Best Formula for Timelapse footage

I have heard everything from rolling on say some clouds for set amount of time with the camera locked down on a tripod and then speeding the footage up to like 2000% in FCP. I have heard some people achieve a smooth time lapse by using a still camera to capture the images. For those that have done smooth timelapses please share your thoughts and suggestions. There is a show I watch on A&E called "The First 48" that uses a ton of smooth timelapse footage during the show. I want my footage to look like that.

Hello DVX100Shooter,
the most important factor for me is the location - make sure you film somewhere, where nobody will step into the accidentally
It all depends very much on what you want to shoot. If your timeframe for filming is not longer than 15 min you can easily get away with simply importing the clip and speeding it up in FCP - it does look smooth enough.
For shots up to an hour, I would recommend a different capture software that actually captures your footage at a rate of, say, 1 frame/sec. I like to use BTV Pro for that (http://www.bensoftware.com/) and the results are very good. I then import the resulting clip into FCE and adjust the speed/duration to my needs. This has the obvious advantage that your HDD is not being filled up with hours of video, in order to create a few clips.
Another capture software is iStopmotion - it kept crashing on me, but others have reported excellent results.
If you want to produce the kind of amazing clips, you see sometimes in documentaries (e.g. from sunrise to sunset in 10 sec.), you'll have to employ different methods of shooting, as you will have to get all the footage on one tape (changing tapes will interupt - unless you're very fast :-)). A major problem can be power supply, when shooting outdoors .... you'll need good planning and logistics here.
Professional camcorders can capture real time lapse, whereas consumer and prosumer models only do so-called "interval" filming (e.g. they shoot 1 sec every 30 sec). This will result in a very stuttering video.
I have read somewhere on discussions that Adobe Premiere has a function that lets you control the camera, so you can capture single frames at reguar intervals. That would be an excellent tool for extended timelapse capture - granted you keep the power up and running.
I've heard good things about building timelapse shots out of single photos taken with a still camera, but have to say I have no experience with that.
hope this helps

  • What is the best compression for HD footage for online use?

I have a sequence with the following specs:
HD (960x720) (16:9), HD 960x720 aspect ratio, DVCPRO HD 720p60 compressor and need to output a 300x250 file for an online banner.
Was wondering what you think the best looking compression would be for me to use plus whats the best way for me to keep the aspect ratio consistent within the new dimensions.
Any help would be much appreciated! thanks!

While a lot of people have Flash, not all of them have the latest version (or even the previous version). Newer versions of the Flash Player support better video codecs. I still encounter people (corporations) that are still only using Flash Player 7…

  • Best format for HDV footage online

I'm wondering what format people are using to export their HDV footage for online consumption.
I've tried all the preset avilable in PP CS3 and either the quality sucks or the file size is way too big.
I've seen a bunch of HDV footage online and some incredible looking video (really HDV quality looking) but can't seem to get the correct settings to achieve that.
It is also possible I don't understand all the pull down kinds of things. I'm shooting at 30f. The footage is primarily intended for online/computer rather than HDTV.
Also does smaller dimensions automatically mean reduced quality? I've seem some great looking HD quality videos online and the "HD" quality is quite apparent.

    Steve,
Dimensions that will be effective (for online purposes, assuming the visitor has a high bandwidth connection).
I believe 1/4 the original size of HDV will be a good starting place. So that's 480x 270 (or is it 360x270).
That's the other thing, I see some HDV online that seem wider than others. Is that because they were shot using 24f?
I've tried the various formats the media encoder allows for. I'm not really happy with the resulting quality of any of the formats. As mentioned to Christopher, the smaller I make the dimensions the worse the quality gets.
The Quicktime format in particular sucks (at least with encoded using PP CS3). The resulting video looks completely washed out and artificial). I have seen other people post their footage using quicktime and it looks great (no color correction).
The other question is: Seing that the main intent is for online purposes, should I shoot at 720p instead?

  • Best compression for HDV footage

i got a 15 minute final production that was shot in HDV, im new to compressor but did a sucessful export and test viewing this morning , but im not sure if it was the best setting or if there are tweaks that should be made.
    i used HD DVD MPEG-2 30 minutes
    Dolby Digital Professional 2.0
    HD MPEG-2 19.0Mbps
    any tips appreciated.

