shotgun mike which provided more shielding. He was sitting in a velour chair and had a tendency to move around quite a bit...with that kind of rustling sound from clothing. Unfortunately we could not switch out his chair.
Any advice on which audio filters in Soundtrack Pro may be the most useful? I could take a look at the frequency spectrum analyser, but I think that is probably only good for removing loud flashes of sound like something hitting the mike boom.
I'm sure others have tried to filter out similar sounds in an interview situation and I thought of asking first before I try my experimentation. Of all the filters one can use, which should I give priority to first?
Many thanks,
John

If the rustling noises are a LOT softer than the voice, try the FCP or Apple "expander" used as a noise gate. The FCP documentation discusses it. Basically, you pick a threshhold below which you kill the sound. You'll have to experiment a bit to make sure that you subject speaks or you have other wanted audio that it is not cut off. You also need to be careful that the spots between the subject talking are not unnaturally quiet. I've added an "ambient noise" track to some stuff I've done, or even soft white noise so that it doesn't go dead silent between speeches.

  • Best Practice Advice for Xcelsius Beginner

    Hello, all -
This is my first post to the community. Please forgive my naivety. : )
I've read about half of the 400 page Xcelsius manual, and am still confused about using individual cells to comprise a series. My client has a ready-made Excel spreadsheet generated from Crystal Reports that I am using within Xcelsius Engage.
Specifically, I am trying to build an easily reusable Xcelsius document that does not require the spreadsheet to be changed (additional functions/formulas). I would like my client's admin to be able to just copy and paste the data into Xcelsius and publish.
But when I try to use 3 separate calls to comprise the values of a series (to calculate total revenue), the text box in my line chart properties doesn't display my selection. My question boils down to this: Is it best to custom design a spreadsheet (and require my client to invest additional human resources), or is it best to strive for advanced Xcelsius programming and just use a ready-made spreadsheet?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you for the prompt response. But what I am wondering is if I should ask the client to design a new report format to easily integrate with Xcelsius, or try to work with the client's ready-made (designed for a different purpose) spreadsheet, and through advanced Xcelsius programming (multiple series, insertions, etc.), manipulate it to do what I need it to.
Specifically, what I have been given by the client is a spreadsheet broken out by month, that on each month page there are 3 cells that correspond to different sources of revenue. In a perfect world, I would change the spreadsheet design to calculate a total for each month, so I could use the monthly totals in a simple line chart. What I am wondering is am I asking for an unnecessary amount of hassle trying to do this through multiple series, insertions, etc., and should I just ask the client to create a new report format.
Additionally, can someone tell me if it is even possible to pull values (in the case described above, monthly totals) from different pages to comprise a series?
    Thanks!

  • -ilsr, best ram advice for sys build

Im building what i hope will be a worry free system for my mother, and want basically to just shove the bits in and watch it fly, trouble is, as this board is a bi(r)tch  for ram, i wanted to know what the best ram on a budget would be, ive heard crucial isnt too bad, kingston not so bad but mushkin? finding uk suppliers is tough

See my sticky post regarding Good Memory choices at the top of the forum...
I wouldn't depend on a 350W supply to run my system these days...it's too close to the line and this motherboard is power hungry...add in a middle of the road video card and you may just intermittent yourself to death and end up bald like Bas *chuckles* Intermittent meaning that the system will do random reboots, shut down, etc...
Everything else looks decent tho...memory is such a crapshoot regardless of what middle of the line brand that you buy...if you buy high end then it's not a big deal...
    Good luck to you!!

  • I'm looking for "best practices" advice for a project setup (Premiere CS5.5, Windows 7 Pro)

I have been tasked with updating an old Corporate video with new music, sounds, graphics and narration.
The ONLY video-camera material I have is from a corporate DVD (NTSC) - the original source material is simply not available. .
I can rip the DVD to MPEG 2  and  import it into Premiere without issue, but would like to be able to use higher-resolutions for the updated graphics.
I plan to export to Youtube (HD) but may well export to DVD or BluRay as well.
My question really narrows down to how to manage Sequences.   I figure that my Sequence settings should be the highest resolution I expect to work with (Youtube HD or Bluray) allowing me to easily export to lower quality, but I don't really know if it's as  simple as that.  Is there an industry standard methodology?  Am I close?

Premiere can actually use .vob files from DVDs, just copy them from DVD to hard drive, then Import into Premiere.
Is the existing DVD video in a 4:3 or 16:9 format? If 4:3, consider how you will work that into a 16:9 program. Rather than having black pillar bars at the sides, many editors will put in some sort of background to fill that space. A popular solution is to duplicate the 4:3 video on a lower track, stretch to fill the screen and add Gaussian Blur effect. Since the colors/content of the side bars will match the main video, it is somewhat disguises the fact that the video is 4:3.
If you put SD footage into an HD program, it is going to look "soft" compared to HD footage. As a compromise, you might consider editing the new program as 720p rather than 1080p, so that the SD resolution is not being stretched as far. All computer video/YouTube video is non-interlaced, meaning editing sequences and exports should be done as Progressive.
Potential workflow issue - if you take the existing SD footage from the DVD, and upscale it into an HD sequence, then export back to DVD (SD resolution), the video is turned to mush. It has been upscaled, then dowscaled again, really kills the quality. Might need to copy the finished HD sequence to an SD sequence, fix any size/scaling issues for graphics and titles, and export DVD from the SD sequence to avoid the upscale/downscale of SD footage. Note that DVD video is highly compressed, so you are already working with a weak source material, recompressing again is going to be a quality hit in any case, but definitely avoid upscale/downscale again.
I don't have Adobe apps in front of me at the moment, but I believe the 720p Blu-ray export options are limited, perhaps 720p at 59.94 only, not certain. That may effect your decision of 1080p versus 720p.
    Hope these tips help

