Best HD Cam

Hello.
I am currently using a Canon GL1 to film events. I am looking to upgrade to an HD video cam. Can anyone offer any guidance on a reasonably priced, professional quality HD cam that is compatible with Mac?

Any HDV camera that is tape based will work fine.
If you decide to a tapeless format then Standard AVCHD will work with FCE directly. Avoid AVCHD Lite for FCE use.
Exactly which model is a personal thing based on size, mobility, features etc. to your specific needs.
If you get a short list, post back the model/s and then FCE users can offer their thoughts.
For example I use a Panasonic 3MOS AVCHD camera and it is just fine, outstanding picture quality and it has external mic and earphone so you can gather decent audio during a shoot.
The new age image stabilizers are also a big asset if you do work that has to be hand held.

What is the best wireless camera that will work with my mac?

Any reliable brand that claims Mac compatibility.
Different wireless cams (wi-fi versus BlueTooth) may work better for different purposes, so ask your retailer for one that best does what you want to do with it.  For some examples of all kinds and types, click the link at the end of this sentence to see results of this search for your posted question.

This camera is NOT on Apple's list of supported cameras to use with iMovie 11. Nor is the camera Canon SD3500 as mentioned by you, I thought ...
Do you think I could use the Coolpix S8100 camera as well with iMovie 11 ?
    Or could I meet a problem ?
In my opinion, the camera will work with iMovie '11, HOWEVER....
I have a Canon SX30IS bridge camera [that is, not a camcorder], and the HD videos work absolutely fine on iMovie with one - for me - important problem.
As my camera is also not supported, when any number of short video files are loaded in together, iMovie will not understand the sequence they were taken in, and MAY load them in a fairly random order into a project.
This is not a problem where one or two files are concerned, but where there are more, it can be a major problem if you want them used in sequence.
You either have to load them into the project one by one, manually, or be able to identify clearly from the thumbnails which is which, or the order will be all wrong. It IS possible to relate what you see as a thumbnail back to the original file, but only one file at a time, so you can't use the thumbnails to work out the order, if the images shown don't do that for you.
I have used videos from 5 unsupported digital cameras, and even an 8mm cine conversion file quite successfully, so I have no doubt that the Nikon will also work.

I did a lot of research on the issue, which you can read about here:
    http://www.kbeat.com/Site/Blog/Entries/2007/9/10New_camcorder%2C_HD_atlast!.html
After much consideration, I went with the Canon HV20, and I've been very happy with the results. I use it on a recent MacBook Pro, and have not had a single issue. You can read a great comparison article featuring the Panasonic Steve Jobs mentioned, the Canon, the JVC, and a Sony:
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/The-Great-HD-Shoot-Out---Canon-HV20-Sony-HD R-HC7-Panasonic-HDC-SD1-JVC-GZ-HD7.htm
Good luck. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the cameras they reviewed, but the Canon has the best image, which was my number one priority.

  • Best Digital Camera For Macbook

    Hi,
I want to know whats the best digital cameras that support the Macbook and is under $300?

There's little reason to worry about digital camera compatibility with the MacBook. If the camera uses compact flash or any of the other multitude of memory card media available today the additional purchase of a memory card reader makes any camera compatible even if it doesn't play nice when connecting the camera to the computer directly. (I hate doing this anyway because it uses up the battery)
Everyone has their own favorite camera manufacturer. Once upon a time I was a Kodak color film fan because their film had superior skin tones and color saturation. But then Fuji Film pushed ahead. Digital cameras don't use film obviously, but each camera has its own color rendering qualities. I particularly like Canon and Fuji cameras for their color accuracy. Kodak's are pretty good too but in low light situations tend to have more noise than others and greys tend to be washed out. (Yep, I'm a camera buff.)
If you intend to take action shots look for cameras with low shutter lag, which tends to be a big problem with digital cameras. A couple summers ago my wife took lots of pictures of where the whales were just a second ago.

  • What is the best film camera around?

hiya i want to make films has anyone got any opinions on what is the best film camera around? thanx xx

Generally you need a tape camera if you want to edit your video.
The Canon HV20 which has just been updated is now available for £545 (post free) from Amazon.
It is a high quality Hi-Def camera which has received excellent reviews :-

I do notice that someone on the forum is having problems capturing with an HV20 but this may be an isolated occurrance.