There are always tweaks. I would make sure that the attributes for the setting I'm using are correct for my source. You know, right frame rate, field dominance, etc. I guess you've figured out how much space you have vs. what you need, so playing with the bit rate doesn't sound like it's something you're worried about. Compressor has some filters that may or may not be useful. It can preview them in the preview window. I would only make my final determination after viewing my DVD on a real player piping out the signal to an t.v. or ntsc/pal monitor. Given that you've successfully created your stream, right now it comes down to art.

  • Best Sequence for mixed footage

    Gurus,
What is the best sequence settings to use if mixing HDV 720p, HDV 1080i, 24p, and Standard 29.97 NTSC DV formats in the same project? Final delivery will be SD DVD/and web.
    Thanks in advance!
    Matt

I will be mixing a small amount of beta/miniDV footage into the sequence
How will you be bringing this in? DV I see as via firewire, but beta? If you had a capture card, you could upconvert those to HD ProRes.
So, Do I upconvert the SD to ProRes, and work in a Pro Res sequence?
    Yes.
Or do I down convert the Pro Res to SD, and work in the standard DV NTSC perameters? Again, I'm finishing to SD DVD/Web. Appreciate any advice!
Well then, downconvert the HD to SD and work in DV/NTSC.

  • What's the Best Method for Upresing Footage from SD to HD?

We've got a project we did for a client that they would like to be upresed from 720x480 at 30fps interlaced to 1080i.  Is there one method that is better than another?
    Thanks.

Here is a second vote for Red Giant Instant HD. It is very good, though will never be anywhere as good as starting with HD material. Still, it should get you by OK.

  • What's best strategy for dealing with 40+ hours of footage

We have been editing a documentary with 45+ hours of footage and presently have captured roughly 230 gb. Needless to say it's a lot of files. What's the best strategy for dealing with so much captured footage? It's almost impossible to remember it all and labeling it while logging it seems inadequate as it difficult to actually read comments in dozens and dozens of folders.
Just looking for suggestions on how to deal with this problem for this and future projects.
    G5 Dual Core 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 g ram, 2 internal sata 2 250gb

Ditto, ditto, ditto on all of the previous posts. I've done four long form documentaries.
First I listen to all the the sound bytes and digitize only the ones that I think I will need. I will take in much more than I use, but I like to transcribe bytes from the non-linear timeline. It's easier for me.
I had so many interviews in the last doc that I gave each interviewee a bin. You must decide how you want to organize the sound bytes. Do you want a bin for each interviewee or do you want to do it by subject. That will depend on you documentary and subject matter.
I then have b-roll bins. Sometime I base them on location and sometimes I base them on subject matter. This last time I based them on location because I would have a good idea of what was in each bin by remembering where and when it was shot.
Perhaps, you weren't at the shoot and do not have this advantage. It's crucial that you organize you b-roll bins in a way that makes sense to you.
I then have music bins and bins for my voice over.
Many folks recommend that you work in small sequences and nest. This is a good idea for long form stuff. That way you don't get lost in the timeline.
I also make a "used" bin. Once I've used a shot I pull it out of the bin and put it "away" That keeps me from repeatedly looking at footage that I've already used.
The previous posts are right. If you've digitized 45 hours of footage you've put in too much. It's time to start deleting some media. Remember that when you hit the edit suite, you should be one the downhill slide. You should have a script and a clear idea of where you're going.
I don't have enough fingers to count the number of times that I've had producers walk into my edit suite with a bunch of raw tape and tell me that that "want to make something cool." They generally have no idea where they're going and end up wondering why the process is so hard.
Refine your story and base your clip selections on that story.
    Good luck

  • Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

    Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.
Here's an example of what I did recently with my own settings:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFV4sT7rHGs
I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?
    Thanks!

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)
Also, Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549
Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

  • Best practice for video storage?

What is the best way for storing videos on external drives? I am a new FCP user coming from Sony Vegas. In Vegas I could import the .mts files into Vegas without the need of the complete file structure as FCP requires when ingesting to ProRes. Since Vegas worked in this manner, I store the .mts files in folders that are dated when shot. Now I'm faced with finding another program to convert to ProRes as FCP needs to complete file structure to ingest media. Another issue is that I have different types of shoots on one single flash card and I can no longer just dump the .mts files in dated folders. What is the best way of splitting up the flash card, yet keeping the required information FCP needs for ingesting media?
The solution would be to dump the videos to my external drive as soon as I'm done shooting, but most likely it's something I'll forget to do.
Anyone have any advice on storing videos that have two plus types footage of different events?