There should be no issues. Its designed to work like that.  You don't change Apple IDs just because you get a new device.

Unlikely. But nothing is impossible.   Though I don;t see how that would happen. As long as both are signed into the Same Apple ID / iCloud Account they will be N'Sync. (Bad Joke)

If I get a message or buy an app or take a photo on the iPhone 5, how do I get those things onto the iPhone 6?
If you buy an App, you have 2 ways to get it to the iPhone6: If Automatic Downloads is enabled in Settings->iTunes & App Store, it will automatically download to the iPhone 6 when you buy it on the 5 and vice versa if you buy it on the 6, it will download to the 5.
Alternatively, you can simply go to the App Store App->Updates->Purchased and look for the App there and download it. Purchased Apps will not require payment again. i.e They'll be free to download to the iPhone 6 once purchased.
SMS Messages will sync over using Continuity as long as they are on the same Wifi network. Otherwise, restoring the iPhone 5 backup to the iPhone 6 will transfer all messages received up until the backup was made onto the iPhone 6.
Images, can be transferred either through Photo Stream

  • Best Practice Advice - Using ARD for Inventorying System Resources Info

    Hello All,
I hope this is the place I can post a question like this. If not please direct me if there is another location for a topic of this nature.
We are in the process of utilizing ARD reporting for all the Macs in our district (3500 +/- a few here and there). I am looking for advice and would like some best practices ideas for a project like this. ANY and ALL advice is welcome. Scheduling reports, utilizing a task server as opposed to the Admin workstation, etc. I figured I could always learn from those with experience rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. Thanks for your time.

hey, i am also intrested in any tips. we are gearing up to use ARD for all of our macs current and future.
i am having a hard time with entering the user/pass for each machine, is there and eaiser way to do so? we dont have nearly as many macs running as you do but its still a pain to do each one over and over. any hints? or am i doing it wrong?

  • What is best filter for MacBook Pro

What is best filter for my son's MacBook Pro to block adult/**** sites while allowing access to most anything else. The parental control I set up has not been the answer.  I constantly have to unlock sites for him.  I would appreciate any suggestion.

If the options on the computer itself are not sufficient, you might try other options like OpenDNS Home, but it also involves a list that might need to be customized.
In the end, the best defense is passing down a strong set of values so that when your son does visit the "wrong" site (as he inevitably will, and increasingly so into adulthood) he at least has an innate knowledge that he shouldn't be there.

  • Best Filter or Preset for Music Performance

    Hey guys,
I'm not the best (read here, nearly the worst) audio guy out there, so I was hoping someone could give me some quick advice. I have a video recording of a live band. They gave me an audio recording to match up with it (.wav), and I notice that some parts are fairly quiet, but when I raise the gain in FCP, I'm hitting the 0dB for louder beats or notes. I'm looking for a decent preset and what I should tweak on it if anything to dial in my sound. I was thinking of just a limiter, but I know a lot of you guys could have much more educated advice for me on this.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

Thanks. Should I use any of the presets for the compressor? I notice a lot of presets, and I've really just picked one for now (hard base, since some of the base notes seem to really blow up the levels).

  • Best way to clean microfiber cloth used for the display?

What is the best way to clean microfiber clothes used for the display?
    Thanks

Hand washing works well, but can be tedious.
If you decide to machine wash, make sure of a few things:
    - Use warm water
    - Do not wash with towels or undergarments. The microfiber cloth will pick up every bit of lint from them.
    - Wash it with similar color items.
    - Use regular soap, but don't use bleach or fabric softener. The bleach can damage the cloth (and the Apple cloth is black anyway, do you really want a spotted cloth?) and the fabric softener will reduce the effectiveness of the cloth.
    - Hang it up to dry or dry it on the lowest setting of your dryer. I am not certain about the Apple cleaning clothes, but other microfiber clothes have been known to actually melt in the dryer if it gets too hot.
    To hand wash:
    - Put the cloth in a bowl with a tight fitting lid, add a little soap. Either dish soap or laundry soap will work, you don't need much.
    - Close the lid tight & then shake the bowl hard for a few minutes. Find a 3 year old, they'll love to help do this.
    - Remove the cloth & rinse it well, making sure the water runs clear.
    - Air dry flat or throw it in the dryer at a low setting.

  • Multiple libraries, Pbook/Pmac, advice for management & updating please.

