Best FTP for iWeb produced websites after Mobile Me?

best FTP for iWeb produced websites after Mobile Me?

If you're asking about an FTP client there are several very good FTP clients.  YummyFTP and Transmit are two commercial clients that provide two finder like windows of your local website folder and the online site folder.  That makes it very easy to drag and drop or do automatic syncs.
Cyberduck is a free FTP client and provides a Finder like window to the online folder.  You can open the local Finder window for the web site for dropping and dragging. It will also do an automatic sync.
As for hosting sites IMO the two best are HostExcellence.com and ixwebhosting.  They are owned by the same company and operate essentially the same.  The only difference is that HostExcellence has a free customer support phone line for customers outside the US. Both offer excellent ear to ear customer support.

  • What is the best replacement for iWeb?

I have been using iWeb for a very long time. I need to move on to something that is being updated. What is the best replacement for iWeb? I see Wordpress needs special software to work on a Mac.
    Thanks!
    Pat

I have used HostExcellence in the past and they support all the CMS's including WordPress, so you should have no problems there.
The top CMS's that most have heard about and use are Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.
There is probably no best one, but you need to look at them all and use the one that best fits your needs.
I have used all of them in the past, but most recently Joomla and Drupal.  Drupal has a reputation for being quite hard and Drupal 6 was, but with the advent of Drupal 7, things got a lot easier.  There are a lot more themes that you can use and if you want increased functionality in Drupal, then you can download Modules and install them.  You can have a membership site if you want it and this is easy to do - people can sign up for an account and you can restrict their access to certain parts of the site and then limit what they can do.  You can allow people to complete forms on the site itself and the results to be sent to you.  There is a Blog module that you can enable and that comes in Drupal Core with no need to download an extra module.
Joomla is good also and you can have a Blog with it too and there are lots of themes to choose from, but sometimes you have to pay for extras with Joomla - you can download Extensions and Plugins, but they may not always be free.
WordPress was always just thought of as a blogging platform, but it has evolved in to much more than that and you can now create stunning looking websites with blogs - there are a good range of free templates to choose from and if you want your blog on the front page of your site you can have this, or you can change it to another part of your site if you want a static front page.  To extend functionality you can download plugins from inside WordPress itself, most of which are free.  This might be the easiest one for you to use if you just want a website with a built in blog that is relatively easy.
Check out the others though at Drupal.org, Joomla.org and then WordPress.org.

  • Best practice for customizing EJB property after deployment

    Hi Gurus,
What is the best practice for customizing EJB property after deployment in NW7.1? I have a stateless session bean and it needs to get some environment information before acting. While the information can only be known at runtime. What should I do to achieve it? I thought I can bind the property with a JNDI context but I did not find out where to declare and change the context value. Please advise. Thanks.

    Hi.
I have a similar problem. But I still can not edit the properties of the ejb-jar.xml.
I tried to stop the web service, but the properties still remain unmodifiable.
Could you advise me how to change them?

  • Seeking simplest replacement for iWeb family website

OK, with MobileMe about to bite the dust I am seeking the simplest, free (or lowest cost) replacement for iWeb that offers the following:
    1. Ability to create web pages for major family events (wedding, births, etc.).
    2. Ability to use our purchased domain name to name the site.
    3. Ability to link to our genealogy site and other web info.
    4. Tight integration with iPhones - to import new photos and pages.
Basically, our website is an online scrapbook. I don't really want a blog to tell the world about all our recent activities; I just want a place that mainly offers photo albums and maybe some written content. I'm not interested in Facebook because I want to be able to have the site separate from Facebook.
    Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I can't see why anybody would want to pay this (or any) amount for a simple transfer. In any case, nearly all the files in a MobileMe account should be first downloaded to your Mac since most of us used it for more than just website hosting.
Unless you have a very basic site, you will have folders of assets outside of the main website folder. These need to be uploaded to the root folder on the new server and the URLs to them need to be changed in iWeb. Anybody who doesn't take the time to learn basic FTP and the server file structure is going to have even more problems with this part of the operation!
The actual files produced by iWeb don't need to be moved anyway since its just a question of publishing to the new hosting account using one of the methods shown here...

The first two companies mentioned on this page will move the files for free for new customers...

  • The best tool for determining which website to visit - and not getting a virus.

    www.mywot.com/
This browser add on is community serviced - and free. What it does is it has a database of user reviews of websites - to determine if people have had problems with the website (adware, virus's, false information, etc). If it is a RED rated site, you'll get a huge popup telling you so, and why. It also places rings next to website links with a green, yellow or red coloring - letting you know if it's safe to click.
This protects a lot of people who are uncertain, stumbling around on the internet. Ok, it also protects people who are more advanced that just plain arn't paying attention, LOL
Best Buy obviously does not endorse this tool, etc - this is just my personal opinion. But use it
I am a Bestbuy employee who volunteers on these boards on my own time. I am not paid for posting here, and you should understand that my opinions are exactly that - opinions. I do not represent Bestbuy in any way.