  • Best on camera mic solutions

Hi everyone, this is just a post to start a discussion on the best on camera mic solutions for the FS7. Myself I am looking into several options: Sennheiser ME64 K6 Combo: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/73098-REG/Sennheiser_ME64_K6_COMBO_ME64_K6_Cardioid_Mic.html Audio Technica AT875R: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/495302-REG/Audio_Technica_AT875R_AT875_Short_Condenser_Shotgun.html Audio Technica AT2022: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/761016-REG/Audio_Technica_AT2022_AT2022_X_Y_Stereo_Microphone.html Sony ECM 957Pro: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/542166-REG/Sony_ECM_957PRO_ECM_957PRO_Mid_Side_Stereo_Microphone.html Octava MK 012: http://www.oktava-online.com/mk012.htm Any opinions on the above or others mics? Thank you in advanced for contributing to this thread. And all the best for 2015!Nils

I love the Octava  and use it for interviews  as a "poor man's schoeps ", but its no good as an on camera mic. Too sensitive to noise, handling and wind and not directional enbough. The AT 875 as I understand it is derived from the traditional Sony mono  camera on Broadcast cameras for years and years. Thus its basically designed for that purpose and deals with handling and wind noise very well. Its just about as directional as you want , and is not bad sounding at all.  i use an old Sony camera mic, but my understanding is the 875 is the same thing. I'm sure there may be better mics out there but you won't go wrong with teh AT. I hate the senn 64 series - but what do I know I'm just a shooter.  hey - what the heck are those little  music labels under our names - Top 40, groovin, etc ?????

  • Best webcam / camera for iChat - definitive answer?

    So,
loving my iChat with iSight, I need to get a friend a camera to use with their Mac Pro (2007) / Leopard to communicate with us; and of course, not having the luxury of iSight to purchase anymore, is there a definitive 'best' camera to buy that works 'flawlessly' with iChat ?
I liked the Quickcam 9000 per spec, but it looks like people have a lot of problems with it (5 frames a second is not acceptable). Is there a better / more reliable option?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hello Dan
Because of system configurations and other possible webcam uses, what it "better / more reliable" for one may not be for you.
Your Leopard equipped Mac Pro can use any of the suggestions offered in this post:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5725045&#5725045
For lowest cost, best picture, and great zoom capability, (albeit with less convenience than a webcam.) I suggest you use your Mac compatible Firewire-equipped DV camcorder if you have one. The only possible problem I know with Firewire connected cameras is possible hardware or software conflicts for some of us.
A UVC cam will avoid that problems with your Firewire ports. However, understand that every USB device that shares one of your Mac Pro's USB channels also shares its bandwidth. Therefore, you will get best performance from a UVC webcam if you disconnect other devices from the channel that your UVC cam is using while you perform your video tasks.
I started with my DV Camcorder, but I have been using my old Rev A iSight since I got it about four years ago. Therefore, if you want actual users' experiences with USB webcams, we will need to await input from others.

  • Best digital camera and camcorder...

What are some good budget digital camcorders and a digital camera for the MacBook? My wife and I are expecting our first child in December and we're both in college (I have a degree in visual communications, and I'm going back for computer programming), and she's going for nursing.
We're kind of tight on money fixing up our house and getting things ready for the baby, and I've got 'proud parent disease' where I wanna take pictures and video tape EVERYTHING all the time.
    Any suggestions?

My suggestion is to not cheap out on a digital camera (no experience with camcorders). It may save you money up front but the quality of the product may come back to bite you (much like getting a Windows PC versus a Mac ).
I use this review site: http://www.steves-digicams.com/
I'm not an expert, but among my circle of very amateur photography friends Canon is considered to have the best quality lenses and image processors. I myself went with a Canon PowerShot A540, a 6-megapixel consumer model, and it's been great. The A-series filled all of my requirements--took AA-type batteries instead of expensive proprietary ones, had features that the super-compact line didn't, including good basic video recording (for quick clips), and it wasn't as bulky as an SLR or "prosumer" model. My brother and another friend got the A540's less expensive sister, the A530; the only reasons I didn't go with that was the smaller screen and the video recording wasn't as good.
I'd avoid Kodak and HP branded cameras, as well as any generic brands. Most everyone else should be decent too, including Sony, Fuji, Olympus, etc.

