Best hard drive for raid.

Hey,
I know this question may be posted quite frequently, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
I plan on getting one 500gb hd from mac when I buy my pro ( I will use this drive as my boot drive). Then buy three aditional 500gb hard dirves from other world computing. These three hard dirves will all be striped in a RAID 0. Until this point I planned on purchasing three maxtor maxline 500's. But I am not completely sure this will be best for my set up.
* I plan on using this computer for digital media content, ie. Shake, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and Color. I also want to eventually be importing and editing HD footage.
So, whats the best hard drive I can buy three of to stripe together in a RAID 0 in my Mac Pro?
Thank you in advance for your help.

You'll get get different people giving you different responses based in their personal preferences. Ultimately though, there are realistically only 3 main contenders when it comes to the 500GB drive which are…
- Maxtor MaXLine
- Seagate Barracuda ES
- Western Digital RE2
The Maxtor is an extremely proficient all-round drive but does tend to run a little hot. Uncomfortably hot for some though I've found that my MaXLine IIIs, which run at similar temperatures to be just fine. One big downside to this drive is that Maxtor/Seagate no longer manufacture this drive. These drives are the small file access kings in my opinion which makes them fantastic boot/small file scratch drives like for Photoshop.
The Seagate drives really suck at small file, fast access performance so that make really poor boot/general use drives. However, they excel at large file sustained transfers which should help with your video editing.
Finally The Western Digital drives are the queitest and coolest of the bunch. Again they're a good all-round performer and are the favourite of many. Having the least experience with these I can't say too much of their performance.

  • Best hard drive for use with Time Machine

    Hi,
Has anyone determined what the best external hard drive is for use with Time Machine? Is there a particular one that works exceptionally well with Time Machine, or is it much of a muchness?
I'm looking for a Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 drive that STAYS ON all the time, and doesn't automatically spin down or spin up like the rubbish WD My Book drives do.

I can't tell you if it is the "best" hard drive for you to use with TM, but I'm quite happy with the 500 GB Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo TurboUSB I bought recently. It is quiet, quite inexpensive for the capacity (I paid about $120 for one on sale at Fry's), & completely compatible with OS X & TM.
Best of all for me, it automatically powers down when my iMac sleeps. It also spins down after a time if the Mac's Energy Saver preference "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked; otherwise it remains spun up until the Mac is put to sleep or switched off.
It comes with "Turbo" USB & Memeo "AutoBackup" software, neither of which I installed. (The box didn't claim these extras came in a Mac version but both Mac & Windows versions were included on the CD.) Out-of-the-box, I reformatted the drive with the Apple Partition Map scheme & two partitions, a 160 GB one for cloning my internal drive & the rest for TM. The drive works perfectly for both uses & seems quite fast, as one would expect from a 7200 rpm SATA drive.

  • What's the best Hard Drive for TM? USB or FIrewire?

What's the best Hard Drive for TM? USB 2.0 or FIrewire 400 or 800?
Any recommendations would be great. Need about 1TB.

The most recent is 1TB, and cost about the same as the previous one which was 500GB. The first d2 was only a little cheaper and was 60GB!
Same experience here! They keep the price about the same but you get double the storage, so the price of storage has been going down big time! But now I find myself ******* after Drobo Hey, that editor whacked me for "l u s t i n g" that isn't foul language is it?

  • What is the Best Hard Drive for a Powerbook Pismo 200 and best size for sto

I have a Power book G3 Pismo 2000 which came with a 10 GB Hard Drive. It is almost full and I want to upgrade the Hard drive to a bigger and I do not know the best hard drive and what is the maximum space I will need? Can you recommend size and Manufacture?

I bought a 80GB Toshiba for my Pismo. It seems to work well. I believe the largest drive that will be fully recognized is a 120GB drive.
Here's a good place to see your options. Go to this web page at OWC and get a listing of your upgrade options for your Mac model.

You can get the product models and specs, and shop around, but OWC has pretty good prices.

  • Formatting a Hard Drive for RAID 5

    Hey everyone,
I'm a bit new to RAID formatting. I understand how it works, but I want to make sure I'm formatting correctly.
We are looking to format a 12TB drive for RAID 5 for optimal space, speed and safety.
In Disk Utility, I am selecting 5 partitions, but  how to I format EACH partition? Should they all be Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
The manual that came with my drive (OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2) wasn't much of a help. Maybe you are!
    Thanks in advance

By the way, we are attempting to format RAID 5 to 4 disks.

Most storage experts agree on the Hitachi 2.5"
Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:
Hitachi manufacturers the safest and most reliable hard drives, according to the Storelab study. Of the hundreds of Hitachi hard drives received, not a single one had failed due to manufacturing or design errors. Adding the highest average lifespans and the best relationship between failures and market share, Hitachi can be regarded as the winner.
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many hundreds of millions of hours of work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can be avoided by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless thousands of people each year have come to regret.
Countless people think they're safe and doing well having a single external backup of their vital data they worked months, years, and sometimes decades on. Nothing could be further from the truth. Never let yourself be in situation of having a single external copy of your precious data at any time.

