There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X, but Trojans are a different matter.

No antivirus software is needed.
Install all System, Applications and Security updates released by Apple.

What's the best free anti-virus software to use?
I'm looking for the best FREE anti-virus software for personal use. Suggestions? If you could give me the top 2-3 or those that clearly separate themselves from the pack, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Darien,
Allan is right it's really not needed for MacOSX, but if you feel you need protection from viruses/malware download and install ClamXav. If you want real time scanning for files and downloads use the Clam Sentry feature. Open ClamXav, go to preferences activate clam sentry, when asked what folder to watch just enter the / which will monitor your entire system. Hope this helps.

BEST FREE REGISTRY CLEANER FOR WINDOWS 7
WHAT IS THE BEST FREE REGISTRY CLEANER FOR WINDOWS 7?

Ouch! Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if you type normally,
in mixed case.
Registry cleaning programs are all snake oil. Cleaning of the
registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and
don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.
The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

Let me point out that neither I nor anyone else who warns against the
use of registry cleaners has ever said that they always cause
problems. If they always caused problems, they would disappear from
the market almost immediately. Many people have used a registry
cleaner and never had a problem with it.
Rather, the problem with a registry cleaner is that it carries with it
the substantial risk of having a problem. And since there is no
benefit to using a registry cleaner, running that risk is a very bad
bargain.

Anti-virus for Windows on my Mac Pro
I have recently purchased my Mac Pro and would like to install VMware Fusion in order to put Windows Vista on my system. (Have a lot of old PC storage I want to bring in.) What is a good anti-virus program for this type of installation?
Thanks,
3D DadI use Fusion to run Win XP Pro on my Mac Pro, as well. While I mostly use it to access my company's network using a set of company-supplied Windows utilities -- I'm satisfied with the overall result. For anti-virus protection, I use AVG Free Anti-Virus. Every time I run Fusion or Boot Camp, AVG Free AV checks for updates (too frequently, for my preferences); but it scans my system for viruses every time as well (a scan frequency that I really like). So, overall, it works well.
I don't tend to use my Win XP applications very much, so I try to only use freeware there. (But I had to buy SnagIt -- an excellent tool for capturing anything on your screen, including videos.) Otherwise, I have this bunch of freeware applications installed (and occasionally used):
1. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
2. AVG Anit-SpyWare Free Edition
3. Mozilla Firefox
4. Mozilla Thunderbird
5. Apple Quicktime
6. Apple iTunes
7. Apple Bonjour for Windows
8. Free Launchbar
9. Irfan View
10. VLC Media Player
11. doPDF
12. Anti-AdWare 2007
13. FileZilla FTP client

What is the best free anti-virus download to use on my MacBook Pro?
I'm worried that whatever Apple has built into the computer is not enough security. Is there a free anti-virus download for Macs? Do they do the job or do I have to spend money on something better? The download would need to identify and fix the problems. I mostly email, search the internet, sometimes buy things, download Kindle books, do my banking, etc. I would really not want to spend any money if it's not needed. Thanks.

In General 3rd Party AV Software and Cleaning Utilities tend to cause More Issues than they claim to fix...
They Not Required...
Mac OS X tends to look after itself.

Hello.
Recently a new free anti-virus came out at App Store.
I had already VirusBarrier free... no problem until now.
I was wondering if this new Virus Bitdefender is really better.
Is there any problem if I install both of them?
ThanksThere seems to be a bias in favor of ClamXAV among the communities users, have you tried that AV software?
Installing more than one is usually not a good idea as they will see the virus signature definitions in each other and think there is a problem. -

Installing anti virus for Windows?
I am running Windows XP Pro through Boot Camp and VMFusion Ware. I'm going to use an anti virus and was planning on the free ClamXav.
My question is, does an anti virus in this scenario need to be installed and run in the Windows environment, or does it get installed and run through OSXAs I understand it, ClamXav is for Macs only, and you need an anti virus program that operates in Windows. I can recommend Avast, which is also free (there is a Pro version as well) but there are many other programs available. Whatever anti virus application you select must be installed and run in Windows, not the Mac.

Free Anti Virus for a mac?
I know Mac is less susceptible to viruses than a PC, thats why I got one. But I think to be safe, I should protect it in some way, especially since new Macs use the same CPU's as PCs. I was wondering, what is the best free Antivirus (etc) package around for a Mac? Ive been looking, but everything seems to only say things about supporting Windows. I have gotten recommendations from other people, including the Apple Store, and checked on those and they only say that they support Windows. Is there a reason why Macs arent listed? Or are they just not supported?
This is in the Apple download area, I do not use it but its there if you want to try in out.

Ala.New Microsoft Security Essentials Beta now Available
http://www.windows7news.com/2010/07/20/microsoft-security-essentials-beta/
Following version 1.0 of the free Security Essentials released in September, the folks in Redmond outfitted the 2.0 beta with an updated antimalware engine. The new engine is smarter at detecting and removing security threats and offers a better performance, according to a Microsoft blog. The software also now integrates directly with Windows Firewall and gives users the option to turn the firewall on or off.
By integrating with Internet Explorer, the Security Essentials beta provides greater protection against Web-based threats, Microsoft said. It can also watch for attacks that come via a network, though this option is only available in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Users of Windows XP can't take advantage of this particular feature because XP lacks the necessary Windows Filtering Platform.
You can find it here.

Anti Virus for Windows 8.1
Hello,
My laptop 15j109tx came with Windows 8.1 and Mcafee LiveSafe - Internet Security.
After trial run, I opted for 1-year contract for Mcafee LiveSafe - Internet Security.
Later, I came to know that 8.1 comes with Windows Defender. So, this time I am
planning to try Windows Defender. Can you pls let me know the steps to deactivate
Mcafee and activate Windows Defender, keeping in mind that later on I might again want
to sign up for Mcafee and so might have to enable it and disable Windows Defender.
Also, after de-activating Mcafee and activating Windows Defender, how to enure/check
that these desired changes have taken into effect in the PC. Any precautions to be taken
with Windows Defender?
Thanks,
AnantHi @AKJain ,
Thank you for your query.
I grasp that your notebook came with Mcafre LiveSafe Internet Security. After the trial perion you opted for a 1 year contract.
You have since learned that Windows 8.1 came with Defender and would like to run it for a time and then decide if you want to use Mcafree LIveSafe.
Here is a link form Windows.microsoft.com to assist with Defender.
Using Windows Defender
Here is a link to McAfee LiveSafe Support where you can follow the prompts to acquire assistance from them.
You can also try this link but I do not know if or how well it works.
How to Disable McAfee from wikiHow.
As you stated you purchased this, you should have an activation key.
You can uninstall the program but retain the activation key and if you choose to reinstall the program you will have the key to continue your subscription.
Good Luck!