  • Best video camera to use with Apple TV?

I have Apple TV and love it so far. I want to buy a video camera, and need to know what is the best choice for a camcorder in the $200-$300 range, that will record quality video which can be easily downloaded into iTunes and played on Apple TV. I know there are issues with converting video from the "pocket" HD cameras such as the Flip and Kodak Zi8, so it can be played on Apple TV. I don't mind making such a conversion if it's easy and doesn't require a big expenditure on additional software/ accessories.
My set-up is: iTunes 9 on a Dell PC with Windows XP
Apple TV (connected via wireless network)
    Samsung 52" LCD HDTV

I want quality video that can be easily downloaded into iTunes and played on Apple TV. I don't mind standard definition if it will still look good on a large HDTV. Two concerns I have with the HD cameras (other than price of course) are file storage issues, and the problems with converting the HD video files so they can be played on Apple TV. I don't mind doing such conversions, just as long as it's not too cumbersome and doesn't require a big expenditure on additional software or accessories. I actually just bought the Kodak Zi8, but it seems incompatable with iTunes, and I'm not really all that impressed with the image quality for an HD camera.

  • Best digital camera for iMovie08 in the 'ultra-compact category'

    which one?
note: i was excited about getting the new Kodak Easyshare V1273 but seems like importing the videos into imovie is a hussle. i basicly would like to get the best high-definition resolution in the market today but in an 'ultra-compact' category i can carry with me. any recommendation?

you said it is easy operation, but is it fast?
video quality decreases a bit due to the conversion?
what camera like the ones i mentioned you recoment?
Yes, the conversion is fast since the video (QT MPEG-4) is passed "as is" from the MOV file container to the MP4 file container (i.e., there is no re-compression of the video so quality is exactly the same) while only the audio is converted if applicable. By that last comment I refer to the fact that neither Kodak nor most reviewers bother to say what audio codec is used but that historically, Kodak uses µ-Law 2:1 audio compression which cannot be edited in iMovie '08 and must be converted to AAC in order to be placed in the MP4 file container and that the AAC is compatible with iMovie '08.
As to recommendations for specific cameras, I rarely make any. To me, the choice is very personal -- almost intimate -- and includes everything from "the feel" of the camera in your hand to its looks. The technical specifications are merely one aspect for consideration. Features are another. Normally, I would make a list of specs and features, arrange this in priority order, make a list of models meeting my requirements, and only then go shopping to evaluate the look/feel of those models. I may spend up to six months shopping and frequently bring my own media to the store to capture sample files for evaluation at home. Except for my first film camera (a Kodak Retina III-C, 1954-1957 vintage), I still have every film and digital camera I ever bought and all are still in good working condition. My advice is the get one that has both the specs and the features you want/need and feels/looks right to you and treat it as if you plan to keep it for at least 30 years.
Also, is the conversion using Quicktime straighforward/well done/optimal (ie. the converted audio is great/excellent?), or since i haven't bought the Kodav V1273 do you recommend instead buying something that is fully compatible with imovie out of the box? (my main and final instest is being able to use imovie.
The Conversion is very straight forward. Simply
    a) Open the clip in either QT Pro or GarageBand
    b) Select the "Movie to MPEG-4" export option
    c) In the "options" window select the "MP4" File Format
    d) Under the "Video" tab select the "Pass Through' Video Format option
    e) Under the Audio tab select: AAC-LC (Music), Data Rate 64 Kbps for mono (128 Kbps for stereo), 44.1 KHz sampling rate, and Better or Best encoding.
Converted audio will be the same quality as the original -- just slightly larger in file size. The settings listed above are much higher than the original so nothing you can hear will be lost. The V1273 is listed as using the QT MPEG-4 video codec. This means it is compatible with iMovie HD as is and will be compatible with iMovie '08 once the audio is modified. About the only problem you might have is the selection of a Kodak model using the M-JPEG/µ-Law video/audio combination. This format cannot be "passed through" and would require separating the audio for conversion and replacement of the original audio if you want to preserve the original video (which is once again iMovie '08 compatible but not not MP4 file container compatible). In other words, any Kodak digital camera storing its video as QT MPEG-4/µ-Law can use the "pass through" work flow described above. If you find that any of the newest models use AAC (with valid data rate/sampling rate combination), then it will be compatible with iMovie '08 "out of the box." But since most manufacturers are strangely quiet regarding their audio compression formats, it is difficult to evaluate total compatibility based just on the specs given.