  • Best Hard Drive for PS, RPM or MB CACHE more important?

  • Best hard drive for time machine

    Hi,
I use a MBP 2011 i7 and connect it to a 24" Cinema display at my home office and remove each day to take to a client office.
I have a Lacie Porshce 1tb external drive connected to the back of the Cinema display via one of the USB ports. This is the Time Machine drive. Unfortunately, there are no firewire ports in the back of the display.
I dont plan to buy a new Thunderbolt display at this stage.
Often pressed for time in the morning, on the way to my client site, my MBP is in sleep mode and I dont always have time to wake it and then eject the Time Machine. This means the 'failed to eject / you bad person' message or effect takes place.
When I reconnect the MBP to the Cinema display in the evening, I need to turn off and turn on the external Lacie drive to get it to reconnect to my MBP through the Cinema display. I would really like it to sort itself out as its quite a pain.
A friend has suggested that some brands of drive may be better at recovering from this situation by itself.
Does anyone out there have experiences they can share on this subject?
    Regards
    Eric

Any drive that is NOT properly shut down can eventually corrupt (no guaranteed failure, but ...).
Constant-speed drives are best, not drives that self-sleep, as a sent datapacket may be kicked back and confuse the application and the OS.
Take the time to wake the system and properly dismount, my humble opinion.
Also, I run two external drives.  One TimeMachine, one CarbonCopyClone.  CCC backups are bootable, offering a bootable alternate system in case of disaster.

  • Hard drives for use with Logic

Anyone have any opinions on the best hard drives for both the project files, as well as extra external drives for keeping samples on? I'm pretty sure that at this point, my hard drives are creating more system locks than my processing speed.
According to the "activity monitor" my processing and RAM are definitely not working to capacity.
Is there a threshold where drive capacity gets too big and starts to affect performance, or does it really not matter?
    Thanks,
    -jeff

I've used a lot of lacies but I don't recommend them anymore and won't buy one the next time I get a drive. too many things have gone wrong with them over time, I have a hard time trusting them. I currently use a lacie 500GB d2 drive (the long one with triple interface) for my sound library and project files using FW800. so far so good, but it will be relegated to backup drive as soon as I get a g-tech drive.
I'm probably going to go for a G-RAID 500GB. I'm even considering getting an e-SATA one to use with my MBP using an e-SATA card.. I like the idea of having desktop-class data throughput. and also I've been eyeing off the liquid mix for my MBP, so having the firewire bus totally free for that would be not a bad idea at all..
I've head nothing but good reports about g-tech drives, the only bad thing is that there never seems to be any stock available, you always have to back order. maybe this is a good sign?
I'd second the opinion already posted that as far as firewire goes, g-tech are the best choice for serious work.

  • Best hard drive setup for Logic Pro?..

    Hi all,
I'm about to get a Mac Pro, and I was wondering a bit about the best hard drive set up for running Logic Pro.
    1. Should I go with Western Digital Caviar SE ? Noise is a primary issue, I'd like them to be as silent as possible. Could anybody tell me their experiences with this disc?.. I also hear that Samsungs Spinpoint are almost silent. Any truth to this? (I want my discs in sizes of 500Gb.)
    2. Is this a good setup:
    D1: Mac OS, Logic Pro
    D2: Audio for Logic Pro
D3: Sample libraries, including direct from disc streaming.
    3. I seem to remember from another post that someone wrote that raiding discs could actually decrease performance when working with audio. Is this the case?
    Thanks,
    Curvebender.

Yes, excellent way to go. One suggestion: on your sample or audio drive, or an external FW, install a basic system + Logic app only. This enables you to have another system to boot from in case of trouble, or you can use it as a test bed for future updates etc. without affecting your primary system. You'd only boot into this drive in case of problems or for testing. I currently have Leopard running on one drive to test it out as I don't want to move to 10.5.x yet.

  • Best external hard drive for Macbook pro and Aperture

Hi, any recomendations for an external hard drive for the macbook pro and aperture. I was looking for approx 300Gb !
    Many thanks
    macphi

Personally I have had poor luck with LaCie Big Disk peformance and support and don't recommend LaCie. However I do recognize that my sample of one is statistically insignificant.
The eSATA concept is interesting, but bleeding tech edge at the moment. For a solid solution that works now I recommend FW800 (forget USB) and RAID 0 technology. I have had great success with OWC and just bought their least expensive (in $ per GB) 640 GB FW800 US$370 RAID O drive setup: <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/ME8R7640GB16/>.
Just this week OWC introduced RAID 0 +1 drives that have RAID 0 speeds but also provide mirror backups. Perhaps the very best solution but pricey.
EDIT: If you bought a 15" MBP instead of the 17" you forever lack FW 800. Go for a FW 800 or an eSATA Express Card solution when available. You could buy an OWC drive now and jusr run it FW 400 until you get an Express Card FW800 port. The OWC drive came with ports and cables for both FW 800 and FW 400.
