Best format for emailing short videos

I want to email short edited videos of the kiddo to family and friends but I want it to be the best quality possible to send in email format. I'm in the process of testing different formats to export to but thought I'd ask for tips.
Also, should I not necessarily be looking for the format to come directly from my FCE export or should I be compressing it in some way. I have MPEG Streamclip but am not familiar with Compressor.
Whatever advice you have is much appreciated.

Hey, UTube seems like the best bet, but it sure takes time. Yahoo email has a 10mg limit. That ain't much video. But look, I was on Limewire the other day and I haven't really returned to check this out, but it seems to me Limewire is into peer to peer file sharing in more ways than music. It caught my attention because I have been looking into distribution of video press releases to television stations and not too keen on the traditional ftp route -- too many steps. If I could simply send out an email with a Limewire "search for" title, I might be in...I wonder? Anyone on this?

  • What is the best format for a new video editing hard drive?

    Hello,
I would like to know how to properly format a new 2 TB Hitachi hard drive that I have for my early 2008 Mac Pro that will be installed in drive slot 3. Information at the following link explains that:
"Journaling is essential for OS disks (boot drives), but for disks used for video media, used for editing purposes, Journaling is not advised, as it can affect the speed of data being written. For video media (scratch) drives you would want to select the Mac OS Extended, no journaling."
"Journaling only affects the speed of either writing to or modifying a file, it has no effect on the read speed of files. If you're writing a lot of data, for for a long period of time, like capturing video, the write speed of the data will slow down, as the Journaling record keeps updating it's self."
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/formatting_hd_macstone.html
My question is, is this information legit and should I format my new hard drive using Mac OS Extended? I will be using it solely for the purpose of reading and writing HDV and AVCHD video files using Final Cut Pro 7.
    Thanks
    Tom

    Hi there,
Ive always followed the idea that journalling is turned off, so I would follow the advice given and turn journalling off.
In addition I would also make that drive "private" to spotlight so it doesn't search or catalogue there.
If its of interest, I've always formatted my drives in the following way
    make 2 partitions,
partition 1 - make this about 10% of the drives capacity and label DO NOT USE
partition 2 - make this the remainder of the capacity
the reason being (So Im told by the drive gurus) is that the first sector contains the volumes boot block - this can get corrupted/damaged so having it partitioned like this means you can erase it safely whilst keeping your media.
Ive followed this for years and it has worked on the few occasions a drive has misbehaved.
    cheers
    Andy

  • Procedure and Format for emailing a short video clip from iMovie 08

I use one of the new Panasonic HiDef AVCHD digital video cameras. iMovie 08 works great, no complaints there. From time to time I would like to email very short (5-20 second) video clips, rather than putting them up on iWeb, YouTube, etc.
There are so many "sharing" options, and I haven't had much luck with emailing these short clips. Many of the recipients are Windows users, so I'm not sure QuickTime is the answer. What is the best way to email short video clips from iMovie 08?

What is the best way to email short video clips from iMovie 08?
Assuming you and your recipients' mail clients all allow attachments up to 10 MBs, then a 20-second clip can have a combined data rate of up to 500 KB/s (4.0Mbit/s). This means you can use any share/export compressions format option available to you from within iMovie '08. Therefore, the real question becomes, what compression formats can your recipients play. Have you tried asking them to see if there is a single compression format that everyone can play? If no QT compression format is compatible everyone, then you will likely have to perform a secondary conversion to one that will be compatible. H.264/AAC would provide the smallest files for a given level of quality but require QT 7 (or similar multi-media player). MPEG4/AAC would probably be the most compatible format you can export directly from within iMovie '08. (Would have recommended Sorenson 3/IMA but data rate limitation appears to be ignored.) MPEG-1 files can probably be played by everyone but have higher data rate requirements which may restrict files to SD dimensions and require additional software to create external to iMovie '08. DivX or WMV would probably make your Windows users happy but requires Mac users to have a compatible component for viewing in the QT Player.
Try the "Export using QuickTime" Share menu option ("Movie to MPEG-4") settings:
    Video
    MP4 File Type
    MPEG-4 Improved Compressor
Data rate in the range from 1,000 (640x480) to 3800 (near HD dimensions)
    Current (or user specified) dimensions
    Current Frame Rate
    Key Frame every 24 frames
    Audio:
    AAC-LC Music
    Mono
    64 Kbps Data Rate
    44.1 KHz Sampling Rate
    Better Quality

