Best Free Word Processing

Hi all
I need a program to make some brochures / newsletters. I need to have the flexibility to add pics, graphs, etc and be able to add color, edit, etc. I hate Word for this, too clumsy.
Any good programs out there for this? I love the iWeb interface, that would be ideal.... can it be used for this purpose? Is Pages worth the $$? will it be iWeblike??
Thanks.
J

Pages would work very nicely. I use it myself to create full-color brochures for my wife's business, and we get the resulting brochures professionally printed through online print companies. The results are very nice. Much better than the clunky, pixellated graphics we got on our first attempt with MS Word! Of course, Pages does not fit your subject-line criterion: "free." But it's worth the money, IMHO.
As to whether it is "iWeb-like"... yes and no. Yes, it offers a lot of easy templates and the like and has the same general feel as iWeb in many ways, but no, it's not as limiting and much more flexible than iWeb. As long as your needs aren't such that you need a high-end publishing app, Pages will do what you need.

"Best" is quite subjective. As William points out, TextEdit may be the "best" in someones eyes as it isn't cludged up with crap you don't need.
    What are your requirements?
    Basic text editing?
    Do you need:
    Table of Contents
    Index
    Footnote/endnote management
    Different headers/footers
    Page Layout
What are you going to use it for?
    Technical Reports
    Screenplay
    Leaflets and newsletters

  • Best free Word Processor that's compatible with Microsoft Word?

hey guys, i'm looking at moving over to the Mac in a couple days and i just need to know the best free Word Processor that can open .doc files. 99% of my docs made in Word are of the 97-2003 variety and not 2007's .docx.
    appreciate any  help.
    thanks

Well, in terms of best, it might be argued the best would be MS Word for Mac (MS Office for Mac 2011) as it uses the same native format as the window's version of office.
Others that are compatible include Apple's own Pages - http://www.apple.com/apps/pages/
Then there are the free offerings, like openoffice - http://www.openoffice.org/ and others.
I do not honestly know if there is one single "best" as there are so many possible specific features and formating oddities in MS Word that it is impossible to say that any one otherwise generally MS-Word-compatible program is guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your specific documents.

  • Word processing question

Are there any FREE word processing programs that are already on mac or that I can download?? Everything seems to be a demo, and you have to pay! I am a new mac user and a freshman college student, and I am going to be needing some equivalent of MS Word. Will MS Word be free in Leopard?

The TextEdit that comes already on the Mac is a very good word processor. I didn't know until I did a little exploring that it does everything you need for basic word processing. You can change fonts, type size, margins, tabs. Very basic, but it's good enough for me. I don't need to spend the money or look elsewhere for something else. (And I believe it is compatible with Word.)

It's your content, under your control.
If you output as an .ibooks file, and you want to sell it, the store is the only outlet, otherwise, you can do as you wish.

What is the best word processing program for Mac?

That's an impossible question to answer - what type of writing will you be doing?
Before we can point you in a direction you need to tell us what kind of writing you will be doing. As phrased, the question is a bit like "what's the best car?" Well few would doubt that a Ferrari is superior to a Honda minivan, but the Ferrari will not much use if you're dragging 4 kids, two dogs and the grandparents along.
    Academic?
Word is the nearest thing to a standard format in the Humanties, but in the sciences and math you'll find Tex more useful for laying out formulas. The older Pages is quite good as a substitute for Word in many cases in the Humanties, but you'll have big problems with citations in the newer version. Apps like Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel are more powerful than Pages, but each have shortcomings. Scrivener and Ulysses are excellent drafting tools but you'll need a Word Processor for final layout. There are lots and lots of lightweight editors out there - Byword, iaWriter (and Writer Pro), OmmWriter - that have little functional use in Academic settings - poor or no support for citations for instance, or poor or no interoperability with Word - but which might be excellent for other uses.
So, back to the key question: what kind of writing will you be doing?

  • What is the best word processing program for ipad2?

What is the best word processing program for ipad2?

I would recommend using Pages for what you are doing. It is the best one to use on the iPad itself, and has the ability to convert to an MS Word format. I know that it can do this through email, but I am also fairly certain you can import it in this format through iTunes, though you may need to convert it on the iPad itself.
With iOS 5 and iCloud, I recommend kicking Word to the curb altogether and going with Pages on both machines. Not only will everything be more seamless, but iCloud will update the changes you make, on either device, automatically. And Pages is only 20 bucks through the App store for the Mac (OS 10.6.7 or later needed).

    Best.

  • What is best word processing for the iMac?

What is best word processing to use on my imac?

Depends. What word processing are you doing?
Word is probably the most capable, but do you need all that capability? Pages is very good, but not as powerful, as are Nisus Writer and Mellel. But it comes down to the kind of power you need: You writing blog posts? Novels? Doctoral Theses? Letters to your Mummy? Each of these can be done in Word, but if you're only writing notes home then Word is overkill. If you need academic standards - citations, footnotes etc - then Word, Pages, Nisus etc. If you're writing a Novel or long project something like Scrivener or Ulysses 3 are likely better.
So... the best is the one appropriate for the writing you're doing - which is that?

  • What is the best free download for a word program?

i am looking for a word program to download for free

NeoOffice or its close cousin OpenOffice. Of the two NeoOffice is the fastest and has the best integration with OS X, but they use the same open source kernel. Either is a full office suite capable of reading or writing Microsoft Office files as well as their own open document format files. The suite includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and drawing capability. NeoOffice is now donation ware and available through the App Store for $9.99.

  • Best Free Download Word Processor

Hi. I didn't know where else to put it, so this is where I decided. All I want is a notepad sort of application. All I want is to be able to type out text, and save it. Can I download that for free? Thanks.
    Colin Thomson

There is a basic text editor already on your MBP. Applications > TextEdit.
(For advanced word processing, you can download NeoOffice for free.)
    Hope this helps...
