Best format to save all vhs tapes for future fce

game plan....in panther i am converting all my vhs tapes to dv into fce, then cutting out any junk shots and then exporting to my huge external drive for future use in fce to make movies to idvd 5.
keeping in mind that quality is utmost important.. even though vhs is already soso..so i think a hi compression is a no no.
since fce works in qt do i just export qt movie or should i consider qt conversion to dv stream? mpeg 4 ? or ?????
plus,, 5 years from now i dont want to have it in a format that no longer is in use...

Just use the native Quicktime format of FCE. Don't use any conversion. Just the Quicktime Movie option on export.

  • Best way to "backup" a VHS tape

    Hi,
I was wondering if I could hear some suggestions regarding the backing up of analog assets (like old VHS tapes).
For example, I have imported an old VHS tape from a VCR into iMovie (using the "pass-through" feature of my MiniDV camcorder) - the darn import took 25 GB of hard disk space!
I don't really want to edit the footage I imported - I just want to make sure that it isn't deteriorating by sitting on that VHS tape anymore. Should I just make a simple iDVD project and burn the footage to DVD?
How are YOU "preserving" this type of old footage?
Again, any opinions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I own 50 years of home movie archives on film (8 mm and Super 8), on VHS and S-VHS, on 8mm, Hi-8 and DV tape. More worried about projectors and tape decks becoming unavailable than actual film or tape deterioration, I started converting all the valuable footage to digital data or QuickTime files. After many trials, I settled for the following method.
I project the film on an Optex transfer box and shoot it with a digital FireWire camera plugged into my computer, without using tape. The camera aperture control must be manual; I also adjust the aperture of the camera on the fly and capture the data in Final Cut Pro.
I use the best available tape deck or camcorder to play the tapes; I connect them to the computer through a Sony iLink Digital AV interface box.
Once the material is in FCP, roughly 13 Gig per hour of material, I do a rough cut, eliminating everything that's not worth keeping, for lack of quality or redundancy. I also make cuts where warranted between scenes.
Then I use FCP's Media manager to duplicate my project and save the valuable material to a new project. I rename the scenes, group them in batches of roughly 20 minutes and burn them to DVD-R's in DATA format.
Takes a lot of DVD's, but they come cheap, don't they. I also keep the originals in a safe place, just in case!

  • CONVERTING VHS TAPES FOR PREMIER

    Hello,
I have many analog VHS tapes that I would like to import into Premier. Can this be done direct or is there an intermediate software that the tapes need to first be input to and then possibly converted to a Premier friendly digital file.  These are not commercial tapes or movies with copyright protection but rather family vacation and home movie material. I recentlly began using a product to convert vinyl to digital audio files and I am hoping that there is something similar for VHS material. I am currently running with PE 4.0..Thanks Tom T

I am using Acoustica's Spin It Again Ver.2.
    http://www.acoustica.com/spinitagain/index.htm
It has a very easy to use interface and has a host of cleanup combinations to minimize clicks and pops and tape hiss. Its only tricky quality is the feature that auto sets its recording level. In order for the auto feature to set itself properly you need to play the loudest passage of the record your transferring. That isn't always easy to either remember from having played it or finding it on the record without some sampling.
If you already have a stereo with a record output, turntable and a cassette tape deck its almost plug and play. You can begin transferring almost immediatly. The computer also needs to have an audio input as well. I've had two computers dating back to the late ninteys and both had them.
The only other feature that can be a little troublesome is the feature that breaks the recording into tracks. That requires a break in the audio. But all is fixable after the transfer. I like playing around so I don't mind going in and adjusting as necessary but for most albums it works just fine.
If your hooked up to the internet while your transferring it also has a nifty lookup feature that will automatically plug in all the track titles from what must be the largest database of recordings in the world. This is really neat and saves a lot of typing.
It has a voice prompt setup wizard, which you can turn off once you get the hang of everything and a fairly decent instuction book plus a users forum as well to help with any difficulties with setup and operation. There are other softwares on the market but this one gives the best performance for the non audio engineers among us, and for the cost.  Even they, who populate the forum like this product for its diversity, ease of use, and quality of transfers.
I hope that this helps. Hollar if you need more details.......Tom T

  • What is the Best Format to Save Photo Files?