  • Best Format for Archiving Video Files

I am importing old VHS and 8mm family videos for my cousin, to both burn them to DVD, and to archive the movies in case he wants to edit them later.
I am planning on purchasing for him, a "write once," external HDD, probably firewire, (though I am open to suggestions), to put both the backup Video TS folders on, as well as the Quicktime movies themselves.
My guess is, the best format for the QT movies would be their original DV-NTSC, but at around 13GB an hour, this can add up pretty fast.
The h264 .mov codec looks great, takes forever to render, and it seems the file size difference to DV-NTSC is nominal at best.
Obviously the future is some kind of HD, so these movies will never look great years from now, but I want them to be preserved for him at the best quality possible, at the smallest file size, if it will not compromise the quality too much.
I know I can render them significantly smaller as h264 .mp4 files, or as DIVX, (which also takes a long time), but I imagine they are of significantly reduced quality that would be visible in future video editing he might do.
If DV-NTSC is the only way to go, so be it. But if not, then any suggestions for what other format I could use to save these QT files, without visible loss of quality is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the advice. And I mean everyone.
    Here is my latest dilemma.
Though 15 years old, the original Vhs's play beautifully. Aside from some (expected) glitches in the beginning or end of some of the shots, the video has not degraded appreciably. This is great news, as my cousin wanted to make back ups before degradation begins.
First, I captured the Vhs movies and corrected some bad color, mostly due to poor white balancing, and on the computer, they looked great in comparison. I burned DVD's and they looked terrible in comparison with the originals. Now I know I am going to lose some resolution when going to DVD, but it seemed harsh, so I ran some tests.
I burned a DVD of the original capture, with no color correction, just the raw footage and the DVD did not look much better, so it wasn't the color correction.
Not satisfied, I made a copy from the FCP timeline straight to Vhs, (I should note, through the ADVC-110.) This looked significantly degraded as well.
Finally, I made a straight dub from Vhs to DVCam, figuring that had to look good, and that also looked significantly degraded, compared to the, (now looking pristine), Vhs original.
As the original Vhs looks so good, what good would a TBC do? Or a proc amp?
Is there some secret to capturing and exporting Vhs that I am missing? Or, will it always look significantly degraded, even straight to DVCam?
+David Murray wrote: There is an industrial way to get good VhS copies but it is extremely expensive+
I don't know what this is, but I am sure it is clearly out of our league, but David M., if you are still following this thread, I'm curious, would this ultra expensive method actually result in a dub that looks like the original? I am actually really shocked at how bad the straight DVCam dub looks. It really does not look much better than the color corrected, computer exported version.
The Vhs tapes of my cousins daughter are as precious to him as anything he has.
As they date back 15 years, he is concerned about the longevity of the tapes.
As there are over forty hours of them, he wants them to be in an editable format, so later he or his daughter can make a highlight reel, or whatever. So thus the QT movie archive/backup on HD.
Whether as Finalcutter said, that this drive, even if unused, and put in a cool dry safe, might not function years down the line, makes it iffy, but what other choice is there for editable versions, unless I break the QT movies up into 20 minute chunks and archive them to over a hundred DVD's instead. Perhaps that is the safest solution, though certainly time consuming.
As failure of the HDD somewhere in the future is likely, though not certain, I am still not sure that the HDD holding all his QT movies for future editing is the wrong way to go.
As it is a digital version, and not an analog copy, I get that a DVCam backup of the originals is the best option. I will suggest to him that we do this as well, even though he does not have DVCam himself. But again, is there something I am missing here? Why does the Vhs to DVCam copy look so degraded? Is there anything I can do to keep the original quality, or will it die with his original Vhs as it slowly degrades over time?

  • What Is Best Format to Email?