    Hi Everyone,
I travel frequently, and am looking for suggestions to keep all my iPhoto libraries up to date. I currently have a g5, Powerbook, and Mini.
I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 and I have several thousand photos on my Dual g5. I just came back with 1000 more from my diving trip. The problem is, they are on my Powerbook, and taking up alot of space on the relatively small hard drive. I managed to work through the rough upgrade from 5 to 6, and now I need some more help...
    1) What is your advice for managing multiple libraries of photos.
    2) What is the best way to transfer the iphoto pics (and movies) to my desktop, which of course has the larger storage capacity, after travelling...
    Thanks,

    Jason:
There are several different approaches to what you want to do. Let me just throw out a couple that I'm familiar with.
To get the new photos from your PB to your G5 and maintain any keywords, and other organization effort you put into them, you'll need the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will allow you to merge libraries or copy between libraries and maintain the metadata, etc. That's the only way currently available to move photos from one library to another and keep the roll, keywords, comments, etc. with those photos. You can connect the two Macs with one in the Target Mode, probably your PB, and then run iPLM to move the photos to the G5 library.
Now there is a way to have a library on your PB that reflects the one on your G5 but is only a fraction of the size. That's to have an alias based library on your PB that uses the Originals folder as its source of source files. (My 25,600 files, 27G, are represented by an iPhoto Library folder of only 1.75G). When the PB is not connected with the G5, say with a LAN, it will have limited capabilities which are in part: you'll only be able to view the thumbnail files, be able to add comments, create, delete or move albums around, add keywords (but with some hassle-but it can be done). You can't do anything that requires moving thumbnails around, work with books, slideshows or calendars. Once the two computers are networked together again the library will act as normal.
Now while on the road you can have a "normal" library to import new full sized files, keyword them, add comments, etc. and then transfer to the G5 library. Once in the G5 library they will be represented in a roll(s) and corresponding folder in the Originals folder. You then fire up the "alias" library, and import those new folders in the G5 Originals folder.
It may be a lot of work but it may be one way of doing it.
I've not done any of the "sharing" with iPhoto so don't know if that's another possible candidate for transferring.
P.S. FWIW I've created this workflow for converting from a conventional library to an alias based one.

  • Advice for real performance of LV8.5 operate in the XP and Vista

    Hi all
My company had purchased new computers for LabVIEW programming purpose.
We may install the LV8.5 in these computers but OS are not decided yet. Also, we have the current PC is only XP licensed
Therefore, can anyone give the advice for the real performance advantage of using :
LV8.5 with Vista over LV8.5 with XP
LV8.5 with Vista over LV7.1 with XP
LV7.1 with Vista over LV7.1 with XP
    New computers detail:
    Intel(R) Pentium(R)Dual-Core processor E2160
    BCH-P111 -1.80GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB
    2GB RAM
    Thanks
    Best Regards
    Steve So

The biggest issue I have seen with 8.5 Vista vs. XP is that if you leave Vista in the standard theme, the fonts have changed.  I designed several front panels to have them be out of whack with XP.  So if you are going to be using code across platforms, you need to keep in mind they will look different unless you use the XP theme in Vista, or customize your fonts to make sure they remain the same between the systems.  The dialog font is a different size (13 on Vista vs. 11 on XP), and a different font (can't remember the difference).  That was the big one I noticed.
8.5 over 7.1 is mostly going to be the learning curve to learn the new features.  Overall, I have appreciated the changes, but there are some things (mostly development related) that I have seen run a little slower in 8.5 than in 7.1, but have not noticed any runtime issues as of yet.  One big change between the versions is application building, which is more complex in 8+.  I do appreciate the new features, though, but NIs project still hasn't rubbed me the right way yet.
NI doesn't support LV 7.1 with Vista.  I have used it and haven't seen any problems, but that doesn't mean one won't pop up.  If you're going to stay with 7.1, you better stay with XP.  8.5 is the first version NIs supports as Vista compatible.  You will also have to use a relatively new set of device drivers, so if you have old hardware you are trying to use in your new system, make sure it is cimpatible with the latest drivers.
I have actually had more issues with other hardware drivers and software packages than I have with LabVIEW.  TestStand is not yet supported in Vista, and i found out the hard way, one of the ways it is incompatible and had to move back to XP for devlopment.

    Hi manishcal16PPS,
According to your description, you want to slice the fact data on Year 2014 and Product 4. Now you find the result missing the customer 1 and 4. Right?
In this scenario, based on your Fact Sal table, both customer 1 and 4 are on Year 2015. So when you filter the data, it will not show customer 1 and 4. It returns correct result. For filtering data, either using sub select or specifying slicer axis
    can achieve your requirement.

Yes, I read the figure 128 in regards to the benefit. Something about interleaving, maybe?
In doing a Google search for that article I saw, I found this:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/99215-4gb-ram-my-macbook.html
the maximum amount of RAM your laptop can take is 3.3GB. So while you can physically insert 4GB of RAM, OS X will only be able to see 3.3GB of it.
But I don't know how knowledgeable that poster is who says it can utilize 3.3 GB. I do know that the full 4 GB shows up in the System Profiler on my MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz.