When I open and edit photos from my digital camera in Photoshop, is it best to always save it as a .PSD as I go?  I read that a JPEG will lose quality each time I re-save...is this also true of a .PSD?
Also, I'm trying to use some photos on a web-page's slideshow, and that web site recommends using "Saving For Web" at 72dpi in Photoshop so it can be viewed at it's best quality.  I tried "Saving for Web" but did not see where to choose the 72dpi setting.  How do I do this?
By the way, I'm using Photoshop Elements 6.0

Save For Web always exports with a 72 ppi resolution. All you need to worry about is the image size, quality, and format. BTW, you should save with a different name as you don't want to overwrite your files with a 72 ppi resolution which looks good on monitor but is NOT good for printing.
There's a video about using Save For Web here:
    http://www.photoshopsupport.com/elements/tt/save-for-web.html
    Tutorial for it here:

Personally, I always work on a copy of my original as I want to keep the original in case I decide to redo it at some point...maybe my retouching skills improve, I simply change my mind, or maybe there's a technology improvement down the line like better noise reduction or maybe some sort of anti-blur fix (Okay, I'm a dreamer...)
PSD files are non lossy...meaning you do not lose quality when they are resaved. JPGs are a lossy format meaning you do lose quality. Personally, I keep my originals and keep my wk in progress in PSD. I only save to JPG when completely done if needed.

  • ProRes versions of VHS tapes for archival purposes

I need to create archival digital copies of some aging VHS tapes. I have a sony mini-dv deck that I used with iMovie as a passthrough for my VHS deck. Final Cut Pro X won't let me import the footage without the timecode. I know other people have had the same issue and they end up using iMovie but I haven't seen a solution that will allow me to import the video Pro Res quality. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kara

I recently archived about 400 hrs of original VHN footage shot back in 1985-95 era. Majority of them were captured directly via s-video cable and rca audio. The codec I used was DV25 and few DV50. Pro Res is quite overkill for VHS. The format is a mere 240 lines. Quite outdated to today's 1080p TV standards. Used FCP 7 and no tc needed. When comes to edit, switched to FCP X.
When you're doing DV on any deck, you're adding another layer of hardware decode and encode. DV has a 5:1 compression ratio w/ 4:1:1 sampling. It's not the best intermediate format. I'd try to minimize anything via DV and get it directly by using real time hardware. But this needs a decent capture card to do the job right the first time.
But for Betacam SP w/ analog component, I did capture via DV50 and Pro Res std. That should preserve ther analog 4:2:2 Beta SP tape formats.

  • Save all variables state for next execution

Hello everybody, I am trying to save all the variables values of my Main VI in order to have the exact same state (same settings, devices addresses, array or enum values and so on) on the next execution of the program.
My idea is to analyze each variable reference and to save its state (variable name+value) in a text data before the program is closed (or for example every 10 minutes).
The problem is that some of my programs have a complex structure (for example a Register Tab with an Array of Clusters with Arrays inside the cluster) and the subVI I developed is getting more and more complex (and I'm not scalable enough) so I am here to ask for ideas in order to reach my goal.
So far I developed a simple subVI that according to the Reference ClassID converts the reference to it's specific type and converts the information (variable name and variable value) to a string, and this works for Strings, Numeric, Boolean and Enum. When I have a Register Tab I analyze each page reference and the references in it, when I have an Array of something simple I run the SubVI, but when the element in the array is a cluster I have to analyze each element through my subVI and so on and so on.
As you can see the complexity grows very fast and I think recursive VI is probably an option (but I don't know how to develope it in my case).
Last but not least I have to find a way to code all those strings that describe the values so that I can read them and set all the values back.
I hope you can help me!! Thanks in advance!
    Dario Cassaniti

There's actually already a VI in OpenG that can be used to read and store all front panel controls as a variant in a .ini file.