What is the best format to make a video in to email? Options in iMovie 08 are not that clear to me.
I tried to Export Movie and tried both Tiny and Mobile. Tiny was very small and .3gp format - what is that? What plays that? Don't want to email videos to the grandparents that they can't watch. And, Mobile ended up being quite large - 8 MB. More that most email servers will allow.
So, I tried to Export to Quicktime. Tried both to Quicktime and MPEG-4, in various settings. Seems I always get huge file size - smallest I got in MPEG-4 was about 29 MB!
    Help!

What is the best format to make a video in to email?
To answer that you have to first ask yourself what platform and/or media players are you targeting. Frankly, there is no one format suits everyone without a bit of cooperation between the sender and recipient. All of the iMovie default presets are in H.264/AAC. So a recipient must have QT 7 or equivalent media player. Then next thing to look at is the ISP/Web limitations -- that is, if you are sending a standalone file, you are usually limited to about 10 MB file attachments and if your are sending QuickTime Media Links, reference files, or URLs pointing to uploaded content, then you must consider the combined total data rate of the content and how it may impact on "Fast Start" content.
In short, H.264/AAC compressed files usually provide the most compact file size and lowest data rates for a given level of quality. However, they generally require newer versions of media software and higher powered platforms. MPEG4/AAC is probably a more widely acceptable format but is less efficient than H.264/AAC. Still older compression formats would tend to be even more universal in terms of compatibility but less efficient in terms of file size and data rates. For example, almost anyone can play a correctly encoded MPEG-1 file without timecode breaks and which are properly terminated (two things about which QT is very fussy) but this generally requires external conversion. Most Windows users may prefer DivX and/or WMV encoded files (which also have to be encoded external to iMovie '08). I would personally avoid the older AVI file formats since it is no longer supported by Microsoft and there are hundreds of audio/video compression format combinations and many are not supported by the Mac platform and/or current operating systems. Another option would be to post your files to a site like YouTube which then reconverts your files to Flash and plays them back in their own media player so everyone can watch them.
Options in iMovie 08 are not that clear to me.
Since there a probably an infinite number of strategies and opinions here (i.e., everyone has their own), would assume that Apple is allowing each user to more or less find his or her own level of understanding and expertise as to how to best share/export their projects.
Tiny was very small and .3gp format - what is that? What plays that?
3GP is normally associate with cell phone compatible content. As to display size, it is directly related to the issues of file size and data rates. Basically, the larger you encode the display, the more data the file must contain for a desired level of quality. On the other hand, if you keep the display size constant and lower the amount of data included in the file, you end up with a smaller file but with less quality. Basically, you need to find a compromise between the minimum acceptable level of quality and the minimum acceptable display size using the compression format you decide to use for distribution.
Don't want to email videos to the grandparents that they can't watch. And, Mobile ended up being quite large - 8 MB. More that most email servers will allow... So, I tried to Export to Quicktime. Tried both to Quicktime and MPEG-4, in various settings. Seems I always get huge file size - smallest I got in MPEG-4 was about 29 MB!
Remember, you files don't have to be sent as an E-Mail attachment. If the grandparents have an AIM, iChat, or other IM, you can always send "oversized" file content peer-to-peer via these services. Or, if you and/or they have a server account (.Mac, MyFamily.com, or similar account and/or server space provided by your ISP), you can always FTP the movies to a server and allow recipients to view and/or download the content if/when they desire. In fact, if you have a .Mac account, you can upload iMovie '08 content directly from the editor.

  • What is the best way to email a video from iPhoto? It won't let me share a video!

what is the best way to email a video from iPhoto? It won't let me share a video!

Size is not the issue. In the old iPhoto you used to be able to share a video and it would compress it to fit an email friendly size. It doesn't do that anymore from iPhoto. I miss that feature. I have to export the video from iPhoto to my desktop then take into the old Quicktime 7 to share in email. Crazy.
It shouldn't be that complicated. I shouldn't have to find a work around. I guess apple wants to put  you in a box so you have to do it "their way" via uploading to iWeb or iCloud instead of emailing video.
I don't like those options being taken away.  While the quality may suffer by compressing for email, it is still the most direct and unconvoluted way of sharing something fairly quickly. I don't want to have to post to YouTube or Vimeo or iCloud and send a link. Just compress the video and hit send in an email and be done with it.