I have a tutorial that covers this...

  • Best Practice for Using Static Data in PDPs or Project Plan

    Hi There,
I want to make custom reports using PDPs & Project Plan data.
What is the Best Practice for using "Static/Random Data" (which is not available in MS Project 2013 columns) in PDPs & MS Project 2013?
Should I add that data in Custom Field (in MS Project 2013) or make PDPs?

    Hi Dale,
I have a Project Level custom field "Supervisor Name" that is used for Project Information.
For the purpose of viewing that "Project Level custom field Data" in
Project views , I have made Task Level custom field
    "SupName" and used Formula:
    [SupName] = [Supervisor Name]
That shows Supervisor Name in Schedule.aspx

  • Best practice for importing non-"Premiere-ready" video files

    Hello!
I work with internal clients that provide me with a variety of differnet video types (could be almost ANYTHYING, WMV, MP4, FLV).  I of course ask for AVIs when possible, but unfortunately, I have no control over the type of file I'm given.
And, naturally, Premiere (just upgraded to CS5) has a hard time dealing with these files.  Unpredictable, ranging from working fine to not working at all, and everything in between.  Naturally, it's become a huge issue for turnaround time.
Is there a best practice for preparing files for editing in Premiere?
I've tried almost everything I can think of:  converting the file(s) to .AVIs using a variety of programs/methods.  Most recently, I tried creating a Watch Folder in Adobe Media Encoder and setting it for AVI with the proper aspect ratio.  It makes sense to me that that should work:using an Adobe product to render the file into something Premiere can work with.
However, when I imported the resulting AVI into Premiere, it gave me the Red Line of Un-renderness (that is the technical term, right?), and had the same sync issue I experienced when I brought it in as a WMV.
Given our environment, I'm completely fine with adding render time to the front-end of projects, but it has to work.  I want files that Premiere likes.
THANK YOU in advance for any advice you can give!
    -- Dave

I use an older conversion program (my PrPro has a much older internal AME, unlike yours), DigitalMedia Converter 2.7. It is shareware, and has been replaced by Deskshare with newer versions, but my old one works fine. I have not tried the newer versions yet. One thing that I like about this converter is that it ONLY uses System CODEC's, and does not install its own, like a few others. This DOES mean that if I get footage with an oddball CODEC, I need to go get it, and install it on the System.
I can batch process AV files of most types/CODEC's, and convert to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio and at 29.97 FPS (I am in NTSC land). So far, 99% of the resultant converted files have been perfect, whether from DivX, WMV, MPEG-2, or almost any other format/CODEC. If there is any OOS, my experience has been that it will be static, so I just have to adjust the sync offset by a few frames, and that takes care of things.
In a few instances, the PAR flag has been missed (Standard 4:3 vs Widescreen 16:9), but Interpret Footage has solved those few issues.
Only oddity that I have observed (mostly with DivX, or WMV's) is that occasionally, PrPro cannot get the file's Duration correct. I found that if I Import those problem files into PrElements, and then just do an Export, to the same exact specs., that resulting file (seems to be 100% identical, but something has to be different - maybe in the header info?) Imports perfectly into PrPro. This happens rarely, and I have the workaround, though it is one more step for those. I have yet to figure out why one very similar file will convert with the Duration info perfect, and then a companion file will not. Nor have I figured out exactly what is different, after running through PrE. Every theory that I have developed has been shot down by my experiences. A mystery still.
AME works well for most, as a converter, though there are just CODEC's, that Adobe programs do not like, such as DivX and Xvid. I doubt that any Adobe program will handle those suckers easily, if at all.
    Good luck,