  • How do I allow my users to set the option to save a new timezone for future sessions?

The option to save a newly selected timezone for future sessions has been greyed-out
in the Calendar Client. How can I allow my users to choose this option?
    <P>
This is controlled by the settimezone setting on the Calendar Server. By
default, it is set to FALSE. You can change the value to TRUE in the
    unison.ini settings. The
Calendar Server must be restarted for the change to take effect.

    Hi,
Based my research, OOB SharePoint don’t allow anonymous users to contribute contents(Edit, Upload and Add) into list and library.
This is by design behavior, and it’s a consideration about security in order to help protect your site from potential script injection attacks.
For anonymous users, only the View Item permission is available for libraries.

  • Best format to save HD video for iPad 2

What is the most effecient way to save an HD video (from iMovie '11 for Mac) with the intended purpose of uploading to an iPad 2 then using the Apple AV adapter to display on a 52" HDTV? I want to lose as little detail as possible which is why I don't want to put it on a DVD. I also don't want to end up with a 20GB file that the iPad will choke on. The video itself is 15 min. and contains a mix of SD and HD clips. Thanks.

    Hi Magnus40,
I'm not sure what you are doing to create this problem. I create web movies all the time and have never had this problem, although, I never use the advanced settings cos I have never had to. When you go to the Quicktime export pane in iMovie you have the quality choices from full quality to web. When you select one of these it gives an estimate of the file size. For that length clip you should not need to use any setting besides full quality. I'd say the problem is coming from the 480x360 aspect ratio. This is what is compressing the file. Have you tried exporting it as full quality and then uploading it? The only problem you face by doing this is, it will take a long time for the movie to load on your website. For a short clip you may find that the CD ROM setting is sufficient.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to save an InDesign file for fast/highest res. web viewing

Help... I've got a 118 page InDesign file created in InDesign CS 3.0.1 that I need to prepare for viewing in a web page flipper program.  I've saved as jpgs straight from InDesign and also as pdfs from Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional.  Either works, but if I increase the resolution, the file loads too slowly.  I want to increase readability while still maintaining a reasonable load time.  The link to the file I have online is here:  http://www.lazyeranch.net/pageflippers/09RUIpreview2/
    Any suggestions?

    rob day wrote:
I don't think you're going to see any benefit from changing the res and color space of the individual linked files. When you export a PDF you can control the color space of the linked files via Output>Color>Destination (for the web you would choose Convert to Destination and sRGB as the Destination). And you can control the resolution and compression of the linked files via Compression>Bicubic Downsampling.
When exporting jpegs the export space is RGB and you can choose your res.
Good point. Early versions of ID didn't allow you to choose resolution for jpeg export though, as I recall, nor does ID have a very good reputation when it comes to jpeg export in any version. (Disclaimer -- I've never exported a jpeg directly from ID).
If you want jpegs, common wisdom is to export a good PDF, then rasterize and save in Photoshop where you have more control. Again, that part could be batched in Photoshop using an action.

  • What is the best format to save in computer playback to match the quality of my camera ( MP4 1080p) - NTSC provides poor quality, MPEG2 files are too large?

I am editing video and would like to share these at the same quality and size as  the original file - MP4 1080 film clips. I am downloading these files to Google, or to another network. Choices under computer viewing result in the following - NTSC provides poor quality and the MP2 1080 more than doubles the file size. Any better choices?

What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system is it running?
What is your camera? Can we assume your videos from the camera are AVCHD.mp4 (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second?) What is the bitrate and duration of the file?
What is your file size requirement for the export?
H.264.mp4 is a frequently used format used for uploads to various web sites. You can find that format in Premiere Elements in the Share or Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD (most often used) or Share or Publish+Share/Mobile Phones and Players.
Please explain what you mean when you mention NTSC versus MPEG2...I understand MPEG2.mpg or MPEG2.m2t, but what do you mean by NTSC.as an export format.
I will fine tune (customize the reply) with some more details as indicated.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thank you.