Great suggestion Red. I think you made it clear it wasn't fool proof and I doubt any of the av tools is going to anything above and beyond the info you are going to get from this kind of free tool.

  • Is .Mac account the best hosting for iWeb sites ?

I couldn't put too many questions into my earlier posting.
My question: is .Mac account the best option to host websites created with iWeb ?
if it doesn't matter, what would a recommended webhost ?
    thanks!

If you don’t publish your site to .Mac, these iWeb features are unavailable:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ Enhanced slideshows

  • Blocking specific IP address' for iWeb made website

    Hi,
I want to block IP address' that I don't want to access my website for security reasons. How do I do this? Is there any script I could use in the HTML snippet?

Use .htaccess IP restriction by creating an .htaccess file with the following code:
    ErrorDocument 403 http://www.example.com/403.html
    Order Deny,Allow
    Deny from 127.0.0.1
    Deny from 127.0.0.2
    Deny from 127.0.0.3
    Allow from all
Enter the IP addresses you'd like restricted and place the saved .htaccess file in the directory on your server that you'd like restricted based on those IP addresses. Add additional lines for Deny from if you want multiple IP addresses restricted.
Creating an .htaccess file may be a little tricky for inexperienced users. On OSX you can use Terminal to enable Finder to display hidden files and then rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess locally before upload. Alternatively you can upload htaccess.txt to your server and rename it to .htaccess on your host after it's uploaded.

  • Best practice for redesigning a website with CSS

I have a site I created in early 2000's in Dreamweaver back in the Macromedia days www.kid-ebooks.com. It is basic HTML using a lot of tables, some flash, etc. I have since created many other sites using CSS and Dreamweaver (Currently on CS5.5) and I now want to do a complete redesign of Kid-ebooks, using CSS. I also however want to keep a lot of existing content, links, etc. I don't know what is the best approach, whether it be to try and apply a CSS to the site, design in parallel and then switch when ready, copy and paste content? What is be recommendation for starting over, but keeping some content?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I've used this formula with success.  Make a back-up site beforehand.
Use Find & Replace > Source code > Tags >  to strip out all of the <table> <td> <tr> <font> <background> and any other deprecated code from the site.  Ultimately, you will be left with unstyled content, hyperlinks, & images.  Validate code and fix any errors.

CMSs come small & large.  The right one for your project depends on several factors:
    a) your coding skills
    b) what type of server-side programming and databases you can use
    c) projected size of site

  • Best practice for organising a website build in Muse

Wondering how others manage assets and files used in a Muse build.
I know this can get out of hand if assets are coming in from all over the computer.
I assume that Muse "references" an assets location (anywhere) and that at the end ...they are all "published to a single location.
I am considering a  single Project Folder that contains the .muse file and containing sub folders for the assets.  Is that good practice?
Then...for subsequent versions ( updates etc)  a new renamed Project folder.
Kind of similarly organised  to how I work in Premiere ...except the assets are spread around over various drives (because they are more demanding on the system).

That is exactly how I organize my Muse sites. Only I take it one step  further and hold the sites in my Creative Cloud Storage so that no matter what computer I need to edit the site from I always have the latest muse and assets files.

  • Best practice for cleaning up conversations after a recieve timeout

We have a pattern where sql server sends a message through service broker and waits for a response (say 10 ten secs), if it doesn't get a response, it will assume a default response and carry on. The response may come later and also end the conversation
target side. However there is no-one to receive the response (which is no longer needed). We have clean up script on a sql agent job but we were wondering if there is a cleaner way to handle these situations

Can't you set up an activation procedure that receives the response message and ends the conversation? I would not expect the activation procedure to be fired, if there is already is someone waiting on the queue.
But it is certainly nothing I have tested.

  • Best compression for iWeb movies

I am building a web site with many short movies I edited in iMovie and Final Cut Express. The movies are about 30-90 seconds each. I would like to use the most trouble free compression method available. By trouble free, I mean for the web site visitor. I do not want visitors to have problems with downloading my movies. I want Windows and Mac users to be able to have an equally easy time. I think I have narrowed it down to using either the H264 CODEC and ask visitors to download QuickTime 7 before downloading my movies or I am also considering Sorenson or MPEG-4. I would like to get a few different opinions on this from people who have working web sites with short movies. Please include a link to your web site so I can check out the performance of your site.
    Thanks,
    Frank

    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/03war/
    My pages as an example.
Sometimes it's better to use some "tricks" to give your pages and movies a bigger "wow" factor.
I would suggest MPEG-4 settings instead of H.264. As much as it is a great codec and makes nice looking files it forces the viewing machine to have QuickTime 7 installed. Older OS's (lower than 10.3.9 or Windows 98) can't even install it.
Small file sizes help reduce bandwidth use and speed up the downloads.
Playing files using the QuickTime Player or at dimensions like double size helps give a wow your visitors remember.