  • Best format for DVD studio pro??

I will be exporting from FCP4.5 and am wondering what is the best format to get the best possible quality from FCP to DVDSP? Also, should I go through compressor and what settings should I use?
I also want to make my own video transistions, what is the best format for those as well?
    Thank You

    The movie is 90 minutes.
You didn't mention your video format. You can export your movie as QuickTime Movie (not QT Conversion), same settings and self contained (my favorite flavor). The use that movie in Compressor and use the Best Quality DVD: 90 min presets encoding your video to MPEG2 and your audio to Dolby 2 (AC3).
That's the best standard workflow. With standard I mean that sometimes some kind of footage can need different treatment.
    Hope that helps !

  • Best Format For Front Row

Hi what is the best format for videos in front row? Most videos I have are avis so I had been saving them as .mov files instead until recently when I discovered I could export them to Mpeg4 and in the process make them widescreen - I also noticed that when I saved these videos as .mov they took up about 5 gb but as mp4 they took up 500mb. So anyone have any opinions on what is the best way to do it?
    Cheers

AVI and MOV are both simply "containers". The video and audio files inside them can be many formats with less or more compression. The MPEG-4 compression can be very good, of course, depending on the quality of the original file. The MOV files you saved must be using a different type of video compression that may be better quality but takes up more hard drive space. The "best" type of compression is probably a personal choice. What type of software are you using to save the files? QuickTime Pro?

  • The best format for output

    Hi All,
working in animation project to be broadcasted on a TV channel as HD1080 50i,
1- all the animation layers was rendered from TOONBOOM as .SWF to keep it in vector for compositing issue.
Dose SWF lose any quality? we always use TGA sequence with alpha in our past SD projects but now we found SWF is a smaller file size and allows zooming Because it keeps all vector lines.
2- compositing each scene in after effects cs6 and then render them.
What is the best format for output to deal with premiere cs6 as a real time playback ( my editing pc includes gtx680 4gb., many HGST 3tb with raid controller,64g ram, aja kona 3g) so do I go with TGA sequence (I think it will destroy the raid Because of the large number of small-sized files in read and write ) or MOV uncompressed (I'm afraid of the space size and don’t know it will play in real time ) or what is the best compressed format Maintaining video image quality as its now will be my only master source?
    Many thanks,
    sherif

    Thanks Rick for your reply,
Regarding the SWF i moved to flash pro forums and they are supporting me now,
My system is a pc, win.64, I7-3930K, 64G RAM, EVGA GTX680 4G, Many HGST 3TB with raid controler,
Some advised me to go with Quicktime Prores HQ or DNXHD or DPX ,
In this year project my client's requirement for delivery is :
DNxHD 120 Codec, wrapped with QuickTime rapper, which means a file with MOV extension and the codec used is DNxHD 120 ( 1080@50i HD)
So do i work with dnxhd 120 from the beginning to the delivery? (and it will be my only master source) or another format encode it at the end to dnxhd 120? ( i will distribut this project to many channels after the first run exclusivity period end with different requirements).
    Thanks,

  • Best notebook for editing HD videos?

I consider to buy a MacBookPro or MacBookAir. Which one is the best choice for editing HD videos?

    You don't want a MacBook Air, a 13" or a 2.0 Ghz 15" for professional work.
You need the 2.2 Ghz 15" anti-glare, high res, MacBook Pro or better. (has the 1GB Radeon 6750M)
    The 17" is prefered because it's screen is 1920 x 1200, so 1080i (1920 x 1080 pixels) is WYSIWYG.
You need the anti-glare because your going to be using it for professional work in many environments that you can't control the glare, you need to be able to see the entire screen.
If your ordering online, get the 7,200 RPM drive. Else it's not that much difference from the 5,400 RPM store sold models. Get the 8GB of RAM installed right when you purchase and also AppleCare.
    Good luck.