  • Best dslr camera for iPhoto

I'm looking to get a dslr camera and would like to know which is most compatible with iPhoto ? Does anyone have any suggestions?

There is no one that is "most" compatible. Standard advice: Stick to the Major brands. If you're thinking of shooting Raw make sure you're camera is supported. And for which ones are... We need to know your version of iphoto and the OS.
For instance: here's the current list...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757
For my money: best thing to do with  DSLR is to handle it. Pick it up, hold it, put it down a few times. The size of your hand and the grip of the camera are not always a match.

  • Best DSLR camera for traveling

I travel every year and was wondering what camera would be best for traveling year after year.

Ok.... there's a lot factors I have to think about it each time I go on a trip
budget... I like a D7000 or  D700 for a low-light full size sensor.  Does your budget allow for it?  What about the D3200?
weight.... some cameras have metal bodies that can impact your carry on maximum.  How many lenses do you want to carry?
size... does your restrictions allow for extra lenses?
airline restrictions vs buses vs car trip... travelling in your car is different than what you can carry on a plane.  On a public bus?  Do you want to make yourself an easy target for thieves
lighting conditions... some cameras are better for low light (Nikon FX bodies)
image quality.... zoom lenses may be practical, but a prime lens will have less distortion.  Nikon just announced the 18-300mm VR.... just waiting for image reviews before putting money on mine.
use of flash?.... some destinations (museams) do not allow for flash.  However, a flash means you don't need to carry multiple heavy fast lenses on the trip.
image stabilization... some lenses have image stabilization so you don't need to carry fast lenses as much
waterproof?... some camera bodies have weather seals and can better take a splash of water
tripod?  Consider a table top tripod.  If you want full size.... seriously consider carbon fibre.
consider a lowepro camera bag that comes with an all weather cover for protection.
    For myself...
Nikon D300 with weather seals or a D700 for situations that don't allow for light.  The grips are detachable to keep the camera small.
Nikon 18-200mm VR doesn't take as much space as multiple fast lenses.  Nikon will be releasing the 18-300mm next week.
Nikon SB-900/910 flash to help with challenging light conditions

  • Sony RX100/One of the best compact cameras to this point

    Hey Everyone,
I was recently reading an article on the best five compact cameras currently on the market, and one model really stood out for me. Being a Canon shooter I of course like the G15, but the model that really impressed me was the Sony RX100.
I loved the design, the fact that in "speed priority mode" it shoots up to 10 frames per second, but the best part of this camera is the one inch sensor. Most compact cameras have a 2/3 or 1/1.7 inch sensor size. This means the sensor size has at least double the capturing area of most other cameras in its class, and because of this it should be capable of much better photos. Call me impressed. What do you think?

Anything that you can preface with "the new" is not a good candidate for compatibility. If you want something that you're sure will work (without a hassle), then go for tried and true solutions-- XDCAM EX, DVCPRO HD, these are formats that work and work well.

  • N82 best 5MP camera phone ? hmmm..

    hi all,
i am not here to thrash it.. i love N82. I bought it because the reviews usually place it as the best cam phone...
however, i dont seem to be getting such results. Either my phone is spoil or i do not know how to use the camera settings.
    1) the colors can be different on the SAME location and TIME. example, i start the camera, it will look very plain / bluish . After panning around a bit or resetting the camera, it suddenly becomes more "colorful"
    2) Focus is out sometimes. example, i am trying to shoot A but instead B is sharper.
Please advise? i love this phone and i want to love the cam too...sigh

Dude, my advice is that you should learn more about taking artistic shots. The colour differences can occur even if you change the way you hold it by a single degree. Better adjust camera settings to suit the situation when taking the photo, select the maximum resolution for better photos, use optical zooming instead of digital zooming.. Refer to the N95 Camera review at allaboutsymbian.com . You'll be able to find some great tips there. I don't think there'll be much differences between the two devices. After all, although the N82 plays music, edits documents, records video and takes pictures, it is still a phone. So don't expect it to do the same job like your digital camera. But as far as I know, N82 is the BEST 5MP phone in the market right now.