  • Best options for life (gulp) after iWeb...

    Hey Gang,
Been using iWeb since its inception. I've learned to love it.
Well- with the begining of iCloud and the transition away from MobileMe I see the writing on the wall. I realize alot of people will continue to use iWeb but I want to be proactive as I have several business websites created on my iMac.
About 2 years ago I had a strange backup issue and lost everything. I nearly switched off of iWeb at that time but I just loved it too much.
I want to start making the switch sooner than later as I know that Apple will eventually not support iWeb. It's only a matter of time before there is some quirk with a new OS version and it probably just won't open or whatever it may be...
So- yesterday I spent 12 hours and tried out each of these sites: Wix, Snappages, Webs, Intuit Websites, Weebly, Yola, Google Sites, Jimdo, Roxer, Neosites, Vistaprint, Moonfruit, and Squarespace.
They all left ALOT to be desired except Squarespace. I think it has potential.
As an alternative, I also downloaded Adobe Muse and did not like it at all. I used Rapidweaver in the past and didn't think much of it. I see their new version is packed with tons of extra costs- no thanks!
I'm left with Sandvox which I am going to try today.
Here's my question: What do you folks suggest? Moving away from actual software (Sandvox)? Transitioning to web-based (Squarespace) ? I really like the drag/drop functionality of iWeb but realize I might have to make some concessions!
A concern is working on multiple sites that reside on my comouter and constantly having to backup. I might be creating 2-3 more sites for friends so that would mean I have close to 10. Do I really want to do that and essentially become a webmaster? No so sure.
    I welcome all suggestions!
PS- I'm not a newbie but I also have not created and uploaded via an ftp/host. I do however have domains etc...
I'd like to do what is easiest and makes the most sense in the long run..
    D

A few months ago I had a look around at what was available in the way of software and you can download a PDF from this page under "Alternative Website Design Software"...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Why-iWeb.html
The main alternatives to iWeb, such as Sandvox and RapidWeaver, were not an option for me since they suffer from the same restrictions and cost a lot more. The other available drag and drop style software is either flawed or like, Freeway, antiquated and badly designed.
The online site builders do seem to offer a good alternative but they can be just as restrictive, cost a lot more and still produce huge ammounts of code. Some claim to be free but you need to look at the real cost - especially if you have more than one site. They do offer portable versions of the site suitable for iPhone etc and this has become a necessity - at least for a business site.
I chose to move on to a code entry style software and this has proved to be fairly easy since the one I use is WYSIWYG and I can see the changes in real time in the preview window. Its also cheaper than RapidWeaver and Sandvox and doesn't require add ons to optimize and upload the files.
HTML5 will allow us to build better, more efficient websites but its not quite there yet. If I hadn't made the move to code entry software I think I would have been tempted to stick with iWeb for the time being and use one of the online site builders to create a separate portable version for cell phones as a stop gap.
There has got to be a better way to create websites using drag and drop and I believe something will come along that will make apps like iWeb, Sandvox and RapidWeaver redundant. After all, why did Apple quit on iWeb?
iWeb does offer two alternatives for publishing...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Publish-Website.html
... and there's any amount of hosting out there...

The  MobileMe only features can be replaced with alternatives if you need them...

There may be a few links in Apple Support, regarding articles about how to use iBooks Author
and iBooks Store, etc; these would be separated into two general categories by device used.
Since there is an iOS and an OS X version of each, you may have to look to see what Apple
Support says about the one you are interested in; and how far their database goes toward an
answer to your question. Otherwise, a general search engine approach may be necessary.
Not sure if anything along the lines of what you seek would be available in an App.
References to iBooks Author and iBooks Store, etc appear within these two categories in Support:

Appears a community host moved your earlier post into one of the iBooks Author or Store sections
after I'd replied to what otherwise may be a similar post. Not sure if the links to the Discussions area
of iBooks you are interested in, have similar questions or answers by others who'd visited previously.

In my reply to your earlier thread, prior to it being moved, those links to sections of iBooks Author, etc
are posted. You can also find them from the main Apple Support Communities page.
Sorry to not be of much help in this matter.