  • Query Best Practice for Reports

I am new to Apex and I am wondering what is the best practice for store your sql quries for reports.  I am a believer of storing all sql behind pacakge functions or procedures.  And it looks like the only options for report pages are to use a direct SQL query, or a function that returns a query as a string.  Yes the function method counts as putting the code in Oracle but not really.  It is still getting compiled and parsed on the Apex side.  It would be nice if Apex could handle a cursor but I have read that it doesn't directly. You have to have a function that returns a cursor and then create a pipelined function that calls the cursor function.  That is kind of silly.  Is there some other way to do this?
    Apex 4.2
    Oracle 11.2.0.2
    Thanks for any input.
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
I'm not necessarily a believer in packaging queries. I'm a little more pragmatic in that I believe it may make sense in environments where you have a client environment that just expects a result set that is then manipulated by the client for the purposes of presentation, pagination etc. Apex has a different architecture in that the client is purely an HTML presentation layer (browser) and the presentation, pagination etc is formulated in the database along with the data using the Oracle web toolkit, which is a set of internal packages that produce HTML. Note that handling and manipulating ref cursors inside PL/SQL is not a joy, they were mainly designed to be passed out to external clients. (Often to shield programmers who don't or won't even try to understand relational concepts)
This means that when you create a report based on a query, the Apex engine will manipulate that base query, depending on the display requirements and pagination requirements of your report, before it submits that query to the database for execution. To get an idea of how this manipulation occurs, you can run your report in debug mode and check the actual query that is submitted to the database. If the query is presented as an already executed ref cursor, then the Apex engine can't execute in the way that it does. As you have already found out, the only way of using packaged queries returning ref cursors is by the use of a pipelined function, so that the Apex engine can treat the result as a normal query.
This is the architecture of Apex, and I suspect that re-engineering the Apex engine to handle ref cursors natively, as opposed to using a pipelining trick, would be a considerable change. I hope this at least helps to explain why ref cursors and Apex don't mix. I personally don't see the purpose of having an abstraction layer of packaged queries below an abstraction layer of an API such as Apex. SQL is a perfectly good API.
    Regards
    Andre

  • Formula for completion date

Need to create a formula for this..
If a project completes on A and the date lies between B & C then "display late by 10 days"
if a project completes on D and the date lies between E & F then "display late by 20 days"   and so on , there are 100's of projects and hundreds of completion dates.
what would be the best approach for this?
    Any suggestions appreciated

You really need a Project target or due date and then calculate days late
    @Late
    If completiondate > targetdate then
    datediff("d", targetdate, completiondate) else 0
You can then do banding on this
    @overdue
If @late = 0 then 'Not Due' else
If @late in 1 to 9 then 'Less than 10 days overdue'
    else
    etc.
    Hope that helps

  • When bouncing- what's best method for smallest file size/highest quality?

I am in the process of embedding 3 mp3's into a PDF to submit as a portfolio. The PDF also has text, and two scores included, and with the 3 embedded mp3's it can't be more than 10mb.
So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality? And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's. I basically need them to be about 3 mb each. Two of the recordings sound OK at that size, but they are just MIDI(one project is piano and string quartet, the other is just piano- all software instruments. The recording that combines MIDI and Audio and has more tracks (three audio tracks and 10 Midi/software instrument tracks)and sounds completely horrible if I get it under 5 mb as an mp3. The problem is that I need all three to equal around 9mb, but still sound good enough to submit as a portfolio for consideration into a Master's program.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Please be detailed in your response, because I am new to logic and I really need the step by step.
    Thank you...

The highest bitrate that falls within your limits. You'll have to calculate how big your MP3's can be, then choose the bitrate that keeps the size within your limit. The formula is simple: bitrate is the number of kilobits per second, so a 46 second stereo file at 96 kbps would be 96 x 46 = 4416 kbits / 8* = 552 kBytes or 0.552 MB. (*8 bits = 1 Byte)
So if you know the length of your tracks you can calculate what bitrate you need to keep it within 10 MB total.
I consider 128 kbps the lowest bearable bitrate for popsongs and other modern drumkit based music. Deterioration of sound quality is often directly related to the quality of the initial mix and the type of instruments used in it. Piano(-like) tones tend to sound watery pretty quickly at lower bitrates, as do crash and ride cymbals. But don't take my word for it, try it out.
And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
You can only ZIP the whole thing after that, but that is just for transport. You'll have to unzip it again to use it. And no, you cannot compress an MP3 any further and still play it.
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's.
That is silly, you could have done that in Logic, which has one of the best MP3 encoders built in. And how good encoders are will especially come out at bitrates around or below 128, which you might be looking at.
I basically need them to be about 3 mb each.
So, one more scrap of info we need here: how long are those three pieces, exactly? I'll calculate the bitrate for you - but please bounce 'm directly out of Logic as MP3's. They will very probably sound better than your WAV-conversions made with Switch.
